Portrait Mode Lock / Orientation Sensor

If anyone from Apple is reading this, I have a suggestion for improving the iPhone user interface.
My wife and I are relatively new to our iPhones.  I frequently use the orientation sensor for photos, safari, email and other apps so that I can switch the display from landscape to portrait mode by tilting the phone to the appropriate orientation.  My wife saw me doing this and noted that her iPhone, identical to mine (4s) doesn't do that, and indeed, on examining it, it didn't.  I carefully went through the Settings dialog and the Settings|General dialog and any promising looking page below these and found nothing.  I assumed that the orientation sensor was broken, and we called up Verizon, from whom we bought our phones.
The (very helpful!) tech person at our local Verizon store had to look this one up, and it took him some time, but he finally located a software switch, accessible by double-tapping the home button - a "Portrait Mode Lock".
This is an OK location for such a control, along with a general volume control, but this switch should also be available from the Settings menu, along with brightness and other hardware-specific switches.  This is, after all a "hardware setting" and the Settings page is the logical place to look for it.  I would strongly suggest that whether or not this switch is left on the Phone Favorites line, it should be available from somewhere in the Settings page heirarchy.

No one from Apple is reading this forum, its just a user forum like you and I.

    My iPod is locked in the portrait mode, I have the portrait orientation unlocked, I restore it twice but no help.

    I'm surprised that the restore does not fix it, which leads me to think that one of two things is going on:
    One, your acceleromter has malfunctioned. The only fix for this that I know of is to take it to a Genius Bar at an Apple Store.
    Two, you might not be holding the iPod Touch properly to make orientation work. You have to hold it vertically when you turn it if you want the orientation to change. The iPod should not be parallel to the ground, but perpendicular.
    Three, you may misunderstand how to manage the orientation function. When you bring up the running apps tray at the bottom, do you see the lock in the middle of the circular arrow? If you do, the orientation is still locked. tap it to make the lock disappear, and then open an app and see if it changes orientation
    See the two images below for locked and unlocked statuses.

  • Locked portrait mode

    Does anyone know how to unlock the screen from portrait mode?The only app that works is utube.I can't turn the phone say reading the NY Times in Safari.It doesn't turn so I can read it the long way.It shows locked on the screen all the time.Or am I missing something here?Thanks.

    Double tap the home button, then swipe the bottom of the screen to the left.  The first icon is the lock icon.  Tap that icon, and the orientation lock should be disabled.  Repeat the steps if you ever want to enable it again.

  • [Android 4.3] Unlock screen orientation *always* turns to portrait mode - why?

    After booting the tablet, the unlock screen orientation is in landscape mode for some seconds but turns to portrait mode. And when screen turns off (or is turned off with the power button) the tablet wakes up in portrait mode - always. Very annoying, since I have to turn it 90°, enter my PIN, and turn it back again.
    Any help?

    So here is what I've found:
    - The installed lockscreen does support landscape mode. Since it is in landscape mode after booting the tablet for some seconds.
    - Some users report that editing build.prop and set 'lockscreen.rot_override = 1' should help. Didn't help in my case
    - Finally I bought a screen rotation lock app (Rotation Control). That did the trick.

  • Flex mobile orientation: force portrait mode and then allow auto orientation

    I'm creating a flex mobile project and I want to force the app to portrait orientation when I click a button, and when I click other button allow again to change the orientation.
    This is my code when I click the first button, where I want to force portrait mode:
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{      if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){           stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);           stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);      }else{           doSomething();      }  }
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{      doSomething();      stage.removeEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged); }
    private function doSomething():void{      stage.autoOrients = false; }
    It works ok and it changes the orientation if it's needed.
    Now, when I want to allow orientation change again, I've only putted:
    stage.autoOrients = true;
    It works ok if when I click the first button the app is in portrait and it doesn't have to change anything. But if it's on landscape and it have to change to portrait, when I allow orientation change again, it doesn't work ok.
    Do you know if I have to allow or change something? Or, is there any better way to do this?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your answer. It works, but I have the same problem that I have setting the orientation. If I'm on landscape, it changes to Portrait ok, but when I want to allow auto orientation again, it doesn't work well.
    A little tricky I've found is:
    When I want to force to portrait:
    private var oldOrientation:String = null;
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{
       if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){
                oldOrientation = stage.orientation;
                stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);
                stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);
       }else{
                doSomething();
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{
                // do something if you are changing to portrait mode (the first change) and other thing if you are changing to old orientation
    And when I want to allow auto orientation again:
    if(oldOrientation != null){
            stage.setOrientation(oldOrientation);
            oldOrientation = null;

  • Iphone 6 won't lock into landscape mode, keep switching back to portrait mode

    Hi,
    Please help me, this has driven me nut, I can't seem to lock my iphone 6 into landscape mode, it will only lock my screen when I am in portrait mode.
    For example, if I open safari and turn my phone sideway, safari would turn into landscape mode, and if I want to lock my screen to keep it in landscape mode, it won't do it, as soon as I select that screen lock button, it will turn back to portrait mode and lock my screen up into portrait mode.
    What should I do to keep my screen lock at landscape mode??? I have tried this with several apps and the same thing happen, like in Calculator, when I turn it sideway and try to lock it, it goes right back to portrait mode.
    I restored my iPhone 6 from my iPhone 5c so just wonder if it has anything to do with that or just some bugs in iOS8???
    My current display is in Standard and not Zoom display, and I even try to set it as Zoom and then reset it back to Standard to try to see if it works and it still doesn't work.
    HELP ME!!!!

    I Just spent over an hour with support on this issue and apparently in iOS 8 they removed the option for the phones to lock in landscape mode. So, there is nothing wrong with your phone, unfortunately they removed a very useful feature.  Maybe they will see if enough users want it they will fix it in an update.

  • Lock portrait mode

    Greetings,
    Perhaps I'm missing something, I've looked for it anywhere I could think. How do you lock portrait mode on this phone? I disabling auto rotate doesn't keep your phone from going into landscape mode. It's a very basic functionality that I'm desperately missing.

    There's no setting in the phone that allows you to force portrait mode. Even if you turn off auto rotation under Settings -> Display an app may switch to landscape. many games do this for example but if you place the phone in the docking station it will also rotate.
    There are some 3:rd party apps that can force portrait like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.eyesfree.setorientation but if you try to run an app that's designed for landscape it might not work properly.

  • My IPAD 2 is locked in the portrait mode I am unable to unlock it what do I do?

    My IPad is locked in the portrait mode.  All of the Icons are upside down (at the home buttton). OS is 5.0.1.  I can see a half circle with a lock in it.I have tried to double click this loc and nothing happens.  Under the Lock Rotation the side switch is set to mute.  Multitasking gesutres is on.  Anyone have any suggustions?
    [email protected]

    As there is a lock symbol at the top of the screen then you have rotation lock on, and as the side switch is controlling notification mute, then you should be able to lock/unlock the rotation via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Non-TouchPad games locked into portrait mode

    Since the recent app market update newly installed non-TouchPad games display in portrait mode only, even though they are landscape games. e.g. Angry Birds Seasons I've reproduced this with two TouchPads The first instance was installing the games for the first time after the market update--Angry Birds Seasons, Dead Runner, and Glow Hockey all had problem even though they worked properly on my other TouchPad in which I installed the games before the market update. Tested the theory by uninstalling Angry Birds Seasons & Dead Runner from the TachPad on which they were working properly then re-installed them = loaded in portrait mode only = new market update broke non-TouchPad games that did work with the TouchPad prior.
    Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

    I have loaded Angry Birds seasons to test this issue. I am able to reproduce this issue and I will be forwarding this to our engineering group for a solution.

  • Start app in landscape mode locked and later enable autoOrients

    Hi!
    I want to start my app in landscape mode locked and when an effect finished unlocks autorients to true and the user can change the orientation.of the device.
    I have tried few things but i can't get it. My descriptor file contains:
    <aspectRatio>landscape</aspectRatio>
    <autoOrients>false</autoOrients>
    And in my code when the effect is finished:
    stage.autoOrients = true
    When i play my app in desktop it run but later running it in a phisichal device (playbook) orientation its ever locked.
    ¿Is posible lock orientation (and force landscape mode) and later unlock orientation?
    Thanks so much!

    You should be able to do this now (AIR 2.6). The Stage.autoOrients property used to be read-only, but now it is writable. The main gotcha is that when you set Stage.autoOrients to false, the exact result is device-dependent. You might have it lock to the current orientation, or it might switch to the device default orientation and lock to that (you can still use setOrientation() to change, though). In my limited testing (3 devices), it has always done the latter (portrait is the default on phones, landscape on tablets).

  • Showing pictures iphone 4 only portrait mode

    Hi, when I look at pictures in my Ipone 4 they only show up in portrait mode. It vill not work "turning the phone" showing the pictures in landscape. This goes as well for writing sms etc, only possible in portrait mode. ANy idea about the problem and how to solve it?

    Orientation lock is most likely on. Double tap the home button...swipe left to right...far left is the orientation lock button...tap on/off.

  • Rotate display for portrait mode?

    I'd like to rotate the display orientation on my 15" MBP so that I can read documents in portrait mode while holding the laptop sideways. I found some tips instructing me to hold the option key down while selecting the displays pane in system preferences but that doesn't seem to work.
    I found SMSRotateD which is a little demo that rotates the display using the sudden motion sensor:
    http://www.osxbook.com/software/sms/smsrotated/
    It does successfully rotate the display 90 degrees, but it works erratically and won't stay in one orientation for long. I'd rather do this without the SMS. Can anyone tell me how?

    I do though hesitate to rotate the whole body of the machine. Functioning vertically may not be the best of things to do. At least back 10 years ago, and I don't know if it is true now, shifting the drive from the position it was formatted in relative to gravity to a different one for use without reformatting it can shorten the length of the hard drive. This was the case with the drives on some PowerMac 6500s which were formatted vertically and placed horizontally elsewhere.
    Whether or not you can do that with notebook drives regularly, remains to be seen. I'd say it would be better to get an external display that supports the rotation.

    After attempting to watch a video, the iPad stayed stuck in landscape mode. None of the following helped: turning on & off, attempting to sync, shaking it around, using different apps. Make sure the Screen Rotation Lock button on the side isn't locked.
