Portege M800-107: Power Management & HDD Protection Utility questions!

Hi all,
I own a Toshiba Portege M800-107, I have recently installed windows 7 (ultimate edition), which enhanced my laptop capabilities. The only problems I face are:
1) The Power Management utility, where I have install the required drivers from the official page of Toshiba, the problem is that the Value Added package is installed without the power management. For now I over come the problem by using the power options offered by Windows 7.
2) The most important problem is the HDD Protection Utility which every time I try to install the driver from the official site, it stops the installation with the reason that this "hardware is not supported by this computer"
Apart those problems the laptop is working perfectly and faster.
If any one could assist me with my problems I would be very appreciated.

There is no special Power Saver tool for Win 7. The Value added package provides some additional options which you can find in Win 7/Vista power management.

The HDD Protection Utility using the acceleration sensor built in the computer.
The point is that there are different M800 on the market and possibly your M800 does not support the acceleration sensor. This could be the reason why you cannot install this tool.

  • Should i use "HDD protection utility" in connection with SSD drive?

I've replaced HDD with SSD and reinstalled my Windows. Accidentally I've installed "HDD protection utility"? Is it absolutely useless in system with SSD? Should I uninstall this utility?
    Thank you.

Since one month I use SSD with my Satellite Notebook. I have installed original recovery image that includes HDD protection utility. I can start it but it is inactive.
Strange thing is that with HDD it was inactive too. To be honest I dont care about that. It is preinstalled but I have disabled it from automatic start-up.
In my opinion you can remove it from the system.

  • HDD Protection utility seems to be corupt

    Hi,
the HDD protection utility file seems to be corupt for Qosmio notebooks - have tried downloading a few times with same corupt reply (for file hddprot) any other drivers to do same??

Maybe you should post some useful information:
Which Qosmio notebook do you have?
Which operating system do you use?
What is the message that you see on the screen?
I presume you have installed own OS version, right?

    18/08/08
    HDD Protection Utility
Toshiba Windows Vista 32 Bit 2.0.0.7 World Wide
on my Satellite Pro U200 PLUA1E-02802QS4 with Vista Business 32-bit?

All Toshiba stuff available on download page is the same as in recovery image.
All tools are tested and I don't see any reason why you should not be able to install this utility.
    Is some error message shown?

  • Where can I find XP x64 drivers for Portege R500 - hotkey / power management?

Where can I find downloads that will enable power management or hotkey support for my Portege R500?
I have already installed drivers for everything except fingerprint reader (don't want), tpm (really don't want), and hdd motion sensor (tos620a) (not bothered about right now). Most drivers are latest from original vendor websites, or, failing those, from Toshiba's Vista 64-bit download areas.
Everything else generally works: wifi, graphics & chipset, sound, lan, bluetooth stack, cardbus, card reader, etc.
However, having done this, the following issues remain:
FN hotkeys don't work for suspend to ram, suspend to disk, *screen* *brightness* - essential to extending lifetime; FN hotkeys for numeric/direction pad, external monitor toggle *do* work
Dedicated backlight toggle button doesn't do anything
However, in order to get battery lifetime beyond ~2.5 hours and closer to the rated 7.1 hours, I'll need to turn some things down / off occasionally. What software can help and where can I get it, such that it works on Windows XP x64 edition?
    Note:
I have tried the xp 32-bit packages that Toshiba supplies, they don't appear to work on x64. The 'ctrls' package requires 'cmod', but 'cmod' gives this error:
    TOSHIBA Common Modules Setup
Not an ACPI machine. Cannot install TOSHIBA ACPI Logical Device.
    OK
I have tried the xp 32-bit package called 'pwrsav'; it installs a bad help link to my start menu, and adds a couple of exes, tpsmain and tpsoddctl, to my auto-runs. These 32-bit executables quit immediately after execution.
I would have tried to install Toshiba's Vista 64-bit packages for hotkeys / common modules / power management, but the only one of the three I can find via toshiba.co.uk are common modules, and unfortunately that zip file only contains .inf, .cat and .sys files, no installer.
    Motivation:
I'm using a fresh install both because the default Vista install is unusable (900MB memory used on a fresh boot desktop, drive split into multiple partitions, trial, adware and broken software installed left and right)
I'm using x64 because I'm a software engineer whose next product needs to work on x64, and this new laptop was a likely first candidate

You didn't link to the tool you found. If you meant this tool then, you should be aware it doesn't work on x64 on R500:
    Display Tuner
    Cannot detect monitor!
Your monitor does not support DDC control or your videocard is not supported by Display Tuner.
You cannot use Display Tuner in this configuration.
    OK
It would be unlikely to work in any case, as display driver brightness isn't normally the same as the screen's brightness (hence power usage).
Maybe it's a communication issue, but I *have* found +original+ drivers for all essential components, just not for things like screen brightness - something that, to be honest, I more expect to be handled in firmware / bios, as that's been my experience on previous laptops, and is more reliable in any case, considering I could be running an oddball Linux or a completely different OS, or a CPU-intensive high-priority task.
The R500 series seem to be scrimping on the firmware and expecting OS utilities and dedicate yet another system tray icon to take over that job.
It does look like x64 is a no-go for mobile use on this machine, due to lack of firmware power management, which is a great pity as the point of such a light machine is mobility. I'll wipe it and install XP 32-bit and see how that goes.

  • Satellite A135-SP4088: Need XP drivers for power management and Hotkey utility

    Hello
I couldn't find drivers for the toshiba A135-SP4088, we bought 3 of them for the office and it's almost impossible to use with vista, so we go to XP SP2, and manage to get almost all of the drivers from other models, but i cannot find 2 utilities that work with this machine, they are:
Toshiba Power Management (the bulb in the task bar, remember?) :D
Hotkey Utility (so I can change Screen brightness, and go to hibernation (Fn+F4)
I have al the rest working, quite nicely but these two are a real problem, none of the ones I tested worked, some even crash the XP and have to go back to a previous restore point.
also, I didn't install any ACPI drivers, are they required?, which ones show I look for? since the model doesn't exist in csd.toshiba.com site.
Now, How one of the greatest notebooks manufacturers in the world can build such a nice computer without making drivers for the most widely used operating system?, can anyone explain me this because i sincerely don't understand it.
    thanks a lot!.
    Indkt.

    Hi
The Satellite A135-SP4088 seems to be designed for the US market so you should use the Toshiba US driver page for the driver download!!!!
But why you need the Toshiba power saver for XP? The XP supports an own power options and also the hibernation option. This option must be enabled in the control panel -> power options -> hibernate tab
    > didn't install any ACPI drivers, are they required
Toshiba page does not provide any special ACPI drivers. The OS uses own Microsoft drivers and the installation of any 3rd applications is not necessary!!!!
    regards

  • X61s: Power Management issues and related questions

    1)  My problems started when I upgraded to PM 3.5:  system instability, overheating, and battery run-down.  I finally eliminated PM 3.5 and it is running better, but still seems to be running more hot than before.
    2) Question: can I take the battery out when running on AC current?
    3) Also, do the batteries for the X61 also fit for the X61s?
    Richard

    1) download TPfancontrol and check your system temp and fan speed.
    2) Yes, but not recommended as the battery acts as a UPS, which prevents your laptop from shutdown if there is an accidental plug pull from the ac socket, or brown out/black out.
    3) yes.

  • BUG: Power Manager fails to autostart

Alright, this topic is a continuation of my conversation with Lenovo support on Twitter, as it has been a while and we were unable to resolve this problem.
Until recently I had Windows 7 x86 running perfectly normal with a number of ThinkVantage tools such as Power Manager, HDAPS protection, HotKey integration, etc. - all the bare necessities, though not the latest versions.
Recently I've formatted everything and installed Windows 7 SP1 x64. Immediately after installation I've installed the latest versions of Power Manager, etc. from Lenovo Support website (i.e. not through System Update). Upon installation, the Power Manager gave me this error:
Every time I rebooted my computer, the same thing showed up and the Power Gauge was not showing in the taskbar. After a bit of looking around, I have found that in the following registry entry:  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in the value rundll32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\PWMTR64V.DLL",PwrMgrBkGndMonitor the quotes were missing. Once I put them in, the Power Gauge started to show up during start up, however the message did not disappear.
Then I tried installing the APS protection which gave me a couple of the very same messages during installation. When the installation finished, I tried running the APS protection from the Control Panel, but it crashed every time.
Highly dissatisfied with all this, I've formatted the hard drive again, installed the same version of Windows and installed the Power Manager the very minute it finished installing, to be sure no other applications intervene. The result was the same.
From @lenovo on Twitter I've received an advice to uninstall the Power Manager and try installing it from System Update, however the same error message prevents me from uninstalling the Power Manager. I have also tried using the System Update to install the HDAPS (which I haven't installed this time), but it failed.
So there's my story. Any help would be very appreciated, as never before have I had a single issue with Lenovo tools.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

All right, I've gone through some experiments in the VMWare. Installing my modified image and then the Power Manager gave the same errors I am experiencing. However, when I used the untouched image, everything worked fine.
So I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this topic and apologize to @Lenovo for taking their time with this issue.
Yet I am very interested in what it is with the modified image that makes the Power Manager installation use paths like C:\Program Files (x86)\... instead of C:\Progra~2 like it happens with the normal image, which I just verified comparing registry entries. And also why the ThinkVantage tools are the only ones affected by this.
But in any case, thanks to everyone again and I will accept this solution now.

  • Defective screen on Portege M800

I bought a PORTEGE (M800-107) in 2009 and before the expiration of the 3-year-old-warranty (2012), the screen went black permanently .
I sent it to the official TOSHIBA service in Greece (called "IDEAL sa") who fixed it in about a month (and after two tries).
One and a half year later, the screen went black again. Now they ask from me 500 euros for the replacement of the monitor. Of course I'm not going to give all these money.
Portege was the 3rd Toshiba notebook I have used. I chose it because I wanted something powerful and professional. The irony is that the most expensive model went off earlier than the cheaper.
However, that was the LAST ONE from you.
PS: In order to take my notebook back (without fixing), I have to pay 30 euros, for the technicians' check!!!!!!!
Really, do you know anyone who goes to service for fun? Or am I responsible for your model's failure?

    Hi
To be honest Im really wondering you have this display problem. Portege and Tecra models are the best Toshiba business line notebooks and since years they are known as high quality products with best hardware.
Anyway, sometimes the best products have problems and make troubles. Similar things happen with all technical products. I know it is pretty pity and angry, especially in the moment when you need your notebook.
Maybe it sounds stupid now but maybe you can buy display on your own and find someone who can exchange it for you. I have done this for my friend few years ago. We bought display on eBay and we have exchanged it alone. Of course on our own risk.
    Bye and good luck

  • Satellite P70-A-11V - does HDD protection work without accelerometer?

    Hi all,
    I am new here.
I already made another post. In brief, I am pretty much expert in Toshiba Satellite laptops, but my new one, Satellite P70-A-11V, a high-end professional laptop, had some issues. It came with Windows 8, which I upgraded to 8.1. Unfortunately, the system degraded so bad that all pendrives made it crash. I connected my Toshiba camcorder to it, and it also crashed the laptop.
The search indexing was not working outside the C: drive. The pointer of any optical mouse started to freeze for seconds on the screen.
This latter I believe was due to underpowered USB ports.
So, I really had no choice after 2 total system restores, and installed Windows 7 Enterprise x64, SP1. The OS looks almost ok, but I still have problems, and one of these is that however I try to install the accelerometer utilities, there is no driver.
I tried the one for Windows 8 x64, but it just does not appear on the services list.
I found that the HDD protection utility was also stopped, and I searched this forum, and someone told that the Intel Rapid Storage technology should be uninstalled. I did so, and my HDD protection is running... but I am not sure if it is effective!
I remember that with the Windows 8.1, the utility always showed a message on the upper right corner: Vibration is detected etc, that the disk is temporarily shut down etc.
It was associated with some high pitch noise indicating that the disk was indeed stopped. Now I can shake the laptop, but no message pops up, no sound is heard.
I checked all the checkboxes at the HDD protection interface to indicate if there is vibration, but so far nothing. The HDD protection is up and running, but in the absence of accelerometer utility, the HDD protection just does not know when to act.
Am I right? Can Toshiba medicate this?
    All answers are greatly appreciated.

    Hi
Toshiba drivers and tools released for Win 8 or Win 8.1 are not fully comparable with the Toshiba software available for Win 7 OS.
Some drivers and tools which are available for Win 8 dont exist for Win 7 system.
For example; the Accelerometer Utilities or HDD Protection Utility were released especially for Win 8 / Win 8.1 system and are not available for Win 7.
But for Win 7 you will find the Toshiba VAP (value added package) and this package installs a range of important utilities which are essential component of Windows system and this VAP is required to make the other TOSHIBA original programs work properly.
Therefore you should install the VAP as first Toshiba tool to ensure that other software like HDD/SSD Alert Utility or PC Health Monitor

  • Software for suspend/hibernate and power management?

After working with Arch on my desktop pc for a while, I today installed it on my laptop, as well. Everything works fine so far, but after reading through a lot of articles on the wiki and threads on this board, I'm a little confused about which tools I should use for hibernate/suspend and power management?
Cpufreq-utils, acpid, pm-utils, laptop-mode-tools, etc. What do you recommend for use?
    Thanks in advance!

All that you listed there have different functions. I use all the above on my laptop. Cpufreq-utils enables the frequency scaling, pm-utils (should) enables suspend and/or hibernate, laptop-mode-tools adds some power management functions, etc. Anyways, they're all useful for a laptop. Install, tweak, ask questions
    Good luck!

  • HDD Protection System Service Disabled

Toshiba PC Health Monitor - HDD Protection System Service is disabled, how can I enable

    Hi
I think this is the simplest way to get the HDD protection working again.
Uninstall the HDD Protection Utility, reboot the unit and install this tool again.
    Reboot again.

  • HDD Protection - Check Disk / Defrag Problems

I believe the Toshiba HDD Protection utility has my hard drive write protected. I can't run a check disk (it cancels on its own) and I can't run a defrag. When I run check disk in repair mode, the error message specifically indicates the drive is write protected. Other attempts through other means indicates the drive is currently in use by another process.
I can boot in safe mode and the system responds. When logged in as a user the system is really slow. The system locks up when trying to disabled HDD Protection or responding to the pop-up that the head is temporarily moved to a safe position.

  • HDD Protection update problem on Tecra A8-10F

I have a problem that the Toshiba HDD Protection Utility is not working and I dont know why.
    I searched for this driver and i didn't find for Tecra A8 10F PTA83E but I found for Tecra M9(PTM91)the HDD Protection Utility 2.0.1.7 Windows Vista) update from this site { http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/239805/toshiba-tecra-m9(ptm91)-hdd-protection-utility-2.0.1.7-windows-vista-free-download.html }
I installed it into my laptop but the problem is that this utility is not protecting from shocking the laptop, i put all protection settings on default, and still not protecting.
Maybe because the driver for Toshiba Tecra M9?
So please can anyone give me this Toshiba HDD Protection Utility software?
you can send me to my email : [email protected] or give me site address :)
note: i searched it in this site about this driver and i didn't find it :(

    Hi
In my opinion the HDD utility does not work on your Tecra A8 because the used software was not designed for the A8 but for M9.
The Toshiba European driver page does not provide the HDD Protection Utility for Vista.
But I found one for the Tecra A9.

Check the HDD protection utility for Tecra A9 on the A8. Maybe it will work

Hello, X60, I intalled a new  XP SP 3 system and I wanted
to reinstall Power Manager Utility (I had istalled PM driver previously).
I downloaded the file fie g6u710ww.exe. But no go.
The system asks for Microsoft .NET 3 or later.
Well, the problem is that I istalled  Microsoft . NET 4 (which is clearly later then 3).
Anyway, It won't install the Power Manager Utility.
    What should I do?
    Thank you

I had the same issue with some sw earlier on my laptop with Win7/64 bit. That sw didn't want to be installed and needed the old .NET vesion. At the same time my system restricted old version .NET environment installtion process from M$ site or from sw installation package as I had up to date .NET. The result was I couldn't avoid that strange behaviour.
