Port opening among virtual machines
Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if I can close/open port among virtual machines. Say I have two Azure-based virtual machines and want to open a specific port from machine A to machine B. Is it possible without the implementation of a firewall between A and B.
Your suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Hi Thuan,
You could refer the following link for details on how to set up an endpoint in Azure Virtual Machines.
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-set-up-endpoints/
Please be advised that each endpoint has a Public port (It is used by the Azure load balancer to listen for incoming traffic to the virtual machine from the Internet) and a Private port (It is used by the virtual machine to listen for incoming
traffic, typically destined to an application or service running on the virtual machine).
Also, When you create an endpoint (Other than RDP and SSH) for the virtual machine, you'll need to ensure that the firewall of the virtual machine also allows the traffic for the protocol and private port corresponding to the endpoint configuration.
Regards,Malar.

Cannot open 2 Virtual Machines at the same time to access the same Database
Folks,
Hello.
I am installing Oracle Database 11gR2 RAC system using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2) on the top of VMPlayer 3.
The VM rac1 and rac2 run correctly when one of them is shutdown.
Their locations are F:\VM_RAC\rac1 and F:\VM_RAC\rac2.
While rac2 is running, I open rac1. But this error message comes up:
Error: "Cannot open the disk F:\VM_RAC\sharerac\asm1.vmdk or one of snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: failed to lock the file."
While rac1 is running, I open rac2. But this error message comes up:
Error: "Cannot open the disk F:\VM_RAC\sharerac\asm1.vmdk or one of snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: failed to lock the file."
The 2 error messages are the same. This means I cannot open 2 VMs rac1 and rac2 at the same time. When we run RAC system, we have to open 2 machines or more than 2 machines at the same time so that all machines can access the same Database Server.
My question is:
Can any folk tell me how to have rac1 and rac2 run at the same time ?
Thanks.You need to disable disk locking, which ordinarily is performed by the first VM to prevent any other VMs from corrupting your vmdk files via uncoordinated writes. You will have to shutdown both of your VMs and edit the *.vmx flat file for each, adding lines like the following (settings taken from workstation 6, but should be nearly identical settings for VM Player 3.x):
http://crosbysite.blogspot.com/2007/10/clustering-in-vmware-workstation-6.html
scsi1.sharedbus = "Virtual"
disk.locking = "false"
diskLib.dataCacheMaxSize = "0"
diskLib.dataCacheMaxReadAheadSize = "0"
diskLib.dataCacheMinReadAheadSize = "0"
diskLib.dataCachePageSize = "4096"
diskLib.maxUnsyncedWrites = "0"
A few comments:
- your shared disks (scsi1) must be on a separate virtual scsi bus than the boot disk (scsi0), to allow setting the sharedbus flag as seen above.
- you must also ensure the cache parameters and unsynced writes settings are set to guarantee that all IO is immediately flushed to the vmdk file so the other VM can immediately access the latest version of data. -
Can't open Virtual Machines after "Archive and Install" of Snow Leopard OS
Hi all,
Please bear with me while I provide a bit of background info for my issue:
I just installed a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5, during which I was actually forced to archive and install my Snow Leopard because of an installation error. So, I inserted my Snow Leopard disc and let the OS X installer do its thing. I remember, somewhere along the way, an admonishment that this process may somehow corrupt any virtual machines that may be installed, but throwing caution to the wind, I went ahead anyway.
Well, turns out it did indeed corrupt my installation of Parallels 6 somehow, and now none of my VMs work. When I open Parallels, and select File -> Open, then select whichever VM I want, a screen flashes so quickly I can't see it (I assume it says something like "Opening XYZ Virtual Machine"), and then.......nothing.
Thus far, I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Parallels 6 (using the KB article that directs you to delete a bunch of files via Terminal after running the packaged uninstaller) and I deleted my VMs and restored backup copies of them from several months ago.
I'm now at a loss - any ideas what I can do to get Parallels to function again? I don't know if somehow permissions were modified, or if there are any other particulars that the reinstall of Snow Leopard may have made to cause parallels to be unable to open my VMs.
Appreciate any advice in advance!I think I would look at if you have the latest Parallels;
clone and backup your system and files before doing anything;
boot off 2nd hard drive and run Apple First Aid + (Disk Warrior or DG3 or TechTool Pro 5).
Always be prepared to be able to restore your system to prior point, that could even mean keeping 10.6.4 around for a month until you know 10.6.5 and 3rd party software and drivers all play nice together.
Bottom line: invest in two backup sets and methods; a copy of SuperDuper or CCC; and Disk Warrior.
I've used VBox, Fusion but not Parallels, plus Windows XP Mode, VHDs and VMs under Windows Vista/7.
I'd go back to ERASE and INSTALL and then do all your updates, then start on 3rd party with main packages first (CS5 and others). Off load, save, backup everything and anything you might need first of course.
Last but actually #1: a small 30GB OS X 10.6.5 drive volume (can take the 30GB from one of your backup drive is fine) so you can run the latest DU plus other system maintenance (DVDs get old, out of date, slow to boot, can't use Finder and other programs). -
When I try to open the Virtual Machine console I get the error:
Cannot access virtual machine console. The request timed out.
I had no problem with this until Firefox did an upgrade to 3.6 and now it doesn't work and I have to use IE to open the console.
I can see lots of other people have this same problem so am wondering when it will be fixed.Look at this blog post for some work arounds for the windows version.

Use DVD drive from Virtual Machine
Hi! I have successfully installed Oracle VM Server and Manager Template on the same machine.
I also have created and run a Virutal Machine from the OEL 5.3 Template from Edelivery.
Now I need to use the DVD ROM drive because I need to install E-Business Suite from that VM.
How can I mount the DVD ROM so thats it usable from within a VM?sumit kapila wrote:
I have installed a VM manager on one machine and a VM server on the other. I have also installed OEL4 (virtual machine) on the server through the manager. But when i open the console of the virtual machine it is not detecting the cdrom. How can it be detected??Did you even read the posts above yours? They explain exactly how to provide CD data to a guest.
Also how to open that virtual machine on some other machine or on the server??I have no idea what you mean. If you're talking about connecting to your guest over the network, you can use SSH. -
Can't install drivers and software for hp c7180 on virtual machine with no USB port
I have a virtual machine running Windows XP to use some old software that isn't compatible with Windows-7. I also would like to print to my HP C7180 all-in-one printer from the XP VM. I downloaded the entire 520MB app and driver package, and then just the 72MB driver package, but both give me errors stating:
This system does not meet one or more of the minimum requirements needed to install this product. The installation cannot continue.
Requirement/Details and Guidance
USB Drivers/This computer does not have the necessary USB software support to allow completion of a USB installation. The installation cannot continue until this is resolved.
USB Hardware/Required Action: Click Cancel to exit this software installation. In order to install this device as a USB device, please refer to your computer documentation or USB add-in card documentation for more information about USB drivers.
I don't want to do a USB installation, but a Network installation as this all-in-one is connected only to my network.
Is there any way to force this software (with an option/switch) to only do a network installation? It never gets to the part where it asks what type of install where you can choose USB or Through the Network.
A link to where I can simply download the drivers that would allow me to print only would work as I can create a local LPR printer port using the printer's IP address.

How to view the open ports of a remote machine?
is ther anyway for java to view the open ports of a remote machine.
i am developing a remote desktop sharing program...i remotely control a user's machine on LAN. so i sometimes need to launch a website,launch an application, or give a message to the user on the remote machine from
my console.
so please help me in providing the java code to implement the above features.What you are asking, it the first step towards the dark art. But then, why make a tool for yourself, I am sure there would be plenty available.

RCU.bat is not opening in my virtual machine.
Hi,
I am trying to run the rcu.bat file my virtual machine but it is not responding. It opens on my local host, however, not on my Windows 2008 server guest OS. Please advise.
I have tried the following.
1. Rebooted the system (both local & virtual)
2. Reinstalled JDK
3. Made sure there is no spaces in the directory where it is Bin file is saved.
It was working initially, however, I could not move forward because I had forgotten the service name of my DB. Now when I re-running it after a while, it does not respond.
Please advise.
Thanks,
SereneCheck the compatibility; try with Window XP service pack3
BTW: Your DB is Oracle? Then they are couple of ways to know the service name
Go to Windows services look for OracleService, service name would be after name after OracleService, in my case OracleServiceXE
XE is service name.
Also you can look at tnsnames.ora

Regarding ports opening for patching client machine in DMZ.
Hi ,
Regarding SCCM patching to Client Machine on DMZ.
I have SCCM server and WSUS server
both are different machines.My software update point is configured to port 8530.
I have a client machine in DMZ and want to do patching for the DMZ machine.
Ports opened from my DMZ machine to SCCM server are 445,135,80,443,8530
1.Do the above ports are fine to do patching ?
2.Do we require communication between DMZ and SCCM server on port 8530 for patching on DMZ machine?
Regards,
ArjunHi Arjun,
The answer to the first question you will find in the link Torsten posted.
The answer to the second question: Whether you should open port 8530 depends on where your Software Update Point and where the Site Server are. It must be opened for the following communication:
Client -- > Software Update Point
Site Server < -- > Software Update Point
Software Update Point -- > Upstream WSUS Server
If you have only a client in DMZ the port must be opened for the communication with the SUP.
Regarding the 3rd statement: If you are not able to telnet to the port on the server, this would mean that the communication is blocked somehow. You must make sure, that you are able to telnet to it.
Hope this helps. Regards,

Hello All,
I am the Systems Admin for a production box running SQL Server 2008 R2. I have been ask to do the following and and trying to figure out if it's even possible.
1. The Production Server is named ProductionA
2. Create 3 Administrator accounts on ProductionA each with access to the SQL Server instance on ProductionA. Use Standard SQL Server login for credentials. i.e. Username/Password and assign the role sysadmin.
3. Install 3 Virtual Machines on ProductionA each with Windows 2008 R2 64 bit operating system.
4. For each Virtual Machine, Install SQL Management Studio and write down the IP Address assigned to each VM.
5. Using Remote Desktop Connection, connect to each virtual machine to be able to manage the SQL Server.
Is this possible? And, why am i doing it? Because I DO NOT want the three people who will be having access to the production SQL Server to also have access to the primary host ProductionA. Since I have to allow them to RDC into the box
to manage the SQL Server, I figure why not create a separate VM for each one of them and they can RDC into those instead.
Does this make any sense?
Any tips are greatly appreciated. The main reason for doing this is because the three people who will be accessing the box, I need to isolate each one of them and at the same time keep them off of the primary ProductionA.
Thanks for your help.

Hello M,
Since you dont want the 3 guys to have access to Production machine A.You can install SQL Server client .By client i mean SQL server management studio(SSMS) on there local desktop and then create login for them in SQL Server.Open port on which your SQL server
is running for three of the machines so that they can connct.Now with SSMS installed on each machine each can connect to SQL server from there own machine.
I would also like you to be cautious with giving Sysadmin privilege to all three of them ,first please note down what task they would do and then decide what rights to be provided.
Your option will also work but you need to create 3 VM for that .Which is more tedious task.
Hope this helps

Problem installing SCE 2010 on a virtual machine
I'm having issues while installing SCE on a clean Hyper-V virtual machine running Windows 2008 R2.
I've tried several options:
- all-in-one from scratch, no SQL or serverroles/features installed -> error 1603
- seperate SQL and SCE Management Server -> Management server installation fails, error 1603
Different variations including and excluding reporting and VM Management with the same results.
I then went and tried to install tbe Management server on a physical box -> success!
However, I can't use this box for SCE and need to virtualize the whole thing.
I'll dig through the SCE setup log files to see where it goes wrong.
In the mean time, any ideas/suggestions anyone?

tried several times and troubleshooted my way through all the blogs. This is what I have done:
Re-imaged the server (twice),
Verified NetBios and FQDN is similar,
Opened all required ports first and also disabled firewall eventualy,
Using Domain Admin account,
Removed ISS and reinstalled(SCE still complaing IIS needs configuration),
Removed ISS again and let SCE setup fix prerequistes (SCE still complaining IIS needs configuration),
Also below please find my exact log... The sucess of my SCE 2010 installation is VERY KEY for us, but I believe for the product team as well. We are busy building an Enteorise Management Architecture in a hosted/multi-tennant environment and at this moment
our POC is a showstopper :(.

I'm desperated, it happened other times in these days, 4.3.16 never worked for me, but i've seen that 4.3.16-2 was released and I tried it.It didn't work, here's the log file.

I read on the wiki and it's written that the problem is the vboxsf module not loaded but

I am creating a cloud service on azure with 2 virtual machines using java sdk API. Service created successfully.
My input endpoint details are as follows.
INPUT ENDPOINTS
Head : 191.238.144.47:2400
Head : 191.238.144.47:22
Node0 : 191.238.144.47:43211
For Head instance port 2400 is for HTTPS and port 22 is for SSH and for Node0 instance port 43211 is for SSH.
But I am having problem with doing a ssh on Head instance. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. Same problem with HTTPS also.
I have some application running over there but when i try to access it thru browser sometimes it works but most of the time doesn't. When I restart the instances from azure portal, its works after
that(not always but most of the time).
Now I am confused what is going on there. I am creating cloud service and virtual machines using java sdk and setting input endpoints also. After creation of all instances i restart every instance programmatically .
I am not sure whether restart is required or not. It must be something to do with input endpoints only but not able to get the right thing i guess. When i do the same thing thru azure portal(creation of cloud service with virtual machines and setting up input
end points) everything works fine but not achieving the result when implementing it by java sdk API. Please help me.HI Nithin,
Thanks for your reply. I am setting the endpoints after creating my instances using update call. Here's the code snippet.
AzureService aServ = new AzureService(session);
if(aServ.checkNameAvailability(clusterName)) {
aServ.createHostedService(clusterName, "dbX cluster");
// Creating head instance
aServ.createHead(clusterName, imgName, headType, userName, pswd);
// Setting end points for head node
String name = "ssh";
int port = 22;
aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, "Head", name, port);
// Restarting head instance
aServ.restartVM(clusterName, "Head");
String roleName = "Node";
String tmpRoleName = "";
for(int i=0; i<noi; i++) {
port = 43210+(i+1);
tmpRoleName = roleName + i;
// Creating node instance
aServ.createVM(clusterName, tmpRoleName, imgName, nodeType, userName, pswd);
// Setting end points for node instance
aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, tmpRoleName, name, port);
// Restarting node instance
aServ.restartVM(clusterName, tmpRoleName);
// Method to update the input endpoint details
public void updateVMInputEndpoint(String clusterName, String vmName, String name, int port)
throws Exception {
VirtualMachineGetResponse resp = computeManagementClient.getVirtualMachinesOperations().
get(clusterName, clusterName, vmName);
VirtualMachineUpdateParameters updateParameters = new VirtualMachineUpdateParameters();
//get the configuration list
ArrayList<ConfigurationSet> configlist = resp.getConfigurationSets();
//get inputendpoint list and update it
ArrayList<InputEndpoint> endpointlist = configlist.get(0).getInputEndpoints();
InputEndpoint inputEndpoint = new InputEndpoint();
inputEndpoint.setEnableDirectServerReturn(false);
inputEndpoint.setPort(port);
inputEndpoint.setLocalPort(port);
inputEndpoint.setName(name);
inputEndpoint.setProtocol(InputEndpointTransportProtocol.TCP);
endpointlist.add(inputEndpoint);
// Open port for https on head node
if(vmName.equals("Head")) {
inputEndpoint = new InputEndpoint();
inputEndpoint.setEnableDirectServerReturn(false);
inputEndpoint.setPort(2400);
inputEndpoint.setLocalPort(2400);
inputEndpoint.setName("https");
inputEndpoint.setProtocol(InputEndpointTransportProtocol.TCP);
endpointlist.add(inputEndpoint);
updateParameters.setConfigurationSets(configlist);
//required for update
OSVirtualHardDisk osVirtualHardDisk = resp.getOSVirtualHardDisk();
updateParameters.setOSVirtualHardDisk(osVirtualHardDisk);
updateParameters.setRoleName(resp.getRoleName());
OperationResponse updtResp = computeManagementClient.getVirtualMachinesOperations().update(clusterName, clusterName, resp.getRoleName(), updateParameters);
And every time i am creating a new cloud service along with head and node instances. Region is "South Central US".
I am setting ProvisionGuestAgent field to true at instance creation time. Thank you.
