Port 5353 : how to open it?

Hi,
Bought one of the first ATV. Impossible to connect, not even through direct Ethernet. No show in iTunes under "device". IPod works fine, iTMS too (I buy a lot of music), ATV goes to iTMS fine through Wi-Fi acces. I have 2 Macs : iMac and Macbook. None sees ATV. Went through tons of posts. Nothing helped.
Finally gave ATV to a Windows friend. He switches it on ang gets it IMMEDIATELY in iTunes for WXP. No fuss, nothing, just as in the manual. We share a Wi-Fi network, the same. Same subnet. He did through DHCP. No MAC adressing.
I scanned my ports again and saw that my 5353 was not LISTENing. How to open it? Firewall is disabled, no anti-virus, no NetBarrier, nothing. Music is shared (I see it with the Macbook and the iMac sees the shared Macbook music).
So, I am lost. The 5353 thing is the last chance. But the most difficult to bear is that Windows did it with no trouble.
Thanks and sorry for such a long post.
Alex
Macbook Intel iMAc intel ATV (not connecting)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I install all updates through automatic update. So, I guess it just can't be a wrong version. And I DL'd and tried to install the version you kindly mention in your post. Everything works, I do not have even the slightest problem with both Macs. My .Mac account works fine, my syncing with all my 3 cell phones (Nokia, Motorola, SonyEricsson) work perfectly. IPod works great, Sony cam works great, 3 brands of digital camera connect fine.
In fact, everything is fine. My only problem is the ATV.
Sorry to unpack it again:
- Mac OS X 10.4.9 installed with auto update
- All security updates and all firmwares and Apple updates
- iTunes 7.1.6
- Firewall disabled
- All services opened
- No NetBarrier
- No Third party software (except some widgets)
- ATV works fine with a windows PC on the same router
- I have only one subnet
- I can ping it from my Mac
- ATV can connectr to iTunes
- When I plug an ethernet cable (working) nothing happens.
- iTunes music shared
- My Macbook sees and plays music from the iMAC and vice versa
- Searching for ATV checked
Once again, it works with WXP faultlessly, with DHCP settings. It connected quicker than a bear disappears on a hot day.
Thank you for any idea, because I am stuck. I feel that it is something easy, but can't find it.
Many thanks to all following this thread.

  • Port 5900, how to open for local USER?

    I'm having the same problem as many on this ARD forum - we canot Observe & Control some Macs. I've noticed that the ones we cannot access are running AppleVNCS through port 5900 via 'root', but those we can access are running AppleVNCS via 'user'.
    Is there any way I can force the faulty systems to access through 'user'?
    I have tried various tricks through System Preferences, but I'm not getting the desired result.

    That's an interesting correlation between the user the server process runs as and whether you can successfully initiate a session, however, it shouldn't matter. AppleVNCServer appears to run as the user that is currently logged into the console. Only if there is no console user (machine is at the real login window, not FUS login window popup) does the server runs as root.
    Are you able to connect via screen control if you log a user into the console of one of these machines?
    Is the user for AppleVNCServer tracking with the console user ID? Are there more than one copy of AppleVNCServer running?

  • How to open a port in RV325?

    Hey guys,
    I'm looking for a way to open a port (port 43 - whois) in RV325, so I can check if domains are taken for my customers and I don't want to use an external service for this.
    I tried using the GUI, telnet and SSH, but I couldn't find it in the GUI and I couldn't connect using Telnet or SSH, I also don't see a console port on it to connect via COM port, so how can I do it?
    Thanks.

    please help me on how to open the comm ports..

    Try this, It workd for me. Before doing this make sure you have serial ports on you r computer by following these steps:
    open "regedit"
    go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" > HARDWARE > DEVICEMAP
    and check if there is any serial ports. If htere is any, then use following program to enumerate throught the ports:
    class SimpleRead() {
    portList = CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifiers();
         while (portList.hasMoreElements()) {
         portId = (CommPortIdentifier) portList.nextElement();
         if (portId.getPortType() == CommPortIdentifier.PORT_SERIAL) {
              if (portId.getName().equals(defaultPort)) {
              System.out.println("Found port: "+defaultPort);
              portFound = true;
              SimpleRead reader = new SimpleRead();
         if (!portFound) {
         System.out.println("port " + defaultPort + " not found.");
    }

  • How to open TCP/UDP ports?

    Hi, recently I started poking at my mac, and I blocked some ports from the terminal... My question is how to open them again?
    I found a way to block them, but not how to undo it...
    Any help, please?

    Yes, it is blocked in the whole of middle east. Its like if you buy the device from middle east you wont be even able to use Facetime outside it which is a very poor thing.
    I was lucky enough to be told that facetime doesnot work in the UAE just before i could made a bill. I was planning to buy an iphone 5 from Dubai.
    Luckily i got a US based version from a local vendor and on that Facetime does work. Just the UAE based models do not have facetime on it working.
    Try to search for US based version if you looking out for facetime.

  • Don't know how to open ports

    Hello.
    Could someone please tell me how to open ports on my LinkSys WRV200 Wireless-G VPN Router.
    Thank you.

    Open up internet explorer. On the address bar type the numbers 192.168.1.1 (username is admin, password is admin as well). Go to the Firewall tab. Depending on what kind of port opening you want, you either click on the Port Triggering or Port Forwarding subtab.
    If you are hosting a certain program or application, use port forwarding. If you are just simply trying to use and access it, use port triggering.

    how to open computer hp 2000 to fix loose usb port connector?

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
    The usb ports on the right, next to the power jack, are on a daughterboard and fairly easily replaceable but the left usb port next to the HDMI is on the motherboard. The only way to repair it is to resolder it to the motherboard. Good luck.

    If all you are using is the inbuilt firewall then it shouldn't be blocking outward connections.

  • Opening Firewall Port 5353 solves problems?!

    I found this by Google:
    If you have tried to operate AirTunes with an Airport Express on a Windows XP PC with the firewall (or a third-party firewall) enabled, then you will realise you have problems.
    Rather than disable the firewall, you can just open port 5353 and all will work fine.
    Having said that if you have router with NAT and DHCP this acts as a hardware firewall and computers on your internal network do not need software firewalls. Though some people like them for security and to stop unauthorised (ie spyware) outgoing connections.

    I thought I recognised my own writing...

  • Firewall in 10.5, how to open ports and how to manage?

    I am pulling my hair out with the new firewall in 10.5. In 10.4 I could just set ports as I liked in the control panel, in 10.5 there is no such thing.
    I need to for example open port 49999 to allow PageSender to function in my network.
    I need to open port 5901 to work with JollyFast VNC, as port 5900 is used by Apple Remote Desktop and the conflict if they both use the same port.
    Some of these ports I need permanent open like 59999 and others for one session and than close again, like 5901. Again in 10.4 I made the rule in the pref pane, ticked the box and Bob was your uncle. Now?
    I would like to be able to see what ports are open and active on the machine. I have no idea as to where I could see this.
    And at the same time I would like to keep the firewall as closed as possible as I am often on line in hotels etc.
    So I need help, is there a manual somewhere someone is aware of? Or do you have any answers?

    The new Application Firewall does not work in the same way as IPFW (the main firewall in 10.4).
    Instead of managing ports, it simply controls the access of applications to any port. Thus, if you want PageSender to receive connections, you simply need to switch the firewall to "Set access for specific services and applications", and then add PageSender to the list, with "Allow incoming connections". When you do this, PageSender will be able to receive connections on any port that it needs to.
    If you don't like this method of controlling connections, you can still use IPFW. Apple has removed the GUI, but you can download a GUI application like [NoobProof|http://www.hanynet.com/noobproof> or [WaterRoof|http://www.hanynet.com/waterroof/index.html], and you can then set access for specific ports.
    There are no problems with using both IPFW and Application Firewall.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • How to open a report stored in the CMS with the RDC ?

    Hello,
    With CRXIR2, reports can be stored in the CMS.
    Does anybody knows how to open such a report with the RDC (version 11.5) ?
    I really need to use the RDC because I have to save subreports on HDD
    and it is unavailable with the RAS SDK (neither Java nor .Net).
    Thank you for your help.
    Alain

    Hi Don,
    Thanks for your answer,
    Why saving subreports ?
    - orthogonality reasons... we can import them, why c'ant we do the opposite?
    - consitency reasons... we should be able to do the same as we do with the designer, (why this option is available in the Designer ?)
    Furthermore, the job is already done in Crystal, it should not be so difficult to port it to the RAS.
    - regression reasons... this is something we could do in the past (from Delphi, with the RDC), now the RDC is gone....
    Now I will tell you my personal reason:
    We have huge reports (about 30 subreports), based on huge business views.
    As a result, just loading the report (openClientDocument) takes more than one minute.
    In a production environment the custommers do not want to accept that.
    So:
    - we keep the business views at design time because it's a requirement
    - Once the report designed I try to cut the BusinessViews and replace them by SQL commands
    I suppose you know the RAS to be aware that it can't do that by far.
    I wrote a program to disconnect all the ReportObjects from the BusinessView, it's Ok
    Now I need to remove the BusinessViews from the report and all subreports.
    I can automate CrystalReports for it, but only at the report level...
    This is my particuliar reason for saving subreports.
    Am I the only one to have this request ?
    If you want, of course, I'm ready to help developing those missing things in the RAS.
    I'm serious, tell me if you are interested.
    Thank you again and best regards
    Alain

  • ITunes 6, WinXP, port 5353

    my iTunes insists on trying to access port 5353 every so often, no matter what I do. I've gone through the iTunes preferences three times now, disabling anything having anything to do with network traffic, and still failing. I have disabled sharing my music, accessing other people's shared music, stupid apple wlan speakers that only work with iTunes, and disabled pod casts, I couldn't care less about them. It seems the macs in my network are bombarding my machine, too, with the same annoying feature. Oh well.
    How do I tell iTunes not to try to access that network port, ever, for any reason? By uninstalling it? If the options are either uninstall or blocking it permanently from my software fire wall, I rather uninstall it and find a software that does what I tell it to, and nothing else. Too bad that probably means I have to throw away my 40GB iPod, but that's life.

    Yes, I saw that 5353 was used for Bonjour/music sharing. However I have uninstalled that service...iTunes keeps using it, though.
    (apologies, working from potentially-unreliable memory here, filtered through a lack of basic understanding of the technology ... most of the Snoop Dogg and toonz posts i saw on this have been in threads deleted recently.)
    my understanding is that all itunes versions with music sharing apart from 5.0.0.35 contained a cut-down "internal" version of the Bonjour/Rendevous technology. 5.0.1.4 reverted back to the version of the internal service used by 4.9.
    so i figure that 4.9 version of the internal service (or something similar) is still going on with 6.0.x.
    love, b

  • Does router telnet port need to be open?

    We are a small office whose computers connect to the internet through a Netopia Cayman series router (ethernet). No IT guy ---it was set up by "that phone guy" several years ago who said the firewall was set up. can't find any written manuals at the moment.
    when I got my new iMac I decided to check out the firewall at work from home. Port scan said that port 23-telnet was open. I telnetted to the ip address and guessed the login info on the third try (wasn't changed from what came with).
    1. I know i need to change the password -- but do ieven need to have the port open? We have no need to access the office network from outside. And how do I close it? The firewall is operating in something called ClearSailing mode.
    2. Because i don't have a manual, I am wandering around inside the router trying to figure out what all the terms mean without hurting anything. How do I determine whether port forwarding was ever activated?
    3. I checked the log. Entries of the following types appear a lot. Do they indicate anything untoward has been happening?

    4. Where do i go to educate myself on some of this? ( Back to university is not the right answer )

    Does the port need to be open? yes - otherwise you have no way of managing the router.
    However, does it need to be open to anyone, anywhere? absolutely not.
    The port should be open only to people on the internal network, and not accessible to random internet users.
    Usually there is some option to configure that within the router, but you'd need the router documentation to be able to determine the specific commands. What you need to ensure is that you don't lock out the admin access altogether since then you'd be stuck.
    As for the logs, it's hard to tell. The HTTP lines could indicate remote users accessing the router via HTTP (did you check whether the router has a HTTP interface, too?). Those IP addresses don't translate to known web sites, so it's unlike that they are outgoing connections. If they are incoming connections then you need to lock down the web access port in the same way as telnet, above.
    The SNMP could be a problem, depending on where the request is coming from.
    The chances are it's some automated probe looking for systems to compromise (in which case you should shut down SNMP as well as HTTP and telnet).
    SNMP has valid uses, but if you're not using it right now you won't be missing anything by turning it off.
    Finally, the 'Dest Unreachable' messages aren't likely to be a problem -since they're sourced from the router, that implies those were connections initiated from inside the network, but that were unable to reach their target. I think the other issues are of more concern.
