Portrait photos are black in iphoto

Hi all,
I've been looking on the forums and it seems like this is a fairly common problem, however I think mine might be slightly different. I have a Mac Book Air (10.8.2) and I'm using iPhoto (9.4.2). I've been downloading photos off my canon DSLR for ages and about a week ago I did a download and it was a bit of a problem. My computer kept saying it had run out of space on the hard drive and for a while I had been slowly moving stuff across to an external hardrive. Eventually there was enough room to download my photos so I did, and deleted the downloaded ones off my camera at the prompt like normal. As I was travelling I didn't have enough time to check them carefully and my computer was a bit slow, so I thought the rest would probably load later and didn't worry to much.
What I have found now is that all the other photos loaded fine and only the portraits remain affected. I tried the rotate and return to original as suggested and it worked only on one of the photos but not on the others. When I looked at the original photos in Finder they are the right size for a photo but are also black. When I tried to open with photoshop I get the message: Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.
I just tried downloading my final holiday photos and they worked fine (both landscape and portrait), so it is really only one batch which is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

It sounds like while trying to import the photos with insufficient disk space those image files were damaged and not copied fully.  Now that you have sufficient space (a minimum of 10 GB is recommended) the latest imports are good.
What do you get if you export one of the problem photos out of iPhoto as Kind=Original and try to open it with Preview.  If it appears the same then there's nothing you can to do recover them.

  • All my photos are Black Exclamation Marks - iphoto on ExtHD

My iphoto library is stored on an ext HD. i had a power outage now when i reopen iphoto all photos are black exclamation marks. how can i restore or fix this? i tried rebuild function but it didnt work. thanks

Since the rebuild fix didn't solve the problem give this a go:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Note:  if the latest version, V4, of iPhoto Library Manager doesn't run download the earlier version, V3.  It's available at the same website.

  • How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.  I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one.  They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device."  I hadn't touched the camera.  The message came by itself.  I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit.  Opening it back up, the pictures were gone.  Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

My photos are OK in the Organizer, but the portrait photos are cut off at the top or bottom when used in a slide show.  I have checked the "Crop to Fit" portrait selection but it makes no difference.  I have Version 9 of Elements.

    Hi,
I suggest that you try unchecking both of the crop options - landscape & portrait.
To re-create your situation, I had to check the crop for landscape pictures option.
I prefer to have control over any cropping so I tend to crop each image first before creating the slide show.

  • All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

Do you have a Time Machine backup or any backup of your Mac? Then you could try to restore from the backup.
If your photos are very important documents, you could also try data recovery software. Usually the trial versions are free, but if you want to safe the recovery photos you have to pay.  Disk Drill works well to recover jPEG photos, see:  http://www.cleverfiles.com/
It is still not obvious what might have happened to your iPhoto Library.  Have you searched for different iPhoto Libraries?
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • In my iPhoto library some photoes are black

Some photoes at random are black, though I can find them being okey in finder ( strangely, there is changed file which is black as well so there are 2 types of one photo). Please help, don't know what to do!

I did post to the iPhoto forum and am hoping for an answer soon. I don't want to continue rebuilding my iphoto library if I can do it using originals. My library has 45,000 pictures...a huge job!

  • Some .Photos are black in slideshow

I have made a slideshow out of some travel photos.
However, when I play the slideshow some of the photos appear black. They are in the group on the top. When I click on the photo for a preview it appears black. In the library they are fine. Only the title of the photo appears. Out of 23 photos in the show 6 appear black.
I hope there is an easy way to correct this. I am brand new to the IMAC G5.
    Thanks for any help.

I used a workaround to make them appear again, something I discovered by accident - viewing the actual image file in the Finder (column view, where the last panel is a preview) seems to remind iPhoto where the file is, and it loads fine. The problem is, "Show File" doesn't work and you have to navigate down the folder to the year and roll manually.
Anyone else noticed that this seems to be happening only to files that show thumbnails on the icons? Even though I have Finder's icon preview turned off (other files use the normal Preview icon), the affected files have thumbnails on their icons. Next time I'll try turning that feature off in Photoshop.

  • Photos went BLACK, HELP, iPhoto 5.0.4

Without any known error on my part (?) the window showing the photos went BLACK with the image names and photo outline still showing... when selecting a photo for viewing it also comes up BLACK... when I look at the images "get Info" option it shows all the correct data but I can't see the the photo... All Folders are affected. Thanks for any suggestion you may pass....

    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    2. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Seven of my albums from iPhoto 9.5.1 are no longer visible. The photos are still in iPhoto - is there a way to get the metadata back?

Seven of my albums from iPhoto 9.5.1 are no longer visible. The photos are still visible in iPhoto, but the albums are completely gone (another 10  albums are still visible). The missing albums are visible in iPhoto Library Manager (I downloaded the free version and when it loaded the library the missing albums were visible)
About 6 months ago 4 different albums disappeared and I assumed my kids had accidentally deleted them; however, they haven't been allowed to touch the computer since then, so I can't blame them this time! Last time I lost albums I spent hours re-creating them but I am hoping that there is an easier way of getting the metadata to function again - I know I could create a new library with iphoto Library Manager but I would have to buy the full version and can't afford to do that.
Not sure if it has anything to do with updating the application? (I updated recently and I'm not sure exactly when the albums disappeared.

Use the rebuild function in iPhoto Library Manager. That does not require a purchase. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • All my photos are missing in iphoto 4.0.3.

All the photos are missing in my iphoto 4.0.3. The files are on the side under source but the screen also stays blank in every file. What to do?

I had a similar situation with some of my photos, not all of them. During help from a genius at Apple an error occurred and we feared I might have lost my photos. When the problem was "fixed", the photos showed up as being taken the same day and no longer in the original order. In addition numerous photos were gone.
I'm told the photos still exist on the HDD but just can't be found by iPhoto. If this is the case how do I find them? Would I be able to do a search for all jpg files to do this?
On a side note: I've backed up my HDD to an external drive and I'm about to erase my HDD and update Panther to Tiger. When I move the user files back to the HDD I plan on consolidating them into one user.
    Any insight is most appreciated.

  • Photos are black or grey in Photoshop Lightroom

When you view your photos in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on Windows, only a black or grey rectangle is displayed; you cannot see your photos.
    The linked
    Adobe Technote provides more information

This could mean any of the following:
You moved, renamed or deleted the photos (or the folders that contain them) outside of Lightroom (hint: if this is what you did, don't do that any more)
If the photos are on an external drive, the drive may be asleep or turned off
If you use Windows, it could mean that the external drive has been assigned a different drive letter
The fix is described here: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
If the problem is a different drive letter in Windows, you could simply change the drive letter back to what it was yesterday

  • I tried to import 2 photos from an email. The photos are now on iPhoto, however, when I try to close iPhoto or turn off my computer, I get a notice that says, "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for the import to complete."

I tried to import 2 photos from an email to iphoto. The photos now appear in iphoto as the latest imports, However, when I try to close iphoto or log off of my computer, I get a message box that says, " Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for the import to complete."
I can't get out of iphoto or log off of my computer, or turn the computer off. How do I stop the import or log out of iphoto???

Try Force-quit from the Apple-menu to close iPhoto.

I have an iPad 3 and I can not view my photos. I can view them through the photo stream on my phone but on my iPad they come up black. I'm not sure what to do.

Anybody have any idea what's going on? Is gif supported? Should I be able to view gif photos? If I can't what might be going wrong, and what can I do to fix it?

  • When I start iphoto08 all the photos are black.I only can see the comment to the Picture.

When I start iphoto08 I only see black events and no pictures.I can see my comments.Who can help

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
