Portadat to FCP 7 on MacBook Pro?

I have a timecode portadat. What hardware and software do I need to transfer it to final cut pro 7 on my macbook pro?

I"ve encountered just the opposite.. works fine with my MBP, and my MP... Both had clean installs done to them though... as in erase and install.
Since you can capture HDV, your FireWire bus is likely alright... what are you using to capture DV with?

  • FCP on New MacBook Pro 15" Appears Black!

Loaded FCP 7.0 on new MacBook Pro (15") and when I open the program the screen is black. If I take cursor to corner and show all applications I see the windows that make up FCP. When I select one of them the screen is black again.

Press ESC...or Apple-F12. For some reason it is launching in FULL SCREEN DISPLAY mode, or Digital Cinema Desktop.

  • Anybody experience with FCP X and Macbook pro 15inch 2.2?

My old mid 2009 macbook harddrive died on me today, and I'm thinking to upgrade. Sell the old one and buy the new 2011 2.2. The old one was slow in rendering and had lots and lots and lots of spinning beachballs. Was I pushing it too hard? Don't know, but it was horrible. I lost so much time.
Anyway, does anybody have this combo fcp x and the new 15inch macbook pro with the 1gig card and what are your findings??
    Thanks
    Peter

I've got a 2011/2.2/8GB/6750 running FCPX. Once I troubleshooted my external HDs (a Drobo that was nearly full with Time Machine backups was slowing down the entire Firewire bus) things run a lot better. I'm currently storing video on a Promise Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt RAID and the entire system is pretty snappy. The only slowdowns are:
    1. clips, events, and projects on slower hard drives can slow down launching the app and screen refreshes
    2. FCPX is still flakey. It will run great for a whole day and then will refuse to launch the next morning.
    3. exporting through Compressor is slow, particularly when I'm under deadline! 10 minute HD segments can take an hour or so. The Activity Monitor shows the CPUs maxed out, so I suspect that's the bottleneck. I've tried setting up distributed rendering but it doesn't work quite yet.
    4. FCPX can be a RAM hog, so if you're a rabid multi-tasker like me, prepare to beachball or change your wicked ways.
All in all, FCPX runs pretty well on my MBP. If video editing was my main line of business, I'd seriously consider a Mac Pro stuffed with RAM and as many cores as I can find. I might wait for a newer one with Thunderbolt though for a bit of future-proofing.
    Hope this helps...

  • FCP X on MacBook Pro(to the max)

I need opinions, pros/cons on whether MacBook Pro can handle FCP X. Let's say the MBP would be my only option and it would have top of every option; ie, 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM, etc.
I am a professional editor who has a non-Intel MAC PRO (old model).
    Thank you in advance.

Many people  use MBPs with that sort of spec very successfully.
Many also use models with a lower spec.
Having said that, if you read the forum, you will find some editors with MacPros of the highest spec complaining of problems with FCP X.
One problem is that no two people have exactly the same setup or workflow, so you can get 2 people with superficially the same equipment reporting quite different results.

  • Using FCP 7 with Macbook Pro Retina Display?

    Hi there
I am one of the many editor that won't be moving to FCPX and sticking with FCP 7 for the time being.
My question is has anyone used FCP 7 with the new Retina Macbook Pros ?
I'm basically looking to see it FCP 7 is useable on the retina display to help me to decide to buy one or not....My current Macbook Pro is nearly 4 years old and crying for an update but there a few concerns with the new model
    1. Screen resolution is actually lower running FCP 7 and other software that isn't optimised for retina display?
    2. No Firewire ports
    3. No audio input
    Any help really appreciated

FCP 7 is no longer in apples update lists so there is a chance that it has issues with the newer hardware (thunderbolt). I would guess there must be a firewire 800 PCIe card that could be used via a thunderbolt doc but how fcp is going to behave with it remains to be seen. Also FCP should not be able to take advantage of the retina display for the reason above.
Of course someone with such a macbook pro and fcp could always jump in this thread and clarify matters for all.
    Good luck

  • Fcp lag on macbook pro

i've noticed a lag when editing on my macbook pro. It's something i've never experienced in fcp, and indeed is only happening on my mbp, not on my slower imac.
it's pretty subtle, but very annoying. basically the mouse freezes up for about 3 seconds. it's usually when i'm in the timeline. i press play, it starts playing right away, but the mouse is unresponsive for about 3 seconds.
both my machines have 2gb of ram, both running fcp 6.0.1.
has anyone else experienced this? any ideas?
    thanks.

I also had problems with the trackpad periodically stuttering on my new MBP.
Someone suggested that I turn off the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" in the system preffs.
I think it may have helped. Although I still experience missed letters when typing.
Let me know if you see a difference.
    good luck,
    g

  • Transfer FCP License from Macbook Pro to iMac

I am about to begin editing a huge project, and currently I have Final Cut Pro 7 on my Macbook Pro Version 10.6.8. I am fine to edit on this computer, but I would prefer to edit on an iMac that formerly belonged to a friend but I now have in my possession.
So my question is: what are the steps to transferring my FCP license from my Macbook Pro to the iMac?
I do a lot of traveling and editing, so I do not want this to be a permanent transfer. How will I then be able to transfer the FCP license back to the Macbook Pro in a few months?
    Thanks!

The FCP license allows a desktop and laptop installation just so long as they are not used simultaneously.
Install the software and have at it.

  • FCP and new MacBook Pro

I've heard that Final Cut Pro will not work on the new Mac Book Pro laptops.
Has anyone else heard this? It may take some time before they get an upgrade fror this.
I'm keen to upgrade from my 17" Powerbook G4 to the new MacBook Pro for video editing, using photoshop and after effects etc. Has anyone else heard about speed improvement in this area?
    Thanks for any comment.
    EZ><

Yes, I believe to some degree they needed to get something out there and this is filler. I've been wanting a new 15", but will continue to use my old one. I believe it is more pro than the new MBP. I am not one of those complainers, but I live by my pci slot, especially on location, and the express/34 situation is a nightmare right now. I've read a few posts on different forums about the fw400 port not getting enough power and it being traced to the built-in isight. I don't know if it's true, but wouldn't be surprised.

  • Best suited machine for FCP (iMac or MacBook Pro)

    Hello,
I'm planning to replace my "old Maggi"... what!? I'm the only one around here who name his computer? (^_^)... anyway, as I was saying, I'm planning to replace my old G5 desktop dual 2.0Ghz for a new machine.
I would love to put my hands on a brand new Mac Pro but the price is too much for my current budget so I was thinking in a more "wallet friendly" option.
I need a machine powerful enough so it can handle pretty intensive work with *Final Cut Pro* and 3D (mainly Blender but also a bit of Cinema 4D). This is where I need some advice.
As I said before, I cannot afford a Mac Pro, so I was thinking that my best option relies between an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
Portability is not an issue, I'm more concern about "raw power". Of course I can get an idea just by reading each machine's specs, but there must be "small details" that make the difference. Plus a quote of "users' experience" that I would like to hear so I can make a "well informed purchase".
    I'll really appreciate any advice.
P.S. That's right, MAGI... as in NEON GENESIS EVANGELION... I know, I'm a nerd, ha ha ha.

if you are not terribly risk adverse ...
Implied in this statement - this process voids the Apple warranty and any free support for hardware issues at an Apple store.
I really don't care if the hacking company will stand behind the mod, it means sending the machine back to deal with it and they will not deal with ANY other issues that are unrelated to their mod - eg, if the screen dies in the first year, you are toast.
Doing the mod on a 3 year old machine makes sense as there is no warrenty at that time. Doing it on a brand new machine makes absolutely no sense - particularly as there are other options out there.

  • FCP and 13in macbook pro

heres the deal...i need to know if i can run FCP on a 13in macbok pro, the $1499 model? i havent had experience with a mac in over 5 years and ive only used a PC with premire to edit video, and frankly im kind of lost. i can really only afford the 13in and will only using it to do rough cuts at home- my main work will be at school using the colleges mac pros in their editing suites. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'd be better off buying a refurb 15"... Look for an Intel machine... these older machines have more ports, and will do you MUCH better than the current 13" machines.

These macs change daily or even every few hours, so keep your eye's peeled there. Saw a 15" there for less than what you're looking at new. I really believe I'm steering you in the right direction too...

  • Fcp 3 and macbook pro 17" install prob

not sure if this issue has been addressed, or whether it's a unique one, but here goes:
i have fcp 3 (legit: complete w/ box, manuals, serial, etc). i've had it for awhile but never got around to it. now i'm motivated to load it and learn to use the software.
however, at initial installation, it gives me the (something like) "not original cd" error message.
i poked around on the forum and found an apple link that says fcp 4 or earlier won't work on my laptop (is that right?). if that's the case, what are my options?
    thx!

We could try dazzling him by refecting the sun from the playing surfaces of Jimi Hendrix CDs.
Gaining enough time for us to run away and hide.
But then one of us would remember we have to go to his house and borrow the DV converter.
    As mentioned...very sharp teeth.

  • Reinstalling FCP7 in my new Macbook Pro Retina Display. I have my serial numbers back to FCP1. But it tells me that I have an invalid serial number.  Why?

Reinstalling FCP in new Macbook Pro Retina from time machine backup.  Have all serial numbers back to FCP1 but I am warned I have an invalid serial number.  How can that be!  I need to install and use this weekend.
Thank you in advance for the help.

How, exactly are you doing this?
When I restored  my new computer from the time machine, the software was transfer to the new machine, in the past when double clicking the icon it would come up and ask for the serial numbers.  This time was the same with the exception of:
I did not enter an invalid serial number, I tried all the numbers I have.  But none of them worked.
I will try to install from discs.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook pro retina and Fullscreen mode freeze

    Hi
I cant get fullscreen playing in FCP 7 on Macbook pro retina mid 2012 running 10.8.3mountain lion
It wil show only a stil image and not play the video live.
This happens on the macbook, and on external monitor, in all display settings available in fcp7. It worked some months ago thou... may there be a osx problem?
Can I go back to earlier osx?
Anyone using 10.8.3, retina, and can do fullscreen mode?
    best
    thomas

What format sources and what are your sequence settings?  I seem to remember that some non-standard formats will not play in full screen mode.
Also, you might try deleting your preferences.  I strongly recommend using digital rebellion's preference manager to back up, trash and restore fcp and many other apps preferences.

  • Component out to firewire in MacBook Pro

I'll be covering a conference soon using 3 Pana HVX 200 cameras. The output of each camera (in 1080i mode) will feed component inputs of a Centrix switcher. I want to take the switched component output of the switcher and capture using firewire in FCP using my MacBook Pro with an external HD. Anyone know of a solution for this? Thanks!
