Portege R700-17Z - Upgrading to Windows 7 64bit

Hi,
I currently have a Toshiba Portege R700-17Z.
I want to increase the amount of RAM from 2GB to 8GB, and as a result I want to run Windows 64 bit. I was planning on running a clean reinstall, but is 64 bit Windows built into this machine? Or will I need a separate disk?
If I need a separate disk, any ideas on how to do this without an optical drive?
Many thanks!

At first info about RAM upgrade: You are right. You can upgrade your Portege up to 8GB and compatible 4GB modules have part number PA3677U-1M4G.
According notebook specification your Portege was delivered with WIN7 32BIT PROFESSIONAL but it is supported for Win7 64bit. 64bit drivers and Toshiba specific tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba download page.
What is your decision now? If you need some assistance with OS installation let us know.

Having in mind that my OS is Windows XP Professional, SP3, pelse be so kind and help me with a solution to revert to standard fonts.
I have deinstalled application, cleaned registries, reinstalled application from software package downloaded from Toshiba site,
    thank you,
    Best regards,

Can you please tell me which language do you use?
The whole story is somehow strange. I use Toshiba notebooks almost 10 years, have installed different stuff numerous times but I never saw something like this.

    Hi
I assume you are speaking about the fonts in the Internet Explorer window.
    Right?
Please check the option View in the menubar. Zoom should be set to 100% and Textsize should be set to medium.
Furthermore you can check the settings in control panel -> display -> Appearance tab
There you will find option called Font size. In my case its set to Normal.
    Try it out.

  • Satellite A500 overheating after upgrading to windows 64bit

    Hey,
I just upgraded to 64bit and my GPU temperature has been really high, around 60 degrees Celsius. It goes up to 107 when I run a game. When I had 32bit running I never had this problem, I could play any game without the laptop overheating. I thought at first it was a problem with drivers, or that im missing somthing.
I have updated bios, every single other driver that I could find for my laptop and repeatable reinstalled video card drivers with no change.
Now I have been trying to work out how to change the fan settings, I have noticed the fan starts running fast enough to hear at 55ish degrees and I want to decrease that setting aswells increase the fan speed.
I have tried Speedfan, and like 5 other programs where none of them worked.
I'm also afraid if I just reinstall 32bit that I will have the same problem since there might be some kind of driver or utility I have lost in the format.
Is there a way I can fix this problem? Is there a Toshiba utility or something I might have missed?
Is the A500 not compatible with 64bit? Can the fan settings be changed?
    Thanks in advance

Have you installed the Toshiba Value Added Package? It is an important package because it provides core hardware interfaces.
If it's still overheating, there may be dust buildup in the heatsink. You can remove the dust by using a Can of Compressed Air.
If it's still overheating after removing the dust, updating the BIOS, and testing it with the factory Windows installation, then it's probably a hardware problem. An authorized service provider can investigate the problem. There's an ASP list on the Toshiba website.

  • Portege R700 - Need drivers for Windows 7 32bit

    Hi there
I have the new R700 that I am developing a Windows 7 Enterprise build for and I cannot find the driver files or correct install programs for the 32bit version of the TOSHIBA Fingerprint Utility. I found the download for the R700 on the US site, and while this installs, it does not have the 32bit driver for the Fingerprint Scanner in the R700. Can someone either direct me to the correct download, or post the x86 download on the NZ site?
BTW - the x64 download works fine if I install Windows 7 Ent x64 and install it.
    Model number = PT311A-00J00Q
Component = Authen Tec Inc. AES1660
    PCI Device ID = USB\VID_08FF&PID_168B
    Thanks

Yeah I checked the European site too, and it had the exact same files as the US site. The AUS\NZ sites have nothing except a BIOS update (as you saw), and the x86 TFPU from the US and UK sites does not work - it does not have the correct PCI\VEN device id in the driver inf file.
In the meantime, while I was fiddling with the x64 build I noticed the x64 driver package has an x86 folder, and in there is the correct driver for the x86 build - which is just bizzare in my opinion. Why put the x86 driver in the x64 download package?
So I installed that on the Win 7 x86 build, and viola - the drivers are installed and everything works.
Now my problem is that I cannot silently install the TFPU without it rebooting. If you just run the setup, it installs then prompts for a reboot. If you use the /silent install switch it reboots automatically. Are there any other install switches I can use before I repackage this app to work correctly?
    Thanks

  • Portege R700 - Enrolling Fingerprints on Windows 7

I have been having issues trying to get the Fingerprint Utility to work on my new test laptop. I have created a new SCCM build and associated task sequence which includes the utility.
However when I launch the Fingerprint Utility for the first time the finger prompt pops up which I can't bypass to register any finger prints?
I am using the version 1.0.2.32 on Windows 7.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you read fingerprint setup details in the user manual mate?
In use, the fingerprint authentification system will use the same username and password as defined within the windows OS. If no windows password has been configured, you must do this before starting the fingerprint registration process.
Click on Start -> All Programs -> Toshiba Utilities -> Toshiba Fingerprint Utility of click on icon in the taskbar.
The enroll screen is displayed. Enter the current account password on the windows password field. If no windows password has been configured, you will be asked to configure the logon password. Then click next.
Click the non-enrolled finger icon above the finger you want to register and then click next
The note go enrollment operation screen is displayed. Conform the message and then click next.
Then the scanning practice screen is displayed. You are able to practice swiping (three times) your fingers to ensure you use the correct method. When you finished, click next.
Swipe three times with the same finger. If succeeds, message will appear. Then click OK
Further details you will find in user manual page 82

  • Portege R700-17Z bios not recognising USB devices

    Hi,
I'm after some advice about a problem I'm having with my R700, I can't get the laptop to recognise USB hard drives at the boot stage. I'm trying to use Acronis to create an image as I have 40 of these laptops.
The USB CD rom drive is recognised, and so is a Corsair USB pen (which unfortunately isn't big enough), but I have three USB hard drives (a Freecom Tough Drive, Buffalo MiniStation and a Western Digital Passport) and none of them are recognised by the BIOS. USB legacy emulation is enabled.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks, Karen

In the past many people have noticed the same problem. External HDD cannot be used as bootable device. Paolo is right, you can use USB stick, USB optical disc drives or old USB floppy disc drives.
In my opinion you should create recovery DVD using Acronis and use this disc for OS installation.

  • Portege R700 - Installed Power Saver on Windows 7 64bit

    Hi,
I was looking for a way to reduse fan noise on a Win7 Portege R700-174 and read to install "Power Saver" from the Toshiba support site.
Installation was OK, but I cannot use ist because Common Module is not installed. I get an error "Code: 0x2". I already understand that "Power Saver" and "Common Module" is not intended for windows 7. Why have I been able to install it anyway?
Now when I try to remove "Power Saver" i get yet another error and uninstall fails.
What can I do? Any help is appreciated!
    Regards
    Michael

    Hey,
Toshiba Common Modules and Power Saver are designed for Windows XP only! This software isnt compatible to Vista and Windows 7. In this case you have to install Value Added Package.
Anyway, not its too late and you must remove the installed software. If you get an error while uninstalling I would recommend using CCleaner to remove the programs. CCleaner can also uninstall all software that you have installed and its freeware tool. Do a Google search to download it and try uninstalling the Toshiba tools again.
    Check this!!!

  • Portege M700 rotation issues after upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit

I upgraded to windows 7 last night on my portege m700. It is Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I installed all the drivers under the Windows & 64 bit category on Toshiba's page. Everything works great except the screen will not properly rotate when put into tablet mode. I can push ctrl+alt+ arrow keys to rotate it, and I can also use windows mobility center to rotate 90 degrees at one time. I am wondering what I need to have it rotate once snapped into tablet mode, like it did in Vista. I have the Toshiba rotation utility installed but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. It seems like it is not receiving a signal from the monitor that it has been rotated.
I need this for school, so any help is GREATLY appreciated.

    Hi
I think there are not all Win 7 64boit drivers published and released for M700 and you will have to install also some drivers released for Vista 64bit!
    For example:
*Tablet PC Extension Package v 1.0.0.1 for Vista 64bit*
This driver package installs a range of important utilities.
_TOSHIBA Rotation Utility:_ Set the default screen orientation you want the system to use when switching from PC to Tablet mode, or vice-versa.
_TOSHIBA Tablet PC Buttons Driver:_ You can dedicate tablet buttons to performing common tasks so that you can easily operate your tablet computer when you're away from your workstation. For example, you can dedicate a button to open a program or to change your screen orientation.
_TOSHIBA Accelerometer Utilities:_ These Utilities are a set of hardware utilities that work with the motion sensors built into you machine. With the Accelerometer, your machine will be able to detect the way you are holding it at any given moment. You can set the machine to perform a specific function when the unit is quickly tilted to the left or right, or to the front or back. You can also take control of the cursor in some applications and make it move by leaning the PC in a certain direction.

  • My iPhone 4 will no longer back up in iTunes after my upgrade to Windows 7 64bit.

I used to have Windows XP 32bit and everything worked fine.
I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit and installed iTunes 64bit (I've also tried running the installer as administrator [in the compatibility properties]).
iTunes will recognise it with no problems and I can drag and drop anything I want to the iPhone, but I can't back up.
Software versions: iTunes v10.4.0.80, iPhone 4.3.5.
When I try to back up, the loading bar with either:
Have a loading bar with diagonal lines forever or,
it will start moving and freeze.
I've tried leaving the process for hours, but to no avail.
While the back up is being attempted, iTunes still retains full functionality.
I would exit by sliding the bar on my iPhone (iTunes will retain the loading bars as if frozen) and then unplug it. At this point iTunes takes a few seconds to drop the loading bar altogether, and the little screen will reset to normal functionality.
I believe this may be a iTunes-Windows thing as I did the following with my old laptop (Windows XP 32bit):
Installed iTunes for the first time.
Went into preferences and disabled the automatic backup option.
Plugged in the iPhone, right-click "back up".
The back up took less than 5 minutes.
I don't understand why my main PC can't back up my iPhone.
    Can anyone help please?
I've tried researching the same problems and I've ended up doing the following:
    Reinstalling iTunes,
Tried changing the iTunes installation folder to "Program Files" instead of "Program Files (x86)",
Deleting all contents from: "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup",
Deleting the apps from my phone in case there are corrupt apps (doesn't make sense though as it backed up fine on my old laptop).
    I would appreciate any suggestions!
    Kind regards,
    Will

    Hi there,
I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
    Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
    - deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
    - deleted backups from sync folder
    - created a new admin user and tried to sync
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
    - ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
    Any hints welcome,
    Cheers,
    Miguel-KA

  • Satellite A300D-15B - Upgrade from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit?

I've added an extra 4GB of memory to my Satellite A300D-15B (PSAKCE). When I try to run the Windows 7 64bit upgrade it fails with a blue screen.
Is it possible to upgrade this model to 64 bit Windows 7?

    Hi ronchennells,
Theoretically it should be possible to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit You can do/install everything what you want but the important point is drivers
On the official Toshiba website there are no Windows 7 64bit drivers but you can try the Vista 64bit drivers. Normally they are compatible
Generally speaking its not necessary to upgrade to 4GB RAM or more for using Windows 7 64bit. You can also use the 64bit version with 2GB only.
What happens if you start the upgrade with original memory module only?

  • P-35 Patuinum XP Pro 32BIT- To Upgrade to Windows 7 64Bit???

Hello and this what I have at present >
MSI P-35 Platinum MoBo/3.3GB DDR memory/Intel Core2 2.4 Q6600 CPU/ Nvidia GeForce PCI-e 8600GT-512MB /500GB Internal WD HDD/500GB Ext, WD HDD/WinXP SP2/ NERO 9/ recently purchased Pinnacle Studio MovieBoard PCI card that doesn't work with XP Pro 32Bit, SP2, that's one of the reasons I'd like to upgrade.
Technology can be expensive. Always changing. I would like to upgrade from XP PRO 32,to Windows 7- 64, granted, I would rather have 8GB memory for my MEM hungry Photoshop CS4, but because of my 32Bit OS, I can not. Is it worth it to upgrade to the 64Bit,then have to upgrade my 8600GT, then buy more Ram (I have 4 sticks @ 1GB each) will have to replace with 8GB.
Can anyone tell me if my optical CD/DVD drive swill be ok, or a non-issue?
    Epson NX300 Scanner/Printer all-in-one? Intel Core2 Quad 6600?
MSI P-35 Platinum MoBo? Will all this be a nightmare....OR stick to 32 Bit Windows7? If I build my own, I was thinking of getting the OEM system build version of Pro 7.
Change is scary...and can be very expensive as well. Took me a long tome to change from Windows 98 to XP, Love XP...will I love Windows 7?
I want to do video editing too. I bought the pinnacle Studio MovieBoard and studio12 software, but having issues with the capture..most tell me to upgrade to fix issues. I'm getting sound capture, but no video using composite connections to analog Camcorder.
I use the MSI Liveupdate utility for my MSO MoBo, but if I want to download drivers and save them on a flash drive to install after the clean install of Win7, I can get them all here @ MSI?
Are there any other peeps out there who just might happen to have my same board and is upgrading from WinXP/32 to Windows 7/64, and is there any thing I need to know?
( I went to download the Nvidia Geforce 8600GT driver from MSI, but under the list my model doesn't even come up?  8600GT #512-P2-N756-TR, I thought it better to get it from MSI since they are the Mobo maker as opposed to going to Geforce.  Does it matter?

Depending on hardware, you can expect somewhere between 2.5 ~ 3.5 GB of usable RAM.  The 32bit OS can address 4GB of address space.  Part of this address space is RAM, but also, the onboard components and VGA are in the address space.  Today's VGAs often have a large amount of video RAM and that eats into the address space.  If you have a VGA with 2GB of ram or a crossfire/SLI configuration, you can expect far less Physical RAM to be available in a 32bit OS.

  • Hi, I am running CC in 32 bits and planning to upgrade to Windows 8.1. Will I be able to upgrade CC to 64bit within my current membership ?

    Dear all
I read that LR 6 will not work on my current Windows 7 32 bits installation. So I am thinking about upgrading to Windows 8.1 (64 bits). I guess it will also be very beneficial for PS.
My question is: am I entitled to upgrade my CC to 64 bits with my current membership ?
    Thank you very much
    Michel

CC doesn't care for "bit-ness" as a licensing criteria. Users who already run 64 bit systems have access to all versions, including native 64bit as well as 32bit. thus you will simply install the programs just like on your current system with no extra hocuspocus and they will default to the 64bit versions where available. That being so, the bigger concern should be to have compatible versions of your plug-ins or any device drivers e.g. for printers.

  • Portege 7220 upgrade to Windows XP

What's the best way to upgrade to Windows XP? (now 98se)
Are there maybe people who already upgraded, or is there a manual to do this?
    Thx in advance
    Grard (The Netherlands)

    Hi
In my opinion you can start WXP CD von Microsoft under 98SE and there is option Check hardware compatibility. After that use Check my system automatically option. I am sure that almost all drivers can be found by WXP. It is possible that infrared and docking function can have some problems. Portege 7220 with WXP OS is not supported by Toshiba.
