Portable HD woes caused by spotlight

I didn't see anywhere to put this but it's as close as any.
I'm not sure if this helps but when I plugged in my Western Digital HD to bring all my stuff back in things went ok until I tried opening up a few of my photos. Preview couldn't open most nor could the finder. Bridge could as well as Photoshop and Lightroom. I tried to delete one of the folders containing the "unreadable" photo's and I found I couldn't because the system was using it.....but how? I had nothing open. So then on a whim I clicked the Spotlight application search thing on the top right. Guess what? Spotlight was trying to index my portable HD! I had no idea (nor did I want it to do so) and the worst was I had been unplugging my drive instead of ejecting it because it started clicking. When a HD clicks I get very worried. So my guess is that Spotlight is like some bug burrowing deep and where it's not supposed and unless you allow it to finish what it's supposed (even when you didn't want it to) you can't do anything with that HD. I learnt that you can drag portable drives into the privacy window of the spotlight prefs so that it won't index it. The problem is is that you don't know this until it's too late. So know everytime I plug in my Portable HD it stalls and such because the system thinks it's supposed to be indexed by spotlight.
How does one go about telling the system that the portable HD is not to be index and that I would like to plug it in and use it at will dragging photo's and such back and forth?

wrong place to ask.

• Time Machine stopped backing up; Spotlight not working

Recently, Spotlight search stopped returning results for applications, and no amount of reseting Spotlight or rebuilding the index has helped. I had given up on that, then today I noticed that the last backup Time Machine completed was on 10 January 2013. Both scheduled backups and manual backups get terminated early, after backing up 30MB or so.
system.log in Console displays these messages for Spotlight and Time Machine respectively:

I have verified both my startup disk (XXX) and the external hard disk (YYY) I use for Time Machine, and both "appear to be OK".
Something is wrong with my system but I'm not sure what. Can someone help please? I'm using an iMac10,1 running 10.8.2.

Hi Linc,
Thanks for replying.
I managed to backup with Time Machine in safe mode and I can backup manually after rebooting. Spotlight still did not work normally in safe mode, but it appears to be working fine now… I am not sure if my problems have been resolved though.
Could you please take a look at the Console messages and, if possible, explain what they mean or what errors were encountered? I would like to know the cause of Spotlight and Time Machine's failure, and if it is possible to prevent.

• Spotlight not working atall

Sorry folks I realise there are several threads about this already but my spotlight isn't working from anywhere! If I use the find file option from finder, after I type in any 3 letters I am returned to the desktop. I've tried the repair permissions, rebooted and restarted but nothing seems to work.
Any advice please?

If you have not done so already, try a little "system maintenance." It worked for me on two occasions when apps (including Spotlight) were acting crazy.
Go to: http://www.jimmitchelldesigns.com/yasu/ and download Yasu. I suggest you run the daily, weekly and monthly chron scripts and cache cleaner as a minimum. Do other tasks as you wish. Consider making a donation to Jim Mitchell Designs, especially if this works.
If this does not work, go to:
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/spot/index.html and download Spotless. At the top of the panel choose your main system volume and see if Spotless finds any problems. If this works, register the shareware.
If everything seems ok at this point, but still nothing in your index and Spotlight is not showing that it is indexing, open the Spotlight preferences pane in System Preferences. Click on the privacy tab. Open Finder. Drag your System drive to the privacy area. Exit the Spotlight preference pane and then open it again (as a caution). Go to the privacy tab and delete the system drive you just added. Close the preference pane. This will force Spotlight to reindex the drive so expect some delays and system resource issues while this happens.
Next, are you running bluetooth? If so, search on "bluetooth" in the spotlight forum for several threads where the bluetooth icon was the root cause of spotlight problems. Workarounds and fixes are noted in threads such as:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1810218#1810218
Hopefully, one of these will get you going. I would try in the order listed.

• Iphoto takes at least 10 minutes to open

This is really dumb. I have 5000 photos and it takes more than 10 minutes to open Iphoto. I wanted to show some pictures this weekend and I was embarrassed to tell my sister that it would take like 15 minutes to open them. I would only expect this nonsense on a windows machine. Doesn't someone have a answer?

Do you have Windows installed via Bootcamp? Try unmounting that partition. The problem is caused by Spotlight trying to index it.

• How disable the access and charged for Cellphones by USB

I tried to disable access to storage USB devices to computers on Windows 7, I changed the key USBSTOR record the value of 4, and works well for flash drives, but when I connect my cell phone via USB is loaded as a portable disk which causes users of the
organization possess anyway the functionality of USB storage. Even disable autorun for all the devices (NoDriveTypeAutoRun = FF in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer).
The register values are unchanged included, so let me think that the cell phone is recognized as another type of device and not storage.
It is important to clarify that it was not necessary to install phone software before this process, but was done after applying changes

• My computer is really slow after installing lion

Help! I installed lion and now my computer is deathly slow. I also couldn't login initially. Scared about what's to come...

Has spotlight finished indexing yet? if not that could be the cause. if spotlight has finished indexing
you could try repairing disk permissions, with disk utility, clearing caches could also help.
Run activity monitor for a while and post a snapshot of it here.

• File error when rendering audio on finished project

Hi gang
When I go to render the audio before exporting, I get a file error message about 1 minute into the render that sez: "File error: specified file is open and in use by this or another application". I don't have any other projects open and I trashed my FCP prefs thinking it might fix the problem but same message appears again.
Any ideas?
thanks in advance

If spotlight is indexing (that is a background operation) it is using your file... just not allow spotlight to use your fcp scratch and you should not have this kind of problem in future...
I'd mark it helpful if I could. I've been having the same problem and got tired of "babysitting" my computer while I did a mixdown on long sequences. I just had a 10-minute audio render, and it gave me the error message 3 times. I found this reply and made the prefs changes and it finished just fine (unattended).
Thanks again,

Whenever AVI movie is selected in Finder brief File Info is listed including Preview in right panel. It contains such fields as Kind, Size, etc. and Duration. Unfortunately Duration field of all AVI files is empty (--). Is it possible somehow to make this field showing real number?
Otherwise I have to open every movie in Quicktime -> FileInfo to get movie Duration.

Spotlight reads file metadata (image dimensions, video dimension/duration for example), then Finder reads Spotlight's index and displays the information in column view and in the "Get Info" window. That's the basic concept, your/our problem is an issue caused by Spotlight.
Spotlight misses a plugin (*.mdimporter) telling it to read the metadata from .avi files. CoreMedia.mdimporter in System/Library/Spotlight links to .mov, .mpg, .mp4, .3ggp only. Well, to QuickTime's core media formats, you know.
A workaround is to save .avi files as .mov files ("movie container") in QuickTime Player. The file will not be exported/encoded in any way, it will simply be "compressed" in a container, kind of zipped, and Spotlight will read the information. It's just the file extension. In QuickTime 7 you have to select "self-contained movie", otherwise you'll create an alias. QuickTime X saves self-contained movies by default. Of course, this only works, if your .avi file opens with QuickTime Player...
A solution may simply be to edit the Info.plist in CoreMedia.mdimporter. I don't know. Most likely not, much too simple. And then there's still Code Signature.

• Font Problems Galor

I first noticed this problem in Pages, only one font would work, I would change to Times New Roman and nothing would happen, it would stay with the same font. Unfortunately I don't know which font this is, but ...moving on. Then I noticed all my fonts on my 'Stickies' in dashboard had been changed from 'marker' to some generic font. Somehow i fixed this by deleting lucidagrans directly from system/library/fonts and then putting it back in. This fixed all my problems, except when i restart the computer the problem is back. To try and solve these problems I went into Font Book and started fooling around I noticed that there are lots of duplicates of Lucidagrans Bold and regular so i tried disabling some of the duplicate. Note: they are listed two or three times, along with all having dots beside them. Disabling them causes the spotlight search bar in font book to type in random characters. Now my drop down menus in all applications are all incomplete and half impossible to read. All i want to do is RESET my fonts the way they were when i first got this computer, i never installed any fonts i dont know where this problem came from!

For a list of fonts that are installed by OS X, see here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301332
You can dump everything in Home/Library/Fonts, as OS X installs nothing there. Also dump all copies of Lucida Grande.ttf, but do NOT remove Lucida Grande.dfont found in System/Library/Fonts.
Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use Google to find it).

• Preview icon

Just updated Garage Band to 10.0.3 from 6.0.5 when I open my older files after saving them to a different name it no longer gives me the preview icon when in finder it just has the generic garage band file... any help?

I've seen posts where these kinds of problems were caused by spotlight.
try reindexing your hard drive with spotlight.
add it to spotlight's privacy pane for a few seconds and the remove it from the privacy pane.

• How can I resolve repeated Time Machine backup failures?

Time Machine stopped backing up from my wife's iMac 2 GHz Intel to a designated Iomega FireWire drive on August 6th. I have since erased, reformatted, and reselected the external drive. The profile for the external drive is as follows:
Manufacturer: Iomega
Model: 0x1
GUID: 0xD0B80E5B000BE6
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec

HDD USB 2.0/1394A Unit:
Unit Software Version: 0x10483
Unit Spec ID: 0x609E
Firmware Revision: 0x12804
Product Revision Level:
Sub-units:
HDD USB 2.0/1394A SBP-LUN:
Capacity: 149.05 GB
Removable Media: Yes
BSD Name: disk2
Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
Volumes:
Iomega Time Backup HD:
Capacity: 148.73 GB
Available: 148.31 GB
Writable: Yes
File System: Journaled HFS+
BSD Name: disk2s2
Mount Point: /Volumes/Iomega Time Backup HD
I have also performed Tech Tool Pro 4.6.2 Advanced Tests on all related hardware to repair any damaged volumes and files but the Time Machine backup stops after at 97.5 MB of approximately 60+ GB of data.
I have been unable to detect a cause for the failure in the Console logs but I note that the following entry has been repeated every few seconds in the system log since about August 23rd:
Aug 26 10:55:30 Dee-Coopers-iMac mds[37]: (Error) Import: importer:0x844400 Importer start failed for 501 (kr:268435459 (ipc/send) invalid destination port)
Aug 26 10:56:00: --- last message repeated 7 times ---

I had experienced the similar problem when I first upgraded to Leopard. The problem was caused by spotlight indexing my hard drive and at the same time Time Machine was trying to backup the spotlight index file. The solution was to temporary exclude most of the documents (I have a lot of pdf files) from spotlight and let it runs through the indexing process before starting Time Machine.
I don't know if my experience help you or not but it might be something worth looking into.
Good luck.

pretty painful in windows where the client has fixed size window

For example, if a window is 512x512 pixels (fixed), and it contains a
nested
window, the contents of this nested window are now partially not visible
because this nested window is now bigger than the panel in which it is
supposed to reside.
The windows were all developed on Windows 3.11, running at 1024x768
resolution, using large fonts. Moreover, all the Forté windows were
painted
using the portable font IconLabel, size 8, bold, which is provided as part
of
Forté.
We are now trying to run the application (same exact windows) on NT 4.0,
using the same resolution and font size as those on 3.11, but everything

Your help is GREATLY appreciated in this matter.
Thanks.
Elias. We saw the same sort of sizing problems moving from Windows 95 to NT
3.51. Part of the problem is that when you use fonts such as "Icon
Font" or "System Default" you can't guarentee that one OS' default fonts
are going to be the same as another's. And as you know, that's one of
the big changes in the interface from Win 3.1 / NT 3.x to Win 95 / NT
4.x. That fact that "Icon Font" is "portable" simply means that the OS
will have SOMETHING called an icon font - what that font actually is or
how big it appears isn't assured. Fortunately in our case we discovered
the problem early on and avoided it by avoiding multiple versions of
Windows; obviously that's not an option for you since you're upgrading
after the fact. Sorry I can't be of more help.....

Thanks for those of you who responded to my questions.
All of our windows ARE gridded. But the common thing that you all
suggested which we didn't have was using the Default Font. We
used IconLabel instead. The reason behind that decision was our
impression that IconLabel is a font that is provided by Forté and that
would ensure that all Client machines will ultimately have it. Was that
an incorrect assumption?
We thought that since our windows are gridded and they all used a
Forté provided portable font, we should NOT run into these problems.
The reason we did not use the Default Font was because this font
may differ from one machine to another. A user can actually have
their machine use a different font than the default...
We have come to the conclusion that we'll have to change the fonts
on our windows. But I'd like a clarification on my 2 assumptions above:
1) Shouldn't IconLabel (a Forté provided portable font) not cause this
problem?
2) Can't the Default Font be different from one machine to another?
Thanks for your help!
Elias.

• !HELP! Washed out images

What can I do to fix washed out images caused by spotlights in a theatre. The theatre is dark with a single and sometimes two spotlights on the stage.

In the future....
1) Man both cameras
2) Use Manual Controls
3) lock your shutter at 60... set gain to 0dB (or as low as possible if you need extra gain)
4) activate the cameras zebra stripes
5) control your exposure using the iris
if you don't know how to activate your camera's zebras check the documentation for your camcorders. if you don't know how to use the zebras to judge exposure there is plenty on the internet about it.
Get the best footage you can at the shooting stage. You can do more with SLIGHTLY underexposed footage, as video holds more detail in the blacks than the highlights. Once you overexpose (clip) your video signal there is no information to work with. Just white.

• Software crash... Having to do with memory?

Hey guys I have a 1.33 g 12in power book. It came with 256 mh of memory so I put in a third party 1g stick. Since than I'v been experencing random crashes. I had dealt with the problem because the crashes weren't that big of a deal. But I recently reformated my computer and backed up everything with Iback up. After that and updating all my software my Microsoft word seems to crash everything I want to save a new document. The same goes with Itunes everytime I try to add music to the library.
Any inputs?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If you do a scan of the discussions, you'll see many woes caused by, typically, inexpensive or off-brand memory. While memory may meet the printed specs, ie, PC2700, that doesn't mean it will work with Apple's architecture (your system uses bus slewing, which requires memory able to work with voltage fluctuations based on system load - see below for more info).
Recommend Crucial, Kingston (not their valueram line), or Samsung. These 3 brands work consistently (you can also do a search to see what other brands have worked for people). Crucial guarantees that memory chosen through their memory selector will work in your machine. Kingston provides links to a number of commercial sites. Samsung is available from a number of sources.
Crucial: http://www.crucial.com
Kingston: http://www.kingston.com
Samsung: http://www.macsales.com (one source)
If you're outside the US, they have representatives and outlets globally.
And In the more than you may want to know column....here's how Apple describes bus slewing in the PB 12": To lower power consumption and heat generation, the 12-inch PowerBook G4 incorporates an automatic power management technique called bus slewing. Bus slewing is designed to run at high processor speed, bus speeds, and voltage when the demand on the processor is high, and to run at low processor speed, bus speeds, and voltage when the demand on the processor is low. Switching between different processor/bus speeds and voltages is achieved by a transition that operates seamlessly to the user and should not impact system or application performance.

• Mac Pro optical drive problems

I have a 2009 Mac Pro and have been having problems with optical drives I've installed in the lower bay. I initially installed a Toshiba drive that had Lightscribe technology, as I needed this for my wife's business and my Lacie external Lightscribe drive finally died. This drive worked great except for a loud "click, click" noise that it made every few minutes when not in use. I had originally attributed this noise to a hard drive starting or stopping but after repeated attempts to isolate the drive were unsuccessful, I resorted to using my old mechanic's stethescope and the noise seemed to be coming from the lower optical drive. I confirmed this by opening its tray and leaving it open which got rid of the noise. It was a very annoying noise, easily heard in my bedroom across the hall when the machine was asleep (and I wasn't). I decided to change it out for a Blu-Ray drive as the prices had come down out of the stratosphere. I bought a Pioneer drive from OWC and after having it disappear and reapper on me, behavior verified as a problem by checking these boards, I exchanged it for an LG unit. This one works fine and seems to stay recognized by the Apps that use it but a "click" is back. This occurs with about the same frequency as the Toshiba but is a single click and is much quieter. There is no periodic noise from the factory Superdrive. Someone suggested somewhere that this could be caused by Spotlight trying to access the drive. This doesn't seem logical as the noise only happens when there is no disk mounted. Would there be any software that would periodically "ping" the optical drive, even when the system was asleep? I can live with the noise from this one but am still curious if others have had this problem, and may have come up with a solution. Thanks, Ted
The drive installed now is an LG model number: WH12LS39KMP, the previous noisy drive was a Toshiba SH-S223

Repeated starting and stopping hard drives is not a good idea, and should be limited to laptops running on battery power. With most, the heads rub on the discs while starting or stopping. Drives specs usually allow only 25,000 to 50,000 starts. Temperature changes between running and sleeping puts stress on electronics, and can cause earlier failures. Also the starting current stresses the motur circuitry.
Apple optical drives have special firmware. If you look in the "ATA" section of "System Profiler" (Utilities folder) you should see that the Apple supplied drive supports "Low Power Polling". This may be why Apple optical drives don't have problems with drive sleep mode.
