Portal or Forms/Reports for the Web ?

Hello,
I am thinking of creating an extranet and was going to use Portal - but coming from a forms/reports background I am thinking of looking at 9i forms/reports. Are they still thick clients as when I played around with web-deployed forms before they seemed pretty slow. Would I be better off writing it in Portal ?

Hi
I think Portal applications are much more simple to build and lighter than developer apps, but Portal fits better to "simple" apps, without many business rules, complex validation/navigation etc. If the app you need to build has such characteristics, maybe you must use developer.

  • What's the fastest way to create simple report for the web?

I have Developer 6i and Oracle 9I installed.
If i have a report already done, how can I make it available to users, so they can access them thru an IP or a host?
can I achieve that just with my developer 6i (report builder) and my database (oracle 9i)???
    If so, how?

    2) Better to have 9i builder - 9i ias combinations
(not sure whether other combination is supported or not. but understandably it is best to have same combination]

  • How to deploy existing forms and reports on the web

    Hi Guys,
I have 6i forms and reports within our environment, and we are running client/server architecture, by installing forms and reports runtime on each client PC's. We would like to get rid of this by deploying forms and reports on the web, without zero coding. Can any one suggest and guide me through the process with proper security mechanism enabled along with.
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks for the update,
We have a develpment 10g AS environment setup made,
    1) But we are really confused how to present the forms and reports.
We have around 250 forms and reports running on client/server architecture. All these forms/reports have been copied to a fileshare and access control is restricted by folder security.
    2) How to deploy forms - entries within formsweb.cfg with Named Configuration sections.
    3) How to deploy reports, as to were to copy the .rep files.
    getting the following error
REP-110: Unable to open file 'Car_Readings.rep'.

    Dear Jenny,
I am running reports from Forms 6i on the WEB. I did not encounter your problem. Nevertheless I would like to share the following with you.
RUN_PRODUCT doesn't work for calling reports ON THE WEB. Instead using RUN_PRODUCT do the following:
    1. Install Oracle Reports Server
    2. For WEB calls of reports use WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT
    3. Learn how to pass parameters to the reports. It is a litlle bit strange, but it is explaint excellent in the documentation to the Reports Server.
I hope this will help you.

  • Call Oracle Help for Java in Oracle forms running in the web

    Hi, everyone,
We are developing a web-enabled Oracle database application
system. Oracle suggested us to use Oracle Help for Java(OHJ) to

successfully created a OHJ program which can be independently.
But we still have no idea how to call this OHJ program from the

  • Displaying report in .pdf format while Running oracle reports over the web

I am running a report over the web via IE. I am suing .pdf
format as the file type. The problem I am facing is that the

    in R12 I found 2 choice
    1) when submitting requests (if available) you can set the output format by using the Options button (upon sompletion section):
layout --> format --> select format you need (RTF/HTML/EXCEL/PDF)
    2) in the request form (view->request) selecr the report you want to reprint in the Tools menu select print/republish, in the html page that pop up select output format you want, number of copies =1 submit

  • Can you put Forms 6 on the web without OAS?

Do you have to use the Oracle Application Server if you want to put Forms 6 applications on the web?
Is it possible to configure webforms system without using OAS?

    Thanks.

    Bob,
I have been watching this discussion group now for some time and I have noticed that you are answering a lot of questions about Oracle Developer, mostly correctly.
However, your experiences with Netscape and Jinitiator seem a little unfortunate, you (and others) may find the following information useful
The problem you have referred to where the form does not appear was a known problem both with Jinitiator 1.1.5.21.1 and the original shipment of forms 6.0.5.29.1. This problem is usually fixed (depending on what was the root of your problem) by upgrading past patch 3 of ODS6 and upto Jinitiator 1.1.7.18.
There are other reasons that the form may not appear but these are usually flagged by an FRM-99999 error. Not overly helpful I understand, but drilling in on the java console window that pops up will usually point out the area of the problem. We realise that this is not necessarily as helpful as it could be and we will be shortly posting a document (to the tune of 121 pages) where a lot of the FRM-99999 errors are explained and a method for troubleshooting is outlined.
The following configurations can be used for running ODS
    Netscape 4 + Jinit
    IE 4/5 + Jinit
    IE5 incl Patch 1 Native
    Appletviewer
In answer to the question from Richard Chadd you can happily run ODS6 without OAS, as Bob correctly points out, if you don't want to use the cartridge.
The cartridge is needed if you want to deploy your Forms Server application across multiple machines, the reason for this is that the cartridge (in v6) is the only method for accessing a variable called LEASTLOADEDHOST, this variable is used to indicate to the Metrics Server (the element inside ODS that manages the connections on each machine) the number of concurrent connections on each machine.
If you are happy running on one machine (from a user count and hardware point of view) then you will not need to do load balancing and therefore will not need to use OAS.
With the latest release of Oracle Forms Server release 6i (note the name change) you will never need OAS, even if you want to load balance. We will be supplying a CGI executable that provides the same (and more) functionality as the OAS cartridge, thus you will be able to deploy your OFS applications to multiple machines and still stick with your favourite web server.
The other features we have added in 6i are
    - Smart Server Install
    - SSL
    - HTTP
    - OEM Integration
For full details you should download the product details from Technet, but in short the smart server install should resolve a lot of the problems that we are seeing on this (and other) discussion lists. It basically asks a series of questions and (based on your answers) chooses to install and set up it's own lightweight listener (taken from WebDB) and creates the base html files, the virtual directory mappings etc etc.
The HTTP is the same as was in 6.0 but is now a supported feature as opposed to being a beta feature, you may now optionally choose to switch on SSL for that communication as well.
The OEM integration refers to Oracle Enterprise Manager, you may now install an agent on an OFS box and the agent will report to OEM that OFS is installed and will thus allow you to start and stop forms listeners, dynamically turn on logging, kill users etc etc all remotely.
Sorry if this seems like a marketing message, but I thought you might like a heads up on what is now available.
I also thought that you might like to know that we in Product Management spend a large amount of time watching discussion groups and newsgroups.
If you are looking to discuss OFS with other like minded users then there are also several other places that Product Management may be seen, these are comp.databases.oracle.tools and the ODTUG mailing list.
Obviously the newsgroups are free, but ODTUG requires you to purchase a membership.

  • Crystal Viewer for the Web

    Hello,
We are currently attempting to use Crystal reports out on our web, the reports are static and we were told that there is a free viewer down load for the web, is this current?  If so where would you be able to provide me the link?  I have also been told that there are only 3 threads available if we use the Viewer, which I believe indicates that we can only have 3 consecutive users, is this also true?
    Thanks for your time.....

    Just as an FYI, htere is a forum for SDK developers (.NET Development - Crystal Reports;
SAP Crystal Reports, version for Visual Studio) that will be better to post to in the future.
To create a web app in.NET you will need to reference the Crystal Reports assemblies for .net, place the viewer on your form, code the report path and any database logon parameters as well as any other code that you need to run the report (selection formulas, parameters, etc., etc.). Greetings anandhi108,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with the Photos app on your iPhone. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities,

How can we run Oracle Reports from the web - for example from a portal such as "Gateway"
This is a univeristy that implements Banner - so can we run them from within Banner?

Yes, of course. And for running the reports-server you need an OAS. Maybe here is a good starting point http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/reports.html

Hi Ruth, I'm guess it was probably me who presented to you (hope it was useful!!).
Ok - For the sake of building, testing and running the Developer Suite 10g contains everything you need. This will allow you do everything you need to do (as far as Forms is concerned) and mirrors the app server. This should allow you to iron out most of the issues before you deploy on the app server.
Using the Developer Suite once you are happy that the Forms application works as you require, you can deployon the app server for testing of any integrated features (such as if you are integrating with SSO).
But if you are "upgrade process from Oracle 6 to 10g for a small sample of our forms and reports to find out what problems we may encounter" the the Developer Suite 10g and an appropriate database is all you need at this stage.

  • Printing Report on the Web

    Hi all,
I have a question about printing the report on the web.
I would like to directly print the report once I press the button in the web form. The method I am now using is just hard-code the URL of the report link to the button.
However, I want to print the report directly to the printer once I press the button, but I am not successful.
I have already set the following:
    destype=printer
    destname=HP4050
My printer is on the network where the port is specified by the HP is NPIAB7C2B. Is it related to the link that I need to included?
    Thx first~
    Patrick.

    Hi
Was a solution found for this?
I also want to print a report straight to the users default printer without them having to open Adobe on the web and then selecting File > Print?
The forms version is Forms 10g and running on the report on the report server.
I can thus transfer the report from the report server to the local pc of the user, but I still don’t have a way of printing the PDF file once it is there.
I know about the adobe command line below, but that assumes you know the users verion of Adome and the location of where it is installed.
    AcroRd32.exe "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" /p "c:\temp\test.pdf"
Id there a way to get arounf this?
