Port 5596 open and skype worm/trojan??

I did a local port scan on myself and port 5596 is open
Any Ideas what this might be or what commands I can enter to figure it out?
Skype thing
Skype 564 tyler 30u IPv4 0x8352a68 0t0 TCP 192.168.1.100:49975->modemcable058.32-203-24.mc.videotron.ca:56020 (ESTABLISHED)
It initiates these connections to random computers and I am not talking to anyone at all.
Thanks
Tyler

I believe that I had once read on some website somewhere, of whose URL that I cannot recall, that the Skype license agreement is a carefully crafted legally worded agreement that when translated into regular people language says that your using Skype gives consent to allow Skype to use your computer as an ad hoc relay node. What I was reading was something about why CERN (?) didn't allow it's employees to use it, because they were a big bandwidth pipe and many Skype connections would be routed through their network and they didn't like that. I think that these connections being initiated not necessarily under the cognizance/awareness of the local user also prompted organizations like the US Dept of Commerce and possibly other Gov't agencies to forbid use of Skype on its Government-owned/issued computers. I wish I could quote you specific citations of where I saw/heard/read this, not that they would necessarily be authoritative sources (I read it on the internet), but they are probably more authoritative than my post here! Regardless, that is why I refuse to install Skype on any of my computers or allow other family members' computers that have it installed onto my residential WLAN. You might try googling "security hole Skype" or similar search terms and you might find these links that I seem to recall from the distant past.

that gives netstat, LSOF (not included with Solaris, you have to install it) and the proc file system as example of how to find ports.

If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.

  • Unable to close open and blocked web server ports

I have been running the sun webserver 6.1 as a test development environment on my local pc (Windows 2000) at work. The machine crashed while the web server was running, and while the server instance stopped, the ports being used are still open and apparently, still being used. Restarting my machine does not solve the problem.
Using netstat (through cygwin - i am familiar with linux, and have been using cygwin as the easiest way to do many things with the web server) I can see that the ports are indeed being "used", however i cannot find any running processes (through the top or ps command or the task list) associated with the open ports. Also attempts to start the server again fail, and the server complains that the ports are currently being used.
In order to continue to develop I created a new domain using a different set of ports. Since then, I have (in zealous cleanup) removed the domain that was using those ports, and in attempting to setup a different webserver encountered the open ports.
I need/wish to stop the running processes and close the open ports. Any ideas?
    Thanks in anticipation.

There are no such processes running in either the task manager or services.
I do not believe that the domain/web server is running, since the domain instance has since been removed.
However, the ports seems to be stuck on being "used".

I ran a port scan and it does appear that this is an open port on the router, but nowhere do I have anything configured to allow this.
Please help. HOW DO I CLOSE THIS HOLE?
    H

    Hi,
Yes , I do have  UPnP enabled
Yes, this is all the log shows
I used port scanning web sites to test the port (grc & another one). Both returned with the results that the port is open not stealth.
    Hope this helps

  • Cisco E900 ports 1990/tcp and 5916/tcp open on the LAN. Cannot close them.

    Hello,
I just bought a Cisco Linksys E900 wireless router. Can someone explain to me why  the router (192.168.1.1 on my case) has ports 1990/tcp and 5916/tcp open on the LAN?? I cannot find a way to close those ports.
    Just do a simple:
    telnet 192.168.1.1 1990
    or
    telnet 192.168.1.1 5916
and you'll see those ports are open.
    1990/tcp = Cisco STUN Priority 1 port
    5916/tcp = I have no idea
Every client on the LAN (wired and wireless) can connect to those ports on the router. I do not want that to happen. It is unncessary and it is just not secure. I only want the router to have port 443 open on the LAN for the web mgmt interface. I do not want any other unncessary port open.
It would be great to have a response from Cisco directly.
    Thank you for your time.

    Thank you for your response.
The router is already updated to the latest firmware (1.0.04 Build 1).
I had to do the update as soon as I opened the box because the default firmware had an incredible serious bug: after setting up the web management interface on the LAN to work over SSL, it was impossible to access the interface because of an SSL bug in the router. The bug is in the release notes of the firmware... that alone says a lot about the very very poor quality of this router.. you can't have that kind of bug in a finished product....
I was able to close port 1990/tcp by disabling WPS in the router, although doing so was pure luck since the router's UI is terrible..
5916/tcp is still open.. since I was able to close 1990/tcp I don't think this is a defective router.. I cannot return a router to the store just because it leaves a port open, the store, sadly, will not take it back... so please Cisco, can you help with this? this product is faulty, it doesn't work as expected, it's your responsability.. please help
Reset the router manually then reconfigure the settings.

  • New Cridex Banking Trojan variant Combines Data Stealer and Email Worm

    Hi Team,
In an effort to infect large number of people, cybercriminals have developed a new malicious software program that contains functionality to spread itself quickly.
Geodo, a new version of the infamous
Cridex (also known as Feodo or Bugat) banking information stealing Trojan works in conjunction with a worm that sends out emails automatically to continue its self-spreading infection method, effectively turning each infected
Windows system in the botnet for infecting new targets, Seculert warned.

There are many ways which FEP protects you against different kind of malwares, for example using heuristic detection and behavior monitoring , it is possible to detect even unknown malwares. The issue with new malware and cybercriminals is an on-going issue
and for this reason you have regular updates.
If you have sample of this threat, you may submit it to Microsoft Malware Protection Center:

  • How do i find out what tcp ports are open? and where do i look it up?

how do i find out what tcp ports are open? and where would i go to see them? i have a program that is asking for it and i am unable to find where those are listed.

If you are not too tech savvy, try using the Network Utility found in the Utilities folder. Just have the Mac scan itself.
If tech savvy, there's always Fyodor's classic NMap, found at www.insecure.org.

  • Must I open FB, skype, and other IM apps to get push notification in iphone 4s?

Must I open FB, skype, and other IM apps to get push notification in iphone 4s? Because I notice that once i close the apps, it will not send me message. I thought that is what "PUSH" means??

ok, i saw a line saying "If the app requires entering or logging in to an account, you will need to do this before receiving notifications."
so, that means i must "open" the app in background in order to get push notification??
what i mean by PUSH notification is by double clicking your home button, then press on the apps and CLOSE the app and yet you can get message from your friends. I think iphone cannot do that currently?

  • Can't play online games but NAT is open and ports are forwarded correctly. What now?

    Hi,
I have a DSL modem/router from Windstream that is hooked up to a linksy WRT160N which is then wired to my xbox 360. Now I have had problems in the past with the modem/router interfering with the WRT and creating a Strict NAT type. I have fixed that by changing the routers IP address to 10.10.10.1 (recommended by a linksys technical support person) So, now I have a static IP address setup for my 360 and opened all the ports for that and the games I play online but I can't find a game. It just continual cycles in limbo land and I never get a game to play. Is there anything else I need to change in order to fix my issue. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Please follow the below mentioned settings this should fix the issue for you.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 10.10.10.1 and press Enter...
Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...
Click on "Administration" tab and disable the option UPnP and click Save Settings...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done...
    2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
3)Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...
    4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
    IP Address :- 10.10.10.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 10.10.10.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...
IP Address: 10.10.X.[last part of ip in your device]    e.g. if static ip given to the device was 10.10.X.10 get the last part and put that to the empty box.

I will assume that you have the AirPort Utility for Windows installed on your Windows partition ... correct?

Setting up Port Mapping on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) takes two basic steps: 1) Reserve an IP Address for the host device that you want to have accessed from the Internet, and 2) Configure the appropriate ports on the AEBSn to pass Internet traffic to this host device.
You will use the AirPort Utility for both steps.
    For the first step:
o AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > DHCP > DHCP Reservations
o Click the plus button to add a new DHCP reservation for the wireless bridge adapter. You will need the MAC address of this adapter to assign a Private IP address to.
    For the second step:
o AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > NAT > Configure Port Mappings
o Click on the plus button to add a port map.
o Select "Personal Web Sharing" for the Service type. This should auto-populate the Public & Private TCP Ports with the value 80.
o Add 8080 to each of these values; place a comma between them.
Your mappings should looks something like the following:
    o Service: Custom...
    o Public TCP Port(s): 80, 8080
o Private IP Address: <enter the DHCP reserved IP address you created earlier>
    o Private TCP Port(s): 80, 8080
