Portege M900: Power Problems Battery and Charging

I hope someone here would helped me out in my problem. I bought my Toshiba Portege M900 last 2010. I would always plugin the charger to my laptop when I am at work.
There this one time that when I turned on my laptop, the battery was about to be empty like 7% remaining. I took my charger and plugged it in. After 5 seconds, it turned off without any warning or so.
I checked the lights in the laptop, the "charging light" is not ON despite that the charger was plugged in the socket. I tried to use the charger to my other Toshiba Sattelite Laptop and it worked.
I tried to remove the battery of the Toshiba Portege M900 Laptop from its place and plugged again the charger but still it did not turned ON.
So I took my Toshiba Portege M900 to the nearest service center. But surprisingly when I got there and related the problem to the technician, the laptop turned on after it was plugged. The technician said, he couldn't see any problems because the laptop was charging and it turned on right.
But when I took it home, whenever I remove the charger from the socket of the laptop, it would turn off immediately without any warning eventhough that battery is 100% charged.
And there were times, even if I remove the battery from the laptop but still plug the charger in.. the laptop will still NOT TURN ON.
I tried to check the Toshiba PC Health Monitor, but it would said that the battery is working good. What do you think seems to be the problem? Is it the battery, or the power jack, or the motherboard or the charger?

> Is it the battery, or the power jack, or the motherboard or the charger
I dont think its battery issue.
Why? Because the notebook does not power up even if the battery is removed but connected to AC adaptor.
_Power jack?_
Maybe. It could be possible that power jack or connection between the power jack and the motherboard isnt ok.
_Motherboard?_
It could be an problem with power supply electronic which is part of the motherboard but once again; this is just an idea
_Charger /AC adaptor?_
Hmm you said that the AC adaptor has been tested with another notebook and it worked. So possibly its not AC adaptor issue.
But are you sure that the other notebook did not run at battery power?
Has the AC adaptor been tested properly? This is an open question.
Another idea:
What BIOS version do you have installed on M900?
Found an BIOS update for the Protege M900
+BIOS version 2.40 upgrade for Portege M900 and Satellite Pro U500( For PSU56*, PSU5C*, PSU5J*, PSU5Q*, PSU86*, PSU8G* and PSU53* ONLY)+
http://pc.toshiba-asia.com/support/drivers/details/30516
There you can find an detail about fixed issue:
+System may not power on without using AC Adapter after the battery has been detached and reattach again. This has been fixed.+
Please check if your Portege M900 is one of the mentioned models and check if an BIOS update is available for your unit.

  • HP DV7-3085dx won't power up, seems the battery and charging is ok.. possible mother board problem?

Hi I recently received an HP DV7-3085dx from a friend of mine since he hadn't been using it for a while.
So, when I tried to turn it on for the first time, the power button wouldn't work, or the lap top itself wouldn't power on.
When I plug in the charger, AC adapter light turns on, and when I connect the battery, both the battery light and the AC light turns on fine.
However, there's no fan, or any light flashing when I press the power button as if it's dead.
    I've searched and tried:
    1. hard reset - pressing on the power button for a minute without any attachement and so on
    2. reseating ram and CMOS battery
    3. cleaning heatsink and re-applying thermal compound.
    4. tried turning on the laptop without hard drive.
However, none of those would solve the problem.
Could it be the faulty motherboard, fan or heatsink?
Or, does battery light on means the motherboard is safe, at least?
By the way, it seems like the battery charges just fine as after a while on an AC, the battery light turns off(signaling that it's fully charged)

Hello coolhair50, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you've acquired your Notebook from a friend, that you're trying to get it to turn on and start up. That only the batter and charger appear to be working as the Notebook will not turn on. I will try to assist you with this.
You're on the correct path, the issue does appear to be hardware related from what you've attempted so far. The battery and charger appear to be fine.
What I would suggest starting with is this document: Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. It will guide you through testing the memory and hard drive. If all of that tests ok, then you're most likely looking at a motherboard issue.
You have a few options at that point. The first would be callling support to see what they could offer. HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.
The second would depend on your own personal knowledge of Notebooks, but you could use the Maintenance and Service guide to look up possible compatible parts and how to replace them.
Please let me know how everything goes for you.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

Power Adapter Does Not Charge the Battery and Charge Light Is On?
My power adapter doesn't charge my computer anymore. however the charge light is on.
Please help my battery is draining fas

So, with your power adaptor connected not only does the battery not charge but the powerbook is not running on ac power. Then I guess the power adaptor is faulty. In as much as you've verified this with a known good one a new one is in order. Try yours in another powerbook to make sure.

  • DV4 1275 Power Issue, Battery not charging, Will not Power with AC only

    HP Pavillion DV4-1275mx
Battery will not charge, Laptop will not fully turn on with battery in (battery not charging at all).  Laptop will not power on at all with no battery using only AC and with battery it will attempt to load and die due to lack of charge.
Have tried 3 diff HP chargers.
The orginial 1 that came with the laptop is dead and will not charge anything. Tried it on a diff HP laptop and not recognizing any power
The 2nd one is OE HP laptop diff model but same wattage that came with my gfs work laptop.  I have charge my laptop with it before in the past however it is not charging the battery now either
The 3rd is a aftermarket generic one that my g/f bought in the airport and it works with hers as well however I have never used it on mine.
I have tried hard resetting.. taking out battery, holding power for a min and replugging everything.
Also when I remove the battery and plug in either of the chargers that do work the power LED are "not" lighting up on the front or the LED where the AC plugs into the laptop.  Which makes you think the charger is bad however the 2 working chargers do work on my other 2 HP laptops.
If i plugin one of the 2 working chargers with the battery it will go through the boot process and as its starting windows it just dies and shuts off.  The power led by the DC jack does light up and the charging light on the front lights up. However this only works when I unplug the battery and plug the AC charger in. After the laptop boots up to starting windows and dies. I have to remove the battery and replace it to get the LEDS to light back up..  If the MB was bad I wouldnt think any of the LED's would come on nor would the laptop boot up to the starting windows. If  keep trying to turn it on the booting time is shortened as the battery is not holding a charge and sometimes it only makes a few seconds and then just dies out.
I dont have alot of money to spend so I was hoping maybe you could point me in the right direction.
Should I buy the replacement part OE charger for my specific laptop? (not sure if its going to be much diff than the others since they are all 65 watt chargers)
Should I buy a new battery as well?
Or does this sound like a short problem in the mother board or a solder issue with the DC plugin?
If it is an issue with the motherboard I do not want to go through the hassle of buying the battery and charger as I will end up having to just replace the laptop
If you could please advise me what direction to go I would be so greatful.

Dude, I have the same exact problem with mine. It's not a cheap fix either. It definitely is the motherboard.
I'm no expert, but I believe the problem is a dead capacitor on the motherboard preventing it to build up a charge.
I spoke with an HP rep, which told me it's $398 for them to fix.
I let them know that I didn't have another $400 to put into this laptop. So, they suggested I try reseating the motherboard. And also reseating the memory modules.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01597750.pdf
That is a pdf of the laptop's manual. It'll help in reseating. Page ( 59 ) for the motherboard. Page ( 67 ) for the memory modules.
This hasn't helped at all with mine, but maybe it'll help with yours!

  • I am getting my third battery and charger! What's the deal with poor quality?

My macbook is a late 2009 model.  It's always been running great, but I have some key issues that are making me question ever buying a mac again... For starters, I am purchasing my third battery and charger since owning this computer.  I am not very happy with the quality of these devices...  The battery is buldged out, and looks like it's ready to explode any day! The power supply is frayed, and exposing bare wires!  What is the deal with such poor quality products? I always thought Apple was top notch in high quality, but lately, I've been proven wrong...
    Power cord:
    Battery:
Seems to me that these issues REALLY need to be addressed by Apple.  The reviews on the power supplies are ridiculous!  Numorous complaints, yet Apple has YET to do anything about it!  So my question is, what is Apple going to do about these issues?  These need to be addressed, and fixed, ASAP!  I owned a Dell laptop for 6 years, and never had an issue with the batteries I had, OR the power supply, and it cost me half the price of this macbook.

That would be awesome, if the nearest service area wasn't 4 hours away.... It would cost me just as much in gas to drive down there as it would just to buy a cheap replacement off of ebay...

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections. If it still won't start, remove the battery and start with just the AC power. Next try without the AC power and just the battery.

I have an iphone that has stopped charging. I have purchased a new battery and charger for it but it is still not charging. Does anyone know how i can fix this?

That pretty much eliminates all the user-serviceable parts the phone has.
When you say you purchased a new battery, I'll assume that it included the installation and you did not go fiddling with the nanoscrews and such. So it's got to have some sort of warranty that the part is good and it is time to take it back for service.

  • Unable to charge my MacBook but the battery and charger are fine...

    Hello all...
I brought this MacBook in late 2008 as i love Apple products and had had my last one for 5 years with no problems, so i upgraded.
Before the year warranty was up the battery completely died, which worried me as my previous apples battery lasted 3 years before gradually loosing power. This one worked fine one day, the next it was dead.
Both me and my partner have a MacBook so when this one failed to charge, i had the luxery of being able to test the charger and the battery, both are fine.
His Macbook is about 5 years old now and he has never had one issue or needed to replace the battery.
Does it sound like i brought a dud?
Has anyone heard of this problem before, or know of a solution?
    Yours in anticipation
    A very frustrated Mac user

Basically the magsafe board is a tiny board that plugs into the logic board. The battery cord, which are the brass pins you see when you remove the battery, are the end of another cord which connects to the logic board. If it isn't the magsafe board, which btw is a fairly reliable piece of hardware, then it is the logic board because this board is what actually houses the SMC. The SMC, or System Management Controller, is what controls hardware power and cooling by taking the information from the temp sensors, the battery, magsafe and other locations and deciding what to do with that information and what it means. If the SMC is not functioning properly, then the machine will still use power when it is given to it, but routing the power correctly, ensuring the battery is charged and everything else can be faulty. The SMC is a non-removable part of the logic board, so when it fails, the only way to recover its functions are to replace the entire board.
Sadly the Genius didn't lead you astray when he told you that. A cheaper option might be a third-party battery charger from macsales.com. I don't work for them or get anything for the reference, but they do have external battery charges and conditioners for the MacBook batteries.

  • HP Pavilion dv6t- power cord in and charging but computer doesn't recognize it

    Hello all,
Sometimes when I plug my laptop in, my laptop says it's still on battery power, the light on the outside of the ac outlet won't turn on and my battery bar tells me the battery is discharging, even though it is definitely charging, the charging light on the front of the laptop is on and the battery will go to 100%.  I don't know how to tell if this is a software issue, an issue with the cord, or an issue with the computer's outlet.  Usually when this happens, I unplug it and plug it back in multiple times until the little light comes on and the computer recognizes the ac. Any suggestions?  I want to resolve this before my computer gets some kind of electrical shock.
    Thanks,
    -Rebecca

    YAY!
called HP support and they won't even talk to me unless I pay them for support.  This is bogus.  Obviously, this is either a known issue or a normal indication that either the battery or the ac adaptor is malfuctioning.
So, as I understand it, these are my choices:
    1.  Give in to HP extortion and pay them just to talk, in hopes they actually have a relevant solution.
    2.  Pay $100 for a new battery and see if that is the problem.
    3.  Pay $75 for a new ac adaptor to see if that is the problem.
    4.  Live with the issue and pray that my laptop doesn't just stop working at the worst time possible (on a stage in front of hundreds of people).
Thanks HP, the only thing I know for sure is that I will not be buying another one of your products.

  • Battery and charging issues

I have a DROID X and have been having issues for the last few weeks with my phone staying charged and charging. I have had both my home and car chargers replaced. Everytime I charge my phone it says that it is charging bit the battery level does not improve. When I use my roommates charger it charges fine. Also the battery says I have a certain % of battery left then the next minute it goes down 10%andthat that happens whether it is charging or not. I don't know if a certain app could be causing this or if the phone is junk and I need to get it replaced. Its getting annoying that I have to charge it every night and can't be away from home because I wont have a charger. PLEASE HELP!!!

What app or type of app would you think could be causing the problem? I don't want to uninstall or factory reset my phone...if I wanted to do that I would just get a replacement phone. I do have an ATK on my phone...
From your home screen, press menu>settings>about phone>battery use (unless Moto moved it).  This will give you a list of apps with a percentage of how much battery they have used.  Also an app called system panel in the market will help you to monitor what  is using system resources.  I would also personally recommend uninstalling ATK, though not all users would agree with me.  Maybe try turning off autokill and see if that helps.  I do agree with dirkbonn, though, that it sounds like a bad charger,

  • New Mac Battery and Charger Issue

Ok today I got a new battery from the apple store for my macbook pro. Everything seems to work. As usual with any new battery I wanted to turn my macbook pro off and charge it fully. Well I went to charge it and the light on the indicator was red meaning charging. But all of a sudden the light turned to green. This I know is not correct because I know from when I was in the apple store, the battery was at 56%. So right now I am not charging it because I don't want to destroy this battery like my last one. is this a malfunction with my computer or charger?

If you have a charging problem, it's probably related to hardware rather than OS 10.4.x. So, suggest you post your question in the MacBook Pro forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=190 where other MBP users hang out.

  • Elitebook works on battery and charges it - but does not start with it (only starting on AC)

    Hey,
my 8460P only starts up when connected to AC power. Even with a fully charged battery it does not boot, i also have tested this with a replacement battery - but batteries are working on another Probook.
Strange: If I unplug the AC directly after powering ON, the 8460p continues running on battery.
    What exactly happens:
I have fully charged battery and no AC connected. I press the power button, the CPU fan makes noise (full throttle), LEDs are glowing: Wireless, Power and HDD. The DVD drive is initializing... and then after 3 seconds device shuts down - BUT the power LED keeps glowing.
If I then press the Power button once again, nothing happens.
But when I connect the AC back, the SCROLL LED glows for about 3-4 seconds and then turns off.
What I did already: The well-known hard reset (disconnect everything, hitting power 30seconds): no success.
Latest BIOS is installed. Factory defaults loaded... nothing. Played around with different BIOS settings (everything which sounds for "power" or "AC" tried...) nothing.
This is not OS related - so updating any drivers or software does not make sense.
    Further remarks:
Also from the sleep modes (hibernate or S3) it will not wake up from battery... again only when connected to AC!
    Any solution/idea? please support.
    Thanks a lot!
    regards,
    G

  • Battery and Charger Compatibility

I accidentally made a post in the G4 list instead of G3, so here it is again, if someone can help:
Years ago I needed a new battery for my old 12" 600MHz iBook. When I went to get it that particular battery was out of stock, but there were some in stock for 500MHz iBooks (also 12"). I was told I couldn't use the battery from the 500MHz iBook because each battery for each iBook was unique, and if I put the wrong combo in the battery might explode or catch fire.
Nowadays it looks like several manufacturers (and maybe Apple as well) are offering "generic" replacements, as in "this battery will work with all 12" iBooks from 500MHz to 900MHz...." and "this charger is compatible with < then a long list of iBooks, PowerBooks, etc>"
How compatible are these batteries? I have a 500MHz Dual USB iBook and a 600MHz 16VRAM iBook, and after seeing some of these ads, I decided to go ahead and experiment by swapping the batteries. Even though I was told previously the two were not compatible (they DO have completely different part numbers), they appear to work and charge in one another....The batteries have not exploded causing my house to burn in flames!!
Are a lot of these batteries compatible with one another? Is there a list of what can and cannot be interchanged? I know you can't use a battery for a 14" in a 12" and vice versa, but how about batteries/chargers for the various 12" iBooks?
    Thanks in advance!
Several Apples Mac OS X (10.4.11)

As Niel says, any same-size battery will work in either a G3 or G4 iBook, and, yes, I can confirm that the chargers are interchangeable as well.
