Portable but powerful?

I'm very sorry if this has been asked a million times before but so far I haven't found anyone with quite the same requirements as me.
So currently I am looking at getting a macbook mainly for graphics (Photoshop/Illustrator) but I will be doing a lot of travelling back and forth as I'll have a main work computer (iMac) at college. So I am essentially looking for something that is grunty enough to run everything I need while at home but also doesn't break my back during the out and about sections of my day. I should point out that it's not really a quick walk to and from the college I'll be walking about 5 miles a day during the week so weight is a factor.
Anyway my main question is, Macbook pro 13" (retina or non) or macbook air 13"? I understand the macbook pro is more powerful but the screen is rather low res? Any help is welcome!

The Air is you least desirable choice in terms of performance.
The Retina has to be purchased with care since the RAM and SSD are permanent features and cannot be altered later.
The regular MBP can be altered to accept up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD as conditions require.
If you are really serious about graphics performance a 15" MBP has the same flexibility as the afore mentioned 13" MBP for RAM and storage and with a dedicated GPU will be far superior for graphics than any of the others.  Also it has a high resolution, anti glare display option which I feel is desirable.
Ciao.

  • Blank screen but powers on

i have an older imac bought in i think about 06 i cut the power button on and you can hear it powering up and the light in bottom right hand corner also lights up, but there is a blank screen. No picture at all. What can possibly be wrong. please help.

Very difficult to troubleshoot but almost certainly it's a hardware failure of some type. My guess is one of these three:
    Failed HD
    Failed Graphics Card
    Failed Display
If you have another Mac available  you can try connected the two via Firewire Target Mode (Google it) to see if you can see the HDD, if you can then you know it's 2 or 3. My recommendation though is to take it to an Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed. On a 6 + year old system it's anyone's guess.

    here are my needs:
    - fill tags from filename
    - rename file from tags
    - edit multiple files simultaneously (set track number, album title, artist, delete tag entry)
    - id3v1/v2
already tried kid3 and picard, but both are not fitting my needs. also amarok is not powerful enough.
do you know one? please tell me...

I maintain audiotag, which does all you ask for with a command line interface.
Give it a try, and I'd love to hear your feedback if it doesn't work out for you at least

  • HT1665 My iPhone 4 will not charge, but powers on when plugged in. Suggestions?

Yesterday, my phone charged just fine and now, it's as if my charger cable has become Google. As stated in the title, it doesn't charge, but after I turn it off and plug it in, my phone powers on normally. So, I'm hoping to get some suggestions as opposed to my last resort: Buying a brand new, over-priced charger that will stop working only after a month and a half just as my current one has.
I'm assuming that the problem is my charger cable because I've tested it on other iPhones and got the same result.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
Also, try a different charger, they are not that expensive.

  • MBP MA610LL won't boot with a working drivem but powers up

I have a MBP that powers up and won't boot. I swap HD with a friends drive (same system) and it still won't boot. Any ideas? Bus problem? Bad RAM? Should I sent to tech support, but I have don't have the service plan.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can you boot from a disc? One thing to try is to hold down "D" while starting up and try to boot from Install Disc #1. This should get you to the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended version of the test--it will check your hardware, including the RAM. If you have a hardware problem, like bad RAM, it will give you an error code. If you get an error code, please post back with it.
If you do not get any error codes, eject the disc. Then boot from it again, this time holding down "C" as you boot up. Navigate to Disk Utility, click on your hard drive by brand name, and go to the First Aid tab. Verify and repair if possible both permissions and the disk. This may take a while. Post back with how it went.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could also make an appointment with the genius bar and take it there. This won't cost anything just to talk to the genius, and if you get a smart genius, he might be able to figure out what is wrong and what to do about it. If you decide to do this, go ahead and run the AHT first and bring along the discs that originally came with your machine.
    Good luck!

  • Portable bus-powered (Firewire works, USB doesn't ?) hard drive for PB ?

Does anyone have any experience with the OWC Mercury On-The-Go 100GB portable drive ? It's $250 at OWC (macsales.com).
Any other choices to consider ? Macworld gave the OWC drive it's Editor's Choice back in May when it was $300. It's got a case, dual interface (FW/USB), and boots OS X over FW.
    Powerbook 1.5GHz 15 & Dual 2.3 desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

We've bought 10-12 of the Mercury drives for some of our traveling art directors in the past 6 months, and everybody loves them. The work great.
I bought one myself a few years ago and it's still chugging along.

  • 770-C45 not POSTING but powers ON (fans & lights working)

Alright guys, I received my parts (cheap upgrade build) yesterday and connected it all up only to find a 'NO SIGNAL' message on my monitor.
    Specs are as follows:
    MSI 770-C45
    AMD Athlon II x4 620
    2GB DDR3 1600mhz Hyperx Memory Cl9(9-9-9-27)
Zotac 9800GT Eco Edition (Does not require cable from PSU)
    Hiper TypeR 530W PSU
I initially connected all my components (3x SATA HD drives, 1x SATA DVD drive) but later tried going down the basic route (components stated above) but still to no avail. I am able to power everything ON as all the fans are working and the 'ActivePhase LED1' turns blue but when connected to my monitor it stays blank and goes into sleep mode after displaying the 'NO SIGNAL' message. I then tried switching the PC off but both the power button and restart button seem to be frozen (even after holding the power button down) so I resorted to the swith on the PSU itself.
    So far i've tried:
    1. Taking everything out and reconnecting/checking cables
    2. Using a different GPU (my old 7800GT) which still gave my the same outcome (No signal).
    3. Clearing the CMOS using the jumper
    4. Changing the RAM position (from DIMM1)
So i'm basically stumped as to what to do next Any ideas guys?

Did you connect the 12V CPU power?
You've gotta be kidding me!!! I foolishly thought the CPU power was the one next to the main M/B one as it was a 4 pin but after searching the motherboard for another 4pin CPU socket it was right there next to the CPU!!! How could I have missed that! (Mind you the black PCB does camouflage the black sockets...)
Thanks a lot for the right solution

  • Re: 770-C45 not POSTING but powers ON (fans & lights working)

Yep, did you update or do you have bios 1.4 installed? I flashed my board today and the picture does not show when it boots even if the logo is enabled in bios, when I flash it back to 1.3 it comes back

    Quote from: Steve1077 on 05-November-09, 22:50:18
I was asking him if he had the latest bios installed, not you, a simple enough question, if you don't have this board I'm not interested in your opinion, I have no problems with this board and I updated the bios because I felt like it, no other reason, and I really don't care if you think that’s no reason to update it, I know what I’m doing, I only wanted to know if it was a bios bug so I could report it to MSI
Be happy you didn't have a BIOS update failure.  If you post your specs and the details of your issue, I'm sure people will still be happy to help you.

  • Early 2011 17" MBP -- USB 3.0 portable, reliable, bus-powered option?

    Hi everyone,
I have the above mentioned MacBook Pro, and have been scouring the Internet for quite a while trying to find a solid USB 3.0 solution.
Ideally what I'm looking for is accesibility for portable, bus powered USB 3.0, 7200 RPM hard drives.
I know there are limitations in what expresscard/34 can deliver in power, and have been really trying to figure out solutions, as my drive isn't getting sufficient power from my current card, especially if both usb 3.0 ports are occupied (even if the other is just a camera SD card, the HDD will just 'click').
I've looked at different adapters, and Sonnet seems to make a pretty decent one that has two ports, and can be powered by a wall adapter is purchased from a third-party like OWC. This, however, would still leave me in a situation where I would always be reliant upon electricity, detracting a lot from the portability factor. It is also limited to pretty much only storage devices, and doesn't support USB 3.0 hubs
CalDigit makes an adapter as well that seems to be well received, but it cannot be externally powered from what I can tell… so I assume it would not provide enough power to the drives?
One option I have thought of is to get a USB 3.0 y-adapter, and plug the extra "power" USB plug into the adjacent USB 2.0 port.
Would this work, and likely provide enough power?  Or would the speed be throttled down to 2.0 speeds?
Another option seems to be the CalDigit Thunderbolt hub, which, while expensive… seems to provide a great deal of value. However, that would really limit my portability and effectively limit my USB 3.0 usage to home, or wherever I drag the box around with me to.
Do any of these seem like they might work, or are there any other options I am not thinking of?
It seems like the only way I will have true USB 3.0 functionality is either the CalDigit Thunderbolt hub, or parting with this particular mac (which I'd hate to do). The other thing I would possibly like to expand to is a Blackmagic Intensity module ... which come in USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt ... with the USB 3.0 a bit cheaper (and not requiring a cable...) -- I would never be able to use that with the Expresscard/34 adapters, it seems.
I apologize for this being long, but am hoping I am giving enough information for my question to receive some feedback.
    Thank you!
    John

As a (likely) final update to this thread, after talking to CalDigit one last time, this product is no longer being produced by them, and one of the only vendors left for it seems to be OWC.
The card does not come with the USB "ac adapter"-type cable to add the extra needed power for bus-powered storage devices, and is not available through them, either. The CalDigit tech support rep recommended a regular USB 3.0 y-cable.
When I inquired about driver updates, the gentleman said it will likely continue to be covered for approximately 2 more OS system updates (typically 1.5 years each, so 3 years, according to him). He said that, as I have read, that it is indeed possible that the driver is more unstable under Mavericks.
At this point it seems there is no sure-shot solution based on expresscard/34. This is a huge pitfall, as everything else with my older macbook pro is wonderful (and upgradeable).
Anyway, just wanted to give that final update, as it varies significantly from what I was hoping for in my last post. I suppose I could "try" it, but OWC has a 15% restocking fee, along with having to pay return shipping...both of which I confirmed I would have to pay with OWC. I am not willing to do that, as that comes out to almost $20 just to return the product if it doesn't work correctly. Shame, as I would like to give it a fair try, at least, but they don't seem to be willing to budge, and after getting burned on bad products from the past (from other sites with restocking fees), I am no longer willing to go along with those business practices.
    Good luck, everyone.

  • Bus powered external DVD burners risky?

I am thinking of putting a second HD in my 1.83 MBP with the Maxupgrades kit , and getting an external DVD writer.
Years ago I had a firewire bus powered Formac DVD writer, which took too much current out of my Ti powerbook and burnt the internal firewire bus.
Are the modern generation of portable bus powered (USB2 and FW) such safe in this respect?
I see that offering includes an internal battery. Why would they do that if the no-battery ones are OK?
    Thanks for any input.

so the battery is not there to prevent overload of the USB port,
I doubt it, though having a functioning battery may do so
but so that the device can be used independently (from computer)
Perhaps the drive could power headphones so you could listen to music, but the battery is there to provide additional life when you aren't plugged in. If your MBP normally gets 4 hours of life from a full charge, add that bus powered burner and it will drop - bigtime I'd expect. The extra battery in the device gives you a bit longer life.

  • Portable footage in FCP

Hi - I've got about 5hrs of footage that I've digitised at DV quality in FCP. That translates to about 67Gb of files. It's currently on a 2TB RAID0 7200rpm drive, which is great, but big and heavy, and runs off mains power. So not very portable.
Does anyone know if it's possible to transfer the footage to a portable (bus-powered) hard drive so that FCP recognises it as soon as I plug it in? Or do I have to fool it by naming the new drive with the same name as my bigger drive?
I have a 250Gb drive in an FW400 enclosure, but would it be better to put it in a FW800 enclosure? And if so, can anyone recommend a reliable one to buy?
And does this plan seem sensible?
    I'm running FCP 7.0.2...
    Many thanks,
    Oliver.

that's the easiest thing to do but once you relink one file, FCP should find them all. You can also use Media Manager to create a complete copy of everything onto the new drive. That project copy will open instantly. However, you must perform some tests on reduced sized projects with non-critical files to make sure you understand what you're doing.

You're on your own there. Form factor, color of case, brand, cost; all decisions only you can make.

Portable drives suck battery like crazy. If you're trying to run this off a MacBook, you're asking for all kinds of inconvenience.

  • [Solved] Well-supported and powerful video card?

I'm sick of dealing with Catalyst updates breaking my system and crashing Starcraft 2, so I'm thinking I'll buy a new card for my rig. I want to get something that'll work better and make my life easier.
So I'm looking for a desktop (PCI-e) video card, probably nVidia, that can replace my current Radeon HD 5770. I'd like something relatively quiet and not too power-greedy (this PC is right next to my bed and on 24/7) but powerful enough to support my two monitors, play back 1080P h.264 easily, and do some occasional gaming, the most extreme of which would be SC2 in WINE (I don't need to max out the settings, but a good framerate with more-than-minimum settings would be nice.)
My price range is flexible. Maybe around $200, preferably less, but I'd spend a bit more if it's justified.
So: what are you guys using that's working well for you? Anyone have any recommendations on what card to buy?
EDIT: I ended up getting a GTX 460. It's everything I wanted - quiet, powerful, good driver support. Well, I haven't confirmed yet that Starcraft 2 runs without crashing (as it had a habit of doing under my 5770) but at least it runs unlike under the most recent ATI drivers.

My card (the aforementioned GTX 460) arrived. I installed it today with no hitches. Everything worked great except it took me a couple tries to get Starcraft 2 to run (it initially crashed because it couldn't resize my Twinview desktop). I fixed it by creating a Metamode in the nvidia-settings utility where I turned my secondary monitor to "Off". Just switch metamodes, open SC2, and switch metamodes again when done. I may come up with an even simpler solution eventually, but in general, I'm super-happy with how effortless it was getting everything installed, set up, and configured.
And as to the comments on the size of the card - this card is not small at 9.5" or something, but that's comparable to the 5770 I had before and like I said, my case is HUGE. I had like 6 inches to spare behind the card. XD That said, people with ordinary cases probably should measure.

  • Migrate to Windows 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1 using database portability

Hi, I'm planning to migrate from Exchange 2013 SP1 running on Windows 2012 to Exchange 2013 SP1 on Windows 2012 R2.
Is it possible to use database portability to move the databases from the exchange installation on win 2012 to the new installation on Win 2012 R2? This would save a great deal of time not doing the mailbox moves.
I've searched similar cases but couldn't find any, all speak about disaster recovery and database portability but I've found no articles that uses the migration scenario.
Would it be possible to do and if so, what would the steps be? Do I need to delete the database from the source server, move the database files to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes? Or should I dismount the database on the source server,
move them to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes?
    Frank.

    Hi,
According to your description, I recommend you consider using DAG to achieve your requirement.
The following steps for your reference:
1.Prepare a new server which installed windows 2012 R2 for Exchange 2013 mailbox server.
2.After you deploy Exchange 2013 Mailbox servers, you can create a DAG, add Mailbox servers to the DAG, and then replicate mailbox databases between the DAG members.
3.After replication, you can mount all the databases on the new server.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.
