Portable Power for Mini?

I am thinking of using a Mini for a "Direct Capture" video device. Plug a DVI to Composite adapter to a 7 inch LCD, firewire to the camera and Viola...Now I just need some way to power the whole thing in the field...Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you!!!

Personally I think you'd do better with a laptop - not only designed to be used away from a conventional power source and thus run from batteries for several hours, but also self-contained and designed for portability. I suspect a base model MacBook would be less expensive than a Mac mini, 7" LCD, adapters, suitable battery and inverter, and likely run longer and give rather better overall video quality.
That said, there have been a number of users over the lifespan of the mac mini who have used them mobile. Googling for details of how that has been accomplished may well help, though in most instances would likely be using the 12v car battery with inverter - not a particularly mobile solution away from a car.

  • Energizer Energi To Go Portable Power for iPod

I was just wondering if I could use the Energizer Energi To Go Portable Power for iPod with my iPhone. The reason why I'm asking this is because I'm going to be on a 19 hour flight and I know that my battery will run out by then (watching videos, listening to music) and I just want to make sure that it wont screw up my iPhone. I've been looking at other battery powered chargers and I want one that I can keep on putting batteries in, and this one was the only one i found from a reputable company... any help would be awesome!

A couple of years ago I bought a little device called tunejuice. Think it was from everythingipod.com. I bought it for the same reason, long trip, and it worked fine. I suspect they make something similar now for the 30 pin ipod, ipod touch and iphone.
I was wondering about the energizer power to go also. Sounds like it doesn't really work. Anyone?

  • Power for mini

This may be the wrong place to ask this, but here goes.
My mini and I live on a boat, so the power needed to run it is neither abundant nor constant. We have a 12V system running an inverter for 110VAC loads and it gets turned off when not in use, because it draws power even at "idle". Leaving it "on" all night would eat up many amp-hours of precious electricity.
But, if the mini is put to "sleep", I imagine it still needs power, abeit a small amount, and if it's asleep and the power is switched off...??? Probable disaster!!??
I think computers run on DC current, so I would be taking 12VDC, inverting it to 110VAC, then the mini would take that AC and transform it into whatever DC voltage it needs to run itself.
Couldn't I get a transformer to bring the 12VDC directly to whatever DC voltage the mini likes?
If so, how would I find out what that voltage is?
    Thanks

    Hi Daddy....
I haven't seen or purchased one yet, but this seems to be the answer:

It deals with a lot of automotive issues, like Starter Surge and Speaker Pop, so it seems to be well thought out. Retail is about $100.

  • Is anyone having problems with the battery heating up and draining the power?  Mine has been doing this for about 2 months now.

Is anyone having problems with the battery heating up and draining the power?  Mine has been doing this for about 2 months now.

This is a major problem with Lollipop, but yo said it started 2 months ago.   Several people have fixed problem by removing FaceBook And Face book messenger and then re loading the apps again.   You might want to clear your cache before reloading.  Not sure this is your problem, but worth a try.  Good Luck

Here's the one I love, the Altec Lansing iM 237. Don't be put off by the small size or cheap price. I have two, one for home and one for my studio/travel.

  • Portable Power Supply for iPhone 3G

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a portable USB power supply for my iPhone 3G.
I will be flying next month, so I need something to provide additional power while I am in the air.
I have searched around, and found:
IGO® POWERXTENDER UNIVERSAL AA BATTERY-OPERATED CHARGER
    http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&catego ry=iGo-HO&product=2739104
IGO POWER TIP-A133 (adapter for iPod/iPhone)
    http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&catego ry=iGo-Tips&product=2739128
I live in Canada (so I can't buy from places such as Amazon.com) and would like to keep the cost to a minimum (I don't fly all that often).
I am wondering what people recommend for an affordable portable power supply, that accepts USB?
    Thanks for your time.

There is power lost when using these chargers. Loss due to current creating heat in the wiring, loss in the iPhone battery that is being charged due to resistance in the battery, and loss due to the semiconductor devices used to manage the charging process. Not all of your 1000 mAh "ends up" in the iPhone battery.
I said "more than half" and that is literally true but a little pessimistic sounding. Maybe 70-80 percent. But I do not know. It will not be 87 percent. That's still good, to me.
Here is a quote from the instruction sheet for my 1200 mAh Richardsolo battery:
"If you have a 20-30% charge remaining in your iPhone, a fully-charged backup battery will bring the iPhone back to about a full charge. Once your iPhone is below 20% remaining battery charge, you may
not quite get a complete recharge from the backup battery, but close."
I find those percentages to be about right.
Regarding Amazon review, I think that is true only for an iPhone that is only partly discharged, not completely discharged.

  • What to look for in UPS for Mini?

I'm looking for a modestly-priced UPS which can protect a Mini even if no one is present to shut down the Mini manually.
I'm not clear about how usb communication between the UPS and the Mini is supposed to work:
Does it signal the Mini to go to sleep, and then when the UPS finally cuts the power, the Mini is OK because the pre-shutoff state is safely saved in the "sleep file"?
Or does it require special software on the Mini that actually issues a shutdown command to the Mini? (This would seem prone to failure, since shutdown commands sometimes fail if processes aren't willing to terminated.)
Even though I always have used UPSes, I've never had them automatically turn off or sleep my computers, so I could use some education in this area. The UPS is for a computer novice who would not be able to manually shut off the Mini in time. The user's Mini is Core2Duo, Leopard 10.5.6.

Check out the APC ES line of UPS. The USB connection allows the Mac mini to monitor the connection between it and the APC UPS. In the Energy Saver Preferences you'll have several options to configure your mini to handle shutdowns using the Shutdown Options button - based on time of battery usage, remaining time of UPS battery and percentage of UPS battery. You don't even have to load the Powerchute software that is provided if you prefer not to use it.

  • My Macbook Pro ran out of battery last night and wouldn't turn back on even when connected to power for a period of time. However, when I woke up, it did turn on. Is there a reason this happened and should I get it looked at?

Last night, I was watching something on my Macbook Pro and it died (out of battery). I went to plug it in and waited a couple of minutes to try and start it back up. However, when I connected the power source the light was green, which could not have been the case since I know 100% it was out of battery. I proceeded to hold the start button for a long period of time, but my computer made no noise and refused to turn on - it looked like for all intensive purposes it was dead. I left it alone overnight praying that it would be alright in the morning and luckily, when I opened the computer this morning it was restarted and fine. I'm concerned because I've had this happen to me a couple of times and while it always turns back on, I feel like there is a bigger issue that I need to get addressed. Can anyone help me with this? Any ideas? Thank you!

Apple Does Not recommend that. Please Read.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
    From that article
    "Portables with built-in batteries"
Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?

  • How do I transfer files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new one?

Oops...thought I had to write the question in the above spot.
Question:  How do I transfer my files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new Intel based Mac Mini?  From what I read, I needed a 40/80 cable, which I bought.  However, I only have one monitor.
(I tried to copy files onto a blank dvd, but it wouldn't format and kept spitting the disk out) (?)

    Anna,

Jolly makes a good point about screen sharing.
I prefer the firewire approach just because I have had more problems with ethernet connections than with firewire connections.  Both options work, firewire has just been easier for me when the operating system on the machines are different.  Read the options and post back if you would like additional coaching.

  • What product can I buy that will provide portable power to my MacBook Pro and iPhone and iPad when I am flying?

What product can I buy that will supply portable power to my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad when I am flying?
I recently was on an extended trip and the port for charging at my seat was not working.

    Unfortuntly you can't.
The Apple Airline adapter is only meant to keep a fully charged battery from draining, however with newer computers requiring more power, they tend to drain the battery AND the power at the same time, thus require more power hook up without the computer running to charge the battery.
Since your iPhone and iPad charge off USB, that's going to drain the MacBook Pro battery as well.
To generate enough power to charge all three will require a portable generator which of course can't be used on a plane.
The best you can do is have all three charged up before you board the plane, and use each for as long as you can.

  • Wvc80n Portable Power Supply?

Has anyone found a successful way to power the wvc80n using a portable power supply? I need to place the camera in an area with no outlet. I need the camera to be powered for at least 4 hours but 8 would be optimal. Anyone have any suggestions on a portable power solution like a battery pack or rechargeable power supply? Thanks, any advice welcomed!

What you need to consider most of all is that the portable power supply should support the power specs for the camera. I did check it from the website and the power specs is 5V 1 A.

  • 65W  Portable Power Adaptor problem

The plug-in that has the electrical prong on my 65W Portable Power Adaptor is shorting out and nonfunctioning. When I tried to find that prong replacement I was told I had to buy an entirely new 65W PPA for $79. Does anyone know where I can purchase JUST the electral prong plug-in for the 65W PPA?

Reset the PMU (power management unit) and re-calibrate the Battery - if that has no effect call Apple about a replacement.

  • Portable power query

Hi there, can anybody recommend a means of powering my 15" mbp and ext hard drive, when working away from a mains power source. I am looking to upload and edit footage "out in the field" as it were and need say 10 hours of use minimum. Can I use those portable power packs (the type that campers etc would use to power portable DVD players) etc?
