Port/Connection Routing through Share Internet Connection...need help

Alright here's the situation: I have a Linux server that I bought for cheap from a friend and its upstairs in my bedroom. The router and dsl is downstairs and the server has to stay up in the bedroom. I don't have the cabling to run all the way up and thats tacky anyway. And linux doesnt have wireless support for my wireless card. Sooo I've turned on connection sharing with my new iMac that is in the bedroom as well and internet is coming through airport, while the connection shared with the server is wired. In airport, out eth0 to server.
Ok, so what I'm wanting to do is experiment with multiple types of servers on linux (i.e. Samba, FTP, Mail, etc) but I need to figure out a quick fix on routing or forwarding those connections routes and ports through the mac to the linux box. The linux box has no problem reaching the internet and has its own static ip but is also showing up on network 192.168.0 when the rest of my network is 192.168.1
Any third party free programs for adding advanced routing or easier setup and more features to the OSX internet sharing? Or maybe a tweak ya'll know of?

Hi Aaron,
flying buttress is a GUI for the UNIX firewall built into OSX. It has more functionality than the GUI in the sharing preferences.
By sharing network connection from another mac it will be on a differnent subnet to the rest of your LAN. The mac that is setup as the gateway is effectively acting as a gateway like your router is. So therefore your linux box is behind 2 NAT devices. You would need to setup up 2 sets of NAT rules.
This is quite an advanced setup for someone just experimenting.
I don't have the cabling to run all the way up and thats tacky anyway. And linux doesnt have wireless support for my wireless card.
Cable does not have to look tacky. It can be installed neatly if use use conduit or tack it to the skirting board. Also given that wireless cars cost about £20 you could easily get your linux box connected to your router.

  • Connecting router kills my internet connection/Password reset

    Hello,
I am new to the community so please bear with me.
I am working with a Cisco Small Business WRVS4400N trying to set up a wireless connection without access to internet. The purpose is to connect my phone and computer without the internet. As I am a novice, however, I have run into two problems I was hoping to get some help with.
The first problem I am having is that when my computer is connected to WiFi and I connect the router via ethernet, I lose the internet connection. The computer's network settings say that it is connected to both; my WiFi connection and a Local Area Connection with no internet access. Despite the WiFi showing as connected, however, I am unable to use the internet and all the pages I try to navigate to say the connection has timed out. Since I am new to this, I followed the steps prescribed in the first response here (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1703316/set-link-router-internet-connection.html#.).
The second problem I am having is that when I type in the device IP into a browser and get the username and password prompt, the parameters I am entering do not match up. Is it possible to reset or retreive the username and password? Especially if they were changed during previous use?
Hoping to hear back, all advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Yusif Nurizade

    Who is your ISP....?
Have you opened the ports on the router for PS3....?
Try reducing the MTU value on the router and on PS3 to 1365 and check.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • How to share internet connection using 5G wifi/channel 36~48

I'm using a 15 inch late 2013 MacBook Pro with retina display running 10.10.1 and iPhone 5S A1530 running iOS 8.1.
I use an Apple thunderbolt to ethernet adapter at work for internet and it's all cool and fine.
The problem comes when I try to share the internet connection with my phone through wifi. It's alright if I use channel 1 to 11. But when I try the 5G channels: 36, 40, 44, 48, it just doesn't work. The wifi icon in the top right corner of my screen has a wave animation and then nothing. It just goes back to grey instead of an arrow pointing upwards. In the slimmest hope of a display error, I search nearby wifi signal with my phone and nothing.
I have a 5G router at home and both my laptop and my phone can connect to its 5G signal. So the hardware should be fine.
It's weird since it should be working as Apple decided to put an option there for user to choose from all the channels, among which lie the four 5G channels.
So to conclude, my laptop with a functioning 5G wifi module can share internet connection through 2.4G wifi but not 5G.
Hope someone could help me with it. Thanks.

I've turned on NAT and attempted to create a new Subnet using DHCP but it doesn't offer me Airport in the network interface menu (only en0 and fw0). Airport is turned on in network system prefs.
Have you actually configured the AirPort network with its own IP address settings (in a different subnet from the wired ethernet port)?
Having the interface enabled isn't enough to make it a viable gateway interface. It needs an IP address/subnet mask too.

  • How to share internet connection with KDE networkmanager applet

I mainly use wireless around my house and like to use one computer to share it's wireless to another when installing Arch, until I can get KDE and networkmanager installed so I can easily connect to the wireless. I've always been able to easily share internet connections with Ubuntu, but when I try it with Arch, with Gnome OR KDE (and their respective applets), It just doesn't work.
Is there some library or backend I need to install to make ICS work?
    Thanks!

If this helps at all, here is what I am currently trying: I open up the network settings KDE Control Module, select "Wired", select the device (eth0) and click edit, and under the "IPv4 Address" tab  selecting "Shared" from the "Method" drop-down.
Also, to make it clearer, I am trying to share wlan0(on device 1) through eth0 to eth0 on device 2. Also, device 2 is running the Arch setup and I am telling it to connect to eth0 via DHCP after I select the remote mirror to use. I have managed to do this before when device 1 ran Ubuntu.
I've searched Google, the forums, read the wiki pages for KDE and networkmanager, and can't seem to find a mention of internet connection sharing (pertaining to my usage case; the forums have some posts of people trying to use their computer to broadcast eth0, I'm trying to do the opposite) anywhere on them. In fact, I'll gladly write the section myself if I figure this problem out.
    Hope this extra information helps!

  • [Solved]Share internet connection

    Hi guys
I know the title seems kinda dumb but maybe is not as easy as it seems (or im having a brain segmentation fault).
What i want to do is this, i have a wireless router on the living room and i just bought a PC and put it in my bedroom i alredy had a netbook and i want to have internet connection in my PC i see 3 options:
    1. buy a giant ethernet cable, and pay like 25 euros, or 2 not so big cables a put a switch in the midle and pay even more
    2. buy a wireless card for my PC, pay 15 euros and it will problably not work in linux
    3. connect my netbook to the wireless then connect PC and netbook via ethernet cable (crossover right?) and share internet connection
I rather option number 3 (in long term i will eventually go with number 2) but i dont know how to do it.
Alredy tried windows to windows but of course Microshit didnt put Internet Connection Share on windows 7 starter version (the one theat came up with the netbook).
I only have Windows on the PC yet cause i want internet so i can install arch so option 3 has to be linux-to-Windows(i also want internet on windows, not because i use it that much but you never know), but then when i install arch how i will i get the packges to configure the network without internet.
Anyway i will problably try to talk to my Network Fundaments Teacher in College next week but i wanted this working this weekend so i could install arch.
Help me please just bought the tower and i cant do shit with it (no internet no graphics card)
    Sorry for my poor english

Turns out it does work, somehow wicd says im not connected to wireless but i am :?
i dont care its working its all that matters.

  • Easiest way to share internet connection?

Please advise the easiest way to share internet  connection. I have a default network setup. Just a desktop with dhspcd for client connections and no network manager. I've inserted another nic and want to share internet connection with another computer.

    @The Saint
Do you mean I should manually assign a static IP to my local interface using Persistent configuration on boot using systemd? It's so ruddy complicated! I am deliberately posting in the Newbie Corner to find a simple solution.
What address, subnet, netmask, etc. should I choose if my primary interface has: inet 192.168.0.11  netmask 255.255.255.0  broadcast 192.168.0.255, if it matters at all?
Or perhaps I could use netctl to set up the interface as suggested here: [link=https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NAT%27ing_firewall_-_Share_your_broadband_connection#IP_configuration]IP configuration[/link], but I am not sure what provides the existing connection. It's a default setup. I think it's dhcpcd. Would it be OK to have one interface configured through dhcpcd and another through netctl?

  • How to share Internet connection from Leopard to iPhone 3G?

    Hi!
How do you share Internet connection from Leopard to iPhone 3G?
So far I've managed to create a network and I joined my iPhone to the network. But when I turn on Internet Sharing from Leopard, iPhone's Safari won't use the connection. It either starts to use EDGE/3G or says that it isn't connected to the Internet...
    What went wrong?

I have managed to get it work, but only when I completely turn my desktop computer's firewall off. To do this, select the Security icon in System Preferences, then click the Firewall tab. Next, select the 'Allow all incoming connections' option. I wish there was a way to configure individual ports so that I didn't have to leave my firewall wide open, but I haven't figured out how to do that so far.

  • E71: seems impossible to share internet connection...

    Hi nokia users,
Since a few days I am back to Symbian, after using Windows Mobile for a year. Got a Nokia E71 and really love it (user interface, phone and onboard functions are so much better!!), there is one problem although: whatever I try (see below), it seems impossible to use the phone as an external modem (and that’s a must have function for a phone for me). Important to mention: the mobile internet connection are working fine on the phone itself, AP settings seems to be OK. I tried following:
    - Fixed cable connection, using the E71 USB profile ‘Share internet connection). Phone installs Nokia Connection Manager on my computers and tries acting as a modem. Got the error ‘No modem found’
    - PC Suite One Touch Access: with the USB cable or Bluetooth connections there is no problem in connecting phone with the computer. When I try to connect to the internet with One Touch Access, the connection fails (with error messages ‘No modem found’ or ‘Could not use the connection. Modem could be busy or modem is not configurated properly’). I tried several settings: choose my provider, manually configurations, nothing worked
    - JoikuSpot (let your symbian phone act as a wifi hotspot to share mobile internet connection): installs seamlessly, computers can see and connect to JoikuSpot, but then nothing happens. 0-0 packets are send and received when I check the status on the phone.
All the above I tried on two different Windows XP Home computers with compatible Bluetooth stacks (first tried Bluesoleil and then the standard Microsoft Bluetooth stack), with three different versions of Nokia PC Suite (6.7.22 + 6.86 + 7.07).
I hard-reset the phone several times (via *#7370#). I did not synchronise data to use a clean phone. Nothing worked. What worries me is that even the USB connection gave no response, it makes me think that the onboard modem is broken.
If you have any ideas what I can try, please share them with me!
    Thanks a lot and greetings,
    Wouter

Have you downloaded the bluetooth modem drivers? You might also need the cable driver.
You can get the cable driver here:
    http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/cable-drivers
The Bluetooth drivers are in the downloads section of the E71 section of the Nokia page, but for some reason pasting a link won't work
I managed to get the trial of joikuspot premium working (on a mac), but you should be aware that the lite version of joikuspot just connects you to their home page. It's a demo only really, I have never been able to use it for sharing my phone's connection.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone 3GS can't share internet connection with a windows 7 64 bit version?

I have an iPhone 3GS with the latest iOS installed, then the personal hotspot option is ON and it shares internet connection to a laptop with Windows 7, 32 bit version and with the latest version of itunes installled (10.6.1.7).
But when I connect this same iPhone to another laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit version with the latest version of itunes 64 bit, there is no internet sharing, no error, no signal of fails, it is just as if the hotspot option were OFF.
Its is posible to share internet from iPhone 3GS to a PC with Windows 7, 64 bit version?

Hey there @slee , welcome back
I would suggest trying the steps in this guide for the installation troubles you are having on your one specific Windows 7 computer.

You can also try disabling your firewall while you run the installation to see if that helps.

  • How to share internet connection from notebook to mobile phone with micro usb cord in Debian based OS? (reverse tethering)

I want to share internet connection from notebook to my mobile phone (Keon) with micro usb cord (because I don't have wifi). I found in Firefox OS (version: Boot2Gecko 1.1.1.0-prerelease) Settings only the possibility to share internet from mobile phone to PC. I use a Debian based OS: Knoppix. I tried to accomplish this with Networking Manager and I did a new wired connection via my phone with "Shared to other computers" IPv4 Settings and with FE:...:02 (usb0) MAC address. But on my phone there is not internet although the connecton between my notebook and phone is estableshed.

    Hi Pimpo,
Thank you for posting your question. I was trying to reproduce your the Shared network, and I would love to know what kind of network you used to connect. This is not possible as of yet and I will file a bug being able to do this, but to make sure I have the right steps on the bug can you confirm the set up of the shared network please?
Also this is currently not possible because the software does not know how to send network traffic over usb, assuming you do not have the ability to turn the computer into a wifi hot spot, which I would recommend instead...

Dear service provider, I'm unable to login to facebook even though i tried to uninstall and again reinstall as per the observation from the forum discussion.. but still it gives me arror as Timeout connection, or connection failure and check internet connection.. how to troubleshoot, pls suggest me..
2ndly I'm unable to search by some of the keywords in itunes. means iTune is not fetching the required information rather it gives no result found message..

Have you tried a hard reset of the iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, work through each of the troubleshooting suggestions in this Apple support document as necessary.

  • I can't update my ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server"(despite internet connection being fine). Also, when I try and update software it starts then stops after 2 seconds

I can't update my Ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server" despite internet connection being fine. When I receive a software update message;I say install and it starts updating then stops after 2 seconds. Help! (It is a 3rd gen IPod touch(I think)). Presumably as a result of this, I have tried to put my library onto my gf's new iPod touch and it just charges it..doesn't download my library onto the touch).

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem
