  • New Time Capsule: How to copy Time Machine history from previous disk?

    Hi everybody,
Just got a new Time Capsule which is going to serve as my new Time Machine Back-up.
I've got a year's worth of TM back-up on my old USB disk that I'd like to pour over to the new one.
When I try to do that, it says the Time Capsule can't be changed.
If I simply select the new TC as the disc for TM it obviously starts a new "time line".
How can I either copy the old data over, or merge the two?
    Thanks,
    Rob

don't try copying via finder. that won't work. directly attached TM backups are stored differently from remote ones. directly attached ones
are stored directly in a folder an the drive and the remote ones
are stored in sparse bundles. the following may work. set up the TC to be the new TM drive and start a backup. as soon as it starts stop it using TM menu->stop backup. open the TC drive in finder. there should be a sparse bundle created there. double-click on it to mount it. it should be empty.
then use the "restore" tab in disk utility to clone your old TM drive to the mounted sparse bundle. make sure to check the box to erase destination. when the cloning is finished eject the mounted sparse bundle and try backing up again.

  • Time capsule crash when copying files from it

Hi, I'm trying to copy files from a time capsule to a windows 7 pc. When I do that the time capsule crashes. I can copy files from the windows 7 pc to the time capsule without problems. Has anybody got a clue? I just bought the time capsule, so it has the latest versions.

What do you see that you interpret as a Time Capsule crash?  You can use AirPort Utility to look at the log file of the Time Capsule.  Go into "Manual Setup", then invoke Base Station > Logs and Statistics.  There might be a message in the log that helps explain the problem.

  • Time capsule locks while copying to pc

I have GE 4th gen time capsule with the latest firmware. I have copied 1tb of data to the unit from my dell laptop. Now when I try to copy data off of the time capsule it times out and drops my wireless network. I end up having to power down the time capsule to restart. I can copy small files under a couple mb with no problem, but it fails with multiple files or data larger than 50 mb or so.

That it works with ethernet tells you the fundamental problem is wireless.
There are lots of issues with passing large files via wireless in the purely windows world. I would check your model laptop has not been reported as having this problem..
As I keep trying to suggest.. bypass the problem.. to point the finger at the actual issue.
You bypassed wireless and the problem went away.
You fixed up names and security and still have the problem.. that suggests fundamental issue in the wireless driver that could be either at the TC or Laptop end.
So now we need to figure out which end.. easiest way to do that is a different wireless driver.
    So
    1. Have you updated the wireless driver in the laptop.. don't use the Dell ones.. go right to the source. if it is Intel wireless (open the bottom hatch and look at the model number of the wireless card), download the driver from Intel and install it. Test it.
    2. If you still have issues, I would recommend testing with a different laptop. A Mac one is the obvious thing.. if it works with a Mac then it is pointing more at the PC end. (Invite a Mac owning friend to dinner and invite him/her to test your TC whilst there)
Another alternative is to turn off wireless in the laptop and buy a USB stick wireless. These are cheap enough and you might already have one lying around. AE1000 linksys one is reported to be very good.
    Test it.
    3. If you are still stuck and plainly the issue is not with the TC.. (it is not likely to be) but it can be incompatibility.. latest TC are broadcom chipset. Get a broadcom chipset wireless and see. There are still issues between brands for wireless.
    4. Do a google search for wireless issues transferring large files.. as a mod on a forum in Australia I see those kind of issues come up fairly often although less so recently. How old is the Dell??

  • Problem with 4 sparsebundles to a time capsule - running out of room

hi, if anyone could help me? I am near critical in filling up the time capsule and time machine is not deleting older files within the sparsebundles.
I have 4 macs backing up to a 1Tb time capsule via time machine. I have only 4.4 G left.
Theoretically, the time machines for each individual machines should have started deleting once I hit a critical mark. But, it has simply continued filling and I am worried it is going to crash.
I realized this happend a few months ago when I was keeping docs AND sparsebundles on the timecapsule. but when I called applecare, they guarenteed it was because of the data files and once I had only sparse bundles on the time capsule, there would be no problem.
Well, the problem has reoccured, and I am no longer covered by apple care.
    My questions are:
    1. I was told once that you could export your sparsebundles directly to a USB drive? Can someone tell me how (from within time capsule). Otherwise, copying requires it go through one of my computers (which I assume would then be done wirelessly and be slooooooow). I can't take it in to the apple store until I have the data backed up.
    2. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a setting (ie watermark) that I am simply missing?
Any help would be greately appreciated.

No, there's no "critical mark" if you mean a certain percentage or amount of space remaining. Time Machine will begin deleting old backups when it doesn't have enough room for new ones.
If any of your Macs are running Leopard, however, and have the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box checked in Time Machine Preferences > Options, the backups will fail with a "Backup disk full" message. See #C4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • I'm using my old Time Capsule as an external hard drive.  Can I back it up?

Upon upgrading my older iMac's hard drive to 500GB and more or less filling it, my 500GB Time Capsule became less useful as a backup and more useful as an eternal drive.  I've bought a new 2TB Time Capsule to use as my primary backup/router, and have connected my old 500GB directly to my iMac via ethernet cable to store large media files and free up some disk space.  My problem is that the "TC Backup Disc" partition appearing on my old Time Capsule is the only place I can store files, and this partition won't back up via Time Machine to my new Time Capsule.  I've tried erasing and restoring, but remain unable to create any folders on my old Time Capsule that Time Machine will back up.  Any ideas?

The Time Capsule is a network drive and Time Machine cannot backup files that are already on a network drive.
You might want to take a look at Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, as both of these utilities will backup a network drive like the Time Capsule.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule for off site back up?

I like having a copy of everything at another site in case of a house fire. Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule? I would store that hard drive at work and bring it home monthly or something to back up Time Capsule. Thanks!

Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule?
That is exactly what the Archive function on the Time Capsule is for. Connect a USB drive and click Archive, and a mirror image of your Time Capsule will be copied over to the USB drive.  It's a slow process that will take 4-8 hours depending on how much data is on the Time Capsule, so best to start things late at night and let them run overnight.
Another option would be to use a commercial application like Carbon Copy Cloner to keep your backup.  The advantage to this approach is that once the first "master" backup is done, the application will only back up the changes on the Time Capsule that have occurred since the last backup. So, subsequent backups will be much faster, probably only taking about 10-15 minutes.

  • Time capsule files disappear

I use time capsule 1TG and copied some files onto it like using external hard disk. Everything was fine at the beginning, but one day all files disappeared, can't see any files name on tc.
The files are not really gone, they are still on my tc because I used spotlight to search file names and the file showed up again. But after reboot MBP, all files on TC disappear again, but I am sure the data are still there, just can't see file names.
Anyone has clues about this? Many thanks in advance for help!

Buggy TC. You just need to restart it.
Let me know how you get on.

  • Delete files on my Time Capsule

I've just bought a new MacBook Pro, and transferred all the files I need from my old mac to my new one. Now I'd like to delete all files related to my old mac from my TC, in order to get more space available for back up.
How can I delete the whole profile connected to my old MBP from my TC?

Exactly what the question's title asks.
You really ought to explain exactly what it is you want to do.
If the question is in the context of backing up your Mac using Time Machine and then having the freedom to subsequently erase the files from your Mac, the answer is most emphatically no for the reasons Bob Timmons explained. Time Machine is not an archiving utility. If you erase a file on the "source" volume, it will be erased on the backup eventually - perhaps in as little as one hour. This is by design.
If the question is in the context of using your Time Capsule to simply copy files (using the Finder, for example) so that they can be accessed by all the devices on your network, you can do that. However, if you are also using Time Machine to back up to that same volume, then the answer becomes less clear: Time Machine expects to use all the available space on the backup volume, and eventually running out of sufficient space to back up is another intentional Time Machine design consideration. Time Machine will delete old, expired backups as necessary, but when the Time Capsule eventually becomes full, you will no longer be able to copy anything to it (using the Finder), so that's not a good idea either.

  • Time Capsule - HFS+ Number of File Items Discrepancies

Hi hope someone can shed some light on this for me...
I've just moved from my Lacie NAS drive to a Time Capsule. Having copied everything over (423GB) its all copied over without any errors popping up. However... When viewing "info" of the folder in question there are 82,000 files on the original Lacie drive and yet only 49,000 on the TC?
There is also a slight difference in the "Size Info" regards to the Bytes. Maybe this is from the file system change from FAT or NTFS to HFS+?? I'm not 100% sure?
    So, any ideas??
    Cheers!
    Wez

    Hi Wez,
try to open the Terminal (see "Apple"+"U"), go to the mounted LaCie drive (with "cd /Volume/") and use "ls -la xxxx" to find hidden files (xxxx is the file/volume name). Or use the a "save"/"open" Dialog from a application, with "Cmd""Shift""Period" to Toggles Hidden File Visibility in Snow Leopard.
    This is the problem, maybe,
    Lutz
    p.s.
How to copy the data to the TC.
In general, if the LaCie drive use FAT32 or NTFS, you find lots of ._xxxx files with additional informations. This files are part of the HFS+ filesystem. On my FAT32 drive I find a ._xxxx for each real file. All the time I copy this files to a Mac, I got only the half number of files, because the ._xxxx files became a part of the HFS+.

  • Can i delete documents on my computer after back up to time capsule

I have installed the Time Capsule (correctly I think) but now I want to delete some information on my computer so it runs faster.  How can I ensure that my documents and pictures are backed up to the Time Capsule so I am able to retrieve them later?

You might want to remember that Time Machine....if that is what you used to backup your Mac.....backs up the changes on your Mac.
If you delete a file on your Mac, at some point....Time Machine will delete the file as well.....you just do not know when this may occur.
Even if you decide that you want to gamble and think that it may take some time for Time Machine to get around to deleting the file from your backup on the Time Capsule, the only copy of the file that you have is now on the Time Capsule.
If the Time Capsule drive has a problem, you have no other copy or backup of the file, so you will lose the file.
So, I would only do what you ask about with files that I could afford to lose.
The whole idea about backups is that you have a copy of a file on one disk and a backup on another. If one drive...either your computer or the Time Capsule has a problem, at least you have the other copy of the file on the other drive.

  • Time Capsule crashes when Time Machine starts a backup

I've not searched through the postings here to see if other people have seen a similar problem. I've not attempted to repeat the problem I've seen here so I'm not very clear about the cause.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.4 connected via a network cabled directly to a Time Capsule which is connected to a DSL/Cable modem. The Time Capsule is updated with v 7.3.2 of the firmware. I've got Time Machine enabled but I'm also using the Time Capsule disk (1TB) to store photos that I've previously archived to CD. I'm in the process of copying all the data from CD to the Time Capsule.
Having copied some photo data to the Time Capsule I was trying out some photo cataloguing SW to see if it was any good (iPhoto is no good to me as I don't want to store photos on the local drive of my machine) - Kodak EasyShare v6.1. Having loaded some images into EasyShare I tried to use finder to search for the file names of some of the images to check that EasyShare was not copying images to my local drive. While I was doing this I think Time Machine tried to kick in and start doing a backup. I believe that Time Capsule crashed at this point. Finder froze and after I restarted it (via Force Quit not a re-boot) I discovered that I had no network connection and Mac OS couldn't see the Time Capsule under FInder or via AirPort Utility (the Time Machine backup also timed out and failed). Time Capsule just sat there with the disk spinning and a green light on the front as if all was OK. Actually - the disk just kept spinning (Time Capsule normally shuts down the drive after it is idle for a while). Because of this I'm pretty sure that Time Capsule had crashed.
I experimented with re-booting my Mac but still no network etc so I tried power cycling the Time Capsule and everything came back to life.
I'm guessing that my doing a search (or some other drive activity on Time Capsule) at the same time as Time Machine kicking in with a backup caused Time Capsule to crash.
Perhaps this is not a very interesting point if this problem is not repeatable but - well, I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar behavior...

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • My Time Capsule simply just died!!!

So i came home from work, kind of late and realized my iPhone didnt get any wife reception, so i went and check on the time capsule and realized it was off, so i did the usual unplug and plug back in, but no light came on, no noise , nada!!!  my Time Capsuel is 500GB the IC number is A1302 and its serial number is **914******. I went to my closes retail shop and they told me that apple will swap it for a 175 euros, 70 euros cheaper (according to the rep)... wow i said, i can get a new airport extreme for 188 USD and attach my HDD... any help, assistance will certainly be appreciated.

The power supply is DEAD.. it is a common problem.. in fact so common you are the unusual one,, it has lasted much longer than apple intended.. it is supposed to die on 3years plus one day. (ie the day after all possible warrnanty expires). Yours is a failure.. it lasted 4years .. not good enough really. Apple should have it narrowed down to the day by now.
It is possible to repair it.. the cost of repair can make replacement seem like a really excellent idea..
Considering the new one is AC wireless and your old one is 300mbit N.
The new one is 2TB drive and old one is 500GB.
I would say the economics especially with the small drive means unless you are a good DIYer buy a new one.
But look at the apple refubished store or second hand market for a Gen4 TC.. which is really a good model for often half the price of the new AC ones.. and it seems to have less issues.
I posted several repair methods. Most require some soldering skills.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
Certainly the cheapest method is to replace the capacitors in the existing supply..

You can buy a kit of new caps on ebay for a few dollars.. you can also buy a new or repaired supply for a lot more.

  • Time Capsule folder access

I finally got my time capsule working and copied the old data on my new Macbook Air. However I am not able to get into the folders. It says i am not authorized?

I figured out the ethernet issue. I was using time capsule wirelessly along with the 2 Wire Modem. I just hooked the two together and disabled the wireless function on the Time Capsule with Airport Utility and also turned off Airport. Now the Time Capsule is directly connected to the I-Mac by ethernet. However, I still was not able to restore the i-Photo collection. The Time Capsule would simply not load it to restore. I left it on overnight to load and it was a no go. I have maybe 5,000 pictures so maybe it just can't handle that much even by ethernet. Unless somebody has a different idea, I think I am going to try a complete restoration of the Mac HD volume. I know it will take forever, but I don't know how else to save the i-Photo collection. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
