Portrait oriented images in Picture Book theme

I am starting to put together my first trial book and so far haven't found a way to insert a portrait image into the (landscape) Picture Book layout.
Is the only possible method to create a new landscape image in Photoshop with a portrait image within it. Or is there a more straightforward method?
Many thanks
Richard Lewisohn

Jerome, I think I've worked this out now. Previously I had tried to double click an image in the book layout but the handles to drag the image to a different aspect ration hadn't appeared. Also the 'Photo Box Aspect Ratio' buttons were grayed out.
Anyway, now the handles have some appeared!
Next of all I'll investigate proofing with your suggested profile.
Kind regards
Richard

  • Size of portrait-orientation images in Flash gallery

I've created a website using Lightroom. It uses the Flash engine with the "Paginate" option. I specified "large" for both thumbnails and images. With the monitor resolution set at 1280 by 1024, there are 200 pictures in the gallery, and these are displayed on the left-hand part of the screen as ten pages of 20 pictures each (4 columns, 5 rows).
When in gallery view (which is the default) any portrait-orientation images on the right-hand half of the screen are a bit smaller than I'd like; they're the same height as landscape-orientation images. If, however, I switch to the slideshow view, portrait-orientation images are displayed larger, using the available space more effectively. What's weird is that if I switch back to the gallery view, the portrait-orientation images are still displayed as they were under the slideshow. (The same thing happens under IE and Firefox.)
So, if I run the website without using the slideshow button, portrait-orientation images are one size (too small in my opinion). But if I click the slideshow button and immediately click the same button to go back to the gallery view, the portrait-orientation images are displayed at a larger, more appropriate, size. This change seems to be sticky; even portrait-orientation images that I haven't previously viewed are displayed at the larger size once I've switched to the slideshow and back again. (But refreshing the web page resets everything back to its original state.)
It's not a great problem, but it's a bit weird.

(Thanks for the reply and sorry for not responding more quickly.)
I don't think it's cache-related; I can clear the cache and it makes no difference to the behaviour.
It seems as if the flash module calculates the best-fit size and gets a different result depending on whether or not I've visited the slideshow view, even though I'm in the gallery view and the amount of available screen space in the gallery view hasn't changed just because I've visited the slideshow view and come back again.
As I say, it's not a big problem; it's just a bit weird.

  • Iphoto won't display Portrait Orientated images, how can i fix this?

Iphoto'11 on latest OS wont display Portrait Orientated images, only just occured and only shows the image when in 'EDIT'. how can i remedy my thumbnails as it wont allow me to print anything but a blank screen

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Picture Book theme - why has my book printed with text box outlines showing? and how do I change this for any future purchases? This did not occur with previous books.

Why have borders appeared around the text boxes in the Picture Book theme and how do I change them for the future.  My latest book looks dreadful!

Have you checked, if your book is really set to the "Photos" Theme? This looks like you may have used one of the "Travel" themes. These themes create borders around the text boxes. When you select a theme, the book title will say "Photos", even if the theme is a different one.
For example, frames text boxes with the "travel" theme.
Have you previewed your book, before printing it? Did the framed boxes already show in the preview?

  • I have trouble with the iPhoto 9.4.1, there is no picture book themes ? how can I resolve that ???

How can I see themes for photo books ?

The themes should be located in the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder.  Did you purchase iPhoto 9.4.1 from the App Store?  If so try moving the iPhoto app to a folder in the Applicaitons folder and then re-download and install iPhoto 9.4.1.
If that doesn't work download the iPhoto 9.4.1 updater from the link i provided and see if it will run.  Again, if not then use  Pacifist to install iPhoto 9.4.1 and the supporting files from the updater file.
Be sure to have your current iPhoto 9.4.1 in the Applications folder as it is not.

  • Book themes picture book / modern lines

I was an advid iphoto book user. However, I was annoyed by the inability to modify themes or adjust picture box to deal with aspect ratios and et al. Aperture gives me that flexibility. However, I am struggling. The picture book theme is quite different in aperture. You must only do one pic per page. Its more geared to a professional photographer type picture book. I really like the consumer version of the picture book with more control. I think the closest is Modern lines. I think? Anyone know what I am talking about? Also, the theme formal is neat, but I can't seem to be able to change picture box size -- I can only move it. On a different theme, I could grab the box edges. How do you make picture size different?

    Hello,
Disregard the above, as I was thinking of Photo Essay, try this instead.
    Sorry.
Picture Book does require a bit of arm wrestling.
When you click on a page in the page thumbnail viewer, you should get a "down" arrow, in a lightgrey box. If you click on that you will be able to change the page to suit a limited number of layouts. Picture book only gives you full pages as you said,
But you can also get to this from the cute little icon next to the + and - in the bottom righthand corner, that looks like a page with horizontal and vertical lines The tool tip calls it "Set Master Page". You will also find the current page layout has a check mark alongside it so you can work out what is current, and then choose.
To change the size of a picture box on a specific page At the Top RHS of the Main page viewer, are two buttons
Edit Content Lets you drag and drop your selected images
    and
Edit Layout Which should give you handles around a selected box and you can drag to any size. So resize the box to suit your requirements. Then Right click to get some options. Duplicate. (copy is cool, but you don't get a paste!). Drag the duplicate across the page and resize, or dupe again etc. Hard work, but it can be easy to create the exact page layout you want.
Edit Layout also works on text boxes and tags.
I use the picture book and modify it as needed for client work. Each is different, and so I can take the time to get it right. It would be nice Mr Apple if we could also modify the background colours, see the little color checker icon on the top near the edit boxes, but in this layout only uses black and white. (as befits a great picture book.)
I also like to do the same sort of thing with the Photo Essay theme as the boxes are moveable and resizable.
    Good luck

  • Screensaver Portrait Orientation

Since updating to Leopard my Portrait (vertical) photos are displayed horizontally. I've searched this forum, googled it, and checked my "Missing Manual" and can't find an help. Can anyone tell me how to correct this so it displays correctly?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

For ScreenSavers you need to save as JPEGs but your Monitor is almost certainly in landscape format. (A few monitors do allow you to re-orient them and mount them in Portrait format.)
If you want to use Portrait-format images as ScreenSavers you may find that you need to save each image as a landscape shape (1024 x 768 pixels RGB JPEGs) with your photograph centered on a colored or textured background.
(I have not tried using portrait-oriented images as screen-savers so this is just a guess and you will have to experiment to see what works.)
The JPEGs that I have used as screen-savers have always been created in Photoshop and never in either Preview or iPhoto.

  • IPhoto Picture Book larger than 28 x22cm - how do I specify?

A few years ago, I made an iPhoto book using the Picture Book theme that was larger than 28x22cm. Now, when I try to order a book, I am only able to choose within the Picture Book theme from the hard, soft and wire bound options, and I don't have any ability to change the size of the book. I'm ordering from NZ.
Does anyone know whether there is any way to buy a larger book using Picture Book? Does another theme give you that option?
    Thanks so much!

  • Cropping error with picture book page type 2

Hi, I'm trying to layout my first book in iPhoto and am running into a problem with one particular page layout. Whenever I have two tall pictures on a page, iPhoto chops off a large part of the side of the photo. If I select "Fit Photo to Frame Size" the photo is shoved to the edge of the frame boundary and still doesn't show the missing part of the photo.
Has anybody else run into this problem before?
    I'm using iPhoto 5.0.4 (263)
I have the same problem with both the classic picture book theme and the newer version.

    Eric:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are they both cropped to the recommended 4:3 book constrain? If they aren't that may be the reason. The frames are designed for 4:3 photos and will fill the frame precisely with them. If the photo is a different size one of the dimensions will suffer.

  • I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • Images with "Portrait" orientation are stretched out

I've taken photos with "portrait" (vs landscape) orientation with my camera then imported them in iPhoto. Then, I've rotated them in iPhoto so that they display with the correct orientation (i.e vertically), and everything so far looks OK.
However, when I try to build up a slideshow with iDVD, those portrait oriented photos are stretched out sideways in order to fill out the displaying frame (I would have expected them to show as in iPhoto with a black band on each side) .
I've read in the iDVD Help that this may happen whenever landscape AND portrait pictures are mixed together in the same slideshow. So, I carefully isolated each set of photos but with no success.
From what I've read in the iDVD forum, it seems that this is a recurrent problem no matter which iDVD or iPhoto version is used (I use iDVD 3 and iPhoto 2).
    Thank for any help.
    1.8 Ghz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well, I tried to use iDVD without reading the tutorial and I confused the drop zone and the slideshow.
Actually, when you drop more than one photo into the drop zone, the width over the height ratio is determined by the first picture. Whenever the first photo is landscape oriented, any subsequent portrait photo appears stretched out. Conversely, if the first photo is portrait oriented, then the following landscape photos will be squeezed.
In any case, the slideshow itself is always displayed correctly.

There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:

Appears a community host moved your earlier post into one of the iBooks Author or Store sections
after I'd replied to what otherwise may be a similar post. Not sure if the links to the Discussions area
of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

In my reply to your earlier thread, prior to it being moved, those links to sections of iBooks Author, etc
are posted. You can also find them from the main Apple Support Communities page.
Sorry to not be of much help in this matter.

  • How do you add pictures instead of video into the comic book theme?

I'm doing a project for school and I have to use the comic book theme in iMovie. In the box above the text where you would usually add a movie or video, I want to put photos. How do I do that? Thanks

Does it allow you to drag a photo into that window? Try it with a picture out of iPhoto maybe and see if it will allow you to drop it into the placeholder area.

  • Image size when sharing portrait orientation in CC

Is there any way to over ride the behavior of CC when sharing images with a portrait orientation? By default it fits the image to the height of the browser window, even when it's expanded to full page. The result is a REDUCTION in image size if you want to share an image that is taller than it is wide.

Usually Images display "fit to screen" by default in my browser. If I click on an over-sized image, it goes to actual size.
There I can scroll around. So I'm guessing you want a 100% or "fit width" default?
Anyway it is the Image > Image Size command that resizes or changes pixel dimensions in Photoshop.
If you send your images to other users, they can zoom in and out to view no matter the size.
