Portrait photo orientation issue when viewed in slideshow

I have experienced this problem since first upgrading to 8.0. I have upgraded to 8.02, but this problem persists.
Most (but not all) of my portrait photos display incorrectly during slideshows (but display correctly otherwise). The pictures are rotated 90 degrees and are squished vertically and stretched horizontally. The result are pictures that fill a portrait oriented "frame" but are sideways, squat and stretched width-wise.
As near as I can tell, all my photos that I took with my digital cameras (all Canons of various models) have this problem, while only some photos I have received from friends have this issue. Perhaps it is an issue with iPhoto reading Canon's orientation flag? But why is it only a problem in slideshows?
I'm uncertain if this is relevant, but I've also noticed none of my portrait photos display properly when viewed via Front Row.
So far the only trouble shooting ideas I've been able to think of are:
1 - Remake my slideshows from scratch
2 - Rebuild my photo library.
Neither of these fixed my problem. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Try quitting iPhoto and trashing your iPhoto preferences file ("your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> con.apple.iPhoto.plist) when you launch iPhoto a new default one will be created - reset any user preferences you have changed and repoint iPhoto to the library if you have moved it

  • Photo Orientation Incorrect When Viewing MobileMe

I've tried to find a solution to this by searching other posts. What I've found is this is not a new problem. I have two AppleTVs and I have the same problem on both units.
But this is the real oddity. The photos not only display correctly orientated when viewed through a browser on both a Mac and iPhone (as well as the MyGallary app), but they also display correctly on AppleTV when previewing (as they carousel) while in the applicable onscreen navigation menus, and when they are displayed as a screen saver set to "Floating". However, if directly viewing in slideshow or when the screen saver is set to "Slideshow" the orientation is all messed up. And the current photos I'm view where also all taken with an iPhone and uploaded directly to the users MobileMe account.
And on top of all that, when I viewed the first 4-5 photos on AppleTV (now up to 15 photos) they displayed in the correct orientation. Now some of those that did display correctly are messed up.
How can the preview and floating screensaver correctly display the photos, they have a wrong orientation when in slide show. Again, this is on two aTVs. Seriously, there have only been Apple devices and Apple services used - this is should not be happening.
I've have this problem in the past on both aTVs, but the pictures where taken with a Canon and uploaded to mobileme from an iMac. I figured it was a minor inconvenience and that Apple would resolve this in subsequent updates - this was over a year ago.
The only thing I've tried to do so far is to delete the user's MobileMe account and then re-added - nothing corrected.
Oh, and the software is up to date on both units.

Updating the information regarding photo orientation with AppleTV screen saver.
Clear instructions: Click on photo in iPhoto, then go to File, choose 'Reveal in Finder', select 'Original File'. A window opens up where the original photo file is held. Open the photo in Preview. Rotate photo as needed. Close and save. You are done. Restart your AppleTV and turn your photos on and off to share in iTunes. Ta Da, it all works and it's very easy.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • HT204291 When viewing a slideshow i can't get portrait pcs to appear vertical.

When viewing a slideshow on apple tv my portrait oriented pictures show up landscape on tv. This does not happen when viewing on ipad where they rotate to correct orientation. If mirroring pic one at a time they are also fine. Problem only happens when using slideshow. Does anyone know if i have missed a setting and how i can correct?

I have the same problem. Did you get an answer from anyone?

  • Photo orientation wrong when synched back to iPhone

    Hi,
I take photos on my iPhone, then I put them into a folder and I keep that folder synched to the iPhone. That folder contains other photos from my Nikon cameras too.
Mostly all the photos I take on the iPhone are in the portrait orientation (1200x1600).
Unfortunately the portrait iPhone photos show up rotated incorrectly when synched back to the iPhone. When I turn the iPhone, it rotates the photo but it is still wrong.
I tried putting these photos into iPhoto and synching to an album...they then show up with the right orientation. But, I don't use iPhoto, I use Bridge/Photoshop, so this isn't really a good work around.
Anyone have a simple way to fix this?
    Thanks!

There is definitely something wrong (and MikeIPS' explanation that "there is no bug or flaw here" doesn't hold water, there are flags for orientation and they are being mistranslated somewhere in the process)...
    1. With iPhone in vertical position I took a picture of a vertical letter size print and it appears vertical on iPhone when viewing.
    2. Imported this picture into iPhoto, it appears vertical. Quit iPhoto and opened in Preview it appears vertical.
    3. Deleted original from iPhone, dragged imported version from iPhoto folder into my "sync pictures" folder and exported back to iPhone, now it's rotated 90 on the iPhone.
    4. Since I never edited or saved photo in either iPhoto or Preview, then it seems likely that the orientation flag is being changed during sync either upon upload or download.
    5. Next in Preview I selected image in imported version and copied and pasted into new photo in Preview, uploaded newly created file to iPhone and it is still rotated.
    6. Throughout this process, when doing a "Get Info" in Preview, the Orientation flag(s) shows 6. If you "Save As" in Preview to PNG it completely strips orientation info and PNG file uploads with correct vertical orientation. If you "Save As" TIFF it changes the orientation flag to a 1 and it uploads with correct vertical orientation. I stopped at this point because I wasn't doing an exhaustive analysis and only wanted to fix orientation on this one photo.
I should note that the weird orientation has only happened a few times, which lends further credence to the theory that it is happening during transfer. I rarely move photos back and forth, so this isn't a huge issue to me. If I did use this feature extensively, I would use the Automator and create an action that took the batch and in Preview resaved them in a file format that was as nondestructive to the image as possible. Until Apple fixes this issue, at least with the information I have provided you, you have a way to resolve the issue without resorting to having to buy any third party apps.
p.s. If this ever happens to MikeIPS I would suggest he used the Automator as well, but since Vista doesn't have one, it wouldn't do him any good.

  • Photo quality worse when viewed on a PC -- why?

I'm experiencing a strange issue with some photos that I've touched up in iPhoto. When viewing the photos in iPhoto, they look fine. When exported into a different folder and viewed in Preview, they look fine. But later on I tried opening up the same exported files (jpeg's) on a PC, and some of them looked horrible. Some were horrendously noisy. Some had colors that seemed off. Some were far too sharp (I was playing around with the sharpness adjuster in iPhoto).
Has anyone experienced this issue before, and does anyone know why this happened? I plan on simply going back and toning down some of my edits/adjustments, but I'd like to know if there's an explanation for this.
One odd thing I noticed just now is that when opening some of these "bad" jpegs in Preview, for a split second, the photos look like they did on my PC. For example, I could see the pixel noise in one of them for a split second... similar to the way iPhoto first displays a blurry enlargement when double clicking on a photo. It almost seems like Preview and iPhoto are self-correcting bad images for display. Thoughts?

The primary cause of the misalignment is the fact the text is using a "Web Safe" font. A "web safe" font is not a single font. Rather it's a list/stack of fonts for the site visitor's browser to try until it finds one that's available the visitor's computer. That means on one computer the text is in one font (i.e. Arial) and on another computer it's another (i.e. Helvetica) with the subsequent fallout caused by the varying character widths between the two fonts. The best way to reduce this variation between site viewers is to use a Web Font (either an Edge Web Font or a Self-Hosted Web Font).
The alignment still won't be entirely consistent across browsers (or even versions of browsers), because each browser has it's own text layout engine and the engines do sometime change, but the variation will be radically reduced.

  • IDcs3 export PDF issues when viewing in Preview

I appear to be having issues when exporting PDFs from IDcs3. I have drop shadows on text and objects. When i export as a PDF and view it in 'Preview', I get a shadow that extends the area of the object. Drop shadows are not defined, they just have a block blur effect.
The thing is when I transfer the file over to my MS machine, Acrobat displays the PDF perfectly. Is this a problem with Preview or is it something to do with the export PDF settings.
    Cheers

Preview is not capable of handling the advance features of exported PDFs.

  • Small issue when viewing photos

Hi, I only got my Xperia Z2 today and I've noticed something going on when i view photos that wasn't happening earlier. When I take a photo with the camera in the camera app it's fine and looks good, but then when I go to view it by pressing the little thumbnail in the camera app the photo is always displayed in landscape and for some reason seems to dim and darken considerably after a second or two. This only happens when i view the photo in the camera app, if I exit the app and go to the photos app it works fine.  Anyone know why this happens and how to change it? Is it some sort of power saving thing because I'm at around 1/3 battery? Any help is appreciated

  • Why do the colours of the photos change when viewing a slideshow in Lightroom 5.2?

The images appear less saturated with a green-ish tint while viewing the images on a calibrated Macbook Pro Retina display 15".
    Any solutions are appreciated. Thanks.

I don't see the desaturation you describe on my own 15" retina but what you describe is definitely not strange and out of character for the Slideshow module. The slideshow module is quite bad to start with and has been such since the start of Lightroom. Pity as the rest of Lightroom is quite good.  It might work in a pinch but even the free iPhoto that is already on your Mac does a better job. It's not a bad idea to simply export some jpegs and show them in iPhoto. You get many more transitions and you can do the zooming and panning. I use Keynote myself for complete control and text overlays/effects. This now is also a free download from the app store with any recent Mac. Just avoid saving your files on the silly Apple cloud.

  • Photo orientation issues on ipod touch..

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.. when I was going through my pictures zooming in and out and rotating the frame something weird happened. I guess I rotated while I zoomed and the picture actually got stuck at like 45 degrees. After a second or two of trying to get it un-stuck at that strange angle, it went back to its proper 90 degree orientation but it was reversed. By that I mean the picture (portrait picture) was laying sideways while you held the ipod in portrait mode and when you held it in landscape mode the picture rotated to the same orientation of laying sideways (you know what I mean?) I tried taking the pictures off the ipod and reloading them, but that didn't work. Anyone else having this issue, and or how to fix it??

I'd like to help, but for the life of me, I can't make out what you're saying.
    Try again?

  • Portrait Photo Orientation Not Processed

I am using iDVD for the first time. When dragging portrait oriented (vs. landscape) from iPhoto they insert into the slideshow without problem. When I encode and attemp to burn or create disc image, those photographs are omitted; leaving a blank, black screen when played.
I have not found any documentation to help.
Photographs are originally from Nikon D50, JPEG format, and display properly in iPhoto 6.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Matt,
Have you looked at Preparing images for DVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/17.html

  • Pictures imported are blurry when viewing as slideshow

Hello everyone, I am new to this this business and am trying to create a picture slide show but am running into the problem of the picture which I have imported and added to the slide show being fuzzy when I view it on my laptop. Here are the specifics and what I have already tried. Thank you all in advance.
    1. Have Adobe premiere elements 3
    2. Pictures originally scanned in at 200 dpi, have also placed same picture at 400 and 800 dpi scan into slide show for comparison
    3. Picture in question is a 3x5 and I have not touched any settings and have left them at defaults
    4. Picture is in good condition and is in jpeg format
    neubs

    Thank you Paul, Steve.
Ok. I just checked my size in terms of pixels, at.....
    200 dpi= 680 x 1010
    300 dpi= 1020 x 1546
With that said, I am assuming that the higher the dpi count, the bigger the size (pixel wise). Could it be a issue of the picture being used "being too big" and PE is automatically converting it to what the preset optimum dimensions are? As a result, making the pictures blurry?
-In terms of resizing, how should I go about doing that? I have Photoshop Elements 5, would that be a good program to adjust the size to about 1000 x 750 pixels?
-When you say render and "hitting enter," when and where do I do that: when I am doing with the slideshow and I export, or how/when do I render and what is the procedure?
-The slideshow will be shown on a projector. What is the best method with the quality of the show in mind to show it....Direct link from laptop, AVI, DVD?
Again, a big thank you to everyone in advance.

  • Orientation issues when using Save As in Adobe Reader X

I am using Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) and any time I change the orientation of the PDF file, when I do FILE - SAVE AS - PDF and save the PDF under a different name, and then OPEN the newly created PDF, the orientation reverts back. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 10.1.2. Should I go back to 9?? It's Windows 7 64-bit and I am running this as ADMIN.

Reader cannot rotates pages in a document, but it can rotate the view. This is not something that can be saved. Adobe Acrobat can rotate pages and save the document, but not Reader.

  • Why is the photo quality poor when view on TV?

Before I burn a slideshow on a dvd I check to see the quality of my images and they look perfect on my mac however, the quality is greatly reduced when I watch a photo slideshow on a TV. This has occurred for one than 1 tv also (all pretty new).
Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
    Thanks.

Are you using high resolution images? If so, try lowering the resolution. Or try an app that specializes in iDvd slideshows.

  • High contrast when viewing a slideshow

When I look at a photo in full screen mode, it is fine, but as soon as I click on the slideshow, the contrast changes and the pictures all appear in very high contrast, and they look horrible. Does anyone have any idea why this is, and how to fix it? Does anyone else suffer from this problem? This is on a 24" iMac.

Start with this basic fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Photos are Corruped when viewing on iPad

Everytime I try to sync photos some photos are good... some photos are bad. they have horizontal bars through them. I have no idea what the issue is.
    Hardware software? desktop issue?
    Any thoughts?
Also, I have removed all the photos but it states that I have on photo on here through itunes.. man.. so frustrating.. any ideas?

so an update to this situation:
I took it back to the apple store and they exchanged it out for me, but after syncing my photos again its doing the exact same thing.
When i say corrupted what i mean is that there are horizontal bars going to the picture making it look "out of sync". Sometimes the full picture does even render. Funny thing is that on the thumbnails though it looks perfectly fine.
I was thinking it was the original file, but this "corruption" is random. I've synced the same folder multiple times and its corrupted outcome is usually different everytime. Ive tried other folders a number of times as well. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it doesnt. (thus i can deduce that its not a specific file thats making it go "corrupt")
I think it has to do with the optimization process, (maybe my computer is too slow?) but who knows.
I synced about 100 pics, and id say at least 15 of them are "corrupted"
Any ideas or suggestions? (i think its software based)
    Thanks!
