Portege 7220 and windows 98. Black screen during installation

Hi,
I am facing the following problem when I am trying to install win98 on the above machine Portege 7220 (/PIII650/64/12/13t/M), on its docking station ...
I boot from a diskete and I access the cd rom (e:\) in order to run windows 98SE setup. After I type e:\setup.exe I get a black screen and the computer freezes. However I can install windows NT or 2000 on the this machine, and moreover the windows 98SE cd runs ok on other computers, i.e. no black screen!!!!
Any idea what is wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Bar

Hi Bar
Please don`t be mad on me but I must ask you something. Do you use Win98SE full version or just update CD for Win98?
It can be that your CD is scratched! So please try another CD again or another OS like W2k!

Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 - Apple Support
I have followed each of the steps listed in the link above with no success.
Prior to adding the extra drivers I was able to start the Windows install process up to reformatting the "Windows" Bootcamp drive. After that the computer would go through some instal processes and eventually restart. After the restart the screen would go black. The black screen lead me to the  Apple Support link above dated March 5 2015. After going through steps listed in the link above, I get an error message stating that the D:\Sources\instal.win. file cannot be located. I am forced to restart the computer at that point and theWindows install process attempts to start again but always ends up at the same point.
Note: I am installing windows 7 Pro from a DVD. I scanned the AutoUnattend.xml file and noticed that it refers to "Windows 7 ULTIMATE" but not "Pro" or any others that I could see. (see below). Could that be part of the issue?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The File .wim will contains a compressed image which contains File [1...5].
The W7-Ultimate .clg will have 5 entries, with all set to 'Y'.
The W7-Professional .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','Y','Y'.
The W7-Home Premium  .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','Y'.
The W7-Home Basic .clg file will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','N'.
This allows a single .wim Image file on the DVD media to be used to install any of the 5 flavors of Windows. When you enter your product key, the Installer knows what specific W7 variant you have the key for and will tell the WIM to extract the specific files the installer needs to be extracted.
    The following line
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
is telling that a retail product key will be entered, which should go look for this specific .clg file (from the five you already have on disk).  You can test if it will work for you by changing this line to the following
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
If it does not work, the other issue can be related to device discovery. Typically A: and B: device names are reserved for Floppy Drives. C: is your internal HDD.
D: can either point to the Optical drive, or the USB. The normal convention is that the removable media is named from Z: backwards. Y: and Z: are usually used for Network drives, so X: should be your USB. First try with the change to "Professional". If it does not work,

  • Raid-0 K7N2 and Windows XP Black Screen

:confused2:I just bought a Sil 0680 card and installed it with 2 WDC 80gb hard drives (one with 8mb buffer other with 2mb buffer).
Windows xp installs fine if I leave them as individual sets, but when I make a RAID-0 array, it will detect the drive at 160gb, format it, copy the installation files, but when it reboots to start the installation it hangs on a black screen.
    Any ideas?
Does MSI not support SIL 0680?
    Thanks,
    tim

Ok if you notice my last comment i said i installed the drivers using f6.
I am able to get to the Blue windows screens to setup the partitions and select where windows is installed.  It also copies the setup files to the drive and says hit enter to restart.  Once I restart (and yes SCSI is first), it posts, then goes black then eventually reboots.
Are you saying hit F6 a second time?  I am never prompted to do so, only black screen.
I have installed SCSI and RAID drives MANY MANY times for 2000 server and 2003 server.  Just never on XP.  I would assume its the same though.  I am wondering if the Sil0680 chip is not compatible with nforce2 or this mobo.

  • New mac Mini 2011/lion Windows 7 black screen at installation

    Hi,
I'm switching to Mac and finally got the new mini i5 2.5Ghz and I'm trying to install W7 professional.
I'm using an external USB dvd r/w unit (a samsung)
In bootcamp i was able to create the driver disk and repartition the existing hard drive in two halfs of 256GB each
But when bootcamp assistant restarts the mini in order to boot from the windows installation disc, I just get a black screen and the W7 installer does not boot,
At that point neither the 32 nor the 64 bit version of W7 boots. The screen simply remains black.
I can boot from the os x partition (keeping the option key pressed unitl the boot disk selection cames out), and Lion works, but any attempt to boot from the dvdrom with w7 fails.
Anyone else encountered this issue and can help ?
    Thanks!

    Go to http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst118DriverPreview.aspx
and install the ATI 11.8 preview drivers.
Once installed, open the catalyst Control center (you should have a red icon in the notification tray)
and in one of the settings there is an "overscan" setting.
you should see a slider, position it to "0%" and you should have full screen.
For some reason the overscan defautl setting is set at -15%, hence the black bars.
I spent quite a lot of time on this, mainly because the bootcamp ATI drivers did not have any setting page I could find. I then installedd the official 11.7 drivers, but I could not get the Catalist Control Center to show up, not sure why.
Finally after reading forums for hours I gave the 11.8 a try, as it seems thare are some improvements (but mostly performances) for the HD 6xxx graphics cards, then finally it worked and i could access the overscan settings.
You may want to try first to see if you have the overscan setting before installing any new drivers.
    Hope this helps

  • Black screen during installation of xp

    Hello, everyone~~
I am trying to install win xp sp2 with bootcamp. The disk partition under Mac OS was successful. But after a system reboot, the windows installer fails to load normally. A blue screen just appears and vanishes very fast following by a black screen, with a flashing crusor. Then nothing responses and I have to restart by turning off the power supply. I tried many times but still failed to load the windows installer. Does anyone has such experience? Any help or information will be much appreciated~~
    Thanks a lot.

The monitor supports both VGA and DVI-D. I was using DVI-D.
On a hunch, I slapped a DVI-D/VGA adapter on the back of the Mini and swapped in a VGA cable.
Suddenly, I got the disk formatting screen I expected instead of the black screen.

  • Black screen during installation of XP on Mini

I'm trying to install XP 32 SP2 onto the kids' Mini running 10.6.4.
Disk partitioning goes fine, booting from the XP CD goes fine, the installer's first blue screen comes up just fine, I watch the usual seven tons of drivers load in the status bar at the bottom of the screen, and then... The screen goes black. I was expecting the usual questions about how to format the partition, but instead... nothing.
    Any ideas?

  • Arghhh NOW WHAT? Black screen during installation of iLife

I'm about to pitch this G4 Powerbook! HDD died not long ago. I replaced it and couldn't find my Leopard disc. Just two weeks ago I had it in my hand! So I installed Tiger until I could find the newer cat.
    Back story...
This machine was taken apart by a facility specializing in data recovery after the HDD died. I opted not to do the restore for financial reasons (would have been $1000) and I had backed the machine up recently enough. They gave the machine back to me, with RAM, old HDD, screws etc in a bag since I said I'd do the install of a new HDD.
I installed the HDD yesterday and Tiger. I have two memory chips installed, a 1GB in the lower and a 256 in the top. Computer is working fine yesterday and this morning. At one point while watching a youtube video the screen goes dark as if going to sleep. I move the cursor and it wakes up.
So I'm trying to figure out how I get Leopard back on the machine now that it is no longer in stores. Reading Discussions I learn Snow Leopard box set might be my only option but my machine requires Intel processor. I check "About this computer" for processor details and see the machine is not recognizing the 1GB memory chip. (BTW no Intel, so Snow Leopard is not an option.)
I open it up and swap slots and check again. Now the machine does not see the 256. Bad lower slot? Oh well I still have 1GB for the time being, on to building apps back up on the machine, I deal with that later.
I forget that iPhoto is not part of the OS so I grab my iLife '08 and stick it in to do install, get past the agreement page, tell it where to install etc and hit install. I walk away to check one last place the Leopard might be. Sweet! I find it and return to find the Powerbook screen dark and I can't wake it up. Fan is running, I'm tapping keys etc. Fan finally stops and it's still sleeping. I force it to shut down by holding power button down. I hit the power button and while its booting up I hear two or three loud beep tones, the indicator light on the latch blinks intermittently but the screen remains dark.
    Now what?

I hit the power button and while its booting up I hear two or three loud beep tones, the indicator light on the latch blinks intermittently but the screen remains dark.
What you're hearing is a POST (Power On Self Test) error. The beeps/blinking light mean:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
You can try swapping memory again. If you know the memory you're using is good, and you still get the POST error, that usually means it's new logic board time.

  • The Windows 7 Black Screen Issue

I am putting in Bootcamp with a Windows 7 install. I checked these forums and made sure I had all my prep work done.
I referenced article TS3173 and downloaded the neccessary drivers for 7, formatted a 16GB SD Card as FAT Bootable and copied the drivers and autounattend.xml files onto the root of the drive.
THe installation as going as planned but at the end I'm still ending up with a black screen. Windows is installed ok but on the restart after" Preparing for FIrst Use" comes up the screen goes black.
Obviously, the drivers are not being installed from the SD card, I tried it on a USB External driver as well. Am I missing something here? I read every post I could find on it and I can't see where I am doing anything incorrectly.
    Thanks
    Tom

You don't need Paragon or another NTFS driver. That may work (I've used it, but I was using a full hard drive anyway to begin with).

    Hello masinic2,
I understand that just recently you started getting freezing and a black screen during game play and are looking to resolve it. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7), which will walk you through restoring your computer back to a point in time where you did not have this issue. This will not affect your personal files, but it will affect any applications you have installed or settings you have changed between now and the time you restore back to. You will have to reinstall or redo the changes that are undone during that time frame.
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!

  • Black screen during windows 7 install on mac mini

I have a mac mini 2013.  Trying to install windows 7 via usb iso file.  downloaded iso file to mac mini desktop from windows supported site.  This is a 30 trial that can be installed after 30 with a genuine key, which I plan on buying.  8 gb usb stick.  dloaded latest updates for OS and bootcamp.  Ran bootcamp.  pointed to iso file.  partitioned 200GB fro windows 7 home version.  clicked advanced and formatted disk for bootcamp..(  load driver was also available, what is that??)
checked ALL 3 options BTW.  It expands and loads files every time and gets to install select lang...etc.  then computer restarts and hangs at black screen.  caps and num lock light up when pressed, no other response.  I can boot to safe mode in Windows but it say it has to return to normal mode to finish install, which then returns me to black screen.  I can reboot to white apple screen with disk options and choose usb drive and it says loading files, then goes back to starting windows, windows logo appears, then black screen and just sits there have waited 30 minutes and nothing.  I have read this could be a graphics driver issue? If so is there a way to force the support drivers to load, and how?  this is for my Son and we have tried for a couple months with no luck, does the trial version have anything to do with it?  I would pay for a windows 7 iso file download but no luck.
