Portege 3500 - 512MB memory modules lead to error

Hallo,
I tried to upgrade the memory in my P3500.
currently there is 1 256MB module installed in the slot beneath the keyboard.
I purchased 2x 512MB SO-DIMM PC133 ram modules, but both lead to errors / BIOS-beeps. I tried different combinations:
keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: empty
--> long short
keyboard-slot: empty
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short short
keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: 256
--> long short
keyboard-slot: 256
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short short
keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short (pause) long short short
This sounds as if the bios refuses the 512mb modules
I guess the beeps mean:
long short - keyboard-slot ram refusal
long short short - bottom-slot ram refusal
but according to the manual it should be possible to install 1 or 2 512mb modules. What am I doing wrong?
Do I need a BIOS update? (currently installed: "ACPI BIOS 1.20")
If only a new BIOS supports 512mb modules - is there a possbility to upgrade the bios from unix?
(the only BIOS download I found on the Toshiba support pages unfortunately just works for windows)
Help would be much appreciated...

Yes, you can upgrade your 3500 up to 1024 mb memory ( 2 x 512 mb ) but only with the right modules
You need *16 x 32 ( 16 chip architecture )* PC133 , 3,3v sdram modules ( 144 pins so-dimm )
I fear that your 512 mb modules are not compatible :-( you can count the chips on the module, there should be 8 chips on both sides of the module

  • Memory module Installation error

    Hi HP team,
My notebook is HP Pavilion dv6-6169er  P.N. QC800EA. Memory is actually 6GB (2GB+4GB). Once I tried to install memory modules myself. The problem is that the system does not boot when I turn on the laptop. CAPS LOCk button blinks 3 times and the screen appears to be black.  When I insert only one memory card, laptop boots well. This is valid for any combination of RAMs. Both RAMs and both slots work well (I verified this by inserting every single RAM to single slot). However, the laptop does not boot only when there is BOTH memory modules inserted. Please, could you help me fix this and install  both RAMs to get full 6GB?

Are both memory sticks the same brand and type?

  • Edge Technologies memory modules keep getting error codes on AHT test

I received a brand new replacement chip set (1GB/2 512s) directly from Edge Technologies. I ran an Apple Hardware Test on the machine just to make sure everything checked, and again received an error on the new chips. I tried all kinds of configurations and tests to make sure it wasn't an issue with the slots or the motherboard and kept getting an error on the same chips (the new one just sent me - item APLPMG5001GPC3200). Could it be a compatibility issue of some kind? I have 3 other sets of chips, all different manufacturers and they test fine every time.
I did notice they all have a "CL 3" code on them, where as the Edge brand does not. I've been in touch with tech support with Edge, and they seem to be stumped as well.

Hi Allan - Thanks for writing. I only have the original Apple Hardware Test version 2.1 disk, the same that originally came with the computer. I was wondering if I should try to get a newer version - or if one even exists that is compatible with my computer.
    Hi ratbastage;
You asked; "Could it be my Hardware test disks

  • 3 memory modules?!?!

I'm currently using two 512MB memory modules in dual channel. i want to add more ram to my machine, but i want to keep the pieces that i currently use. so my question is, can i add one more module (1 GB) so that i will have a total of three modules (2GB), or adding the third module will cause instabilities and i should stick with even number of modules (2 or 4)?

it will probably not work in dual channel mode, if your cpu is smart enough to drop back to single channel mode it might work but you'll lose performance...
afaik there is no option to force single channel on that board, so if your system tries to run dual channel mode on that combination it's almost surely in for some memory errors...

  • Has the duff memory module screwed my MB

    I have a Neo2 Platimum AMD64 3200+ (standard heatsink)
    Memory is Corsair CMX512-3200XLPT (2.2.2.5)
    2x 512Mb twinX
Everything has been working fine for the last 2 weeks, but this morning the PC died
I was getting memory initialisation errors on the LED's
So I've now tested each memory module in turn in each of the dimm sockets.
                Skt1(P)      Skt2(G)     Skt3(P)    Skt4(G)
Dim 1      FAIL         WORK        FAIL        WORK
Dim 2      FAIL         FAIL           FAIL        FAIL
So It look's like the MB is broken and the memory too.
Could the memory module have stuffed up the Motherboard ?
The memory controller is on the CPU, could that have been affected ?
Has anyone else had this sort of problem ?
    Andy Cooper

Not having any spare DDR memory I purchaced 128Mb dimm (PC2700) and proceeded to test the slots.
It worked in skt 2 and 4 (same as the working corsair memory module).
So I definitly have a fault on the motherboard and it also looks like I have a fault on one of the corsair dimms.
So either the MB killed the dimm or visa versa.
Looks like 2 RMA's in the offing

  • K7Turbo MS-6330 & Radeon 7000 & Geforce 4 440SE & 512MB Memory

Please help I have an MSI K7Turbo and have just added 256 SDRAM on top of my 512 and then tried to install an ATI Radeon 7000 Graphics card. I t all loaded up ok , I thought excellant then after a minute I get a blue screen with an error and have to reboot. Then nothing starts up, blank screen. So I remove the 256 SDRAM and reboot, Graphics card isn't happy so have to reinstall that, then it works. So then I thought I would shutdown and add the 256 SDRAM, only to find it does not work and have to go through it again and run with just 512 SDRAM.This means my 256 SDRAM sits on the side looking very much retired. Why is this happeing, the motherboard says it takes upto 1.5GB of DRAM. So then I found out the Radeon doesn't work if you have more than 512MB, so I bought a Geforce 4 440SE and thought all my problems would go away, nope they were the same, none of these cards work with more than 512MB SDRAM......please someone tell me why
Someone is ripping us off and Im about to loose my patience.HELP HELP HELP SOS SOS

First time I hear Radeon 7000 doesn't work with more than 512 Mb. memory.-
It has sence if you'r using Windows 98 or 98 se O/S. If not most probably is a compatibility memory problem, or a faulty 256 Memory Module. If you are using other O/S than W.98 try 256 Memory alone to see if it works.- Generally speaking is not good idea to mix difs memory brands.-

  • K7T, memory modules and slowness

    Bonjour à tous.
That’s the first time I post… It’s hard for me to write in english…
My motherboard is K7T Turbo (MS-6330). I have two problems :
    1. I have three memory modules : 256 MB, 128 MB and 64 MB. All three are 133 MHz speed.
The memory test of  Norton Utilities indicates alwys an error at  an address about 356888576 (the address is not always the same, but always greater or equal than the one I wrote above.
 When just one of these three memory modules is used, the memory test is always OK (any module plugged in any socket)
 The test is also always OK with the two modules 256 an 64 MB,
 Also OK with the two modules 128 and 64 MB,
 But it is Always failed with the two modules 256 and 128 MB.
Here is my conclusion : my K7T Turbo has a problem « addressing the memory in the space around the address 356888576 and above ».
    356888576 is 1545B000 in hexadecimal. 256 MB + 128 MB = 18000000 (hexa) is the only combination of my memory modules that goes ahead 1545B000 (256 MB + 64 MB = 10400000)
Do you think my motherboard is guilty ?
    2. The Memory Bandwidth Benchmark of  SiSoftware Sandra 2002 gives me a result about 895 MB/s.
The result is the same with one, two or the three memory modules. And It seems to me very low.
Is it possible to obtain better ? Is it necessary to upgrade the BIOS (my version is 2.9) ?

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • Changing memory modules in Satellite M30X-165

The Notebook has two memory modules with 512 MB each module. I have received a used 1 GB module.
Can I remove one of the 512 MB modules and install the 1 GB module to get total 1,5 GB RAM or need both modules the same memory size?

According notebook specification you can upgrade your machine up to 2GB of RAM so you can use one 1GB RAM and one module with 512MB. Important is that you use 100% compatible memory modules.
Just for your info: compatible PC2700 1GB memory module has part number PA3313U-1M1G.
Make upgrade, test it and post some feedback.

  • MEMORY MODULES EMPTY !!

After mega-research I replaced my damaged hard drive myself, (the original had had a 512mb memory upgrade & was running Tiger fine) However, now System Profiler shows the module as empty, I bought another which has done the same. Naturally, with only the built in 218mb, I can only install 10.3.9. & cannot use my 10.4 back-up La Cie external firewire drive. What could cause memory modules to do this ? I exercise extreme caution all the time, so am heartbroken, as am disabled & still paying for it.
Please someone tell me what is happening.........!!!

Are you certain about the Apple RAM only being covered for two years? Have you called about it?
You may be able to find RAM here:
    http://ramseeker.com/scripts/sortModelDetails.php?modelId=1&sortSize=512mb
You'll have to check on details of the various firms to find one that has RAM available in the UK.
MacUpgrades lists RAM in the UK here:

  • Experiences mixing DDR memory modules

Would you people post here experiences mixing DDR memory modules in order to help me/others take buying decisions?
I currently have a PC2100 256MB Samsung module and a MSI KT266 PRO2 and want to buy a new module.
As I  cannot find one similar to the one I already own want to assign a success likelihood before taking my decision.
    Thanks in advance Gustavo.-

Had a similar problem afew week's ago. I've got 2 identical stick's of 256Mb Samsung original DDR333 Cas 2.5, decided to upgrade to 1Gb and bought a stick of 512Mb Geil DDR333 (GL2000 Chips) Cas 2.5 for 45 quid. Installed the Geil in slot 2 (with the samsung sticks in slots 0 and 1) booted up o.k
bio's and windows detected the ram just fine.
After rebuilding the windows page file I started to test the extra ram by running 3dmark 2001 but kept getting  BSOD's (Irq's less then..., Page faults in non ...etc) mid way through the test's. I went in to the bio's and relaxed the ram timing's to spd, no change. Increased the ram voltage's, no change.
So I thought I'd do a fresh install of windows, but 3/4 of the way through copying the files off the windows cd I kept getting 'can't copy xxxx file from the cd', tried cleaning the cd, tried a backup cd same problem, took the samsung memory out and just put the Geil stick in slot 0, the system wouldn't even boot, but with the samsung stick's in on there own window's installed o.k. I tried the Geil stick in another system, which booted up without a hitch. So finaly I just took the Geil stick out and gave it back, the suppliers tested it and found it to be o'k and charged me 20 quid for the privalage, Ba%&!%@s.
Last week I borrowed a stick of 512Mb Twinmos DDR333, same problem's as the Geil. Seem's like they don't make them like they used to and I'm doomed to 512Mb with this board.

  • Bad memory modules or motherboard??

I rearranged the cables in my case and now I'm not able to boot using dual channel memory configuration. It worked before just fine!
I've got two 512MB twinmos twister pc3500 modules.
D-bracket indicates bad memory module if I try to setup dual channel using dimm 1 and dimm 3. I've tried other dual channel combinations with the same result.
I can only boot using dimm 1! using the other slots get me the bad memory module status on the d-bracket. I've tested both mem modules in slot 1 and I am able to boot so it seems the mem modules are OK. Or are they OK for just single channel config?
Do I have a faulty motherboard or are the memory modules bad?
    MSI 865PE neo2 fisr rev 1.00
    2x512MB twinmos twister pc3500

Christ! what is it with these MSI boards?
The 2 848P's i tried both worked fine with a single 512mb strip in, but put another in and the D Bracket Light 2 stays and the PC fails to boot or reboot properly - it's totally hit n miss.
See my thread for the unbelievable amount of problems i've had with the 848P! :
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=31192&sid=
I'm RMA'ing both 848P's as i've tried everything, now even the forum moderators say rma the boards so i know its nothing trivial happening here... They're even going to get MSI to look at my thread - so hopefully they will take notice!
Am i to take it that the 865 also has similar problems, ffs!
Is there a stable MSI mobo available that will take 2 DDR's sticks or not?

  • What's the right memory module for an iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch?

    Hello!
A new program I've recently bought requires me to expand my iMac's memory, which is currently 256 MB.
After searching the Apple Store web site, I think I've come to the conclusion that what I need is an Apple memory module called "512MB DDR266 SO-DIMM (PC2100), 200-pin". As I don't know any expert who can give me some advice, and as I'm no expert myself, could anyone please tell me if that's right?
    Thank you!
    iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ciao e benvenuto alle discussioni di Apple.
There are actually 3 different types of user slot installable RAM for the iMac G4 models so you'll have to check what your processor speed is (Go to  Apple Menu > About this Mac > ):
    iMac G4 15" and 17" 700 or 800MHz, PC133 144pin SODIMM.
    iMac G4 17" 1GHz, PC2100 200pin SODIMM
    iMac G4 1GHz 15" or 1.25GHz 17"/20", PC2700 200pin SODIMM.
So although I can't tell you exactly what RAM you need I can tell you that if you have a 15" screen the PC2100 is wrong.
I'd advise using Crucial memory in Europe as the prices are amongst the best and they are Mac friendly. I wouldn't recommend Apple memory; it's overpriced. I also wouldn't advise buying a cheap brand as it could cause trouble.
    Here are the fitting instructions.

  • 10.4.2 not recognizing extra memory module

I upgraded recently to 10.4.2, and now one of my memory modules is not recognized. the machine has the original 512M chip in the upper slot, but the 512M chip in the lower slot is not recognized. in the system profiler under hardware/diagnostics, i get:

    Result:     Failed
    Failure type:     Memory
    Memory slot:     SODIMM0/J25LOWER
anyone have any idea what's going on??? thx.

"However, I have another problem in that there is no startup chime on my machine, and hasn't been for a while"
Same problem with my PowerBook G4 - 1.5GHz - 512MB, only since the chime problem (not hearing it any more) has the problem with not recognizing the lower memory slot. Not certain if the two problems are related. So it seems from the discussions hear there are two solutions, $600 to repair, or purchase more memory to run in the upper slot. I do have to agree that it would be futile in my opinion to pay for the repair if the same problem emerges again, (as has been reported, at least in the forums,) meaning it could cost $1200 to fix (maybe).
"I think that terming the logic board, "fried" overstates the issue. In fact, the logic board itself is probably in good working order, thus its ability to report on the state of the lower RAM slot. The real issue is the quality of the connection from the lower slot to the logic board--essentially a bad solder. This connection can't be resoldered, so the logic board needs to be replaced."
This statement actually makes more sense then anything I have read so far.

It shouldn't cost you a fortune, John.  I usually find Apple re-sellers very obliging on matters like this.  Where did you buy your memory from?   If it was Apple retail they may help and explain about the residue at the same time.
It's not unusual to meet difficulties with the fitting of memory but the residue is something I haven't met before.
