Portege R830-10V - DVD drive makes strange sounds

Hi all,
I just bought this machine and registered the following issue:
If I put in a DVD the notebook starts to buzz very loud. This sound disappears if I put a finger on the drive. Furthermore the DVD drive starts to chatter if I press keys above the drive like the arrow keys. That bothers me very much.
I called the support of Toshiba and they said they can pick the notebook up. But it is possible that this service creates costs because maybe this problem is within the specification.
Do you have any ideas? What can I do?
Best regards
Denis

I tried it with several DVDs. It usualy happens with video DVDs but also with the Microsoft Windows 7 DVD for example. Self burned DVDs don't make that noise but they also don't move that fast. But anyway I can hear the drive when I press the arrow keys. And I'm blind so I use this keys a lot.
It sounds like the drive isn't fixed properly so I'll send the notebook back and I hope they kan do something. I think putting something under the drive or placing it a little bit higher should solve it but of cause I don't want to do something by myself.

  • DVD Drive makes strange noises

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that whenever I put it into sleep the DVD drive keeps trying to eject a disk that's not in there, and continues to keep trying every 30 sec or so, and won't stop until I open the lid again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have this same problem. The eject routine runs every 10 secs for 7 attempts and then rests. Every 5 mins or so, the routine will run again every 10 secs for 7 attempts. After 5 cycles, it will stop and then the cycles will resume at a frequency that I have not been able to determine. Not a functional problem, but certainly annoying and enough noise to wake me up.

  • My dvd drive makes an awful noise when inserting dvd, I have a macbook PRo

My dvd drive makes an awful noise when inserting a dvd. Does that means it needs to be replaced?

It's more like a grinding sound. I was trying to convert  the dvd with Mpeg Streamclip when it started , After that I tried with Handbrakes and got the same sound. I gave it  a rest and inserted another dvd and it was fine. Now I don't know what to do, looks like the drive is ok..

  • My cd/dvd drive makes sounds as if reading a disc, but there is no disc in it

    See title.
This occurs once every few minutes. I have never used the cd/dvd drive in the few days I own this laptop.

    Hey Lewistrick
This is probably normal. Sometimes, Windows or security software may try to access the drive for some reason, so the drive will "check" if there is a disc in there by moving things and making a slight sound.
As long as the notebook and the optical drive works normally otherwise, then there's nothing wrong with your unit! Good news!

  • DVD drive makes odd noise

Hello! I posted on this a couple of days ago but no one responded so I thought I would repost and reword what is going on.  I've had two HP Pavilion DV6 laptops from walmart and both of them have DVD drives that will make an odd noise randomly as if its trying to spin up a disc really quickly and then stops.  It sounds like it would if you ejected the drive then put it back in with nothing in it.  The first laptop did this almost every 5 min and this new one does it once or twice every half hour or so.  I've seen on another forum where different models like the d6 and dv6 have had this issue as well with no response from HP or anyone else.  Any ideas?

At this point, I highly recommend you contact HP Technical Phone Support .

  • Mac Mini won't start-up (while DVD drive makes mechanical noises).

Here is what is going on:
When I turn on my Mac Mini, the DVD drive starts making mechanical noises, exactly the kind of noise it makes while grabbing a CD. It keeps doing this for a while, until it stops. The hard drive never starts spinning and the display remains dark. I have tried the following:
    1) Booting from the Leopard DVD: the behavior remains almost the same. The DVD spins, the noises stop but nothing else happens.
    2) After manually removing the DVD (nothing else worked) I tried reseting the SMS. I also tried the PMU procedure. As a result my mac mini became a powerful fancy fan.
    3) After taking apart the unit (warranty period is over), I even changed the HD (I had another one) but the behavior remained the same.
I simply don't get it. I believe this happened after a power outage.

If it were me ... and if there is more free space on the external hard drive than there is "stuff" on the Mini that needs to be saved ... I would probably connect the Mini to the G5 with a firewire cable, connect the external to the G5, and startup the Mini in Target Disk Mode (which will mount it on the G5's desktop.) Then I'd rescue everything of value from the Mini's hard drive by copying it in small chunks to the external drive.
Then I'd shut everything down, disconnect the cables, and boot the the Mini from the Leopard disc and do a clean install. Then I'd bring the relevant data files back from the external drive.
(The actual details might vary slightly.)
(I see Nick had the same simultaneous thought -- though he expresses the process more clearly than I.)

  • Optical Drive makes funny sound?

I have Toast 10 loaded on my macbook, which I sometimes use to load .dmg's (as in to MOUNT a CD)
however I've noticed ever since I started doing this whenever my macbook starts up OR wakes up from sleep the optical drive make a "whirring" sound, the same sound as when I start up the App Toast, almost as if its NOW looking for optical media (to burn or otherwise) whether its there or not...
Is this sound not a good thing?

I found THIS...heres what some folks had to say about a self test, I think Toast instigates this self test and now it does it all the time...
These folks said not to worry...?

  • Harddisk makes strange sounds, as if head is slipping

    Hello,
My mac has been making ticking noises 6 months after I bought it. After reading the forums, it seemed that that isn't a terminal problem, and I chose not to send it in for repairs. However, every once in a while, what I assume to be the hard drive makes some sort of fluttering noise. The mac is still responsive, but it seems as if the head is slipping on the harddisk.
Any ideas what this could be?

like very very soft, very regular ping pong balls yes. I read on this forum that this model has some problems with the harddrive not being attached properly, and that the ticking was a result of this, and not an indication of hard drive failure.
The fluttering has me worried more. At first it sounded like a bug trapped in the casing, but it has been going on for too long for that to be the case.

  • Portege M200 - CD/DVD drive issue - error Code 39

I have a problem. I would like to perform a system recovery on my m200 tablet.
I have an external dvd drive (as the m200 does not have a built in drive), and the correct recovery disc.
However, due to a problem that occured some time ago, there is a problem with the driver (+Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.
The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)+), and so i cannot run the recovery.
If anybody knows a way that I can repair the driver, or another way to perform a system recovery, it would be extremely helpful!
A solution to one or both problems would be great.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi buddy
I think you try to boot from external driver which is not fully supported.
Please search in this forum for similar threads regarding the Protg M200 and booting from external CD/DVD drive.
    I searched and found this:
The M200 supports the Recovery via BIOS (pressing "C") with USB 2.0 and PCMCIA cards (16bit and Cardbus 32bit).
Following drives and Controllers (USB, PCMCIA) are compatible:
    a) Toshiba, PA3352E-SCD2, USB2.0 CD-RW/DVD-Rom Drive
    b) Toshiba, PA3402E-1DV2, Rev.501, USB2.0 DVD Super Multi Drive
    c) Toshiba, PX1055E-1NST with a PC Card (16bit), Cable II, PCMCIA,
    d) Toshiba, PX1055E-1NST with a CardBus, Cable II, CARD BUS
You could be not able to recover the notebook using other external drives.

  • G570 DVD Drive behaving strangely

    Hi,
I'm having terrible problems with the DVD drive in my G570. Although the drive shows in My Computer and Device Manager as working properly, when I put a CD in there is a lot of buzzing and whirring but after a few minutes of this it stops and says "Please insert a CD in the drive" and refuses to recognise that there is one in there already.
I have tried the following with no success:
Reinstalling the drivers for the the drive and ATAPI
    Deleting the drive and re-adding
Changing the drive letter in Disk Management
Removing the upper and lower filters in Regedit
    Uninstalling iTunes
None of these have worked and then, one day, I got fed up of this so used my spare external USB DVD drive and then, all of a sudden, the internal drive began to work. However, once I pulled the external drive out, the internal one started with its problems again.
Any ideas? I am at the end of my tether with this one and, in light of the weird USB drive thing, I don't want to replace the internal drive just in case it is a weird software problem.
    Thanks
    Paul C

  • Disc drive makes strange noises

I just got my macbook and from the very start whenever I insert a disc it makes a noise like its popping and breaking internally. the disc will play fine, but the sound is SO wrong that its worrying me. Has anyone else had this problem? Was it just something wrong with the disc drive?

I think what your hearing is the drive sorting itself out, mine makes quite a racket when you first put a disc in but its fine, i think it is standard across the range. To make sure it would be worth comparing to a friends or listen to one in a shop.
    Cheers.

    Hi there and welcome
If your computer is making a strange noise, it would be best to take it to an Apple Service Provider or Retail Store.
Unfortunately there is not much that you can do yourself, without voiding the warranty.
    Good luck
