Portege R100: Problems with Lacie USB2.0 CD/DVD Burner

Hello all, this is my first post here.
I will most likely be a regular here as i have just purchased an R100.
I'm having some trouble with an external drive i purchased specifically for the R100,
its a Lacie CD / DVD burner, model number: 300819EK.
This unit can be powered by AC or by using two usb ports.
I'm using two usb ports.
The R100 recognises the Lacie, and in the device manager list, the drive is then
listed, but it is listed as a Toshiba drive.
I'm assuming this Toshiba drive is the external drive you could purchase to use
with the R100.
The Lacie drive does work, but it seems the R100's preloaded CD / DVD
drivers are conflicting somehow and is making using the drive very hit and miss.
It often gets to around 20% of an install then hangs.
Is there an alternative driver i can download that i can overwrite the toshiba
drivers with?
Being so close to having the Lacie 100% functional means there is obviously a
way of overcoming the problems.
Hope you guys/gals can shed some light on this for me.
Thank you.

Hello Larry
You will be very lucky if anyone will be able to give you some precise explanation about that. I can just tell you the follow: the fact is that this model is created and tested to work with compatible Toshiba external devices. Because of that Toshiba built in all necessary drivers into preinstalled operating system. It should help fast and quick drive recognition and also installation.
It does not mean you MUST use Toshiba drives. Of course you can use what you want but only problem can be when you try to install OS. Toshiba recovery image contains drivers for Toshiba drives and recovery procedure will work without any problem because the external ODDs will be recognized immediately.
I recommend you to visit Lacie support page and check if you can find some driver there. Toshiba has nothing to do with it if you use some third part product.
It often gets to around 20% of an install then hangs sorry but I didnt understood what you want to say with it and what you mean with 20%. Second part of your posting is very confusing and I really dont know what you want to say.
Bye

    Hi
Well, I dont know if it helps but you can try to update your old BIOS.
I found on the Toshiba website the newest BIOS update from 30/09/05.
Furthermore please check the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Update information for this unit.

  • DVD Studio Pro will not burn DVD in Lacie D2 External DVD Burner

I ordered a new pack of DVD's. These are the Beall 16x DVD's I bought from Meritline.com. I had been using the 8x Beall's with no problem. I was told that my interal drive was not compatable with the faster burning DVDs. So I bought a LaCie D2 External DVD burner 16x. I still can't burn a dvd in dvd studio pro. I tried Patchburn. It said that this burner is already supported.
I am using DVD Studio Pro 2.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried burning on other types of brands when burning to your external LaCie? My company bought a NEC external DL burner and it only worked with some type of discs, Maxell DVD+R DL worked but Traxdata DVD+R DL and some other Noname disc didnt work, maybe try that?

  • Good experience with pioneer 111-d dvd burner

Just receieved and installed a pioneer 111-d dvd burner. I got this from
newegg for about $37 shipped. It was fairly easy to install and was plug and play(recognized by my computer) with no need to install drivers or patches.
Just burned a dvd under 5 minutes. My older pioneer 604 burner burned at 1 speed and it took about an hour to burn a dvd.

Finally discovered the cause of my problem. I sent the DVD burner back to Mac Sales and when they tested it they found it failed to pass. They sent me a replacement unit and now everything works fine.

  • I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. Starting on a new computer now. I can get my music from old computer?

I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. As of now i realize this was a mistake. Starting on a new computer now. I cant get my music to transfer from the itunes folder on the old computer? I keep getting error "Can't Read from the source file or disk." Whenever I got to folder properties its always checked read only. But when i play the song it works just fine. Im sure this is just because I added music into itunes folder but is there anyway to fix it?

WMA files are 'window media audio' files, which is a Microsoft format. If you want to add them to your iTunes library on your Mac then you will need to convert them into a compatible format first. If you still have your windows machine then iTunes for Windows can convert them from WMA to MP3 format : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24158701#24158701
Or try a search for, for example, 'convert wma to mp3' to find programs to convert them.

  • Problems with Lacie Drive

    Greetings all!
I am AGAIN having problems with my Lacie Big Disk. This thing has caused all sorts of problems on three separate occasions. This morning when I went to do some work in FCP, I noticed that I kept getting the "beachball" everytine I did anything. I went to the finder, and accessed the Big Disk from there, and got the same problem.
In the past Lacie had me do some things like repair permissions, etc. I did those things with no change. I then tried connecting through a FireWire 400 port. I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive. This seemed to work. However, when I did this, I suddenly got some REALLY strange results. All the files on the other drive kept failing! If I tried to open a photoshop file, I got errors. If I opened a DVD SP file, I got errors.
I turned off the Lacie drive, and suddenly the files on the other drive opened fine again!
    Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

One suggestion is to get a PCI firewire card, and create another bus.
I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive.
Some drives don't play well with other firewire devices, and you seem to have every port involved with one or more devices

  • Problem with "The Movies" game DVD

    Ok, here is my problem.
I bought the game "The Movies", at first it was working fine, but one evening, I tried to upload a movie and it just didn't do it. I tried 3 or 4 times, but I could never upload my movie.
So I stop trying and the day after when I tried to play, I put my DVD in my computer, when I tryed to play, it says put the DVD in the computer, but the DVD was already in, so I took it out, cleaned it and put it back, but then the DVD never appeared on the desktop.
I tried many other DVD/CD and everything works just fine.
Then I delete everything from the game (maybe I shouldn't have) and tried again, but nothing.
Later I learn that a Flip4Mac update was causing some problem with the game and I did something when installing a mod, I had the french version, but the .txt in the mod was in english, so I add, the english (en-UK) in a file.
Now, I rebought the game + the expansion (The Movies + The Movies Stunts & Effects, the english version this time) and the same thing is going on, the "The Movies" DVD won't appear on the desktop, but when I put "Stunts & Effects" in it works fine.
    What can I do?
    Please help.

How much free drive is on your Mac? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
Boot from your restore disk and make sure the boot disk is free of errors. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.

  • Network Problems with LaCie Firewire or USB Hub

    Hi Folks,
I have a recurring problem with my 27-Inch iMac mid-2010 running OSX 10.7.2 (had same problem with Snow Leopard before upgrading) where, when a Firewire device ( LA Cie HD) or a USB Hub is pluged-in the wired ethernet will not work on wake up from sleep.
I always have to cycle off my Cisco Router for the Mac to use the wired ethernet.
Does not happen with the WIFI and does not happen if there is no firewire device or USB hub pluged in.
Anyone seen this before? Anyone with an idea on how to resolve this?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts
    Dan

I picked up a 2big network a few days ago (to replace two Buffalo LinkStation Pros) and also have not been able to get an icon for the drive to appear on my mac desktop, despite being able to access the 2big through "Connect to Server." I hope to learn more from LaCie.
A successful workaround I'm using is to put the contents of each share on the 2big drive into a single folder in the share, make an alias of the folder in the share, and drag/copy the alias to the desktop of any machine needing access to the share. Admittedly a little kludgy, but easy to disseminate once set up. The desktop alias calls up the respective folder quite crisply, tested now for several machines on the network -- at least with up to ~40 Gb in a given folder/share so far. For reference, this network currently has 6 Mac and 3 Win XP nodes.

  • Problem with LaCie external HD

Have been using a LaCie 500 GB external HD hooked up to my iMac (OS X 10.8.2) via USB port for the past 4 months.  Use it with Time Machine.
Lately it has been disconnecting by itself ... and just a few days ago the backups started to fail too.  Using disk utility to check the LaCie says it needs to be repaired ... then says it can't be repaired, needs to be reformatted.
Tried changing it to another USB port (without doing anything else ot it) and now disk utility says it is ok and backups are working again.
Is this a problem with the USB port or with the external HD?  Any suggestions?

Thanks maurits ... I'll play around with it and try to figure it out.

  • Aperture performance problems with Lacie array

I have an iMac with 32GB memory and, due to space requirements, an external LaCie 2Big2 disk array, with 2 x 6GB disks in a RAID-1 (mirroring) configuration and attached via USB3.
This has in the past worked extremely quickly.  The iMac has a 1TB Fusion drive.
In recent weeks something has changed.  It now takes about a minute for Aperture to start up and open a library of photographs.  It used to take 3-4 seconds.  In the meantime I get a spinning beachball, but can happily use other applications. The manager software for the array says it's working fine.  I am more than a little puzzled and frustrated.
I'd appreciate suggestions on how to track down the root cause of the problem, and then how to fix it!
I am on the latest version of Mavericks, with no outstanding software updates.

    Dear Leonie
Thank you very much for your reply.  Here are the answers:
    What exactly has changed?
I don't know exactly. Something changes every day on a working system!  However I have not installed any new software or hardware.
Did this start after a software update?
Not that I am aware of.  In the last 30 days my only software updates have been Epson driver software, a digital RAW compatibility update to Aperture and a Safari update.  The Aperture update does not apply to any of the equipment I have.
Or after you moved the library to the Lacie Array?
No.  I should have been clearer.  The Lacie array was installed several months ago and has been working well.
    Did you import new photos?
I import new photos almost every day.  However I have several photo libraries and this problem occurs across all of them, even the ones unchanged for months or years.
      Did you enable Photo Stream?
         No
Does Aperture launch more quickly, if you hold down the Shift key while Aperture is launching?  This will defer the generation of previews.
If Aperture is launching more quickly this way, you may have imported a corrupted video or image file, that you need to find and to remove.
No.  I have just tested this.
    Other possible reasons:
Check the file system on your array. If the filesystem is not MacOS Extended (Journaled), you may have problems with ambigious filenames.
The file system is MacOS Extended (Journaled)
Do you have Photo Stream enabled? Aperture may be hanging while trying to load photos from My Photo Stream.
No, Photo Stream is not enabled.
Thank you again for your help.

  • Problem with reading Dual Layer DVDs.

I've a normal iBook G4 with a combo drive (it's the 1 Ghz model) and when I insert a dual layer dvd which I've made on another computer at school, the drive in my iBook won't read it (as in it spits it out). I was wondering if this problem extends to everyone else with a similar model/drive.
The media I used is a TDK DVD+R dual layer disc. The drive has had a problem reading a dual layered DVD-R; the problem being that it could only read (possibly) only one layer of the disc.
Is there a firmware update that can applied to rectify the problem?

Hi and thanks for your reply.
I'm actually not sure if I can read commerical dual layer DVDs, but the fact that the DVD was pressed and not burnt, and that the DVD is released for commercial purchase has lead me to believe that my drive can read the DVDs.
Also backing up my drive's ability to read dual layer DVDs, as mentioned in my previous post, is that it could read parts of a DVD-R dual layer DVD. What I meant by parts, or, just one of the two layers, is that the dvd contains a folder which houses 4 gigabytes of data, or about half the DVD. The contents within this folder can be copied to the hard drive, whereas the content on the root of the DVD can not, causing the drive to continually spin the disc, making the "trying really hard to read" noise, forcing me to restart the computer whilst holding the mouse button in order to get the dvd out.

  • A slightly different problem with aspect ratio and DVD Maker

I am converting VHS movies to DVD. All are 4:3. Using Microsoft Movie Maker, I create the desired final result, a WMV file that plays perfectly--aspect ratio, sound, whatever.
The problem comes when I use DVD Maker to create the DVD. The picture gets squeezed pretty much to a square (from the 4:3 original). DVD Maker correctly shows 4:3 as the desired ratio.
Ironically (considering the solution offered in several similar posts), when I convert that WMV file to AVI, and _then_ use DVD Maker, all appears fine. My only complaint at this point is that the result is "window-boxed." That is, there is large black space
    on all four sides.
I see nothing in DVD Maker to adjust (in hopes that the original WMV might work for me), but just thought I'd ask.

    Hi,
There’s similar thread discuss the DVD maker for 4:3 or 16:9 you can refer:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpromedia/thread/cd5edb7b-a4dd-43c9-ae95-20ac5692b2c6
And I find someone has submit it as a bug to our website, if our development team recognize it was a bug, they will fix it on next update.
    Thank you for your understanding.

  • How can I write dual DVDs with my UJ 820S DVD burner?

hello i own a satellite notebook, and my problem is that it cannot write at dual dvds, i believe that i have to upgrade the firmware but i cant find anything, recently i had the same problem with my desktop pc and solve it when i upgrade the firmware from its own nec dvd burner, anybody knows where i can find a firmware update, or something else to solve my problem?

    Hi Chris
The CD and DVD burning and reading with different drives is a never ending story.
I use an external burner and believe me; I have tested more than 10 different medias from different manufactures.
I could burn some medias but not read and read but not burn :(
I think you should also test different DVDs.
In my user manual I have found a list with compatible CD and DVD. Possibly you will also find the same supported media list in you preinstalled user manual.

  • Lacie Portable External dvd burner

Hi I am thinking about purchasing this dvd burner. Anyone use this and recomend it?

Hi, William. Since you say the drive works great, it seems unlikely that it's broken. Handle it gently, use it with pleasure, and call LaCie for help under your warranty if anything does go wrong.

  • P43-Neo Strange behaviour with LG IDE/PATA DVD Burner attached

Hello, I have spent several hours installing an OS on my new MSI P43 Neo-F v1.0 Bios v1.9:
    - 1x 1000 GB SATA HDD Seagate
    - 1x DVD Burner LG IDE/PATA HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-H42N Firmware RL01
    - 4GB OCZ Gold
    - MSI RX2600 Graphic Card
    - Bequit! Power Supply 350 Watt
Trying to boot from the DVD Drive works, but either XP not Vista could make it to the setup screen.
    - Vista stops after some seconds with an unexpected I/O error.
    - XP Setup just crashes and dumps register values.
Boot from USB memory stick (DVD still attached but no DVD in) lets you enter the setup and select the HDD as intall target. But, if you click "next" it gives you a message that Vista could not verify if a suitable system disk is installed.
I could only solve the problem by completely disconnecting the GSA-H42N DVD Burner from the IDE/PATA connector.
I could install Vista now from USB.
After Vista was installed I reconnected the GSA-H42N DVD Burner to the IDE/PATA connector and could install software etc.
Anyone being able to comment on this very strange behaviour ?
In conjunction with other boards I did not encounter issues like this with that LG DVD Burner.
It has shown that with the MSI P43 Neo F the LG GSA-H42N is unable to boot any CD/DVD. Linux for example stops booting with image crc check error.
I have now swapped the LG GSA-H42N with an GSA-H10N from my other machine and it can boot any CD/DVD from it - everything runs fine.
The LG GSA-H42N now runs with my other machine (with an Asrock P43 DE motherboard) also without any problems it can boot any CD/DVD from it
    Thank you,
