Portege M400 - unable to use full 4Gb RAM

I've installed two KTT667D2/2G modules on my laptop (Portege M400-103, part. no. PPM40E-012018G3) - making total 4Gb. However, both original Windows XP Tablet and Ubuntu 9.04 are unable to see all the 4Gb - they see 3.2Gb only.
The BIOS shows the amount correctly - 4096 Mb.
I've also tried to fix the issue by updating BIOS to the last version (3.80, 30/05/08), but both OS's (Windows and Ubuntu) still see 3.2Gb only.
Any ideas? Thanks.

But that's ridiculous! Why the specs tell me [maximum expandability : 4,096 MB |http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&PRODUCT_ID=114027] if the installed CPU doesn't support 64 bit? I see "4096 Mb", I go and buy these 4Gb and I can't use it all. So I wasted my money just because they didn't bother to state 3.2Gb instead of 4Gb (being aware of the 32 bit CPU limitation) !

  • Laptop use only 4GB RAM of physical 8GB in 64bit Windows 7

In my laptop HP630 had 4GB of RAM. I have installed additional 4GB. But the Bios shows 4GB of memory instead of 8, and Windows 7 x64 - also shows the memory capacity 4 GB (3.86 available). However, the program CPU-Z displays properly connected the card in the first and second slot, and the total volume of 8192 Megabytes.
How to make Windows to use all the memory?

  • Kernel for i686 which uses all 4GB RAM?

I've got i686 (x86) version of Arch installed. How can I make it use all my 4GB RAM? It just sees 3,3GB now. I know it's possible to use more than 4GB on 32-bit with some tweaks etc (I'm using 8GB on RHEL i386 servers at work), but how do I make it so in Arch?

True Ibertus but not apparent from the post.
An added observation is that the added PAE requires ram for addressing so the full 4GB is not accessible, about 3.5GB is useable.  Thusly, the added 1GB is actually only a half GB and requires the 64g highmem mod to the kernel..required for every new upgrade.

  • Portege 7200 does not use full display

Have loaded windows 98SE onto portege 7200 (model number PP720E-6390W-EN) and cannot get the display to use full screen.
I have downloaded display-win9x-650554022icd driver but there is no '.exe' file to initiate the installation. Any ideas?
    cheers

    Hi,
what a kind of file was there? Maybe an *.inf file? If a such and *.inf file is existent then everything is alright. Just go to the device manager and to the graphics device,
go to install new driver and then when windows is asking for an driver, just define the folder where the drivers are as the driver destination.
Windows should take the driver and install it.

  • I have recently upgraded to Firefox 5.0. I am now unable to use full screen mode when watching you tube. i've never had this problem before.

i can't think of anything else to add. i've always been able to use full screen mode in firefox, it still works on vimeo and it still works on NEtflix..

What happens when you try to use full screen mode -- button is ineffective, video doesn't display, etc.?
By the way, Adobe has issued a couple of security updates recently, so you might want to update your Flash plugin.

  • Portege M400 unable to find new 320GB HDD

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my 80Gb HDD to a new WD 320GB, and finding issues. Although I have upgraded the Bios to the latest version the hard drive is not visble to any operating system when it is in the main HDD Bay. The bizare thing is it is fully visable in the removable bay. Is this a configuration issue I am missing or will the machine not reconise the 320GB drive as it's main drive?
Any help or pointers would be great
    Thanks

I am using 320GB HDD without any problem... I'm not shure, but you can try what i have done. Go to the bios last page, and ceck your controler state - it shut not be in the JBOD state. RAID 0 is the corect state. then execiute command "create RAID 0" - or something like that (i don't remember the command exacli). Your disk shoud be seen in the system.
If you instal windows xp from microsoft disk, not form hiden partition... then you need HDD controller drivers. Without them it wont work, iven if you have the bios setup corect. The funny thing is that, you can instal them only using FDD drive (win xp text mode) - slipstreaming the drivers with WInLight is possible (putting the drivers in to windowsxp CD)

  • Vertex Array Object deleted after full screen RAM preview

    Hi,
I'm writing a plugin where I use OpenGL VAOs. Everything works fine, also RAM preview, but when I cancel full screen RAM preview and render a new frame the VAO is somehow deleted. I called glGenVertexArrays for testing and the handle it returns is 1, which was previously the handle of my valid VAO.
Has anyone had this problem?  It only happens when using full screen RAM preview. I also tested this in the GLator sample by generating dummy VAOs and it's exactly the same.

    Hi Rick,
    Thanks for the reply.
I've changed the .mp3 file to a .wav file and that seemed to fix everything, for the time being...
It previewed for 10 seconds fine, but after about 15mins of working on this the RAM preview area has started to shrink again and it's only previewing just over half (5 seconds).
I changed my memory and allocated 4GB to other apps, also turning off rendering multiple frames... (by the way for some reason I can't get my 'actual cpu's that will be used' to change from 0? This seemed odd). Still no change.
I've attached a screenshot of my comp details below, along with a shot of my screen when RAM previewing... (you can see the green bar does not go all the way). I'm not working with ANY footage which is why this is most peculiar, just the wav file so I can edit to the beat.
Once again if there is anything else you can think of...

  • Satellite A100-906 - BIOS see 4GB RAM but OS only 3GB

The [manual|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&PRODUCT_ID=1 20569&DISC_MODEL=1] says that the laptop supports 4 gigabytes of memory and the BIOS displays them, but the operating system (x86_64) sees only 3 gigabytes.

No, I do not use Windows.
I tested with different versions of the Linux operating system and Unix (opensolaris, openindiana).
    > Fact is that BIOS has recognized the full 4GB RAM. The chipset seems to support the 4GB RAM as well.
Yes, even the technical documentation on the chipset is confirmed, but nevertheless, 1 gigabyte had disappeared. : (

  • Bootcamp on Macbook Not Recognising 4GB RAM?

Am running Windows XP on my Macbook with 4GB RAM, and I don't think that Windows is recognising that there is 4GB available. I wouldn't have thought there should be a setting for this, but I could be wrong? When I check my properties in My Computer, it tells me that I have 2.72 GB of RAM; same when I open up my antivirus software.

Hi to you both and a warm welcome to Discussions,
sounds like you are both using the 32-bit editions of XP/Vista.
While theretically the 32bit Windows can use the full 4GB RAM, in practise only about 3GB are indeed useable. The rest is taken by Windows itself and the hardware reserves some adress ranges of the RAM as well.
Not to forget the 256MB RAM that are used by the 9400 graphics chip (called shared memory).
ETX: Don't get fooled by Microsoft and the Vista SP1. You can still only use the RAm amount Vista reported before applying the SP1.
Microsoft has simply changed what Vista reports from 'useable RAM' to 'Installed RAM'.
    Just a marketing trick.
    Hope it helps

  • 4GB ram can't recognize in Win-7 Ultimate 32 bit

Hi, I just brought the Mac Book Pro 15" with 4GB ram and 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, when i install Windows-7 ultimate 32 bit version with boot camp, can't recognize  the full ram, its only recognizing 2.3GB ram only, please help how can i tweak to see full 4GB ram, i need to work with 32 bit version only, some of my programes can't run on 64 bit version.
if any one can guide me to utilize the full ram in 32 bit would be greatly appriciated.
    regards
    Siva

I'm having the same issue. I have 32 bit Windows 7 Professional and it says only 2.17gb of my ram is usable. I know 32 bit operating systems don't support 4gb, but even with that in mind and the Intel HD graphics taking up memory, there's no way it should be this low. It should be around 3gb. What's going on here?

  • Portege M400: Why am I not asked for a password at boot?

    Hi,
I have a Portege M400 and I used the Toshiba Security Assist software to set up a BIOS boot password as well as an HDD protection password. This software, as well as the actual BIOS (Esc+F1 at boot) both show that the password I set is registered/recognized.
However, I am not actually asked for either of those passwords when I boot the computer!!!
I have a dual-boot system with the original WinXP for Tablet PC on one of the partitions, and an Ubuntu Feisty on another. My boot loader is GRUB but I don't understand why that should affect the behaviour of the BIOS that should happen before it calls the boot loader...
Can someone help me with this? It would be really important for me to protect my BIOS and the hard drive.
    Thanks in advance,
    dsokus

    1. Check your security settings with the Toshiba password utilty. Are these configured correctly?
    2. Did you set the user or the supervisor password? If you only set the supervisor password you are not asked for the password.
    3. Try to set the HDD and User pw in the initial bios setup (press ESC when prowering on).

  • Can I use 4GB RAM on my MSI K8N Diamond with Windows 7?

Can I use 4GB RAM on my MSI K8N Diamond with Windows 7? I have put 4GB DDR 1 in my motherboard but windows 7 says (2.75GB usable)...
    Regards, Jay

It depends highly on how much hardware (add-in cards) you have installed. If you have two VGA-cards, then it's likely that usable memory stays below 3GB. If you take some hardware out, you will see the usable memory increase a bit, but you won't reach the full 4GB. It will go as far as about 3.25 or so.

  • IMovie 09 uses up 4GB of RAM in less than 2 minutes

    Hi,
The topic says it all i think..
To be honest i don't know if i had this issue before Snow Leopard i have only been using it for about a week. I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 2.6GHz with 4GB RAM installed. I have never had any issues with the RAM being used up this fast before ever (and i'm a pretty heavy photoshop user and gamer).
With just a simple project and little events i make a short clip, some transitions and a background tune. Then i minimize iMovie to check my Mail or another app and notice the mac became horribly slow and minimizing takes a good minute. Then i check Activity Monitor and iStat Pro to find within just a few minutes i not only used up 4GB of RAM but only am well into 4GB Swap File usage, i need to restart to turn my Mac back into the fast Mc it was before i started iMovie.
Before writing this i did a few tests with garageband and a couple of other apps including Adobe Suite etc... i still have a little over 2GB RAM free. Then i start iMovie, open my project and mess around a little.... wham, RAM gone, is this what's known as a memory leak ?
Any thoughts on this? I started experimenting / learning iMovie because i have a wedding DVD to make soon, i need this software to work right.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

MPEG2 and AVCHD are two different codecs. Your footage will be one or the other, but not both. MPEG2 is used more often in standard definition cameras.
Having said that, your memory problem is unusual. iMovie uses a lot of memory, and if you are constrained on memory, it uses swap files. However, mine has never used up 4GB of real memory in 2 minutes. It looks like you have a memory leak somewhere (which could be a bug in iMovie).
I don't know how to find it since I can't replicate it on my system.
One thing that may help you monitor this is the free application called [MemoryStick|http://www.tidbits.com/matt>. You can install it and monitor your swapfiles real time. You can also see how much real memory and virtual memory iMovie is using at the moment through Activity Monitor (which I presume you are already doing.)
With MemoryStick, if I notice that I have 5,6, or 7 swapfiles going, and they are over 2GB (they have been as high as 4GB) then I know it is time to re-boot.
