i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.
If you want more information about Time Machine, read the Pondini's site > http://pondini.org

  • How to save iPhoto file in a separate portable hard disk drive?

How to save iPhoto file in a separate portable hard disk drive?

You want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Portable Hard Disk Drive

    Hi All,
I am in the market to purchase a Portable Hard Disk Drive, as I had purchased an EZQ drive that is now DOA. I am interested in the LaCie Rugged line, but I was looking for more storage space for a good price. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Drew

I am a huge fan of the Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC found HERE. They are very reliable due to their use of the Oxford 911 chipset.
If you are looking for a more portable drive, then take a look at their Mercury On-The-Go drives HERE. They feature the same Oxford chipset and are bus powered, meaning no power adapter is required.

Can anybody have any windows software so that i can copy these files from the corrupted hard disk
Now you have introduced a new element.  Is this external HDD in a Windows format?  If so, I would try to copy the data to another external HDD on a PC.
    Ciao.

  • Cannot open files in portable hard disk using USB 2.0

My friend using a 20G Portable Hard disk and told me that he could not open files on it when he connected it to his iMac G5 with the USB 2.0 cable. He gave it to me and I found the same result with my iMac G5 2.0. I have tried using Disk Utility's repair but found the rainbow ball rolls on and on. Whenever I tried to open any files with Finder, the rainbow ball appears again.
The portable hard disk is fine with PC and my friend said his G4 is alright with it too.
Is the problem due to iMac?

Also, try connecting the drive directly to a USB port on the iMac. The USB ports at the back of the keyboard are convenient but slow, since its built-in hub is USB 1.1. It supplies a total of 500 ma, the same "juice" as other hubs, but the Apple Pro Keyboard uses half of that.
The ports on the iMac itself each supply the standard 500 ma, and are high speed USB 2 ports, so they are the preferred choice.

  • Install 11.5.10 on USB portable hard disk media

can 11.5.10 be installed on a USB portable hard disk connected on a notebook/laptop computer. did any one do this? does it works with out problems?
these are some of the doubts i need to clarify.
any response to this will be appreciated
    thanks

I had a friend that did that. I had to do a media recovery on the database when they lost power. The laptop went to battery, but the external USB drive crashed. Shortly afterward, they compressed their laptop drives and put 11i on the primary internal drive. On a 7200 rpm drive, it will be plenty fast for single user mode, even with compression.

  • How can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

how can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

Import them into iTunes, then sync to your iPad. Movies may need to be converted to an iTunes compatible format. There are any number of utilities for that such as HandBrake 0.9.5.
Please get the iPad iOS 4 user guide.

  • Anyone has a problem with a Samsung M3 1TB portable hard disk in Mountain Lion?

I was using this hard disk in Lion with Time Machine, but a while after the update to Mountain his stop to work.
Anyone has the same problem? I already search in the Samsung/Seagate web site for any problem related, but without any luck.
If this question is in the wrong community, let me now.
    Thanks for any information
    Vinicius Teixeira Coelho
PS: Any English correction just tell me =]

I can no longer even 'see' my Samsung disk in the Disk Utility and I don't know what to do. If I could reformat it and sacrifice the files that I've probably lost that would be ok, as it was my back-up drive. This is frustrating

  • Using ipod as portable hard disk drive

I have an ipod - iphoto - 20GB. altho i have enabled it for disk use, after dragging my files into the 'notes' folder, i am still unable to view the files in the ipod. i can see the title of the file, but when i click on the file to read, i see only 5 incoherent symbols. what does this mean? why cant i see the files in my ipod?

hmm.. haha.. thanks.. the link u provided above is quite useful.. i wish that the text length will be longer. plus, even if i bold or underline the words i dont see it in my ipod..
btw, if i don't "safely remove hardware" for my ipod when i disconnect it from teh com (updating ipod and everything is done - files closed and stuff) will my ipod spoil? i did that a few times cos it often says 'ipod device cannot be disabled now. pls try again later'. then my ipod has problems shutting off. even clicking on the 'sleep' also cannot switch it off. i had to wait until the specific time whereby the ipod will go into sleep mode. what happend?

  • Problem Time Machine with Hard Disk iOmega 750 GB USB Desktop

When time machine try to format the HD on Mac Os Plus format: fail. Time Machine can't format he HD and it disappears. I try to format in disk utilities and only can in MS DOS FAT mode, in Mac Os Plus: fail. Please help me. Thanks.

Just found the solution in a post from Christopher Wolf. (Thanks again, Christopher!)
"If you attach a drive which is greater than 512GB in size and comes pre-formatted using the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme then you will need to re-partition the drive using either the Apple Partition Map or GUID Partition Table partition scheme before it will be usable by Time Machine.
To re-partition the drive, open Disk Utility, select the entire drive, select the Partition tab, select "1 partition", select the "Options" button, and then select either "Apple Partition Map" or "GUID Partition Table", click OK to dismiss the sheet, click "Apply" to repartition the drive. All existing data on the drive will be erased! "

Hi, connecting a new iomega ego portable hard drive to T61 XP pro causes it to bluescreen.  Get the message "...windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".  The drive works on other PCs.  Does anyone have an idea what causes this and what a remedy could be.  Thanks in advance for your help.  Deb

    Hello,
How does the Iomega eGo portable hard disk drive connect to the ThinkPad T61?
If you plug this portable hard disk drive in before you turn the ThinkPad on, does the problem still occur or does Microsoft Windows XP boot as normal?

  • Which portable hard drives to store TimeMachine backups with MBA?

Hi, I am looking forward to purchasing a MBA within a few months. In the menawhile, I am moving around with and old iBook. I need to purchase a portable Hard Disk for backups, but I need to make sure that it will work with MBA to store TimeMachine Backups.
I read some user review in the Apple online store that says that Lacie Rugged Hard Disk does NOT wrk with MacBook Air. I was surprised.
Does anybody know of a portable hard disk that can survive shocks AND works with MBA?
    Would Iomega eGo do?
    Thanks in advance

I'm using a (powered) Gigaware hub from Radioshack. I think my drive is WD Passport essential 250G.
