Portege R830 - Forcing mobile broadband to use 3G/HSDPA with Win 8

Greetings all,
Upgraded my Portege R830 to Windows 8 with no problem.
Since most of the Wireless Manager functionality has been moved into Windows, I can't find where I can 'force' the connection to 3G/HSDPA.
I live in an area where the signal is marginal and if I leave the network settings as default, it frequently switches to the stronger EDGE connection. With Wireless Manager, I connected using only 3G/HSDPA where 2 bars were sufficient for daily tasks.
Any light bulb moments? (Moving is unfortunately not an option ... ;) )

Hmm I think such setting isnt available in Win 8.
Microsoft provides a nice article about the broadband configuration using Win 8 and the mentioned configuration isnt there:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/mobile-broadband-from-start-to-finish
So from my understanding the best broadband signal will be chosen and used if its available.,

    If not this:

    Also heating sometimes works. See:

Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up

If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

  • Add mobile broadband profile using netsh gives "Invalid Profile XML" error

We're trying to create an automated installation to upgrade to 8.1 Pro soon and since we have our own APN at our provider, we'd like to add this using a script. However when I try to add my XML profile using
netsh mbn add profile interface="Mobile broadband" name="profile.xml"
I receive the following error: Add Profile Failure: Invalid Profile XML.
I've found some Windows 7 topics regarding this issue, pointing at the encoded Subscriber and ICC id's in these XML files. I have already found the unencoded values with
netsh mbn show ready * and added them to the XML file, but still no dice :-(
    This is my XML file:

I've removed all existing mobile broadband profiles from the system, netsh mbn show profiles
shows an empty list so it's not a naming issue. I tried removing the XML version header from the file (a lot of examples of these XML files don't have it), leaving the Subscriber and/or ICC ID empty, removed them from the XML file but nothing seems to
    work.
Does anyone have some other suggestions?

    Hi,
I'm sorry for have no idea with your problem. Since those methods you tried but failed, in my opinion, it would be better to use Process Monitor to capture the trace of excuting this XML file.
Start Process Monitor, close as much unrelated process as possible, then run command to enable this XML file.
    After error occures, stop capture.

    Hi,
I have a Powerbuilder application that runs very well with Win XP and Oracle client 8 to 10.
With new computers (Win 7), we try to use instant client... but there are problems with accents ! In fact, all accents are replaced by a "¿" in the database.
It only appears when we are using our programs from a Win 7 machine with instant client.
Do you know if there is something to configure to solve this problem ?
    Best regards.

If the characters only appear on certain clients, then they are NOT being "replaced ... in the database".  What you are seeing is an issue with presentation, not data.

Hi @Eagle82 , and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are looking into installation options.  Due to the age of the printer, there is no HP software available.
You can, however, use an alternate driver to regain your basic print functions.  I am linking a document below with instructions on setting an alternate driver:

  • Using Cinema display with Win 8 Ultrabook?

Hello, can I use a Cinema HD display with a Lenovo U410 Ultrabook?  It has 4 USB ports and 1 HDMI.  Running Windows 8.  Thanks.

I am having this exact same problem.  2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB.  I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.  The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

  • Question about using TX FM with Win

I am using the MuVo TX FM 256 with Windows 98, and so I am using Windows Explorer to transfer files, (I have not installed Creative software). There's no "Safely Remove Hardware" item that I know of. Is there anything wrong with just removing the player from the USB dri've without "warning" the machine in any way? I've been doing it this way for about one week now, without problems that I can see, (though the LCD screen sometimes darkens upon removal).
Another question, though this one is not something I'm immediately concerned with:When I fast forward in an mp3 longer than 7 minutes, the time does not update, (it shows the same time), until I let it "play" again, at which time it reads the correct time. Since it reads the correct time at all times except when it's fast forwarding or rewinding, it's nothing more than an inconvenience. Btw, it's firmware ..0, and I'd rather not change it since this works well enough, after reading about some of the firmware problems.
    Joe

All the "safely remove" function does is shut the device down properly and close any program links with it.
If you aren't using the device at the time chances are things will be OK.

  • How do you overcome problems using Photoshop Elements with Win 7 and Eyefinity display?

I have a 3 screen Eyefinity setup on a PC running 64bit Win 7 with 16gb RAM and an AMD Radeon 7950 graphics card and Phenom II x4 processor.
I struggle to get a stable PSE10 to work on this setup.
I bought a combined set of Photoshop and Premier Elements 10 and although installed it always crashed when I saved images with the error message "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 has stopped working". I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 and decided I had to solve the Photoshop problem.
I installed Premier 64 bit version from disk 2 and Photoshop Elements from disk 1 and then ran compatability checker. Under compatability settings for Win XP srv pack 3 it starts although with some toolbar errors and top and bottom of screen transparent instead of solid. I can save files worked on but then still get the error when I exit Photoshop Elements.
Has anyone had similar and solved the problem? Tech Support said my s/w was too old and unsupported without a service contract.

There should be no need for compatibility mode; pse10 is designed to run on W7. Try making a direct shortcut for the Editor. You can then launch the program directly from the desktop bypassing the welcome screen. This is generally better as the welcome screen leaves background processes running.
Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
Then click the browse button and navigate to:
    "C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
Then click Next; then click Finish
To launch, try right-clicking on the new desktop icon and choose “Run As Administrator” which often improves stability.

  • Huawei E173 mobile broadband modem install - lost access to Internet

A few days ago I purchased the Huawei E173 mobile broadband USB modem ("Internet Stick") with SIMcard from Tchibo; they use the 3G+ network (HSPA/UMTS) from O2 in Germany.  I installed the modem with its "Mobile Partner" GUI in WinXP/SP3 on my Asus EeePC 1001R netbook and in WinXP/SP3 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and also installed the modem in Arch on the Dell laptop.
For the Arch install I followed the section "Easy Install using Network Manager" in the Archwiki "Huawei E220"; that was all that was needed, using NetworkManager, modemmanager and the Gnome network-manager-applet (nm-applet).
All went well: I successively and successfully used the modem and got on the net in WinXP on the netbook, then on WinXP on the laptop and finally in Arch on the laptop.  Then I tried to use it again in WinXP on the Asus netbook: no access to the Internet.  Tried it again in Arch: no access.  Tried it again in WinXP on the Dell: no access.
The symptoms were the same in all three cases: when the stick was inserted, the OS recognized it, it asked for and accepted the SIMcard PIN#,  established a link with the ISP access point - with excellent signal strength -, I was given an IP address in the 10.xx.xx.xx range, and according to the stick's LED, the connection alternated between being on an UMTS and HSPA net.  But no Internet access, neither in Firefox nor Chromium nor Opera, with and without firewalls or system proxies!  I was able to ping my own IP address but not the IP addresses of the standard gateway, DHCP server, and DNS servers, and some of these addresses were peculiar (I can provide more info on that).  And no luck pinging Google or Amazon, either with their hostnames or IP addresses.
A support call to Tchibo confirmed that there was no O2 net service outage in my area, that signal coverage ought to be excellent in my area, incl. for an HSPA connection, that my new account was active and in good order, there was no block on it and there was plenty of high-speed data capacity left in it.
So I exchanged the stick.  So far I've installed the new stick/SIMcard only in WinXP on the Asus netbook, with new cellphone # and PIN.  And everything is fine again; I'm back on the internet.
I don't want to be confined to browsing in Windows; Arch is where I do all my work and that's where I want to access the Internet as well.  But for nothing in the world do I want to go again through the ordeal of being completely locked out of the Internet and trying to troubleshoot this problem without access to it.  But I'm leery of using the new stick in Arch again and again experiencing the same lockout; I need to know what the cause of this problem was.
    I see several possibilities:
    1. Hardware failure of the first Huawei stick.
    2. Some network config setting might have gotten corrupted in going through two Windows and then the Linux install.
    3. Some account or network settings on the ISP side might have gotten corrupted.
Re 1: Seems highly unlikely to me; the stick I returned worked flawlessly for 24 hrs. and is probably still perfectly all right.
Re 2: Are such config settings stored on the SIM chip or elsewhere in the data storage section of the stick, so that they an incompatible setting might be carried over from one OS or install to another?
Re 3:  Tchibo already seem to have gotten confused over the uses of the stick in my two Windows installs.  When I installed it in WinXP on the Dell (after having installed it in WinXP on the Asus netbook), the data volume counter was reset, and they again started counting KB's from zero in the Dell WinXP install, but kept track of usage from the Asus install separately, in spite of the fact that there was only one account with them, and account identifiers such as cellphone # and SIMcard PIN# were identical in the two cases.  Further, they don't officially support Linux; perhaps their software got totally confused by the usage coming from NetManager in Linux.  But one would think that this stick would be completely portable from machine to machine and from OS to OS, just like a USB WLAN adapter.
Any thoughts about the cause of these problems, whether they might reoccur if I use the new stick in Arch, and how I can get around them?

    Regards
Thanks for the tip.  I'm very leery though of trying to use the new stick in Linux until I know exactly what caused the problem before because with the first stick it was after I'd used it in Linux (just once) that I lost internet connectivity in all three systems.  If that happens again, I'd be in the same hole as before: trying to troubleshoot a potentially complicated networking problem without access to the Internet.  Short of an expensive call to customer support of doubtful outcome that could cost me the price of the stick (not toll-free; costs 0.42 EUR/min), the only way out then may be to return the stick again and again set up a new account.  I doubt, they will go along with that.
Setting up the stick in Arch was actually the easiest thing.  After I'd installed networkmanager, modemmanager, nm-applet and some other bits (such as mobile-broadband-provider-info), it was all plug-and-play, and with these bits of software Arch automatically set up a mobile broadband connection to the ISP's server and I had an excellent Internet connection.  Only after I went back into WinXP, did I lose all Internet connectivity in all three systems, even though I still got a good link to the AP (persistent misconfiguration of GW, route, subnet mask, etc?).

  • Hauwei E156B Mobile Broadband USB Driver/Installation File

    Hello folks,
I just recently purchase a USB Keyfob for Mobile Broadband. The model number is E156B and it is manufactured by Huawei. I have search up and down Huawei's support forms and downloading multiple software bundles to no avail. I don't think Huawei even supports Mac OSX 106. Snow Leopard. In any case, I figure I would try one last time here to see if someone has successfully configured the E156B through "Tigo" with OS 10.6.2

I used a Huawei E169 Mobile Broadband Modem using a generic 3G Modem setup under Mac OS X 10.6.3.
This is how I set up the modem:
Open System Preferences window (from Apple menu)
    Open the Network Preference Pane.
Select the Huawei xxx Modem item from the list of network connections (there were two more Huawei items)
    Click on "Advanced" settings.
    Select "Generic" as Modem Manufacturer.
    Select the 3G Modem type.
enter the provider specific dial number (*99# in my case)
enter the provider specific ID and password (left blank in my case)
enter provider specific APN (in my case "Internet")
you need to check your providers specific settings for the above!
    Click on OK button.
    Activate Network setting
Choose to select modem in menue bar
    Close System Preferences Window...
To connect, go to the menu bar, click on the handset icon and choose to connect.
After use, disconnect as above (depending on your contract, time charges might apply)
    Good Luck

  • FIOS vs. Mobile Broadband

FIOS is now available to us. We have been using mobile broadband. Should we stay with mb or go to FIOS for $10.00 less a month? Which is more reliable in everything overall?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FiOs certainly offers much higher speeds than Mobile Broadband, especially on the uplink side. In addition FiOs probably has considerable capacity for growth. The bandwidth (and consequently capacity) for Mobile Broadband is more limited, and as more and more  high speed mobile devices make larger and larger demands on the Mobile Telephone networks, network congestion isn't a matter of if, it is when and how bad.
If you are talking EV-DO service from Verizon, it tops out at around 3mbps on the downlink, and about 1.8mbps on the uplink according to my reference, although your average speeds are large data transfers are likely to be considerably lower.
By contrast, a typical FiOS connection these days is probably 20mbps down, and 5mps uplink, and on large data transfers, I often see performance that is very close to rated speed. If you are willing to pay for it, you can actually have 50mbps up and down in most areas.
The other important difference is most Broadband Mobile plans have limits on total traffic with charges for exceeding the capacity that can be quite significant. By contrast, FiOS effectively has unlimited total traffic included in the standard price.
I haven't had any issues with FiOS reliability (my DSL however was dead if I could hear thunder), nor does weather seem to impact the performance at all.
What you haven't mentioned is which/whose broadband mobile plan are you comparing to which FiOS plan. The low end FiOS may not be materially faster than your  best broadband mobile connection, the upper backets of FiOS (some of which are not cheap) will leave mobile broadband in the dust.
