Portege M400 screen deforms at center when writing

Hi
When writing on or near the center of the screen the image at the center of the screen deforms somewhat, like when touching a normal lcd screen and the screen colours change. It does not take much pressure to do this. Is this typical behaviour for a tablet pc although I would expect this not to be the case?
Thanks
Rivaaj

Hello
It is not typical and there must be some explanation. On this way it is not easy to say why this happen but I presume that there is some mechanical problem and can not be because of software. I am also sure that just investigation by technician can give you answer why this happen.
Please contact them and explain the situation. The addresses you can find under http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_gaspLocator.jsp?pf=true

  • Toshiba Portege M400 screen replacement

Is is possible to upgrade the display in the toshibe m400 to the multitouch and digitizer that the m700 has? i know the laptops are very similar and most parts will fit, but the screen stops for the hinge on the top of the base of the laptop are different. My question is, can i take the screen digitizer combination directly out of a m700 and do a direct drop in to the m400? Are the motherboard cable ends the same, bear in mind i'm not talking about the whole screen assembly, i mean just the display and the wiring, or are the parts similar but just different enough? I would like to know before i invest..

    Hello Alex
I have found interesting Microsoft article about this issue. Please check it under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917332/en-us
Obviously you must install Windows XP KB917332 on your unit. This should help.
    Good luck!

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • IOS7: Is there any way to turn off previews of texts in the lock screen but allow previews in the notification center when the phone is unlocked?

In iOS6 text message previews would be shown in the notification center when the phone was unlocked and would just show up as "text message" or "imessage" in the lock screen...is there a way to change it so it's the same in iOS7? currently with "no preview" picked, whenever I swipe down in my notification center it just shows text messages with the contact name and not the message itself like it used to.

I've set up another user on my home Mac and left that one logged in. Now when I connect from work it asks me if I want to share the screen or log on virtually as my user. I think choosing the second option doesn't power up the screen.

  • Portege M400: no wide screen external resolution (1360x768)

I'm trying to get an external LCD TV with native resolution 1360x768 connected to the external VGA port of my Toshiba Portege M400. This only works with an external resolution of 1024x768. Wide screen resolutions are just not available in the graphics options. I tried this also using Powerstrip, but I did not manage to get it to 1360x768. With another laptop I did.
According to the specifications of the Intel 945GM chipset, it should support wide screen resolutions. It seems to be just a shortcoming of the Toshiba drivers. Is there any solution to this problem?
    Marijn

I dont think that Toshiba has something to do with INTEL graphic card drivers.
On the Toshiba page you can download the Intel graphic driver. Therefore if you want to send any requests so I think you have to send it to Intel.
But in my opinion I dont think that somebody from Intel or anywhere will create a driver especially for you. But I wish you good luck.
I think we have to use the available common resolutions.

  • Portege M400 - Error message: Sorry, but this product is not available in your region.

I get the message above when I click on the link 'Portege M400' registration page under my profile. This is odd bcause I am actually writing this mesage on the PortegeM400!?
What I want is, naturally, to go directly from my registration and to the drivers that are ready for my PC, but it appears that the registration procedure did not workout? How does this work out - do I need to set up a different country to be allowed to move on. (Current country is Denmark)
    Regards Per

    Hi
No reason to be confused! What I want is quite natural - for a programmer. After registering my pc details Thosiba naturally knows what drivers I will be looking for. So what I expect is simply a link to those drivers and notting else. What I get is however a confusing message that - if nothing else - tells me somthiget that vcan not be true... if true I should not be able to input the registration information in the first place.
to summ up I do not want to go through the laubor of figureing out what drivers I need - and actually I do not need to as thosiba has all nessesary the information and so lets move on.
Also found the lik that is missing on this page http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/registration_basic.jsp?service=EU ;-)

  • Picking and moving Portege M400 causes crash and lockup

I have a new problem with Portege M400 that started a few days ago.
If I pick it up or move it then it will crash or lock up. I'm wondering if anyone has any clue as to what may be causing this and what can be done?
My only guess is to replace the hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Greg

It is a short that happens when the lappie is moved due to the hinge no longer being tightly held to the case.
Took the lappie apart this weekend. Had to do both base and screen as the hinge (obviously) goes into both bits.
1 of 2 things solved the problem for me (maybe both):
1 - Taking it apart and putting it back together again - screws all retightened etc so the hinge moves a lot less now.
2- putting some tape around the wires that are rubbed up against when the hinge moves.
There are 5 wires (3 small, round, 2 large and flat) that go through the hinge.
This guide gets you most of the way in:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/take-apart-tablet-pc-1.htm
    and
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/remove-lcd-screen-digitizer-1.htm
After following the guides there is a little more to do to get into the hinge, but not too much.
All in all took about 4 hours.
Make sure you record which screws came from where - there are quite a few that look very similar but only fit certain holes.
    Enjoy and good luck.

  • Portege M400 - Cursor shoots down to bottom left

Wierd one here, using a Portege M400 on the docking station.
Mouse cusor shoots down to bottom left of screen at random.
Changed the mouse, disabled the touchpad, still doing it, driving me mad, any thoughts?

    Hi
This issue is known to me but on notebook with dual pointing device. When the AccuPoint placed in the middle of keyboard is defective you can have such problems. But, if I am remembering well, Portege M400 does not have AccuPoint. Am I right about that?

  • Portege M400 Problems

My Portege M400-EZ5301 has one consistent problem and I would like to know if it is something I can resolve myself, before sending it of for expensive repairs. Ever since the 1-year warranty ran out on this table-pc, the fan accelorates randomly and freezes the computer. This happens at the slightest movement, so I have been immobile with this laptop for some months now. The problem has gotten worse and now the fan goes off at any time, and cannot restart. When I restart the computer, the fan goes off immediately and sometimes it actually takes me an hour to get it restarted. I give it some minutes before restarting but I keep getting the high speed fan and a frozen start screen. I am desperately seeking any information if someone else has experienced the same problem or has some idea what's going on with this laptop. I have come to my last bit of patience from loosing so many vital information during these episode.

Understand your concern. The fan operates randomly on the condition affected from the processes,HDD and apps in use, longevity running of the components so to speak. Occasionally, it may not operate right upon bootup, but as harddrive works it does. Consistently running an indicator overheating-is the fan and exhaust area free of debris, good air flow around unit. 'Freeze' the computer is application oriented in most cases. Has there been a power loss to the unit with power adapter plugged in? Can you pinpoint which program you are in when a high speed fan.  Possible a trip to the Authorized Service Provider is in order. Will rsearch more.

  • Portege M400 hardly starting up

I've been actively using my Portege M400 for almost 2 years. Few months
ago it has started becoming less and less easier to start up the
laptop. When I turn it on, the following happens:
    * The screen remains black and doesn't display anything
    * The power LED either blinks yellow or lights green
    * The HDD LED blinks just one time for a 1/10 second and remains off, or doesn't light up at all
    * Sometimes the fan starts working quite actively and loudly
The only thing I can do with it is to turn the laptop off and try
again. Sometimes it starts up after the first attempt, but sometimes I
have to try up to 10 times.
Here is a video showing the behaviour described above:
Any ideas what is this all about? Perhaps, I should cleap up the laptop inside, particularly the fan?

I agree with Andrej. It is not easy to say for sure why this happen but if you cannot start notebook properly using AC adapter only I presume there can be some problem with board electronic.
To be honest I don't see anything what you can do alone to solve this issue and maybe you need professional help.
Contact nearest authorized service provider and talk with them. Explain the situation. They have special diagnostic tools and maybe they should check your Portege notebook.
Please be so nice and inform us what will happen.

  • Portege M400: Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive?

Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive in my Portege M400?
    I've tried and failed.
I can copy the system resore CD to the new HD but the result is a blue-screen failure when the system boots.
I can't get a clean install of Windows XP to even start -- the HD is not recognised despite using the Toshiba SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy.
I've tried using Norton Ghost to copy an image of the existing (working) HD to the new HD but that also results in a blue-screen failure.
Is there something proprietary about the SATA?
Will the laptop only work with the original HD?
Will a replacement (larger) Toshiba HD work?
    -ne

Power down the notebook and start it pressed ESC key.
On the third bios page (pg down) you find the raid configuration.
I assume you actually have already the RAID setting but it is not really written to the HDD.
At first remove the RAID and change to JOBD the password confirmation 1234.
Save settings und reboot. Enter bios again and change it from JOBD to RAID (again 1234).
After this your HDD will work fine!

  • Portege M400 keeps freezing

I recenlty purchased a Portege M400 and this completely freezes and requires a hard reboot at least once a day - any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi Michael,
    I had the same problem.
You should first make sure that your system is accepted by the machine as working properly:
    - check the device manager for faulty drivers.
    - fully update Windows.
    - run a scandisk at startup.
    - run a full virus and spyware/malware check.
    - run a full defragmentation.
Once you've done all that, check your BIOS version. The current BIOS is version 1.5. The one installed on your machine (if preinstalled) should be 1.4.
If you have version 1.4, go to the update page for your model, download the Windows based BIOS upgrade and unzip it to a convenient location.
VERY IMPORTANT: make sure your computer is in boot mode (and not in resume mode) and that all security software has been disabled before proceeding with the upgrade. You should also temporarily disable the screen saver and disconnect from the internet (to make sure that no other automatic update is running in the background).
When you are satisfied that your computer is completely idle, double click on the exe file and do not touch anything until the machine has performed a full reboot.
There are other updates available on the site, but proceed with caution and only update a driver (ie display driver) if you are unsatisfied with it. If the machine is working fine after the BIOS upgrade, I suggest leaving it as it is.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot start programs Ink Crossword and Ink Desktop on Portege M400

    Hi,
I have just purchased Portege M400 with XP tablet on it.
I updated it with SP3 and all relevnt MS updates.
I have tried to use the Ink Crossword and Ink desktop and they do not start at all.
If I try "Explore the experience pack" then the option screen comes up but when you click start the above programs you hear the click but nothing happens.
Interestingly snipping tool 2 does work!
I have downloaded the pack from MS and reinstalled it but still no good.
    Any ideas anyone??
    Thanks

Hmm did you install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 on your system???
Microsoft recommends these minimum system requirements for Microsoft Experience Pack for Tablet PC 2005:
Windows XP for Tablet PC Edition 2005, English language
    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Windows Media Player 10 (required for Media Transfer)
At least 50 MB of available free space on your hard disk
Maybe you should also check some details and further info on this MS page:

Problem with Arabic font: In certain contexts, when writing Arabic with vowel signs (fatha, damma, kasra, sukun) a sequence of sukun + fatha/damma etc. would reverse automatically. Is this a known bug?
    Example: عَيْنٌ
    would automatically convert to عَيُنْ
Funnily, it doesn't seem to happen here, but it does when entering text in a web interface (using Firefox, font Bayan) and when using Text Edit.
Seems to be a problem of a specific font, as e.g. Arial MS Unicode works fine. Any hints?
    Thank you!

You can't do Arabic on MS Word for Mac.  This app has never supported RTL scripts, so you need to use something else.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
You switch between languages by using the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcuts apple/command plus space.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts to make sure that is activated.
To see which key does what, you use Keyboard  Viewer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13746
You place vowels on letters by typing the key for the vowel after the key for the letter.  The vowels are on the option/alt keys, option/alt + a gives you َ

  • How to change nickname when writing reviews in App Store?

Hi guys, I had an iTunes account that I don't use anymore but I want to use the nickname I had when writing the reviews in my new account, it won't let me chose it because it's already taken by my older account... Is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance

If you didn't already sort it--
in iTunes, go to Store | View My Account. Make sure to enter the email for your old account.
The main Apple Account Information screen has an Edit Nickname button next to your nickname. You should be able to change that nickname in the old account.
Then log out of the Store, log back in with the email for your new account, and see if it will let you use the old nickname.
It might be necessary to delay while the computers figure out the old name is free, if it doesn't work immediately.
