Portion of DVD Low Quality and Pixalated

I am burning a FCP project to dvd and a portion of the video is low quality, it looks significantly degraded and pixelated. It doesnt seem to loo this way in FCP. Colors are great, the picture is just has really chunky pixels. The rest of the project is fine, and its a weird because its a multi camera shoot, and all the different camera angles during the segment seem to be affected.
Any thoughts?

This post has helped alot. I think after reading peoples descriptions it is an encoding problem. Its MiniDV footage from a Panasonic DVX100. Tranfered via Firwire and edited in FCP. Then Exported as a Quicktime movie, with Current Settings, then put into a Dvd and selected as First Play.
I am convinced its not my footage, if I encode the dvd in iDVD the section in question looks fine, but artifacts appear in other sections. i have deleted and rebuilt all the render files several times. So I am in the process of using Compressor to output a mpeg2 file that I will use to build the dvd, instead o f just the straight export from FCP. I set it on Best Quality for a 90 minute dvd. I am hoping this will solve the problem, but not sure, will know tomorrow.
Any other thoughts.

Why is it that when I connect my iPhone 5S to my Windows Vista computer, the photos made with my iPhone are all of very low quality and most of them are turned upside down?
On another note, the iPhone tells me that it's ''busy'' when opening a photo on the computer.
(I tried restarting my PC, connecting via another USB port, importing using PhotoStream, etc...)

Are you using the front or rear camera? When you say they are low quality, are you referring to file/pixel size, or how the picture looks? As far as upside down, how are you holding the phone? Older versions of Windows have issues reading the Metadata from the pictures and will not display the same.

It changed the Aspect ratio of the video, as if it had been shot on a phone instead of a camera. When first looking at the footage it was in landscape aspect but when I transfered it to a memory unit to put on a different computer it uploaded it in a different ratio

  • Final rendering of video is low quality and too bright

Here is the link to my original video clip, the video clip in the project, and the final rendered copy all on my monitor at the same time:

Here is the text of each video when fullscreened screened:

The picture got downsised which makes it harder to see the issue, but here is most of the it:
The final copy is lower quality and way too bright. Noticibly too bright. The clean darks turn into rough gray, and the quality is noticibly lower as well. I have checked the "use maximum render quality" and tried exportiing in AVI and MP4, and nothing is fixing it. Any ideas?

First of all, what type of file do you need?  If you're looking for lossless quality then I would suggest exporting a quicktime file with the Animation codec or some other lossless codec.  However, these type of files are huge and they might not play back on your desktop.  But, if you're just going to put this video on the internet when you're finished with it then I would suggest starting with one of the Youtube or Vimeo H.264 presets and modifying it to match your clip.  It still won't look as good as your original, but you can't expect miracles when working in SD and exporting to H.264, which is a very lossy codec to begin with.  If you want to try exporting to a lossless Quicktime or AVI, then change the settings so they look something like this:

  • DVD Low Quality

    Hello.
I am importing images from my Nikon D70 but when i am exporting them as a DVD sldieshow the images appear jagged and at a low quality.
    Can anyone advise?

  • Export Settings for DVD - Low Quality

Exporting several Adobe Premiere Pro CC sequences to later import into Sony DVD Architect Pro. I have been trying the DVD MPEG-2 Progressive Widescreen export and getting poor results. The footage in my sequences is a mix of Canon XA10 footage, Digital Juice and Video Hive footage and After Effects titles.
None of the sequences (now chapters) look crisp or they seem stretched on DVD playback. It might just be because it is SD instead of HD, but all my lower thirds from After Effects look really blurry with artifacts. Other titles look much better.
    I've also tried
    1. Pulling sequences into a new 720x480 timeline, clicking Sale to Frame Size then exporting to DVD MPEG-2 Progressive Widescreen.
    2. Exporting sequences in AVI DV-NTSC Widescreen, then pulling into a new 720x480 timeline then exporting to DVD MPEG-2 Progressive Widescreen.
These tend to make the footage look smoother, but a bit blurry and After Effects lower thirds still look worse than anything else.
    THANK YOU for any help!

I had seen someone else recommend blurring the whole footage a bit. I have way too many text objects to apply blur to all of them (lots of chapters with nested sequences with lots of After Effects animated lower thirds). If the client feels test is too oversharpened I can circle back and give it a try. My co-worke says she can't notice it at all so it may be me working on it at the computer makes it more noticeable.
I really hate to "dumb" down the master HD source project though because I need to make exports to other formats too like Windows Media where that blur is probably unnecessary. Obviously I could make a copy of the whole project or duplicate sequences, but there are so many ongoing edits I fear I'd wind up editing two project files.
Also, the font is part of the finalized visual identity scheme so I can't swap it out.
Thanks for all your help today. If anyone else has experience with Premiere Pro and Sony DVD Architect I'd love your tips and tricks too.

  • Why is MP4 (MPEG4) Compression direct from FCP (vs from DVD) lower quality?

I am creating video podcasts and I have been fighting this issue for a couple weeks.
When I compress using mpeg4 directly from QuickTime I get unacceptable pixilation surrounding the subjects but when compress the same file from DVD using handbrake or iSquint it looks just fine. I am using the same settings.
Creating a DVD for each compression is silly work around. Does anybody have any advice here?
Note: when I compress using h.264 from FCP it looks fine, however I have decided against the h.264 codec at this time due to the processing toll it puts on the end user that can cause jumpy playback.
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5

I would rather use mp4 than h.264 and I have seen videos (eg. tikibartv) that look great with the mp4 codec.
Does anybody have any advice here?
I take it you've tried a workflow which emulates the site you referenced, such as...
File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In the Format drop-down, select MPEG-4
Click on the Options... button and...
    Alter Image Size to 320x240.
Change the Data Rate to 500
    Set Frame Rate to 15
Alter the Key Frame property to 75
    Click OK
After you've selected the right destination folder, go ahead and press Save.
This will produce a .mp4 file. If you want to make this a .mov file, change the extension in the Browser.
...and that hasn't given you the results you're looking for?

  • GE70 Nvidia issues, low quality and can't update

I've been having major issues with my brand new MSI GE70 laptop. When I run games like Skyrim and Civ 5 they look even worse than my old laptop, it automatically detects my graphics card as  and suggests the lowest settings and when I try to make them better I get "blocks" here and there, they don't run smoothly at all. Today I tried to update the drivers for the Nvidia card to version 320.49 and when I tried to it said it couldn't install because they couldn't detect I had the correct gpu. I'm so fed up with all this! I paid a pretty penny for this laptop and I expected it to perform well and my games look, as I said before, worse than on my old one.
Does anyone know what's wrong? And why I can't install the latest drivers? :(

Quote from: Nakednakedguy on 02-September-13, 10:03:15
The reason why you can't install the drivers is because MSI decided that the card would only be supported by drivers submitted by MSI.
You will need a modded .inf in order to install other drivers, which I can help you with if you follow these steps:
Go to: control panel - device manager - display adapters - right click on your GPU - properties - details - hardware ids and take a screenshot and upload it for me.
Is the laptop set to high performance? Download GPU-Z and choose "Show highest reading" on GPU core clock, GPU memory clock, GPU temperature, GPU load.
Play a game like skyrim with GPU-Z enabled and take a screenshot of the highest readings in sensors and upload.
Have you monitored the temperatures btw? The GPU could be throttling if the temps are too high.
Please don't give incorrect information to our users. THIS INFORMATION IS WRONG.
MSI's OEM GTX7XXM cards for laptops were not included in the 320.49 RELEASE driver, but are in the beta driver.
Most likely this user has a GE70 20X laptop, which will have one of the newer GTX7XXM series graphics cards in it, which is not supported by the most recent 320.49 RELEASE driver, but if you download the latest beta driver (326.49 I believe?) it should install just fine.
NOW, the real question is if the dedicated card is actually working properly. Is the dedicated NVidia card recognized in device manager? Is the driver installed correctly?
The games in question (Skyrim, Civ 5), are they using your dedicated NVidia card or the Intel Integrated GPU? What color is your power button during games?
Lastly, as Nakednakedguy asked, what are your GPU and CPU temperatures? The GPU and/or CPU could be throttling due to high temperatures as well.
Answer these few questions and we can go further in diagnosing your problem.

  • Slideshow - low photo quality and resolution

In AP3 and slideshow mode I have tried to make some slideshows, but the images are of low quality and resolution. I guess this is due to my previews setting of 1680 x 1680 with a quality level of 6. By increasing the preview settings to 2560 x 2560 and quality 9, the images in the slideshow seems ok. But the increase in quality increases the size of the library file. One can choose to only apply the increased quality settings only to the images in the slideshow and then go back to the preference and change to the default setting of lower quality, but I find this rather cumbersome. Any solutions to a faster workflow?

As you have figured out, Aperture unfortunately re-uses the Preview image settings for its slideshow images. There's not much we can do about that short of waiting for an upgrade to give us the same quality settings for Slideshows as it does for any other type of export. That said, however...
If you're concerned about Preview storage requirements (totally legit concern, since it affects preview loading time) the "Preview photo quality" setting you choose in Preferences->Previews can have a huge effect on file size without much perceptible change in quality at the higher settings. For most images, for instance, I can't tell the difference between a "quality 7" Preview and a "quality 10" Preview. Yet the difference in file size can be a factor of 10! That's much bigger change in file size than going from 70% to 100% in pixel resolution alone.
So I'd suggest you err on the side of larger resolution but (slightly) lower quality previews to retain maximum detail. Do your images typically reveal the difference between quality "9" and "7"?

  • Sending pictures on BBM gets lower size and quality

My friend has Bold 9000, and I have Bold 9700. When i send a picture to his bb through bbm, he recieves it in full size and quality, but when he sends me a picture from his bb to mine through bbm, i recieve it in a lower quality and size then the actual picture. we both are using the latest bbm. please help

Well before you uninstall the BlackBerry, you can create a backup using Desktop Manager.  Also you can wireless backup your BlackBerry Messenger contacts within BBM.
    To create a wireless backup:
    1. Open BlackBerry Messenger.
    2. Press the Menu key and choose Options.
    3. Scroll down to Contact List, and click on Backup.

  • IMovie HD (6.0.3) - Export Quality and Editing Question

Hi guys, i wanted to ask two questions. The first is that i wanted to export videos to upload onto YouTube and the best format for this seems to be the CD-ROM format that is available on the version i have, the only thing is my videos still appear low quality and pixellated even though i am editing good quality videos......i was wondering if i was doing anything wrong/or can do something better?
Also, when i am editing, can i place logos or maybe pictures onto the video e.g. with TV channels they have a logo at the corner of the screen. I also wanted to black out text on screen but i don't seem to be able to do that.
    Thanks a lot.

QuickTime has never supported anything more than "playback" of MPEG-1 formats and conversions to QuickTime formats will never include audio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-1 a "format" created a long time ago.
iMovie 7 can import and convert most MPEG-2 formats (DVD and HD media) and include audio. It also uses QuickTime for the work.
MPEG Streamclip does allow "batch" conversions. Do them while you sleep.

  • Imported Media Looks Low Quality - Why??

Hi. I just got Priemiere Elements 7.0, Before I was using Windows Movie Maker under Vista. When I import DVD movie files into that - they look just like on the DVD - really good quality. However I  just imported the same files into Premiere Elements and they look low quality and a bit blocky. What do I need to do to get them looking normal. Thank you very much
    Rich

    Rich,
What you are seeing in your workflow is twofold. WMP (Windows Media Player) is playing the MPEG-2 file directly, while the Preview in PE is playing a DV-AVI Type II file, which is what PE needs to work with. As you also found, the red line indicates that one needs to do a Render to get better playback. Also, if your Program Monitor is set to "Fit," the quality of playback (remember, this is just an emulation of the playback of the file), it will be slightly degraded. A setting of 100% will get you closer to what you will be seeing in final and should be used to judge the final output - though it is STILL just an emulation.
Now, the better workflow would be to go back to before that source DVD was created. The source footage will be better, as that DVD has been compressed to MPEG-2 and image data lost forever. You rip the MPEG-2 files to something else, or maybe directly to MPEG-2, then bring into PE, which will convert them into DV-AVI Type II. Though only slightly compressed, it cannot restore the lost data. Then, if you Export back to DVD, you are re-compressing to MPEG-2 once more. The quality of the original source footage will be many times better, if you can go back to it. If not, then you are stuck with the quality hit. The best that one can ever do is to use an editing program that will edit the MPEG-2 files natively, and not re-Transcode anything that has not been altered. However, most of these will offer limited editing functions.
What you are doing is akin to taking a film negative, and printing it to a "silk finished" 4x6 print, and then scanning that print to bring into Photoshop. It will never be as good, or as sharp, as that original negative. However, sometimes we just cannot go back to the source and have to live with what we've got.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS, I think that Steve addressed your other question. Let us know if you now have all the necessary info.

  • Is there a setting on 4S for high/low quality video?

I have a 4S and so does everyone I work with. If I send video to them, through iMessage, the video is clear and good quality. If they send video to me, or each other, (also through iMessage) it is low quality and poor looking. We have the same carrier, exact same phones, and they are even on the same account. We can't figure it out. The video will look clear on their camera roll, but will not be clear to the person who receives it on iMessage. It only looks clear when we send it from my specific phone. Is there some setting we don't know about?

I wish they would download in Apple Lossless, but I imagine most people really aren't that concerned about the sound quality by just want to get more songs on their iPod. Apple doesn't talk about what is going on internally or anything else so no one would know if this is being considered.
You can let Apple know you would like this available by going here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

  • REVISITED  "DVD: best quality" & "MPEG-2 high quality encode"-difference??

Re-explain: I see "DVD best quality" and "MPEG-2 high quality encode" have all the same settngs. Not sure if there was a difference. Yesterday I was convinced no difference. After recompressing the same video at same settings MPEG-2 HQ encoding took three times longer to compress. going to work with it--this was home work--to view on monitor that, after reviewing, made me come home to recompress.
So--again--is there a difference fo the two choices???

which is what I did and there is no difference in seetings or what I have to choose for seetings. So, I guess--or confirmed--there is no difference???

  • Make the Canvas window lower quality?

This is obviously be a newbie question so please dont flame me. I am editing using the Animation codec and its quite heave for my CPU so how can I lower the canvas (preview) screen's quality so that I can view it without dropping frames constantly?
In After Effects, I can easily set it to low quality and edit without any issues but I havent figured out how to do it in Final Cut Pro 6 yet.

That isn't the issue. The issue is that the ANIMATION codec is a high data rate codec. The canvas isn't your problem, the problem is the hard drive speed. You would need a 5-8 drive RAID to play this codec back without dropping frames.
You cannot compare AE to FCP...they play back differently. AE renders on the RAM before it plays back. FCP doesn't do this.
