Portege M400 swapping HD from XP to Vista

I have two Portege units, one with XP Pro and one with Vista.  The XP unit is giving me problems so I would like to put the hard drive in the unit the unit that has a Vista drive in it.  The user does not want to use Vista.  When I make the swap, the XP drive will not boot up in the machine that had the Vista drive.  Any suggestions as to why this will not boot up?   BIOS settings?

Hi,
just a little question: did you already installed the Vista compatible BIOS on your machine?? Its one of the most important steps before installing the "wonderful" Vista on your harddisk (I cannot understand why you need it but OK its your machine... ;) )
If not already did, go to the Toshiba Driver Download site and download the latest BIOS for machine (Vista compatible) which is absolutely essential if you decided to put Windows Vista on your machine.
Heres the link:

Would appreciate any feedback from you regarding your situation.

  • Reformatting a Toshiba Portege m400 with xp or vista

Ive tried reformatting both windows XP and Vista on the Toshiba Portege M400, both without sucess.
For XP, Ive booted from CD, then at first I was having trouble getting the setup to acknowledge that there was a harddrive. Then I bought a USB floppy drive and installed the Toshiba RAID drivers by pressing f6 during setup. It loaded the file KR10I.sys. Then after formatting the partition and the installation began it gave me the prompt saying the KR10I.sys could not be read from the CD, even though it was loaded using the floppy. After pressing ESC to skip, it tells me that the CD is damaged and cannot be read. Ive tried this with two seperate XP disks so thats not the problem.
For Vista, the setup begins and gets to about roughly 90% and gives me the error code 0xc00000e0, also stating that either there is hardware corruption or a bad disk.
Any assistance or advice that you may offer would be greatly appreciated. It doesnt matter too much on which OS i get on the laptop so whichever is an easier fix. I would prefer XP however since I am more familliar with that OS.
    Thanks in advance!

    For starters...
Which Portege M400? What is the part number? Which country?

  • Creating Vista Recovery disk on Portege M400

I have upgraded an M400 which came with XP to Vista Business. Launching the Toshiba Recovery Disk utility delivers a message "not HDD partition found". The management console shows a recovery partition - though it probably still has the XP recovery info.
Anybody got ideas on how to transfer in a Vista recovery image into this partition? Is this available from Toshiba somewhere in the world? I can get my tech support people to chase it if we know it exists....
    Cheers
    From Australia

    Hi,
maybe you should properly format the drive and remove ALL partitions with an external program (like UBCD -> "Ultimate Boot CD") and then try it again.
It can be that the XP recovery partition is blocking the new recovery/installation process.
If I were you I would try this format-thingy.
Otherwise grab another HDD and try it with this. ;)
    Cheers

  • How to resize partition on Portege M400?

I've tried Paragon Partition manager (bootCD).
But, when I loaded from CD, Partition manager does not see hard drive of my Portege M400
Is there special drivers or software for doing this task?

Do you use the Vista or XP OS??
If you use Vista OS you can change the partition size n the disk management
Just simply shrink the existing partition and then create a new one on the free space or simply add the free space to another partition.
If you use the XP I would recommend using the tool called Partitions Magic 8.

Its a wonder full tool which supports many useful functions!!!

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • Portege M400: no wide screen external resolution (1360x768)

I'm trying to get an external LCD TV with native resolution 1360x768 connected to the external VGA port of my Toshiba Portege M400. This only works with an external resolution of 1024x768. Wide screen resolutions are just not available in the graphics options. I tried this also using Powerstrip, but I did not manage to get it to 1360x768. With another laptop I did.
According to the specifications of the Intel 945GM chipset, it should support wide screen resolutions. It seems to be just a shortcoming of the Toshiba drivers. Is there any solution to this problem?
    Marijn

I dont think that Toshiba has something to do with INTEL graphic card drivers.
On the Toshiba page you can download the Intel graphic driver. Therefore if you want to send any requests so I think you have to send it to Intel.
But in my opinion I dont think that somebody from Intel or anywhere will create a driver especially for you. But I wish you good luck.
I think we have to use the available common resolutions.

  • Portege M400 - How to install Toshiba Utilities for Windows 7?

I've upgraded my Portege M400 to Winows 7 (32bit) which went fine. However, cant find how to get and install the utilities I had included with the XP Tablet version.
Can anyone suggest how to get them (I understand they were available for Vista)?
    TIA.
    Kris

    Hi
The Toshiba Utilities that you mean are only designed for Windows XP. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 you need only the Toshiba Value Added Package. This package contains all what you need.
Portege M400 doesnt support Windows 7 but you can try to install the Vista drivers. The most of them are also work on Windows 7.
As far as I know you also need Toshiba Button Support on this model.

  • Portege M400 - Windows XP cannot find the hard disk drive

    Hi,
Ive got a Portege M400 to which im wanting to start a fresh, I never had the tablet XP CD so im trying to install using a XP Pro disc but everytime I get no hard drive can be detected and I tried a another Home edition disc also.
Ive searched for SCSI/ SATA drivers but can only find RAID drivers to which are no good for me,
Hopefully someone can help me out
    Thanks

    Hi wacksonjackson,
Why these RAID drivers are not good for you? Windows XP requires RAID drivers if your notebook has RAID controller and there is no other option to install XP from a normal Windows XP disk. So download the RAID drivers on official Toshiba website. Either you create a new installation disk with RAID drivers using freeware tool nLite or you copy the drivers on an external USB FDD and load them during XP setup.
Also check similar threads here in forum. You will find hundreds of similar threads about SATA and RAID drivers.
    Check this!!!

  • Portege M400 - Error message: Sorry, but this product is not available in your region.

I get the message above when I click on the link 'Portege M400' registration page under my profile. This is odd bcause I am actually writing this mesage on the PortegeM400!?
What I want is, naturally, to go directly from my registration and to the drivers that are ready for my PC, but it appears that the registration procedure did not workout? How does this work out - do I need to set up a different country to be allowed to move on. (Current country is Denmark)
    Regards Per

    Hi
No reason to be confused! What I want is quite natural - for a programmer. After registering my pc details Thosiba naturally knows what drivers I will be looking for. So what I expect is simply a link to those drivers and notting else. What I get is however a confusing message that - if nothing else - tells me somthiget that vcan not be true... if true I should not be able to input the registration information in the first place.
to summ up I do not want to go through the laubor of figureing out what drivers I need - and actually I do not need to as thosiba has all nessesary the information and so lets move on.
Also found the lik that is missing on this page http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/registration_basic.jsp?service=EU ;-)

  • Portege M400 - How to delete fingerprint data of Protector Suite

    Dear all,
    1) Protector Suite 5.4 sometimes generated a WinXP crash on my Portege M400.
    2) I followed the suggestion by WinXP and upgraded it to the 5.8 release. Unfortunately in this way I lost the functionalities of automatic access to passworded websites (the 5.8 online help says that this module is optional, but I didn't find how to install it).
    3) So I uninstalled the 5.8 and put on again the 5.4.
    4) Disaster.
    5) It's clear that the fingerprint data, updated to the 5.8 format, are still somewhere in the system. The uninstall of Protector Suite doesn't destroy them. For this reason the original 5.4 doesn't allow to do anything, because in its opinion user data are corrupt. First of all, I cannot delete/modify user data from inside the program.
So, PLEASE, let me know where these damned fingerprint data are, so I'll be able to delete them and start Protector Suite from scratch.
    Thanks in advance.
    -P

    (Non)-problem solved!
It was really simple (but if you're headless... you're headless! :-))
During the uninstallation of the 5.8, I didn't take care about the question asking "Do you want to remove all the data..." or something like. And the default value is "No".
This time I chose "Yes" and this allowed me to downgrade to the 5.4 release and to setup it from scratch.
Unfortunately the error message given by Protector Suite when attempting to delete existing data doesn't help. It tells about an "internal error" and nothing more. So, in the case... take care about it!

  • Portege M400 - CPU cooling issue

One year ago, when I had been using my Portege M400 for 2 years, it started deadlocking occasionally. Sometimes [I couldn't even start it up|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjNa8-c2Aro]. Using cut and try method I located the problem. The metal spring which clasps the heatsink to CPU was doing it with not enough strength:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/531/531/170720102581.jpg
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/534/534/170720102589.jpg
The problem has been solvable by benting the clutches so the spring starts apply more force clasping the heatsink to CPU:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/535/535/170720102591.jpg
Applying a new layer of thermal grease has been helpful as well:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/533/533/170720102585.jpg
However, the solution works for several weeks only. And then (particularly if it is hot outside) the story starts all over again.
Any suggestions how to solve the problem once and for all? Thanks.

    Hi Greendrake,
Its really great that you are interested in your Portege M400 and you can disassmble it. Its really not easy and so this can only be done from people with a lot of experience.
Anyway, as you know here its user forum only. That means you can talk with normal people like you and me. So I would recommend contacting an authorized service provider in your country. Maybe the guys know about this problem or something else or you need a special thermal grease because not all thermal greases compatible to all cooling assemblies.
By the way: On the Toshiba website you can find a list of all service providers.
    I hope it helps. :)

  • Picking and moving Portege M400 causes crash and lockup

I have a new problem with Portege M400 that started a few days ago.
If I pick it up or move it then it will crash or lock up. I'm wondering if anyone has any clue as to what may be causing this and what can be done?
My only guess is to replace the hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Greg

It is a short that happens when the lappie is moved due to the hinge no longer being tightly held to the case.
Took the lappie apart this weekend. Had to do both base and screen as the hinge (obviously) goes into both bits.
1 of 2 things solved the problem for me (maybe both):
1 - Taking it apart and putting it back together again - screws all retightened etc so the hinge moves a lot less now.
2- putting some tape around the wires that are rubbed up against when the hinge moves.
There are 5 wires (3 small, round, 2 large and flat) that go through the hinge.
This guide gets you most of the way in:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/take-apart-tablet-pc-1.htm
    and
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/remove-lcd-screen-digitizer-1.htm
After following the guides there is a little more to do to get into the hinge, but not too much.
All in all took about 4 hours.
Make sure you record which screws came from where - there are quite a few that look very similar but only fit certain holes.
    Enjoy and good luck.

  • Portege M400 - unable to use full 4Gb RAM

I've installed two KTT667D2/2G modules on my laptop (Portege M400-103, part. no. PPM40E-012018G3) - making total 4Gb. However, both original Windows XP Tablet and Ubuntu 9.04 are unable to see all the 4Gb - they see 3.2Gb only.
The BIOS shows the amount correctly - 4096 Mb.
I've also tried to fix the issue by updating BIOS to the last version (3.80, 30/05/08), but both OS's (Windows and Ubuntu) still see 3.2Gb only.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    > Just only a 64bit OS could be able to use and to recognize more than 3.2GB RAM
But that's ridiculous! Why the specs tell me [maximum expandability : 4,096 MB |http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&PRODUCT_ID=114027] if the installed CPU doesn't support 64 bit? I see "4096 Mb", I go and buy these 4Gb and I can't use it all. So I wasted my money just because they didn't bother to state 3.2Gb instead of 4Gb (being aware of the 32 bit CPU limitation) !

  • Portege M400 Problems

My Portege M400-EZ5301 has one consistent problem and I would like to know if it is something I can resolve myself, before sending it of for expensive repairs. Ever since the 1-year warranty ran out on this table-pc, the fan accelorates randomly and freezes the computer. This happens at the slightest movement, so I have been immobile with this laptop for some months now. The problem has gotten worse and now the fan goes off at any time, and cannot restart. When I restart the computer, the fan goes off immediately and sometimes it actually takes me an hour to get it restarted. I give it some minutes before restarting but I keep getting the high speed fan and a frozen start screen. I am desperately seeking any information if someone else has experienced the same problem or has some idea what's going on with this laptop. I have come to my last bit of patience from loosing so many vital information during these episode.

Understand your concern. The fan operates randomly on the condition affected from the processes,HDD and apps in use, longevity running of the components so to speak. Occasionally, it may not operate right upon bootup, but as harddrive works it does. Consistently running an indicator overheating-is the fan and exhaust area free of debris, good air flow around unit. 'Freeze' the computer is application oriented in most cases. Has there been a power loss to the unit with power adapter plugged in? Can you pinpoint which program you are in when a high speed fan.  Possible a trip to the Authorized Service Provider is in order. Will rsearch more.
