Portege 244OCT - Is it possible to boot from a external CD-ROOM

Hi,
I've just got an old Toshiba Portege 344OCT laptop with an HD of 6 GB and with an intel Pentium III processor 500 MHz and 128 MB RAM. At the moment i have it under Windows XP Home Edition. I would like to revert it to Windows 98SE but the computer does not have an floppy drive or an internal cdrom. It does have an usb port, though. I am trying to boot the windows 98 cd from an external usb cdrom drive (EZ-DUB) but it doesn't work. I don't seem to find an option to boot it from an USB device either. My bios is from 27 June 2001.
Is there something that I can do in order to manage to boot my computer from my EZ-BUB? and how could I update my bios to the v1.6 without the floppy drive?

Im not sure but I think an external FDD should work but I doubt that the external CD drive will work.
What you can do? In your case I would copy the win98 folder on the HDD. Therefore remove the HDD and connect it to an other notebook or PC as external HDD. Format it with FAT32 and copy the win98 folder from the CD on it.
Put the HDD back in the notebook and start the installation if you boot from an external FDD and a Windows 98 boot disk.

In the bios boot menu, I can't find anything related to external CD room. From the list, I have only 3 things.
HDD/SDD
FDD
LAN
How I suppose to boot from the external DVD room that came with the laptop?
The part-no of the model is PST4EL-00t00G. I have checked the latest BIOS for this model but it seems there is no update of this BIOS.

However, the BIOS supports the booting from following devices:
USB FDD,
Primary HDD/SSD,
USB ODD,
Network (LAN),
e-SATA supported at the same time
Usually the USB drive (ODD) needs to be connected before trying to boot from this device.
The notebook should be ON now connect the USB ODD. Windows should recognize and connected USB device Now power OFF the T230.
After that power ON the T230holding F12 button then release the F12 and wait until Boot menu would appear using the up and down arrow buttons you could select the USB option

How to Boot From an External HD

I am still pondering getting a mini - I know that I will want a much larger hard drive (since I want to use it for media and will keep tons of video and music on it). I would like to know how to boot from an external hard drive. I've searched google, the forums, and apple support, and see people mention it all the time, but can't find out how to do it, etc. Is it just like running off my normal HD but all the files are kept on the external (so I could still access files thru itunes, etc.)?
Also, I would like to get a 500GB+ drive to keep my files on, and was wondering if people had recomendations. Brands, USB 2.0 or Firewire, etc.
Apologies if this is a novice question - but I can't seem to find answers anywhere.

Firstly, it is certainly possible to boot from an external drive, so what you plan is not only feasible, but since the external would be faster than the internal drive, also rather beneficial to the efficient running of the mini - meaning, the system will be notably faster in use.
In my view, the best option is an external firewire drive, not USB. The reason is that FW has it's own dedicated controller while USB doesn't. In effect, it means that FW data transfer speeds are stable and consistent, while USB rates vary widely, depending on what else the system is doing.
Once you have your external drive connected, the easiest way to make it bootable is to copy your existing MacOS install from the internal drive using software such as Carbon Copy Cloner (downloadable from www.versiontracker.com). This will avoid having to do a lengthy reinstall. Once MacOS is copied, then open System Preferences, and the Startup Disk preference pane, and click on the external drive icon. The next restart will then be directed to the external.
Once you have booted from the external drive, you use it just as you would an internal, and MacOS will treat it as the boot volume, including by default, placing your user account folders on it, including your documents, music etc.

Booting from USB external HDD on Satelite L30

Is it possible to boot winxp (pro, sp2) from external HDD case connected by USB?
Some previous topics suggest that it is not possible (officially), but one (http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=21996) says that it is. I have tried to search for mentioned method, but with no results (maybe because english is not my native language).
It is very important for me, and I would really appreciate if anyone could give me a hint.
Second question is about "plus" before HDD boot option in BIOS (Phenix afair). Is suggests it is possible to connect more then one disc - if so, then how? Inside laptop, of course, there is no additional room...

As the other threads already suggested its not possible to boot from the external USB HDD. You can boot from HDD, CD/DVD, FDD, LAN.
The external USB FDD can be connected to the notebook and you could boot into the dos from the diskette.
By the way; this notebook does not support select bay and you cannot insert a second HDD

All Apple Remote Desktop can do is point a system to a startup disk; it has no facility for providing a boot image. So you may want to ask this question in the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server forums. You'll be more likely to get suggestions there, though other than NetBoot I know of no way to boot a group of computers from a single disk image or DVD.

I explain I have for example an external box eSATA with a HDD and XP or Vista installed on it.

I test it with few desktop computes: It works with eSATA (but not with USB) and no risk to destroy or erase files! So is it idem with a laptop?

Booting from an external drive over usb

Hey, has anyone else had any problems booting from an external? I have an external lacie drive that I keep a clone backup on (using superduper) and usually have it connected with firewire400. I know it works because i've accidently booted using it before, but recently the firewire port on it died so i've been using usb instead.
Now the problem, holding option on my macbook starting, I get no options to choose from. If i have the mac osx dvd in, it pops up so I know it's not a problem with my macbook. It is possible to boot from usb correct? Everything i've read has said it's possible... I'm not sure why my external drive isn't coming up. I know it works over usb because I've used it alot since the firewire port died on it. I checked in the disk utility and it does say it's bootable, and afterall it's cloned using superduper like i said before...
I have 2 partitions on the drive, is that a problem? It never was before, I've booted off it many times before using firewire though. Can someone help me out here? Very annoying as I'm replacing the HD in my macbook and neeeeeeed to get on my external.
When I asked the guy at the genius bar awhile ago he just said it was probably a problem because my old internal HD died and he said sometimes it causes the macbook to not even be able to get as far as the point to boot from another source. Well now I have a new working drive in it, so I know that's not the problem. It just doesn't show up to boot from anymore, ugh.

Sounds like your clone isn't bootable. Have you tried the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Can I boot from an external Firewire drive?

I have restored my internal system drive (27GB) to a 100GB partition on a 300GB external FW drive (as a backup).
Using System preferences I changed the startup disk to be the clone & rebooted to test.
No start and the only way to get going again was to turn the FW drive off & reboot.
Is it possible to boot from a FW drive?
Should a drive as described be bootable?
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

After some trial & error (& little sleep last night) I have made some progress:
Further research suggested that:
1. there may be a hardware issue with my Ex FW case (it has a Prolific PL-3507 chip)
2. Tiger (10.4.x) behaves differently from Panther (10.3.x) and possibly different versions of Tiger may behave differently
Also I have previously successfully used DU to move my OS from a 30GB to 120GB disk (both internal drives) under 10.3.9. This disk will boot when placed in a ext FW case.
I concluded that under 10.3.9 at least my case was OK & Apple DU was OK when run from the boot volume.
I also checked the clone made using DU under 10.4.3 by taking the HDD out of the FW case & installing it internally in my Mac - it wouldn't boot so DU hadn't made a bootable clone - it was never going to boot internally or externally. Ever.
Next step - SuperDuper! - worked perfectly - backed up & booted no fuss, no worries.
This confirms that the Prolific PL-3507 chip will boot an external FW disk under OS X 10.4.3.
I then referred to Lee Cullens' posts as quoted by Matthew Whiting (with a link above in this topic).
Lee has the answer (at least for my hardware/software configuration). For Apple's DU to produce a bootable clone it cannot be run from the disk which is being cloned (ie 3 volumes are needed
1st to boot from & run DU from
2nd to be cloned (the vloume to be backed up)
3rd to be colned onto - the backup
I tried DU from the boot disk again to "prove" it wouldn't work. While it appeared to clone correctly Permissions were all messed up & after over an hour of "Repairing Permissions" I gave up. The volume wouldn't boot even though system preferences saw it as a bootable volume.
I then ran DU from another volume (the one made using SuperDuper!). After verification (but not repairing permissions as I didn't want to potentially waste another hour!) it booted fine from the ext FW drive. I did however uncheck "Ignore Ownership" after Cmd-I on the volume from the desktop.
I conclude:
My hardware is OK (& probably others who may have similar issues)
Apple DU can make a bootable clone which will work on an ext FW drive PROVIDING 3 volumes are used - boot with DU on, from & to. Suitable for a bootable backup but a bit fiddly ( also free & regularly updated by Apple)
SuperDuper does the same job with less fuss (don't need a CD or 3rd volume + other features). As noted by Matthew basic cloning is free but I think the shareware cost will be worthwhile ($US27.95)

Booting From An External DVD Burner

Hi,
My Parents' Leopard copy will arrive in a few days, and since the iMac G5's drive is dead, I was wondering if the install process will be possible from an external DVD drive device.
PS: I also have an iPod 30 gig (if it's impossible via the DVD drive, is it possible via the iPod?)

IMPORTANT: is it normal that when I boot from the external Drive (Firewire) the grey screen with the Apple (start up screen) remains static for a long time? (the loading "flower" doesn't show up) .
I need a reply please, because keeping the Mac on that start up screen would be stupid... if it's useless.

Satellite NB10t-A-101 refuses to boot from any external medium

I have just purchased an NB10t in the UK, and am trying to boot to a bootable USB
I have noticed the BIOS on this particular model is UEFI mode only, That in itself is not an issue as users can sign their own OS's with a CA and use them, however this laptop refuses to boot from any external medium...or even provide an error message.
I have changed the boot priorities in the BIOS and moved the USB to the top
I have disabled Secure Boot option in the BIOS
I have tried all 3 USB ports as well as 3 different drives (NOTE: THESE WORK FINE ON 3 OTHER SYSTEMS a dell laptop/desktop and an acer laptop)
I have also tried various distributions (Debian & Arch)
I have used multiple installation methods (Unetbootin/Full hard install/Rufus etc..)
I have tried all versions of your currently released BIOSs (Shipping with V1.0, Jan-V1.1 Feb-V1.2)
After trying all of these when pressing F12 at boot, the boot menu shows up but upon selecting a device the system continues to boot into the HDD (Win8)
After googling around I noticed you have released 2 BIOS updates I have tried all versions of these and still the system refuses to boot into my selected device
Can we expect any more firmware updates in the near future? Is there a way to workaround this issue to boot my chosen OS? Is there a CSM option?

I have been doing as much reading as possible about the bay-trail architecture etc

(I can't believe that to be the case) and we know for a fact that many Linux distributions support UEFI

Booting from an external optical drive (Liteon ETAU108-01 or other)

Dear Apple community,
I´m considering buying the external DVD writer "Liteon ETAU108-01" as a replacement for my broken MacBook Pro (2 Duo) super drive.
Does anybody know, if it is possible to boot from this specific USB drive (eg. using DVDs with MacOS or DiskWarrior)? Or can I generally boot from any external optical DVD drive?
I´m also happy for recommendation of alternative DVD drives which would allow booting my Mac in an emergency.

I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?

BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's partition table entries. Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice. That one had to be done first or not at all.
