Portable hard drive clicking but it isn't a hardware problem
Here's what I have so far:
A portable hard drive bought via ebay
A desktop that only runs arch (main computer)
A desktop that only runs ubuntu (guest computer)
The hard drive clicks (about 4 times per second) when plugged into the arch desktop regardless of which usb port/hub it's plugged into.
The hard drive works perfectly when plugged into the ubuntu desktop's usb ports.
The hard drive does not show up on lsusb on the arch desktop.
The hard drive is apple branded but the enclosure/adapter definitely isn't. I don't think this makes a difference.
My main question is: What now?
edit: sifted through some logs for a while and didn't find anything.
I'm thinking that because nothing shows up in lsusb there is a problem recognizing the sata-usb adapter.

Is the drive self powered, or is it powered from the USB bus ?
Is the drive drawing excess current ?? A USB device is not supposed to draw in excess of 100mA unless it negotiates with the host for more. Not all USB controllers respond well to devices that violate this.

Portable hard drive powering, but not showing up in Disk Utility
I just purchased an ADATA portable hard drive and my MacBook Pro powers it but does not recognize it. It is brand new and has not been used on any other machine. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
JustinSome portable drives draw too much power, the Mac might have cut it off or it doesn't have enough power for it.
It might be defective, take it back and buy a quality Hitachi external drive, Western Digital next in quality, preferablly self powered and not a eco-type drive. -

Do you have a compatible OSX installed on this 'storage' HDD? If not, it will not boot your MBP.

I have a MacPro5,1, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2 processors running at 2.4 GHz. I am running OSX 10.6.8. I installed Yosemite on another drive. When I choose Restart in Yosemite it shows my 10.6.8 hard drive. But when I click Restart in 10.6.8 it does NOT show my Yosemite drive. I used to know how to get the startup screen that showed multiple drives but I've forgotten it. How do I do that?
Press Option at startup.

FCP 7.0.3, Canon XF100, saved some clips to a portable hard drive and now they won't import? Tried moving them back to the CompactFlash but still won't import? iMac, 10.6.8
Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
>I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure? Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening. If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work. Do you have the right files? -
How do I delete files from a portable hard drive
I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?
You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item. -
How can I reformat my portable hard drive?
I have a Seagate 1TB portable hard drive, connected by USB to my MacBook Pro.
I use it as my Time Machine.
I have been getting error messages saying the drive is not working.
I have tried to repair it via Disk Utility but get this message:
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
1. How can I repair it and protect the files I have on it?
2. Alternatively, how can I wipe it and start again as a new Time Machine?
Thank youIn Disk Utility select that external drive then click the Partition tab. Then select One partition from the Partition Layout drop down and make sure it is set to a GUID partition table, that is under the Options button, and the format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then Click the Apply Button. If the drive is still good it will be partitions and formatted and then can be used for a TM backup drive.
But I suspect either the drive is failing or the electronics in the drive enclosure are failing. In the first case there isn't much you can do about a failing hard drive except replace it. On the second part if the enclosure electronics are failing then you can take the physical hard drive out that enclosure and connect it to your mac with a SATA to USB adapter or put it in another enclosure.
Then you have the simple fact the Apple Mac notebook computers always seem to have a problem with these USB Bus powered external hard drives. It seems the USB port on Mac notebook don't put out enough power on the USB port to fully power up these type of drives. They do some times but not always. One work around for that is to use a Y USB cable that connect to 2 USB ports at the same time to supply more power to the drive. -
New computer, itunes backed up on portable hard drive, how to transfer?
I have just received a new laptop. I connected my portable hard drive on which i had backed up my itunes library from my old pc. On the new computer i used the "add folder to library" function in itunes. All the songs from my hard drive appear in the iTunes library on my new laptop, but when i try to play the songs, iTunes asks me to locate each individual song file on my portable hard drive. i have tried using the consolidate library function but this hasn't done anything. I don't want to have to "locate file" for each of the thousands of tracks i have stored on my portable hard drive.

Hi all,
I moved all my music from my laptop to a portable hard drive, my hope was that i could just plug and play into my mabook air not the case...
I was wondering if anyone could help with the following, in a perfect world i would love to be able to keep the music on my drive (there is about 500 gb worth) and then when i want to play through mac to apple tv be able to just plug into mac and then be good to go, or if poss for itunes to be able to recognise the music on my portable drive...and for me then to play through itunes without adding it (as there wouldnt be enough space)...and to also have the capability to plug the drive into my windows comp and be able to also still play from there.
I dont know if any of this is poss...it all seems really complicated to me...and i am new to mac.
If anyone thinks they could help please get in touch!
my main goal is to be able to play my music through apple tv to the surround system in the house, and to be able to play music through my mac if poss, doesnt have to be itunes so long as i can air play or even better select through apple tv.
thanks so much in advance to anyone who can help me out
p.s. i tried this...didnt work, unless i am doing it wrong
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Do not confuse (as you did) moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Portable Hard Drive will not show up in Disk Utility
I purchased a Toshiba Canvio Slim 500 GB hard drive a few months ago before I updated my computer to Mac OSX Version 10.6.8. I was running out of Hard Drive Space since I bought my computer in 2009 and decided to use a portable hard drive to store some of my personal information. I was able to read and successfully transfer data to the hard drive, but then I updated my computer to 10.6.8 and now I can't access it at all. It won't even show up in Disk Utility. I read on a few forums that some people were having the same problem as I was and they bought a y-cable adapter to power the hard drive through two usb cables. I bought one and tried it out and I'm still not having any luck. I tried using my girlfriend's computer to see if I can access it from her computer and it shows up in disk utility, but I can't access it. The lights turn on and I can hear it working like it worked the first day I used it, but nothing is happening. Please help me fix the problem.
Evidence, as scant as it is from Disk Utility, suggests the Toshiba external
HDD is indeed without Partion Map Scheme, has no files on it, unformatted.
So I wonder if there isn't a wire or defective circuit inside the box (enclosure)
that may be hiding access to the actual HDD unit inside there. Those kinds
of enclosures generally use a laptop 2.5" HDD since they can run on USB
power from the port. Matching up the internal HDD from that case, with an
other one with correct life support (connections) is a way to test it.
However if the Toshiba HD is a 3.5" standard drive, a larger enclosure, or
an adapter that simply plugs into the connections of the bare hard drive,
would be a way to access that external drive. These 'drive adapters' can
work with both SATA and IDE hard drives; or just one of the two. They
run in the range of $40 or so, and essentially are a wire kit with a power
adapter to spin the drive, but some do not even have the adapter, so as
to still use USB power for smaller drives of slower disc RPM speed.
Most competent computer stores with a skilled staff would know of these.
However some of the smaller HDD enclosures may be hard to open up.
And if there were a Toshiba warranty, this action could void the same.
Adapters would be to 'test the idea of recovering any data,' if enclosure
the drive shipped in has somehow developed a defect. Though it may
be if there is a defect, it may have existed at a point in time to affect
the actual save-to-disk process. Or later. A wire could be not allowing
information to be received, if broken or circuit damages, by the Mac.
But by the look of the Disk Utility's partition map, along with the other
earlier image that shows the same info in the bottom of the image of
the status, in Disk Description, this does not bode well for recovery.
I'm not sure what else to suggest. When the dust settles, Toshiba may
have a residual warranty that could only replace that one with another.
Some older mailorder catalogs show these kinds of adapters, some use
USB port power, others also include an AC adapter so standard faster
HDDs can be used without an enclosure. This also helps if one wants
temporary access to a hard disk drive, but does not want to install it.
•USB drive cable adapter kit SATA and IDE HDD - google results:
https://www.google.com/#q=USB+drive+cable+adapter+kit+SATA+and+IDE+HDD
Companies also make hot-swap docks to allow fast swapping of HDDs
of either or both 2.5" and 3.5" size, these have their own adapter and
one simply puts drives inside from the top, like a bread toaster.
Hopefully you can take the Toshiba along to a computer store and ask
a somewhat skilled person there about getting the cable adapter kit or
another enclosure. The cable adapter would cost less & be quicker, yet
that would still involve opening up the failed HDD's enclosure for access.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Playing Music off of Portable Hard Drive
I have all my music on a portable hard drive which I use as a main storage location. I hook it up to my computer through USB. I've not had trouble playing until I downloaded the latest version of iTunes. All my drivers are current.
The problem is that I've been playing through a list of songs, and part way through the songs, music stops coming out of the speakers. iTunes still is playing something, but the music isn't coming out. The music will pick back up when it gets to the next song. It always picks back up on the next song.
Anyone having similar issues?
Thanks,
JonActually, what I've realized is when I have a VPN connection open, it has the problem. I tried disabling searching for shared music and sharing my music, and I still had the same issue with my VPN connection open. When I close the connection, everything is just dandy, but if I open it, music stops playing. Anyone know of a way to get around this? The VPN client I am using is Cisco Systems VPN.

Finding RAW files on Portable Hard Drive
I've just bought a Portable Hard Drive for storing my RAW files. (LR recommended good practice, keeping 50% of my C drive empty!!)
Now...I am able to download from my Memory Card to the Portable Drive and tell LR where to find the images. - That's dandy!.
I can even move a small number (e.g. 6) RAW files from the C drive to the portable drive. The thumbnail then gets a "?" and when selected, tells me it cant find the (RAW) file and asks me where it is. I can do that since I moved them to a portable drive folder that I set up - That's fine too
What I don't know is how to move 3,000+ RAW files in (e.g.) 75 folders from the C drive to the portable drive without having to tell LR where EVERY one of them is.
LR help says
To locate missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library > Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.
But if I understand this correctly it is simply showing me that there are missing photos (not where they ought to be)
More helpfully, LR help also says
3(Optional) In the Locate dialog box, select Find Nearby Missing Photos to have Lightroom search for other missing photos in the folder and reconnect them automatically.
Does this mean I need to specifically describe the location of ONE from each folder then let LR find NEARBY Missing RAW files?
This might be a daft question, but do I need to set up my portable HD directory structure to be the same as my C drive to automate the synchronize??
Sorry if I'm missing what everyone else knows.
Steve McGI have the same problem in reverse. I have always had my original files on my external drive (and it just saved me in a crash last month.<br /><br />However now I -have copied- all my files to E: (an internal drive on my new computer), so I am 'missing' all my files.<br /><br />I understand the concept above about creating a master folder in LR2, and then does tha mean that you can locate one file in the master, and ask for all missing near that one and that it -will- go down to all subfolders?<br /><br />Lastly, how do I (we) get there from here?<br />On my hard drive, I do have a master folder. It is E:\PictureFolder. Everything I own is under that one, in their own major subject folders (01FamilyMiller, 02FamilySharp, etc.). Under those are yyyymmdd_<shootname> folders with the actual files.<br /><br />In LR2, I have imported the <shootname> folder only, so LR has 20080101_NewYearsAtLeslies, 20080430_VermontTrip, etc., e.g. strictly chronological, even though they are in separate category folders on the hard drive.<br /><br />Maybe now is the time to put major subject area and personal vs. professional master folders on LR2.<br /><br />Before I do any changes to folder structure in LR2, how do I get my hard drive folders connected to the ones in LR2, en masse?<br /><br />Do I just create PictureFolder in LR2 and then move all the "?", chronological LR folders under it??

Do I need to back up itunes library to a portable hard drive?
I'm in my late 50's and I'm totally new to ipod & itunes. I have just purchased the ipod classic 160g mainly because I want to store all my CD collection & download all the new stuff too. Have loads of tunes in my library & have been given mixed messages about backing up. If iTunes is stored online is the sole purpose of backing up just incase laptop goes down? Also, can I access my iTunes account from another computer?
I would definitely back up your iTunes on a seperate hard drive, iTunes is only stored on line if you've either bought the music from iTunes or if you subscribe to iTunes Match. Even if you have iTunes match, it isn't designed to be a back up, besides, why trust a third party with your valuable music?
You can have your iTunes account on 5 seperate computers. I wouldn't try to download music to a different computer using your iPod though, it might work if you sign in to your account on the other computer first but it'd be better to transfer from a portable hard drive.
