Hi,
Picked up a Portege 7200 running XP dirt cheap, it's currently got 128Mb RAM which I want to replace with a 256Mb, where the hell can I find one that isn't priced the same as a new laptop???
Thanks!

Hi
The notebook is an oldie and all parts devices are also not more highly available!
The notebook supports 144-Pin PC100 SODIMM memory modules.
I found one module for about 63

  • Running iTunes7 on a 800Mhz iMac G4 (256mb Ram)

    Hi,
    i have an iMac G4 Flat panel (800Mhz-256mb Ram) and after hearing some people complaining on these boards of not being able to run iTunes7 properly on macs with a similar spec as mine i have decided for the time being not to upgrade from iTunes6.
    Is there anyone on here who is running iTunes7 successfully with less than a 1Ghz. What limitations can i expect from iTunes7 on my iMac.
    Thanks

    I'm sure you will benefit by adding more RAM.
    It will decrease disk access, which slows down the system.
    About Cover Flow:
    The first time I used it, it behaved rather slow and jerky.
    Of course iTunes had to get all the artwork from the song files, which meant a lot of disk activity.
    iTunes then stores the albumart in .itc files in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes/album artwork/Local.
    I guess this is done for faster access of the pictures.
    The next time, I slowly flipped through Cover Flow to enable iTunes to pick up all artwork.
    This morning, when I ran iTunes, and browsed through Cover Flow, it behaved somehow jerky (a lot of disk access), but after that it worked rather smooth.
    I could only hear occasional disk access, so iTunes must have stored most pictures in RAM.
    One more thing. I recently replaced the HD by a larger and faster one (200 GB Maxtor) which also speeds things up (reading/writing at least twice as fast than the 'old' drive). That also helps a bit.
    Long story short:
    Add more RAM. I'm sure you will not be disappointed by that investment.

    Green is a marketing term for a drive designed for lower power use, lower noise, and lower heat. The side effect is that it's not as fast. Black drives are designed for highest performance, so they might use more power and run hotter and noisier. I upgraded my Apple Time Capsule with a green drive, but I put a black drive in my Mac Pro.

    7200 RPM drives are faster than 5400 RPM drives.
    As in cars, RPM is not the sole determinant of performance. In some cases, a newer drive at a lower RPM is faster than an older drive at a higher RPM, when the newer drive uses better technology. I have heard that some of today's high-capacity 5400RPM drives are faster than 7200RPM drives of lower capacity simply because the very high density of a 1TB drive means more data passes under the head even at a lower RPM. Certainly there have been times in Apple's past when new lower RPM drives were faster than higher RPM drives of the previous generation, a notable example being when 4200RPM perpendicular recording drives were introduced and beat 5400RPM drives.
    Yes, generally RPM can be used to compare, but it is important to realize it isn't always true.

  • Running Appserver 9.1 with 256mb ram?

    Hi there,
    i tried to install the Appserver 9.1 on a machine with only 256mb ram. I think thats the cause why starting the server results in:
    Error occurred during initialization of VM
    Could not reserve enough space for object heap
    Could not create the Java virtual machine.Is there somewhere an option to set the heapsize down, so that the server can start?
    (I know that the minimum requirement is 512mb ram, but performance doesn't matter in this case)

    You will need an OS 9.1 or higher full installer CD. You may find them on eBay or at FastMac.com. Be sure to get a full retail installer CD, not an upgrade disc.
    You can install OS 9 directly on the hard drive without disturbing your OS X installation. Just be careful to avoid any alerts from the installer asking to format or check the hard drive. If you see such alerts (and you will) during installation simply skip or cancel them.
    Now, your hard drive must have been formatted with the Install Mac OS Drivers option checked when you partitioned the drive if you want to boot OS 9 directly. This is not required to use Classic from OS X.

  • Portege 7200 does not use full display

    Have loaded windows 98SE onto portege 7200 (model number PP720E-6390W-EN) and cannot get the display to use full screen.
    I have downloaded display-win9x-650554022icd driver but there is no '.exe' file to initiate the installation. Any ideas?
    cheers

    Hi,
    what a kind of file was there? Maybe an *.inf file? If a such and *.inf file is existent then everything is alright. Just go to the device manager and to the graphics device,
    go to install new driver and then when windows is asking for an driver, just define the folder where the drivers are as the driver destination.
    Windows should take the driver and install it.

  • 256mb RAM

    I have 256mb RAM, it is too slown as you can Imagine...I didn't know ...
    1) how much ram does the operating sistem that came with the mac take...?
    2) I would like to change it to more ram:
    a) can I ad ram to my 256 or do I have to get a new one of 512 or 1gb?
    b)how much would it cost me512or 1gb?
    c)can I order it in the apple store and put it in myself? (PS: I don't care if that takes me off the one year garncy because I bought it in the US and I live in Italy)
    thank you.

    Tiger doesn't require a specific amount of RAM - it generally tailors use to the amount available. The less RAM installed in the system the more it uses virutal memory, an area of the hard driver set aside for 'pages' that MacOS moves from real RAM to virtual store and then back again. Since access to data on the hard drive is slower than from memory, this means that the less RAM the system has installed, the slower it will tend to run because more of what MacOS needs will come from paged store on the drive than from RAM.
    How much memory you need depends on what you're doing. Most users find 512Mb entirely satisfactory, but if you're using applications such as Photoshop, more would certainly be better.
    You can't 'add' more memory - the mini has only one RAM slot, which means that the stick you have in there at present will need to be removed and replaced.
    Since you're happy to do the RAM install yourself, you might try looking at www.crucial.com or www.newegg.com for RAM prices - from such sources a 1Gb stick would cost little more than an Apple-sourced 512Mb module. Just make sure that whatever supplier you buy from will exchange the RAM if you have any problems with it.

  • Successful install of 8.1.7 on Solaris 8 with more than 256Mb RAM

    To all who have struggled with this one, like me. You owe me a bottle of Rogaine.... but I will accept a bottle of Jack instead.
    It appears that the kernel parameters published in the Install Guide are only good for Solaris 8 with up to 256Mb RAM
    If dbassist craters at around 80% in OUI with a "Can't connect to Oracle" and you have more than 256Mb on board
    DOUBLE the kernel parameters !!!
    shmmni = 200
    shmseg = 20
    semmns = 400
    semmni = 200
    semmls =200
    semopm =200
    touch /reconfigure (they don't mention that in the Guide)
    reboot
    If someone out there can isolate which actual damn kernel parameter is the culprit, I will gladly share some Jack with you.
    Otherwise an email to [email protected] with a comment or three will suffice.
    Cheers

    Sorry to ask a dumb question, but want to be precise, whn you say touch/reconfigure, do you mean touch system.
    WHat is the reconfigure?

  • Portege 7200 multiple problems

    Hello,
    This is my last ditch attempt to try and get some sort of fix for my Portege 7200.
    I will try and explain the best I can, so here goes.
    I had a dual boot system (Linux & Win98), did not want Linux anymore so formated HD and re-installed Win98.
    Everything is working except for a few problems which I hope you guys can help with.
    1. On startup (before windows logon) I get prompted with cannot find VREDIR.VXD along with some other VXD files.
    2. Screen display does not like the Trident Cyberblade e4-128 PCI/AGP adaptor. Only installed the driver as was following instuction on the Toshiba tools and utilities cd-rom. Keep get prompted to change my display setting on startup. Once logged into windows the screen does not fit the whole monitor (black border). Have used the companion disk one receives with the Portege to stretch the LCD screen. The screen is bigger but quality of display is poor.
    Can anyone help on anyone of the point above as I am at a loss.
    Kind regards
    Joe
    P.s. If there is anymore clarification or info needed then pls let me know and i'll try my best to obtain it.

    Hi,
    have you observed the installation order for Windows 98 (SE) ?
    * Installation Information for Windows 98SE
    o INF-Update
    o Quick Fix Engineering
    o Displaydriver
    o Direct X
    o Sound-Driver
    o Toshiba Companion Disc
    o Toshiba Modem Driver
    o Toshiba Infrared Driver
    o Mousedriver
    o LAN-Driver
    o DVD Software
    It could be possible that some Functions can't be used or some Drivers can't be installed if not all INF-Updates and Quick Fix Engineering successfully installed.

  • DVD-RAM drive from G4 AGP in the MacPro?

    Just bought a new MacPro. I would like to move my DVD-RAM drive from my trusty old Sawtooth to the MacPro. I have a lot of old Type I cartridges with archived data on them that I would like to keep using, but on the new machine, since my husband is wanting me to give him the G4. The DVD_RAM Type1 cartridges are like "monster" ZIP disks and really convenient and dependable for backups.
    An Apple Tech Support rep said it would "probably" work on the MacPro, but that I should post the question on the Forums as well, to see what others had to say. Any takers?
    Also, if there is a new drive I could purchase that would accommodate the Type I cartridges and technology, I'd be interested in that information. I did research on these kinds of drives for my G4 some months ago, but found it hard to determine if there was a new "Superdrive" style drive with this capability.

    I had to look up PATA and found info at http://www.directron.com/patasata.html to be very informative.
    I know that my hard drives use a connector that looks like the parallel connectors in these photos. I'm not sure about the optical drives, because I've never had a reason to take them out or change them until now. I'll have to look inside and see.
    They do talk in this article about the bulk of PATA connectors being more significant than the new serial ATA connectors. Considering the comments shared by "the hatter" that could be a problem. I'll check this out in the next couple of days and see is any hindrances regarding space come to light.
    I'd still like to know if there is a new optical drive out there somewhere that could provide a DVD-RAM (Type I cartridge and newer formats) option for the MacPro. I hope someone can share some knowledge about that.
    Thanks for your comments Ned and hatter.

  • Portege 7200 doesn't recognize external memory

    I had downloaded Windows XP on my Portege 7200 (with 256 MB external memory) and it worked well. Suddenly, it started overheating and was extremely sluggish. I reformatted the disk, downloaded XP again and it appears to work well, even though slowly;
    however it refuses to acknowledge the extrernal memory and appears to be working with the 64 MB internal memory only.
    Is this an external memory (hardware) port problem or can I do something to fix this?

    Hi
    I have the same problem with a portege 7220.
    I took out the 64MB Module and replaced it with a 256 MB Module. First it worked, but suddenly it did not recognized the module anymore. Even if I put back the old 64 MB module the bios only recognizes the built in 64 MB.
    I tried to update the bios, but this did not worked as well. The system does not access the floppy disk in the docking station.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks
    Walter

  • Total row count - where from is that value?

    Hi,
    I need the value of total row count that is displayed at the button of portal report. I need this value to use in my java script.
    Is that value somewhere in database? Maybe any variable or hidden form element on the page?
    Where from does the portal know when to show only the previous button and when both next and previous? It must by calucated somehow.
    Thanks in advance.
    best regards

    Thanks. Just to make clear:
    Probelm:
    I need to display links to pages with part of results at the bottom of page - just like in discussion group: Pages: [1] [2] [3] ....
    Solution:
    I know that there is a hidden form on every report rendered by portal. In that form there are several elements like:
    pagenumer, minrow and maxrows. Updating these elements I can jump to every page with results.
    Total row count problem:
    The problem is that I don't know the number of pages. If I had a total row count value I would calculate the number of pages and create links only to existing pages.
    best regards

  • Can I put the 2Gb RAM (X2) from my MacBook Pro into my MacBook 5,1? The intel is different (2Ghz not 2.3) and the speed is 1067 not 1333. But they are both DDR3.

    Can I put the 2Gb RAM (X2) from my MacBook Pro into my MacBook? The intel is different (2Ghz not 2.3) and the speed is 2000 not 1333. But they are both DDR3.
    I have just upgraded the Pro to 16Gb and the MacBook is SO slow. Just wondering if I could use the old RAM.

    Full specification of MB5.1 RAM;
    204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM, non-ECC (non parity), unbuffered.
    MBP8.1, 8.2 or 8.3;
    204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM, non-ECC (non parity), unbuffered.
    PC3 is the same as DDR3. the number is peak transfer rate (approximated).
    Further reading suggests your swap may work, but it's not guaranteed. If you get 3 beeps on start up (or the sleep light flashing in bursts of 3), first check it's correctly seated, but be prepared to swap them back.
    If you encounter any instability or kernel panics, change them back.
