Portable drive no longer recognized

Hello.
I have an HP PD1000a drive that is no longer recognized by my HP 9040n (Windows 7 Ultimate) computer.  This happened overnight.  The drive can be recognized and the driver installed by another computer (HP laptop running W7 Ultimate).
When I plug the drive into the 9040, it is seen in the device panel but is disabled.  When I try to enable the drive, Windows 7 is unable to do so.
Can you offer any assistance?
Lt. Touchdown

I have a similar problem. Apparently (for no understandable reason), it no longer works via a USB2.0 port, however if you have a USB3.0 port it will work via that. All attempts to contact HP to see if there is a fix have failed. They must be about the most disorganised, uncaring business in the world!

  • After security patch 03/04/2014 OSX 10.7.5, first one, then a second, external backup drive no longer recognized.  Diagnostics for the FireWire one displays brand name of unit, but Time Machine and its own app don't see it.  Where do I start?

Yesterday I installed the security patch, OSX 10.7.5 to my IMac that is about 2 years old.
Today my Seagate BackupPlus for Mac will power on but is not recognized.  It does not show up as a device, Time Machine says the latest backup was DELAYED, last successful at 03/04/2014 9:35 PM (yesterday) and next backup would begin when the disk was connected.  An error message I did not save said basically the drive was not recognized.   I did all drive's  troubleshooting steps, including installing a newer version of their app.  I tried swapping USB for FireWire, changing electrical outlets, etc.
It seems a bit coincidental to have 2 drives "fail" simultaneously.  Is anyone else having this issue after this security patch?  What would be the approach from the Mac side?  TIA for any assistance.
Please see below regarding the second drive.  Is this a red herring, or does it help pinpoint where the failure might lie?
I also have a Seagate GoFlex that WAS recognized until I did the troubleshooting on the other drive.  When I put it back on after testing the other drive with FireWire, it now is no longer recognized.
    Diagnostics says this about that:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
    GoFlex Mac:
      Manufacturer:          Seagate
      Model:          0x6090
      GUID:          0x2037600121908F
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac Unit:
      Unit Software Version:          0x10483
      Unit Spec ID:          0x609E
      Firmware Revision:          0x111
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac SBP-LUN:
Thirdly, in after one of the testing/reboot loops, the HP WiFi printer was no longer recognized, but after a few more it came back.

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?

  • 2 TB External Drive no Longer Recognized by iMac 27"

I have a 2 TB external HD (actually two 1 TB drives housed together in a OQC Mercury Elite Case) that has been working flawlessly for about 10 months as my Time Machine backup to the iMac 27". I have it hooked via FW800.
Yesterday I noticed that TM backup failed and when playing around, I also noticed that the drive was no longer recognized. I check System Profiler and the drive was not seen. I did a PRAM reset (as this usually fixed the FW800 issues), but still no drive.
Thinking I had a faulty FW800 port on the iMac, I switched the connection to USB 2. I see the Drive listed in the USB Device Tree in System Profiler, but still nothing on Finder.
I opened Disk Utliltiy and I see a listing for a "2 TB External Raid Media" and then as a indent is says "Disk 3s3", but this is grayed out and you can not click on it to, say, repair permissions.
I installed an update late Friday night and I have no idea if this is the reason, but I am curious what the next step might be. I am using 10.6.4.

    James,
There are some basics you can do to do trouble shoot the FW800 problem. First is doing a SMC reset, follow the instructions for Intel based iMacs. This letter covers multiple models of Macs and you need to follow the correct procedure.
The next item to try would be resetting the PRAM.
Finally The X Lab has written a good article on troubleshooting Firewire devices. You can locate that article here.
    Hope this helps out some.
    Regards,
    Roger

I just updated Cisco software and my external hard drive is no longer recognized by Cisco.  It is a Seagate drive that is listed on the Cisco tested - passed - approved list.  It worked prior to this update.  I have disconnected the drive.  Reconnected it.  Rebooted.  Turned machine and router on and off and its still not recognized.  Any ideas?  Thank you, Jim S.

  • Firewire drive no longer recognized after upgrade?

having an onset of problems the last 2 weeks.
first upgraded to 10.4.6 on mac mini 1.42 non-duo, worked a few days than acted weird with apps crashing. had to reinstall from 10.4 disk. seemed ok. repaired permissions, ect. after reinstall (and a subsequent power outage) a firewire drive attached at time was no longer recognized by mac mini or connected imacG3. reinstalled 10.4.2 on mac mini. installer unable to reinstall 10.4.6., I would like to have firewire drive recognized again. when attached to other firewire drive in daisy chain, says device unrecognized, other wise unable to get any info on drive. what to do?

I am having nearly the exact same issue as you are experiencing. My Western Digital Dual-Option Media Center 160 GB FW HD is going in and out big time. It seems to be there for a time but then conks out. I have to disconnect the power and now the drive seems to be malfunctioning.
Same story with my LaCie 52x CD Burner. I placed the Disk Warrior CD in there and the computer recognized the disc at first but then spinning beach balls galore!
This has to be one of the worst updates to an OS X system I can remember. I can only think PowerPC QA testing has gone through the toilet since the Intel move was completed.

    Hi,
The driver is in the operating system so you shouldn't need any. Can you see the optical drive in the Device Manager??

  • Optical Drive No Longer Recognized-- Yosemite, Mac

Like a fool, I updated to Yosemite. Now my external optical drive is no longer recognized and I can't burn a CD in iTunes. Please help! How can I get my computer to recognize my optical drive and burn a disc? I have a Mac Air.

    Hi,
How is your optical drive connected? It may be a connection problem.
When you go to About this Mac, Overview, System Report, Disc Burning, what does it show?
Does the device show in the Finder window sidebar or in Disk Utility?

  • LaCie External Drive No Longer Recognized

My LaCie d2 Hard Drive (Extreme) suddenly is no longer recognized. This may or may not have anything to do with my copying several files to it just prior, with much memory still available on it. I rebooted my computer twice and it was still not there. Is this a crash? Should I kiss that drive goodbye? If not, any suggestions?

Bizarre. After some time it now appears, and apparently with all files on it. I thought the cable was already secure on both ends, but perhaps it appeared after tightening them just slightly. Do you think that was it?

  • Wolverine portable hardrive no longer recognized

    Hi there,
I have a brand new Wolverine 40gb flash pac which I had been using for a week with out problems. Straight out of the box - plug and play.
But all of a sudden tonight when I connect the pac to my MacBook Pro with the usb cable, the drive icon doesn't show up on the desktop. I tried conecting to the usb port on the other side of the Mac, used a different usb cable, pushed the reset button on the flash pac, but nothing seems to make it work EXCEPT if I shut down the Mac and restart. I can then plug in the flash pac and the icon showed up once on my desktop, but if I turn it off and try to restart the flash pac, the icon fails to appear. What gives!!
I also noticed that my other usb card-reader also no longer is recognized by the Mac. Coincidence? I don't think so. The only thing I did differently tonight is transfer images from a brand-new 2gb SD card onto the flash pac. Problems occured immediately after this transfer. Could the SD card have been "defective" and be the source of my woes?
My laptop fan runs on the usb port, so I believe the port has juice.
    THANKS!!

I'm answering my own question, but hope it may be of some help to others who find themselves in the same situation with an intermittent mounting external harddrive.
After resetting SMU, repairing permissions, and still having problems mounting my portable wolverine, I went to the Apple Store, explained the issue and left the laptop there after the Genius on duty tried a few things unsuccessfully.
A few hours later I got a call from another Genius who figured out what was going on. Apparently for some reason my MacBook was "confused" and still thought it was mounted to the Wolverine harddrive even if the usb cable was disconnected.
The Genius said all he did to fix it was to "clear out the cache". And now the Wolverine works flawlessly again, and the wolverine icon appears on the desk top when I attach the usb cord. The genius suggested that I might have forgotten to drag the drive icon into the trash that night before yanking the cord.
Anyway, here is a brief instruction on how to fix this problem:
Go menu - go to folder - type: /volumes - drag the "alias volverine" volume to the trash.
And that's it! Works like a charm now. Thank you Apple Store and Genius Bar!! Great job!

  • SATA Hard Drive no longer recognized by Mega 865

I recently put together an MSI Mega 865 barebone system with the following specifications:
Processor: Intel 3.2c Ghz (Northwood core)
Hard Drive:  Western Digital SATA 10kRPM Raptor
    Memory: 1 GB (2 x 512MB) Kingston 3200 (400Mhz)
DVD Player: Plextor 8X DVD RW
Video Card:  HIS Excalibure 9800Pro 128 MB
    OS:  WinXP
Finally got everything up and running, and then I went to boot up, and the system can no longer find the SATA harddrive.  In fact, it's not even an option in the BIOS now.
    My question is the following:
Would the SATA be available all of the time, or only if a SATA enabled harddrive was recognized?
When the system is first powered on by plugging the power cord into the wall, the hard drive makes a small amount of noise, as if it's spinning a bit.  When the computer starts up, there is no noise at all, although the hard drive does get warm (which makes me think there is power to the unit).
I tried the 2nd power supply (old IDE) for the hard drive, but that provided that same results as the SATA power supply.
There were some inconsistencies with my mega 865 prior to this.  First, the HIFI would randomly lock up, and the only way to get it back was to unplug the computer from the wall.  2nd, it had lost communication on the serial port (why, I don't know).  3rd, and final, it doesn't seem to recognize my hard drive (or my hard drive is ruined).
Can someone help me out here, I'm not sure whether to return my HardDrive, my MSI Mega 865, or both.

The system worked for 4 days or so.  One day, I started it up, and it couldn't boot because it couldn't detect the SATA drive.  When this happened I decided to flash it to the the latest BIOS, but even this did not help.
The unit had problems before, it would lock up on initial power up, the HIFI/CD/DVD would not respond (when the computer was not on of course).  I would have to plug and unplug the unit 3 or 4 times before it would power on and not lock up.
I contacted MSI support, and explained my problems.  They told me to return the unit to the reseller.  I'm not sure if the problem was the unit, the hard drive, or both, so I went ahead and returned the HD and the MSI unit.  It'll be another 2 weeks or so now before I get my computer up and running.  :(

  • External Drive No Longer Recognized

I have a DiskGo Edge 500GB external hard drive that will no longer mount on my computer. It was dropped from about two feet, and no longer pops up on my desktop. Originally, when I launched Disk Utility, it would appear on the sidebar, but after about five minutes it failed to show up. I booted into a Leopard Install DVD and ran Disk Utility form there, and it appeared there, but still would not show up when logged in. Running the Data Rescue 3 program was no help, as it didn't even appear as a drive to repair.
The drive still emits a soft hum when connected, and there are no visible signs of wear. Any ideas?

All of a sudden it is now being recognized by Disk Utility again. However, if I click on it, I just get the rainbow wheel.
Terminal displays it through diskutil list, and this is the information when I type diskutil info /dev/disk2:

  • Seagate portable drive not being recognized after OSX10.9.2

After I installed the 9.2 update, my Seagate portable external drive is not being recognized - doesnt show up in Finder, or Disk Utility, but I know the drive is live, as I can feel it vibrating
Someone please help, all my time machine backup is on that

I had the same issue - the Seagate drive is in a format that will recognize both Windows and Mac formats and there seems to be a flaw with Seagate.  After working on this for five hours and finally calling Apple, I found out why.  If you reformat to Mac OS extended journaled then they usually start working properly.
When I contacted Seagate they said it was best if you are just using a mac to just use the Mac formatting.
Hope this helps and good luck.  Hope there wasn't any valuable data on the drive.

  • Hard Drive no longer recognized. Input Output Error.

Recently my iBook G4 1.0 Ghz, has stopped recognizing my hard drive.
I have taken the hard drive out of the computer, erased it 35 times and reinstalled OSX 10.4 with all the updates. The hard drive runs very smooth. No clicks or problems associated with bad hard drives. This is a new hard drive from Toshiba 5400 80gig.
After runner the hard drive utility program from OSX several times (about 30) no errors. Also after running fsck about 14 times, not errors where found.
Everything appeared to be fine after installing the hard drive once again into my iBook. About 3 days later though, the same problem.
Hard drive Utility says the Tree is dead and BSD is for the cats. Can't repair anything. The computer has ceased to work and I have no desire to take the hard drive out for a third time before I know what might be wrong with it.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thank you kindly.

Thank you Jon for your reply.
I forgot to mention that I am actually in the process of becoming a certified apple portable hardware technician. Just started going through the training program.
I've taken many Apple computers apart and replaced most everything in them. I had to replace my original hard drive from Apple a few months ago after it was having serious problems.
I am familiar with DiskWarrior and such programs. But that's just the thing. The Hard drive is coming back with no errors and is working fine when attached to the iBook externally via Firewire.
I was thinking it has something to do with the logic board. But being I am not quite that advanced in my tech training I am unable to answer the problem on my own.

  • Optical drive no longer recognized by Leopard

    Hello everyone,
Over the last few months, I started getting MEDIUM errors while burning cdrs with Toast Titanium. Burning DVD's was never a problem. I even tried using several different brands of cdrs to no avail.
My Macbook Pro is out of warranty, so I decided to hit the web for a solution. My next option was just to buy a new superdrive. I found a site that gave instructions for opening up the computer, opening up the superdrive case, and cleaning the lens with an alcohol solution. I was desperate.
My Leopard OS will not recognize a drive at all now. If I put a cd in, it will spin up, but the OS won't load any data off of it. I couldn't even eject the disc, so I had to open the computer up again. My question is, would the alcohol solution (small amount on qtip), cause a drive to not be recognized by the OS? I connected the cable properly, secure, so I know its not that. Anything else i can try before I buy a new drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello
Would appreciate if the original poster could give us an update.
My MBP would randomly not read or mount certain diska. Earlier this evening I decide to upgrade my HD so I decide while the case was open to remove and open superdrive and clean the lens with alcohol. Drive spins up but System Profiler does not find the ATA device now (optical cable fully attached, and have experience with these systems). Just ordered a replacement drive, but looking for some reassurance

  • Time machine (hard drive) no longer recognized

Took note that the Time Machine was no-longer backing up onto my iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive (last backup states 8/18/11).  This was noted when I was attempting to recall an Excel worksheet; alerted that the worksheet I most-frequently use could no-longer be read.  When attempting a (Time Machine) backup retrieval it was realized that the system had not performed a backup since the above date; now the system doesn't even "see" it (backup drive)???
    Can you help?

BUMP! Count me in on this one. The last Time Machine back-up was 12/6. I take my machine to the office during the week but am working from home this week. My other external drive (Archives) shows up, but Time Machine is MIA. Looking at System Profiler under USB, I can see the drive on the USB hub and the volume is labeled Time Machine, so the computer sees it, it just doesn't mount it to the desktop so Time Machine can't find its drive.
I've turned the drive off and on. I've swapped cables with the Archive drive. I've rebooted. Nothing works. Both are Western Digital MyBook Studio editions. Both are plugged in to the same hub. I also switched the cables on the hub, but if it's showing up in the Profiler, the problem isn't with the hub, the drive or the cable.
Suggestions? Clues? Comments? I'd rather not lose a year's worth of Time Machine back-ups at this point, plus I can't even reformat the drive.
