Portable Capture Drives recommendations

Can anyone recommend a portable video capture drive that gives you DV files optimized for FCP? I bought a QuickStream DV and it doesn't seem to be the best choice.

Portable external drive recommendations

I'd like to use a portable external drive to store my referenced masters (about 15k jpeg images and growing), which I would back-up periodically to a 1 TB LaCie drive. Other than getting a drive with FW800 (compatible with my MacBook Pro), should drive speed (5400 vs. 7200) be a consideration? I've noticed that 7200 rpm drives generally max out at 500 GB (and are generally more expensive), but I'd like to get a 1 TB drive. Any recommendations or suggestions?
Also, any suggestions for backing-up referenced masters from one external drive to another (frequency, approach, tools/software)?

Plenty of 7200 rpm choices available including 1-TB size, and yes I consider 7200 rpm worthwhile. I recommend drives that allow FW800, eSATA and USB for flexibility. Slow USB-only drives for backup only can save a few bucks, but drives are cheap and I like to be able to repurpose drives instantly if the need arises so I pay extra to maintain multiple connectivity choices.
As to backup, I feel strongly that originals should be backed up before import into Aperture or any other app. Frequency of offsite backup depends on how important the image data is to you. Personally I do not erase CFs until the originals are both on the hard drive they will live on and backed up to an offsite drive (which can be as simple as a drive that lives in the car). The point is that one theft or one fire or one whatever cannot forever lose enterprise-critical photos.

I have the smaller 2gb at the moment but will be upgrading to a larger one soon. You won't be disappointed with this key. They both have caps but mine came with a lanyard and also a bonus usb extension cable. I can not say for sure if the newer ones do or not.

Portable hard drive recommendations for delivering raw footage for both Mac and PC?

Hello all. I recently purchased a hard drive ("my passport") that I thought would work for delivering raw footage, but turns out my client can't use it on their PC. I did read something in the manual about using with both - but you had to format the drive as FAT32 which comes with a file limitation of 4GB and so will not work for raw footage. Are there any reasonably priced drives that will work for transferring large files between operating systems without reformatting?

You essentially have two options:
Option 1 - format the drive as NTFS then install this free utility on your Mac so it will read/write to NTFS formatted disk: http://download.cnet.com/NTFS-3G/3000-2094_4-10913782.html?tag=vtredir
Option 2: Purchase and install "MacDrive" on the Windows system and format the drive as Mac OS Extended" (aka HFS+). MacDrive will allow the Windows system to read/write to disks formatted for Macs.

Recommendations needed for portable hard drives

Looking for a recommendation for portable hard drives -
1. I'm buying a new 2TB portable hard drive to use with my iMac for my Time Machine backups.
2. Additionally, I am buying a second 2TB portable HD for the iMac for SuperDuper back ups (I'm adding a second layer of back up and bootable clone protection to my life).
3. Finally, I need to also purchase a 1TB portable HD for SuperDuper back ups for my MacBook Air.
I'd just as soon keep life simple and buy the same brand for all 3 drives. I want things easy.
(I have Mavericks on both computers and don't want to worry about Western Digital software inadvertently being installed without my knowing it, possible causing me to lose data on my computers. So maybe it would be simplest all around to avoid WD?)
Simple and easy and reliable - that's all I ask.

Any external USB type DVD drive will work. I use one that came out of a Dell notebook on my Mac. You just have to make sure you get one that can connect to both USB ports at the same time, IE has a Y USB cable, in case connecting to just one USB port does not supply enough power to the drive.

How do I make a backup recovery using my portable usb drive?

I have an 8gb usb flash drive, and I tried to backup my system onto it, and couldn't. It said "Please insert a usb flash greater than 7.6gb". So I inserted another portable usb drive that had over 180gb of free space, and it still keeps repeating the same message even though the drive clearly has more than 7.6gb on it, it has 180gb. So how do I correct the problem so that I can backup my recovery system? My laptop is brand new, I just bought it a few days ago, I haven't even had it a week. Here is the computer stats

Duplicating your post on the same Category won't help you much and it makes it difficult by
keeping track.
The problem you are having is related to the fact that your USB Drive format is FAT or FAT 32.
This type of format doesn't allow for a single file to be greater than 2GB and 4GB respectively,
and the single backup file you are trying to copy is greater than that so it doesn't allow it.
What you can do is format your USB Drive to be NTFS, which has no limit on what size a file can be
except the size of capacity the USB can store, but I'm not sure that's a good idea because of
the disadvantages of the format.
Also you can burn it to DVD's, which is recommended, or buy an external Hard Drive.
When you insert the USB go to My Computer and left click on the USB icon and go to properties
and there you will see what format it is.

Finding RAW files on Portable Hard Drive

I've just bought a Portable Hard Drive for storing my RAW files. (LR recommended good practice, keeping 50% of my C drive empty!!)
Now...I am able to download from my Memory Card to the Portable Drive and tell LR where to find the images. - That's dandy!.
I can even move a small number (e.g. 6) RAW files from the C drive to the portable drive. The thumbnail then gets a "?" and when selected, tells me it cant find the (RAW) file and asks me where it is. I can do that since I moved them to a portable drive folder that I set up - That's fine too
What I don't know is how to move 3,000+ RAW files in (e.g.) 75 folders from the C drive to the portable drive without having to tell LR where EVERY one of them is.
LR help says
To locate missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library > Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.
But if I understand this correctly it is simply showing me that there are missing photos (not where they ought to be)
More helpfully, LR help also says
3(Optional) In the Locate dialog box, select Find Nearby Missing Photos to have Lightroom search for other missing photos in the folder and reconnect them automatically.
Does this mean I need to specifically describe the location of ONE from each folder then let LR find NEARBY Missing RAW files?
This might be a daft question, but do I need to set up my portable HD directory structure to be the same as my C drive to automate the synchronize??

I have the same problem in reverse. I have always had my original files on my external drive (and it just saved me in a crash last month. However now I -have copied- all my files to E: (an internal drive on my new computer), so I am 'missing' all my files. I understand the concept above about creating a master folder in LR2, and then does tha mean that you can locate one file in the master, and ask for all missing near that one and that it -will- go down to all subfolders? Lastly, how do I (we) get there from here? On my hard drive, I do have a master folder. It is E:\PictureFolder. Everything I own is under that one, in their own major subject folders (01FamilyMiller, 02FamilySharp, etc.). Under those are yyyymmdd_<shootname> folders with the actual files. In LR2, I have imported the <shootname> folder only, so LR has 20080101_NewYearsAtLeslies, 20080430_VermontTrip, etc., e.g. strictly chronological, even though they are in separate category folders on the hard drive. Maybe now is the time to put major subject area and personal vs. professional master folders on LR2. Before I do any changes to folder structure in LR2, how do I get my hard drive folders connected to the ones in LR2, en masse? Do I just create PictureFolder in LR2 and then move all the "?", chronological LR folders under it??

USB powered hard drive recommendation?

I am having trouble finding an external removable hard drive that can be powered through my USB.
I bought one a Western Digital 120g portable drive - it won't even show up or eject unless it's plugged in with a cord I swiped from another device.
After reading the posts, it seems this is a problem. Any recommendations for brands/sizes that don't require a power source?

I would be willing to use whatever one works - I am not as savvy on my machine as I once was so I appreciate ANY pointers.
I am trying to keep some photos/video on an external, portable, self-powered hard drive. I don't need to boot it up, just access it as additional storage.
I do have a firewire port. I didn't know if that would have difficulty powering a device the same way my USB port is limited in powering - so any tips for an external, portable hard drive that is powered through the laptop, either via USB or Firewire, would be appreciated.
Let me know if I'm asking the wrong question or need to go a different direction.

Need help - downloading photos to portable hard drive

I've imported about 2000 photos from my iPhone to my Macbook Air. I want to export them now to a portable hard drive but it's saying I don't have enough memory. I was planning on deleting the photos on the MacAir afterwards anyway.
Two questions:
1.) How do I move these photos to my portable hard drive, so I can then delete them on the hard drive?
2.) How do I bypass downloading to the MacAir next time, and move photos right from iPhone to portable hard drive?
I'm tech savvy on all things Windows, and have had Macs in the past, so I'm ready to pull my hair out over these novice questions.

Have your recipients given you any more info than you've given us? The simplest thing for you to do is to capture your footage, get it in a timeline, then export as a QuickTime movie, which should be around 9 or 10 GB in size. Your PC friend would need to download QuickTime in order to view it.
There are tools available to convert to Windows Media or other formats. One of the best is MPEG Streamclip, which you can download here:

You'll need to be certain to format the hard drives properly (do this in Disk Utility): Mac OS Extended for your Mac friend, MS-DOS for your PC friend. There are issues with some PC drives and files over 2GB, so you may need to break your QuickTime movie into 9-minute segments.

WDM Capture Driver: Device Cannot Start (Error 10)

I have GeForce3 Ti200 with S-Video In, Out and TV out. I'm trying to run Virtual Dub to view my PS2, which is going into the S-Video In. It said I needed capture drivers, so I went to http://www.nvidia.com, got the ones that come with the Personal Cinema thing and installed them. Those didn't work. Came here and tried the drivers here, those didn't work. Tried other drivers and those didn't work. They all said "Device cannot start (Code 10)"
I've tried 1.1.6, 1.1.7 and 1.1.9. Any ideas? I've searched on google and seen some stuff about turning off ACPI but I use ACPI, so I'm not willing to do that.

God I love forums, cause 99.9% of the time someone else has encountered the same problem and then hopefully someone else who found a fix, posts that fix.

Much thanks to Nixus, and everyone who had solutions, but I found a variation of Nixus' solution was what worked for me so that's what I'll recommend.
"I downloaded the bios files from http://tw.msi.com.tw/autobios/SVga/Bios/Ms8850/v111/ and then downloaded NVFLASH.EXE and booted in dos and flashed the card i had to force the flash though it had some conflict of data or something but i knew it was the right bios and i had made a backup of the current one plust the card has dual bios so i wasnt too worried and it all worked out fine.

This is what I did anyway:
1) went to http://www.msi.com.tw and dragged the mouse over 'support' and then clicked on live updates 2. Installed this program.
2) went to http://tw.msi.com.tw/autobios/SVga/Bios/Ms8850/v111/
which Nixus brought up,
and clicked on the install button. Which installed some other software to make this button work, then installed the flashing program. Held my breathe while it updated the vga bios, normally I'd do this from a clean dos 5.0 boot disk I have, and voila, problem fixed.
Well, not quite. After installing updated vga bios, all nvidia drivers were zapped. Or at least not installed right.
3) Add/remove programs, uninstall nvidia wdm drivers and vga driver for the 1 billionth time. Reboot.
4) Install 30.82 whql certified ones, rebooted.
5) Install wdm 1.19 drivers, reboot
6) Go into system, and now instead of the exclamation point alongside the nvidia capture driver with that error, it just shows as working. Tried virtual dub, btw program rocks except for that 2 gig file limitation, and changed the source to composite and bingo, video in again.
So long story short, I updated my 8850 to the updated bios, uninstalled all old nvidia drivers, installed 30.82 and then wdm 1.19 and it worky again. Haven't tried it with det4 drivers yet, didn't feel like pressing my luck.
If you search in this vga forum using the word "capture" without the quotes, it seems this problem with the 8850 and others is QUITE common :(
Whatever...updated bios fixed it for me...fine...so long as it's fixed. Bad enough I gotta boot into 98se to use my old large, legal sized mustek scanner on account of no win2k/xp drivers, don't want to have to boot into 98crash_edition ( well technically all 95-me could be called that ) everytime I want to cap something.

Portable Hard Drive Needed

I seem to be out of the office more and more and I need to have my files with me. I have a Mac G4 and have been researching portable hard drives, the only thing is, not many of the reviewers consider the older macs.
PC Magazine did recommend a portable drive for "older mac users" but I thought that I would ask the experts before I make a purchase.

Is this the one that your son has? It looks like it gets good reviews and the fact that the company stands by their products is a big plus.
The OWC drive I pointed to is the same one my son uses. He's had it about a year with no issues. I like the fact that it's got a 3 year warranty, while others are sometimes 1 year. I have several desktop external drives that use the Oxford chipsets, and others would agree they interface very well to our macs.
The other benefit to firewire is if you either copy your system to the hard drive, to make a backup of your internal drive, or just install an operating system on it, you have the capability to boot and use your system if there is any problem with the internal hard drive. You can even partition the external drive into one partition with an operating system/backup and the second partition with business data. If you think this approach would be one you might use, take that into account when you decide what size external drive to get, ie, get a larger one than you might normally go with just for data.
Also, on an external hard drive whose purpose is primarily data storage, I probably wouldn't spend the extra on a 7200rpm drive, instead going with a 5400rpm drive (which is probably the speed of what's in your Powerbook). So ... if you have an 80GB internal hard drive today, round it to 100GB for backup, then add 300GB? for business data ... maybe a 400GB or even 500GB external hard drive would work for you. It would be a backup for your internal drive as well as hold your business data. Just a thought ....

7200 or 5400 portable hard drive for scratch drive?

I am trying to decide whether to buy a f7200rpm or 5400rpm portable hard drive to store some of my video footage on but seem to have conflicting answers on the topic. Basically, I need to offload some of my unedited footage from my MBP as it is taking up lots of room but I need also to have this with me when travelling so that I can continue working on it, therefore the need for a small portable hard drive. I have pretty much decided to get one of the G-tech mini drives, but should I get a faster 7200rpm for video, or will this make no difference, in which case a 5400rpm will have more capacity for the same price. I emailed G-Tech and their reply was a bit vague, basically saying that with firewire 800 there "might be a slight increase in performance", but I am still not sure what this means in real terms when working with video.
I thought the best place to ask was here, so if anyone can advise I would be grateful, thanks.

I have a single G-Tech mini fw400 case with a 5400 rpm drive that is perfectly useful for capturing and editing simple DV. But, I purchased it for simply capturing video while I was out of the studio. I would not use it for serious multi layer editing. If pressed, I would guess the limits have more to do with it being fw400 than the rotational speed.
What a faster rotational speed often does is give you faster seek times.
Still, if I were in the market today, I'd go with something like a two drive miniRAID system (eg Caldigit VRmini) that can connect via FW400, 800 or eSATA.

Portable hard drive suggestions on how to set it up.

Hey guys! I have a question and I'm looking for some advice. I got a portable hard drive for Christmas and since I'm not sure how to set it up I was wondering if I can get some help from you guys on how to set it up according to my needs.
The portable hard drive is 320GB and what I want to do is set it up for time machine to back up my MacBook, and also be able to read and write on the portable hard drive using a PC, Mac, and my PS3.
I'm assuming I would need to format it into Fat32 so my macbook can write to the hard drive? Also from my understanding PS3's can only detect fat32? So would you guys recommend me formatting it into fat32 and how would I go about doing that? Plus do you guys have any other suggestions? I wish I could use the portable hard drive for boot camp but maybe I'll just transfer my iTunes library on the hard drive and sacrifice my MacBooks HD space for boot camp? Thanks! And happy new years

No idea about PS3.
TM needs a Mac OS extended Journaled format which cannot be seen by Win.
I would leave a Disc only to TM which is a complicated but serious easy and affordable backup.
Fat 32 could be OK to transfer files between Mac And Win systems but you will need to copy files manually to it. More.. Fat system is not so safe and stable as MacOS.
Teoretically you could partition your drive with Disc Utility into 2 Discs and use one for TM and the other for rest. I am not 100% sure if you can do it (I mean use TM on one of the Partition Formatted as MAC OS Jour) but you can try. As I wrote I would not do it.
