Popup link in Quick launch
I recently migrated our SP 2010 to SP 2013, Everything migrated well. But in SP 2010 i used to update the quick launch links by going to http://spsite/_layouts/quiklnch.aspx with the Pop up link
JavaScript:var options=SP.UI.$create_DialogOptions();options.url='http://mylink.com';options.width = 1000;void(SP.UI.ModalDialog.showModalDialog(options))
But the same when i do in for SP 2013 i am getting url format is invalid
Can anyone please suggest me an alternative way where i can put the above SP Popup link in Quick launch.
My whole migration work is stuck because of this issue.
Thanks.

How to add a link under quick launch using custom actions?
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/bb802730(v=office.15).aspx
Custom actions allow us to create feature to add a link under site settings, site actions menu and even central admin.
Is there any way we can extend this feature to allow links being added under quick launch? I tried providing location Microsft.SharePoint.Navigation but that had no effecthi
you don't need to use custom actions in order to add links to the quick launch menu. It allows to add links programmatically to the menu items collections directly, see e.g.
Adding Links to Quick Launch. From this link check the following example which adds an item under the Lists heading in Quick Launch.:
using System;
using Microsoft.SharePoint;
using Microsoft.SharePoint.Navigation;
namespace ConsoleApp
class Program
static void Main(string[] args)
using (SPSite site = new SPSite("http://localhost"))
using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
// Get the Links list or create it if it does not exist.
SPList list = web.Lists.TryGetList("Links");
if (list == null || list.BaseTemplate != SPListTemplateType.Links)
// Create the list.
Guid listId = web.Lists.Add("Links", "Interesting hyperlinks", SPListTemplateType.Links);
list = web.Lists.GetList(listId, false);
// Check for an existing link to the list.
SPNavigationNode listNode = web.Navigation.GetNodeByUrl(list.DefaultViewUrl);
// No link, so create one.
if (listNode == null)
// Create the node.
listNode = new SPNavigationNode(list.Title, list.DefaultViewUrl);
// Add it to Quick Launch.
listNode = web.Navigation.AddToQuickLaunch(listNode, SPQuickLaunchHeading.Lists);
Console.Write("\nPress ENTER to continue....");
Console.ReadLine();

Quick launch links to documents, can only save the document once
Hi,
We have a problem in SharePoint 2007.
We have some links to documents in the quick launch menu. First, these were opened as read-only per default.
This was fixed by adding file:// instead of the http://
Now we can save the document/excel/... once, but when clicking save a second time, office gives a non-informative error: 'The document was not saved.' with a link 'Was this information helpful?'. So it doesn't save either. This is verified, because when
I close the document after this, it asks to 'save as' to another location.
This is tested with a bunch of accounts, also DC admin accounts, which have full control over sharepoint.
When opening the documents in the library, there is no problem. It's only the links in the quick launch that don't respond as required.
Hope someone has a workaround for this.
Kind regards,
InkendaalJust use again the http:// hyperlink and reconfigure the browser settings correct!
File links are not made for use with SharePoint even the file links are not 100% supported in a web browser... -
Need to add link to report library on quick launch
I hid the "Report Library" quick launch link on the left hand side of the Sharepoint portal home page, and then was informed that it needed to be displayed again .I selected "Yes" for "Display this document
library on the Quick Launch?" when setting the report library properties, but it doesn't show up in the Quick Launch bar. In fact, the Quick Launch bar only displays a link to "Libraries," which opens the All Documents page.
Is there some sort of setting in the Site Settings or in Central Administration that can resolve this problem ?
DavidIf the Publishing Feature is enabled go to Site Settings > Navigation (Maybe the link is set to hide or make a new heading).
If the Publishing Feature is not enabled go to Site Settings > Tree view (under Look and Feel) > Enable Quick Launch or enable Tree View. -
Sound quick launch button doesn't work when i installed windows 8 in my hp pavilion dv3z notebook
1. Product Name and Number
hp pavilion dv3z notebook pc
2. Operating System installed (if applicable)
windows 8
3. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
installed windows 8
when i installed windows 8 in my hp pavilion dv3z notebook pc, the quick launch button of volume is always red and the sound is mute....the driver for quick launch buttons and driver for sound is also up to date....can you please help me?
This question was solved.
View Solution.When installing the audio driver, was it installed by following the prompts or in compatibility mode as outlined here?
Based on the Software and Drivers page for this unit, the unit was not tested and certified for Windows 8. This means that some functionality may not be the same since the unit was not designed for Windows 8. See this site for information and to find out if it has been tested for Windows 8.
If the sound driver has not been installed in compatibility mode, then I recommend using the Windows 7 64bit driver found here and using the linked steps above to install it in compatibility mode.
Let me know what happens.

Show Quick Launch (Side Navigation) in Search Results page
Hi,
I created a custom search results page in a site (under Pages library). In this page the Quick Launck (side navigation) is hidden. Any solution to display it?
keren tsurYou can try this:
1. Edit page
2. Create a custom text file and insert the following CSS, which will make the Quick Launch menu visible:
<style type="text/css">
#s4-leftpanel {
display:inherit!important;
width:155px!important;
.s4-ca {
margin-left:155px!important;
</style>
Save the file, naming it showQuickLaunch.txt. Store the text file in the Style Library or on the server.
3. Insert a Content Editor Web Part on the page in which you want to hide the Quick Launch menu. Edit the Web Part, entering the link to the showQuickLaunch.txt file.

Javascript popup link not working
I've searched everywhere so trying to post here to see if anyone has encountered this. I have a javascript popup link in a PDF. Using Reader 9 and IE8. When I click the link it asks me if I want to allow or not. When I say allow, I then get an IE error that reads:
Internet Explorer cannot download file .
Unspecified Error
I've noticed that if I already have IE running, then the link works. But if I don't have an IE window open I get the error. The link looks like this:
javascript:void(window.open('http://servername/appname/apppage.aspx?id=2','_blank','width=700,height=500,tool bar=0,scrollbars=0,location=0,statusbar=0,menubar=0,resizable=0'))
This link has to be a javascript window.open based on how it is generated. The PDF is generated by SQL reporting services and the online version of the report needs to launch a new window for this application - the PDF is created directly from the online version of the report.Please repost in the Acrobat Scripting forum.

Restrict a user to see All site content link on quick lanuch
Hi
how to restrict a user (who has only view permissions ) to see All Site Content Link on quick lanuch
adilYou can find your answer in the following thread. You will have to rely on Audience targeting.
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/2b61ae45-77ca-4e80-88dd-98eed32d23b8/sharepoint-2010-hide-some-quick-launch-links-on-some-groups?forum=sharepointdevelopmentprevious
Given its a long thread I have copied Hemendra's reply below which I think is what you should be doing.
Go to site settings-->navigation-->click shared documents and click edit from menu.-->Now see the audience section and put users/group there who can view it.
Here is how to add a new Audience

How to customize the Quick Launch with Security
I would like to add links to the quick launch with security control - some menus only show to specific user groups.
But I do not find any way to do that, either through configuration or custom codings. Would you please advise on that? Thanks.
Kevin LiHi Kevin,
By default, the quick launch links are managed through glabal permissions. For instance, users belonging to security groups without the "view approvals" permissions will not see the "approval center" link in the quick launch menu.
Meaning that dealing with permissions and security groups will allow you configuring the quick launch items by groups.
As far as I know, there is no other way to manage security for the quick launch links. Maybe other experts on this forum will give us more insight about coding this feature if possible.
Hope this helps,

Quick Launch and Desktop Shortcuts
Every time I upgrade Safari it installs new quick launch and desktop shortcuts - why?
Can this avoided... Obsolete ones stop working, new ones link to exactly the same place (often) and really Apple should be asking if we 'want' these short cuts in the first place... it a pain to keep deleting and swapping them about just because Apple decide to upgrade.
I have no other software that does this.
Does anyone have a work around?The LabVIEW installer itself cannot create shortcuts on the desktop or remove older versions of itself. You can create an executable to create shortcuts and have your installer launch that executable. But for more complicated things like uninstalling previous versions, you might want to look into a third party installer like Wise or InstallShield.
LabVIEW 6.1 does not really have any installer features that 6.0 did not. 6.1 does use an MSI installer instead of the previously used Wise installer. Theoretically, one might be able to use a utility like Orca from Microsoft to customize the MSI installer, but editing MSI files will not be supported by National Instruments.
