Hi
Did you try to make a BIOS upgrade?
As far as I know wrong BIOS upgrade procedure can damages the ROM module.
On the other hand the hardware malfunction can be a problem.
In this case only the service partner can solve this fault.
I propose to contact the Service partner.

  • Portege R100 won't boot from the HDD - missing operating system

    Hello,
I have a Portege R100 that won't boot from the HD, I get the message "missing operating system".
I don't have a compatible CD or floppy driver, I just have a 1.8 inch case for the hd, it works, i also have norton ghost 2003 installed in another computer (a toshiba satellite A45).
I tried to recover the disk using norton and the ghost image in the recovery cds but it keep asking for a password.
I would like to know if there is a way to use the recovery cds with norton and the usb driver and avoid the password screen (or where can I get the password?).
    Thanks!

Yes, I know that the recovery cds are password protected, that's the password I'm talking about.
I'm not trying to boot from a USB stick, I'm using ghost 2003, this way when I reboot the USB device is recognized as a second hard drive.
I have the option to use the cds to recover from the ghost enviroment but I would need the gho password.
What I would like to know is if there is a command line to force the cd to ghost the second driver instead of the first.
I'm not a great fan of norton ghost but I don't have another option, all cd drivers that I have are incompatible with Portege R100.
    Thanks,

  • Portege R100 will not turn on

I have a portege R100, I shut it down last night with no problems, but this morning it won't turn on. The power is connected and the battery light is on, but it just simply won't turn on.. Does anyone have any ideas?? Thank you..

  • Portege R100 freezes - is CPU fan defective?

I'v had Portege R100s for a long time, perhaps 7 years, I'm down to my last one.
I just came back to it after eating and the XP screen was just frozen, no mouse movement, CntrlAltDel did nothing. Press and Hold the power button did shut it down.
Now I can boot it up, but it freezes again in a very short time, a few minutes. I'm guessing that the procesor fan has stopped.
Does tht sound right to people, is it a realistic possibility to cannibalise the carcass of my previous one and fit the fan into my current unit?
    Thanks

Of course it could be related to the CPU issue.
If the CPU would not be cooled down properly then the system might stop to respond.
Are you sure that the cooling fan has stopped working?
If yes then the cooling module should be checked and replaced with the compatible one.
You cannot use any cooling modules. It has to be the compatible one.
But to be honest I think that the RAM modules should be checked too
In most cases an RAM problem is more realistic as an faulty cooling module
My old notebook stopped working because one of the RAM slot was faulty
I remove one module and the notebook worked using only one RAM module
However, I could not use it as I wanted and I bought new notebook.

  • Various Installation Problems with Portege R100 and Windows XP

    Hello,
i recently purchased a used Portege R100. It came without OS and i wanted to install XP SP2.
I know that restores only work with suited PCMCIA drives, but the HDD is formatted, so there is no recovery possible i guess.
    Here are my problems:
    - with my very old Freecom PCMCIA CD-Drive the Windows Setup CD is recognized and it starts loading XP drivers until it wants to start Copying the installiation files --> then I get the Windows Bluescreen with the 00x7 error (virus or driver)
    - the same happens with my old W2k Pro installation disk.
    - With the even older W98SE strange things occur too: The installation seems to work properly, but when it comes to boot with W98SE for the first time the systems hangs up with pixelgarbage.
    - Making the 6 Bootdisks with makeboot did not work either.
    - I also tried MS-DOS! And guess what! That worked! Loading the Freecom drivers and copying the Windows I386 folder to my hdd with volkov commander (something similar to NortonCommander) worked too! So i had hav the files on my disk but after running winnt in the i386 folder, the system hangs after a while, when it starts to copy files to a temporary folder.
So i nearly tried everything i know. right now i am downloading knoppix to try that.
I have run Memtest86 and the Diskmanager 9 to test RAM and HDD, both finished withut errors, so the main parts involed in the setup process seem to work. May it be that my IDE controller is broken?
I have no idea, WHY windows won't install!
    Help is warmly welcome!!
    Thanks,
    Christian
    Does

    Hello
    i fixed the problem:
The method of installing the i386 files to the DOS Disk and running winnt works. I was to impatient. Windows setup starts copying the files to a temporary folder. Nromally you see the info bottom right, waht files are copied at the moment. This is a good indicator that the system is still working.
My setup does not show waht files are copied to the temporary folder. But it still works. HDD is spinning all the time. Due to the "non-Sound" of the R100 i was sure it hung up. But it simly did not. After lets say 20 minutes, the setup process went on as usual....
Now i have XP in the R100 and all teh drivers installed. What a wonderfull notebook, really!
    Thanks for the hints anyway...

  • Portege R100: Recover from USB2.0 CD drive?

I need to reset my Portege R100 to the factory settings, erasing the hard disk and removing all documents and programs. I don't have a Toshiba CD-ROM drive, only a LaCie CD/DVD USB 2.0 drive. This has worked with other notebooks, but I can't get the R100 to boot off it.
    Does anyone have a suggestion???

    Hi soren,
maybe you know that you could boot from CD-ROM when you are pushing the "C" key for aprox. 3 secs when you push the power button. But this is only for internal solutions.
In your issue you could test if it works when you are pushing "U" key. "U" stands for USB device!
    Bye Hans

  • Portege R100 will not boot

Can anyone please help me. My Portege R100 will not boot, when i switch it on the following is displayed: in touch with tomorrow toshiba. after a few seconds a black screen appears with a flashing cursor on the left hand side of the screen.
    Many thanks

1> Easiest method to proove disk has failed...
take the disk out, held in by two screws and power on. If bios boot handler sees no disk then it will return "no system disk" message. If this message does not appear it isn't the disk.
2> (using usb floppy) Try a bootable floppy with fdisk. If no disk visible then the disk is dead. If disk is visible and partitions visible, check to see if windows parition is active. If partitions are not visible then the MFT may have become corrupted or overwritten (disks store backups of the MFT in special locations); as a last chance of hope it is possible to restore these.
3> (using pcmcia cd / usb cd) Try booting using a WindowsXP install CD and progress through recovery consoles scandisk.
4> In the event disk is trashed and you have sensitive data you can get an IDE adaptor and try pumping the data off using an NTFS recovery app.
... Alternatively you can use a write copy of Knoppix or disk commander to acheive similar gains.
    Good luck.

  • Portege R100 - OS installation with 16 bit bootable PCMCIA CD-Rom

    Hi All
Just wondering if any of you boffin's can advice on a very frustrating problem I am experiencing.
I am trying to re-install the recovery CD on a Portege R100, so far, with no success.
I have learnt that I need(ed) a 16-bit bootable pcm cdrom to do the job - upon obtaining a [LG] 16-bit bootable pcm drive I have found that it does not appear to be recognised at boot up, choosing boot from pcm does nothing, it just loads from HDD and I'm at a loss on how to progress.
I have spoken to Toshiba and Freecom, both of who advise any 16-bit bootable pcm cdrom should do the trick, they both confirmed they no longer manufacture or sell these devices and both suggested I source one from the likes of eBay.... anyone any ideas?

    Hi,
if you start Windows, will the drive then be recognised?
Have you tried to change the boot priority in BIOS?
    Bye

  • Display Driver Portege R100

Sometime when I use certain software applications, the images on my Portg R100 look distorted. Why does this happen?

Apparently there is a bug in the Display Driver in the Portege R100. You can update the PC with an improved Display Driver, V6.4823.104.22_2 to prevent this from happening.

My old portege r100 is not working at all.

    Error partioning drive!
    What does it mean?
What can i do to overcome it?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
It seems that HDD could not be partitioned properly.
Maybe the HDD is not ok?
Check if the HDD is recognized and listed in BIOS.
If the HDD is not listed, then the HDD is dead and should be replaced.
If the HDD is listed, then there could be a problem with the HDD partitions table
You could test the HDD using a tool called Drive Fitness Test.
You could also try to format the HDD firstly. You could attach this HDD to another computer using an USB HDD controller. This helps you to get access to the HDD and to format this drive

  • Portege R100 standby problem

    Dear friends,
I have a problem with my newly bought Portege R100. When I try to put it in stand by mode (or hybernate mode, for that matter), it starts the process and then stops it and displays an error message saying that it gets into conflict with the keyboard drive and I might need to update this.
Obviously when I try to update it, it does not show any update for keyboard drivers.
I was wondering if somebody has experienced the same problem and how you solved it.
    Thanks
    Riccardo

    Hey there ,
I believe the error message that you get is 'The device driver for the Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard device is preventing the machine from entering standby'
The solution for that will be either to update the Adobe Type Manager or to uninstall it if you are not using the application.
    Cheers

  • Cannot recover Portege R100

I have some problems with my Portege R100. The HDD was damaged so I bought another one, this one being already formatted .
    I also have two CD-drives:
    1. PCMCIA Card drive Toshiba PX1055E-1NST
    2. USB drive Toshiba PA3352U-1CD2
My problem is that the recovery doesnt work! I will just explain what the problem is:
I boot from the USB drive with the recovery disc 1 inside. My Laptop replys with:
    "Starting Windows 98
Microsoft RAMDrive version 3.06 virtual disk D:
    Disk size: 16,384k
    Sector size: 512 bytes
    Allocation unit: 16 sectors
    Directory entries: 64"
After this, the display tells me
"PC Card driver for external ATAPI-IDE Drives Rev: 2204"
    then,:
"ERROR: There is no PCCARD in socket A and B !
    PCCARD not initialized!!!"
    After a while:
"ATAPI-CD: ATAPI IDE CD-ROM Device Driver
    ATAPI-CD: Copyright (C) Freecom Technologies 1995-2001"
    After that in big letters:
    "NO CD/NET
    a:"
If i type "dir" then it shows the list of files. I think that means that the CD-Rom is working, isnt it?
Ive tried loads of things to get my laptop to work, but nothing seems to help. Someone from this chatroom explained using a normal USB-CD-Drive to boot with .
I tried different boot Floppies and different normal Windows XP versions. No success!!!
    What is wrong?
Im not a computer specialist as you can probably tell, and if someone is able to help me, please try to expain it for a person who is a computer beginner in that case.

    Howdy,
Just trying to rebuild an r100 today and couldn't find a definitive guide on how to use a generic CD/DVD-ROM drive so I thought I had better piece together what I've done this afternoon using an external USB HP CD/DVD-ROM combo drive and Panasonic DOS drivers ;) Tomorrow I'll be able to start the rebuild... finally.
*1. Install trial software to obtain the boot .img file from the boot sector of the Recovery Disks or compatible CD/DVD set*
I have used ISObuster that was mentioned on another site I found today
    Download: http://www.isobuster.com/isobusterdownload.php
*2. Install trial software to build the boot disk using the extracted files from the .img file*
    Reference: http://www.winimage.com/
I have used WinImage that was also mentioned on the same site
    Download: http://www.winimage.com/download.htm
*3. Download and save these DOS drivers from hiren's site for loading USB Support and USB CD-ROM while in DOS mode*
    Reference: http://www.hiren.info/downloads/dos-files
*usbaspi1.sys* - Panasonic Communications Co. ASPI Manager for USB mass-storage (Universal Driver)
    device=usbaspi1.sys /V [/E (EHCI USB 2.0) /O (OHCI USB 1.1 Add-on) /U (UHCI USB 1.1 Integrated)]
    *usbcd1.sys* - Panasonic USB CD-ROM Device Driver 1.0
    device=usbcd1.sys /d:MSCD000
*Save these files into the A:\DOS\ directory*
*4. Edit the config.sys that was created on the floppy disk in step 2. file with the following entries in this order*
    DEVICE=A:\DOS\usbaspi1.sys
    DEVICE=A:\DOS\USBCD1.SYS /d:USBCD001
*5. Edit the autoexec.bat file with the following entries*
    DEVICE \DOS\USBASPI1.SYS /D:USBASPI1 /P:320
    MSCDEX /d:USBCD001 /L:X /M:10
Note that /L:X has specified X as the drive letter for the CD-ROM
*6. Make sure to REM out the other MSCDEX entrys in the recover.bat file*
*7. In the Bios ensure that you have enabled Legacy USB support to detect the external USB floppy drive.*
*8. Connect the USB Floppy Drive and USB CD/DVD-ROM to the laptop and select the the floppy disk to boot from by holding down F2*
*9. All going well you will soon see a RECOVERY UTILITY with 3 options to get you started.*
On a side note, you will see on the hiren's site that there are a few other usbcd#.sys files that relate to different models... looking around the web you'll find that the guys at Panasonic compiled a universal driver for USB mass-storage back in the day and it seems to be the same for their CD/DVD-ROM driver in this case.
I dare say that this method can also be used for other models if you are having trouble with internal/faulty CD/DVD-ROM drives... so long as you have a set of the recovery disks.

  • Problems with RIS, Portege R100 and possibly XP SP2

    Hi,
I'm having problem with RIS on my Portege R100 when I try to install Windows XP SP2. I previously had a problem where it complained that I never had a the necessary network driver to use RIS, a quick search through the Intel Support website showed that there was a new .INF file that had to be placed in th i386 folder to enable RIS to work. When I now boot in PXE/RIS I get further, but only a little bit.
It seems to get all the necessary files until it says "Setup is starting Windows" and then displays the BSOD.
This is very frustrating as I have a number of laptops to build.
If you require anymore information please do not hesitate to ask.
    MartinD

    Hello Martin
If I understood you right you talk about Remote installation service. The problem is that Toshiba supports just OS. DOS is not supported but you should try to solve this on your own. I am pretty sure that it cans works somehow.
    Good luck!

  • Extended battery for Portege R100 in the UK

    Hello,
Hopefully the subject pretty much covers things but...
I have read that the R100 in America comes with an extended battery and was wondering if it is possible to buy one in the UK. I can't find anything online.
Also does the Portege R100 boot from USB at all?
    Many Thanks

This high capacity battery has part number PA3155U-1BRL. I don't have time to search it on Google but use this number in Google UK and I hope you will find some online store where you can order it.
About USB boot I cannot say much but when the notebook starts under Toshiba welcome screen you should see small symbols with all bootable devices. Check if USB is there.
Do you want to use USB external CD-Rom?
