Ports 139 and 445 dangerous on Mac OS X?

I have a Mac OS X iBook that is sharing files with Windows XP PC using SMB.
When I start up my Mac the Norton Firewall ask me whether or not I want ports 139 and 445 to connect.
I know that port 139 should not be open for a Windows computer because of the NetBIOS component.
Are ports 139 and 445 dangerous for a Mac?

You may want to create an item in /Library/StartupItems.

I have not tried this as yet.

  • Ports 139 and 445 open

Did a scan of my router and ports 139 and 445 are open. I obviously don't want them to be but how do I close them?

I didn't think you were doing an internal scan. Port need to be opened on the inside of your network to allow the routers many services.
For security you should run the scan jlbjlb recommended.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • How to open ports 119 and 443 in my Mac?

I've been trying to use the UseNeXT software with my Mac with no success. I called their support and they told me I need to open the ports 119 and 443. I contact Apple support and they told me that is beyond their scope (???).
Can somebody help me with that? I tried to find it online, but all tutorials that i tried didn't work or are outdated.
    Thanks

    Hi Drew,
It probably depends on the router as to the method used to open the ports.
As I have said elsewhere in the thread the first 1024 ports are open in most router to allow things to work Out of the Box such as Mail (110, 25, 567, 569, 995, 996 and many more ) and web Browsing (port 80 mostly but secure site can use 443) FTP (21 and 22) to name some.
Port Forwarding is one way to open some of the ports for One IP (computer).
Most routers have  table for doing this and this can be limited as to the number of ports included.
This Linksys pic shows how to do it for some as it allows groups based on Start and end ports. However it restricts it to one IP
DMZ is a form of Extreme Port Forwarding that opens all 65535 ports to one IP (Computer)
In both the above cases other computers (IP addresses) are excluded from using the ports.
Port Triggering doe allow multiple computers to access the same Port but requires that you know the lead  - Trigger - port involved for each app.
It is limited by the table size for your particular router.
Same Router in Trigger ports for iChat 3
Most router come with UPnP nowadays.
It is an ON/Off setting that allows the apps on the computer to say which ports are needed and when.
On some you can reduce the time to live  and the Hop amounts.
The ports stay open from a period of normally 30 mins after non use.
    This can be changed.
It also tends to list the number of Hops (the number of devices beyond the UPnP device) that it can be heard.
    My Sky Hub
I have no other router on my network but I do sometimes use Internet Sharing between two computers hence the 2 Hops.
Every other device is only one Hop away from the the router.
There are concerns that the "Advertisement" is seen upstream (internet side) as well as device downstream.
The Concern is that this could be Up to your ISP and then down to the "next" IP end user on the particular router/server at the ISP end.
I have seen no evidence of this being the case.
    Hope this helps.

  • Air Port Xpress and iTunes 7.1 Mac problem

Hi, I have updated to iTunes 7.1 and updated airport (I have both an extreme for internet and an express just for music) since those last 2 updates I cant see my remote speakers in itunes....
Someone has an hint on that ?
    Thx.

Running iTunes v 7.1.0.59 and Bonjour v 1.0.3 in Win XP with Airport Express on Linksys wireless network
After losing AirTunes, I uninstalled Bonjour. I regained functionality of AirTunes, but was unable to print to my printer connected to the Express. Reinstalling Bonjour gave me back my printer AND AirTunes, until I restarted iTunes, then I was back to the beginning.
Implications of stopping the Bonjour service:
    - iTunes 7.1.0.59 can now find my speakers
    - I am unable to print to my printer that was attached to the Airport Express via Bonjour.
Looks like iTunes breaks a perfectly good device.

  • How to close ports 139, 8290, and 10002

Is there anyway to close ports 139, 8290 and 10002 off a networked  HP 2820? I work at a university and my department has been asked to closethese ports.  is there any way to close these ports and still continue to print on both Mac and Windows platforms?
    thanks for any advice.

Well, in the router set up we can only open the port for any specific application. But there is no way in the router management page where we can close any specific ports for specific purpose.

As long as it meets the minimum technical specifications, although the more above the minimum you have, the better the experience.

  • Odd Port 139 Behavior

    Hi everyone,
I've been running in to some trouble with my university's IT department. They say that my Mac Mini (1.66GHz CoreDuo) has times when it's trying to connect to something via port 139 (netbios-ssn). They claim that it averages over 1 attempt per second. However, in all of my snooping, using Activity Monitor, Network Utility, and Little Snitch, I've never noticed anything odd. I do admit that I might not be observing it at the correct times, but I would like to get to the bottom of this. Currently my IT department has my computer "quarantined" and won't authorize it to access the network again until I can sort this out.
Have any of you heard of something like this before (the 139 connection attempts)?
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave DeLong

At least for me, anytime I use a file dialog I get a message from little snitch telling me that it's trying to connect to port 139 - so any time I try to open or save a document, etc. Little Snitch tells me that the program I'm using is trying to connect via port 139.
Same for when I try to choose a network printer.
The snitch tells me about connect attempts over port 139 quite often, but not once per second.
Finder is doubtless doing its own queries to "discover" what's out there on the network.
I have a hard time believing it's even an issue, as every Mac, Linux, and Unix box that tries to connect to the windows shares on the network are going to have similar behavior. The Engineering department alone would be *+up in arms+* over such a policy. **** hath no fury like a few dozen EE students whose computers are banned.
First because it's asinine - a connection attempt over port 139 is fairly innocent; you have to discover what's on the CIFS/SMB (ie. Windows shares) network somehow. Pretty much every non-Microsoft device (including Macs) that can access Windows shares uses "samba", which can be set to periodically ping the network to discover shares on the network. The whole point is so things "plug and play" without the IT manager having to do anything.
SMB/CIFS is a very chatty protocol to begin with...

  • E4200 How to close port 139 ?

So finally that my e4200 is capable of disabling wps i run in to another question.
    how to close ports 139 445 ?
these are open by default and i didnt figure out how to close them, in browser setup..
and YES port 139 IS a security issue. people denying this, are the same, that denied any vulnearibilties to wps.

  • Allow smbd connecting from x.x.x.x:51273 to port 139 proto=6

Anybody know why this is showing up every few minutes in my Console? Those IPs are a mini in the family room (107) and a Mac Pro in the basement (2). This output is showing up on my Mac Pro in the office. I do have file sharing turned on, but not SMB file sharing. It's pretty wasteful to fill up my console log with this crap.

I'd like to know this too. I have found similar entries in my firewall log. Probably something trivial and unimportant but I'd like to know for reassurance.

    Hi Auracles1,
Here's a pretty discussion regarding wireless printing with this device and a Mac.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-networking-and-wireless/HP-Officejet-6500-E 709n-wireless-issue/m-p/258853
I have a similar OfficeJet and it was a multi-step process. (1) Install printer drivers on the machine, (2) Add the printer queue in print & fax, (3) Run the "setup wizard" from the disc for wireless printing.

    If the reset doesn't work:
    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.

  • My MBP is port scanning, and I dont know why!

Ever since this Tuesday at the office (we're all running macs) the internet keeps going down.
I called the ISP, they told me that one of the machines looks like it has a virus running, one of them is port scanning- and that overflowed the router and froze it.
Turns out its my personal MacBook Pro that matches the IP address he gave me. I was FTP'd into a server and downloading a website for backup.
He said something like ports 4400- 58,000 were being scanned sequentially and that it seemed like there was a virus on the computer, I was shocked- and told him that we were all on macs. Perhaps the FTP client (called "fetch") failed to connect to one port and tried another and another ect. But, the tech guy also said that it wasn't on FTP protocol.
Today I've been working on securing my machine. I stopped using the Wi-fi, turned on my firewall ( I know, bad idea to not have it on ) and installed ClamXav and Little Snitch.
Perhaps I have some kind of malware? Is it too late?
    Help!

Isp's always blame things on the mac when they don't know why something is happening to their network.
You could launch Activity monitor and look at all the processes that are running. Sort it my cpu cycles. There could be an application stuck in update mode or one trying to phone home..like adobe updater.

  • Why can't I connect Mail on ports 25 and 110?

Loaded the security update the other day, and two days later I can't download or receive email (access to the Internet is fine through our router). But it didn't happen immediately, and the ability to send mail disappeared after the receiving of email stopped.
The messages are "The server "smtp.surfcity.net" cannot be contacted on port 25" and "The server "pop3.surcity.net" cannot be contacted on port 110."
Connection Doctor says I'm connecting to the Internet, but the "Assist Me" button is inactive (greyed out) and both red lights are on.
I have not changed any info in my account, which seems fine. What I have tried (unsuccessful results) is to unplug the router and connect directly to the DLS modem, thus eliminating the old router as the problem; turned off both the router and Mac firewalls; called my ISP tech support (not a Mac-friendly guy); tried to create a new (duplicate) account (but the pop3 server couldn't be accessed, so I didn't get far); repaired permissions; defragged the hard drive of my brand-new Mini.
The email is totally accessible on the Internet, but I can't get Mail and the ISP's system to communicate.
I'm an intermediate operator in most cases, but routers and servers are an area I'm not familiar with. Any strategies?

Thanks for all your help -- I already had tried what David suggested, and the telnet trick is a good one I'll remember.
The dufus tech support guy was too lazy to check his own servers, which needed resetting. I arrived at this conclusion on Saturday night after eliminating the router and both computers as culprits, and the ISP -- Surfcity is normally outstanding, so this laziness was a true surprise -- confirmed it on Monday, when my email began working again.
Sorry to have bothered you guys for naught -- but I learned something, which was good. Thanks again.

  • Air port express not found by my mac

Hallo all, I want to extend my wlan, therefore I want to install an additional air port. I have already a time capuse with air port. Now my question:
Do I neet to connect the new air port with a wire? I thougt the connection is wireless? Unitl now the new air port is not found by my mac within the utility air port program. Why? Please help! Thank you, Kailash

To help facilitate setting up your extended network, I would recommend the following:
Perforrm a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express base station.
Temporarily connect the Express to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable between them.
Once you have configured the extended network, you can now disconnect the Express from the TC and place it at the desired location.
