Ports at back of iMac are driving me crazy!

I'm using GarageBand with a guitar and bass, often monitoring the output with headphones.
Plugging the instruments and headphones in the back of the iMac is major hassle. I often spin the thing around 180 degrees just to get set up.
And then the cables! Yikes! Headphones, guitar cable, mouse cable...
Is there some inexpensive solution so I can plug into <something> which is always plugged into <some port>?
Perhaps some phyical USB interface?
Suggestions, please!

  • USB port at back of iMac stopped working except keyboard. Why?

My USB ports on back of iMac stopped working, I can't seem to get any power from them. Only keyboard port works..
My externals don't work neither and I got all my hard work on them. I think I've lost info?

I have no idea what happened. However, I believe that you've got to take it back to the service provider and work with them. Call them and tell them what happened and see what kind of a response you get. You might want to try to get in touch with Apple Customer Service and see if they can help you out with the service provider.
As for "compensation", that is probably a legal matter unless you have some kind of insurance that covers you for business losses. You might try to stress to the service provider that they should do whatever service is now needed to get the machine working again at no additional charge.

  • "Optical audio port" on back of imac?

it sure doesn't look like an optical audio port... most optical audio ports are square and have a tiny door on them.
I know the manual said something about getting a "mini-plug adapter" to use the port incase I want to output my itunes into my audio receiver but is the port on the back of the imac something that takes a "mini-stereo plug" like headphones or is it something that takes a "mini-Toslink" plug like a few I've seen advertised on ebay?
well I guess the bottom line is that its probably a "mini-stereo plug" because my Boston computer speakers plugged right into it....

Hey there - use the mini-Toslink plug (I chose a 90 degree adapter version) and then ran it to my stereo receiver. Voila! Optical out. The only thing I'm still working on is getting some type of software switch installed (if at all possible) to swap between digital audio out and using the built in speakers (My stereo receiver isn't always on and I don't like unplugging the cable just to get the speakers to work.) To answer your original question, yes, the mini Toslink cable will work just fine.

  • My USB ports only work if i unplug them, swap them around and plug them back in. Its driving me crazy! I have done a pram and smc  reset, reinstalled lion and spent two hours on the phone to apple. Now what?!!

I have a optical lead coming out of the headphone jack in to a dac that goes in to my amp (which has speakers connected) so i can listen to music. The Dac is powered by usb. Recently the sound stopped working. I called tech support and they suggested the resets (pram and smc) and i reinstalled lion and reinstalled itunes, deleted audio files, blah blah blah.
So now when the computer turns off, or indeed randomly sometimes, I have to uplug the usb cable and put it in a different port, it then works. If I then put it back in to the original port it still works. Totally baffled. Can anyone please help. i have 3 children who are getting very bored at the sight of my growling perplexed face and the sight of my back!

I don't know why that happens, since I don't own products of this type...  However, if the sole purpose of the USB connection is to provide power (not a data connection), can you connect it to something that just provides power, such as a USB power adapter (like the one that comes with iPhone)?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD810LL/A/apple-5w-usb-power-adaptor
Or, if it needs to be connected to a USB port, it might work properly if you get a self-powered USB hub and connect the USB cable to the DAC to the hub.  The hub would act like a "buffer" between the DAC and iMac.  It needs to be "self-powered" (comes with its own power supply). Here's one such USB hub
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/USB2HB7PRO/
Do you have anything else connected to USB (other than standard keyboard and mouse)?  If so, have you tried it with ONLY the DAC connected, to see if the problem recurs?  USB devices can interfere with each other.

  • Wifi / Video chat problems that are driving me crazy

    Hello all!
So here's the story. I bought a Macbook Pro about 4 weeks ago, and from the first day i've turned it on, I've been experiencing a few problems regarding my Macbook's wifi and ability to video chat. Ill address each problem separately
    Wifi:
So starting from the first boot up, it seems as if my Macbook Pro doesn't always play well with my network over wifi. After establishing a good connection for at least an hour, web pages will refuse to load, even though airport says I'm connected to the internet and to my network. When i turn airport off and back on, I'm prompted for my network password. When I enter it, it attempts to connect, and i get the message "network timeout". I keep getting this no matter how many times i attempt to reconnect, or restart. I have 2 windows computers (vista and xp) and 2 xboxes that are connected via LAN, and 2 ipod touches, an ipad, an old dell laptop (ubuntu), and a Macbook (snow leopard) that are connected at various times wirelessly. The problem persists no matter what time it is, what day it is, where i am in the house, or what is connected to the network. Some days it will happen 5 times, some days (like today), it has yet to happen, so it's very unpredictable. No other computers, including the Macbook, have this problem. I have yet to test this Macbook Pro on another network. I have searched various forums and tried multiple "network timeout" fixes, only to find myself being disconnected again. The problem does not happen when connected via LAN
    Video Chat:
This problem has also happened previously when i attempted to video chat on the previously mentioned Macbook. No matter what client i use to video chat (Ichat, oovoo, etc.), and no matter how I'm connected (WiFi, LAN), the video quality is very bad, and after a few minutes i lose connection (however, i retain a good internet connection). At best it is choppy, and i can barely understand the other person before i get disconnected. I've tried talking to people of various distances, from people in the same city, to my friend in florida, and i keep getting the same problem. My friends say that they're fine when they talk to other people and the quality is very good in comparison to mine, so I'm lost here. The video chat tests, appleu3test01 and 02 are crystal clear for me, while i don't get a response from 03. I figured it was because i was on wifi, since i have problems over wifi (above), but the problem persists even when connected via LAN. My internet sharing is OFF, as well as any other sharing option. I've gotten mediocre results at best doing VoIP tests, however i get stellar results from speed tests. Wired i get 20mb/s down, 5mb/s up, while wireless i get 5mb/s down, 2.5mb/s up, with a ping of 17ms.
Im curious to know if these two problems are related! My blame right now falls on the router or it's settings, but as of right now i really don't know how to go about fixing this.
My ISP is Verizon FiOS, and i must say I've seen a great improvement from when i switched from my local ISP (Time Warner Cable), however through my searching i have seen people run into problems with the macbook pro and Verizon FiOS and their routers. The problem is, I can't simply replace the router, It's used for the TV and DVR streaming and stuff, it had a COAX cable in it.
If it makes a difference, i needed LAN ports in my room, so i took my old Linksys WRT54G router with DD-WRT Firmware, and connected that to the wire that runs from the Actiontec M1424WR into my room, so i can connect my Xbox and my computer via LAN... that could be a possible interference.
I am a college bound 18 year old living with my parents at the moment, so extreme fixes (like switching ISP's) are out of the question for me, but i do have free reign over the router settings and such, so i can try most reasonable things. I LOVE my macbook pro, and don't see myself going back to windows anytime soon, so i want to fix these problems ASAP. I consider myself to have a good knowledge of computers, so lay every possible solution on me!
    Thanks in advance!

ok so all day yesterday i didn't have the wi-fi problem, but today I'm struggling to keep a connection. The status bar reads "Contacting website.com", and stays that way until i stop it, or it gets reconnected. I changed the settings mentioned above, but no dice. My router is up to date and everything too.
As for the Video Chatting problem, i didn't know that there was a connection doctor, so i tried that, and i get an amber light for "router type", and it says "port restricted". I searched around for a bit, and found somebody who said disabling the firewall on the router helps. I did that, and while i DID notice a significant improvement in video quality and connection quality, i still get an amber light with the message "router type: port restricted. This computers network setup includes one or more devices that are not fully compatible with audio and video chatting.". I still would like to get a green light here, as well as keep my firewall... any suggestions?

  • HP/Synaptics trackpad with integrated buttons in touch area- DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

My new HP Envy has integrated buttons on the trackpad, and NO MATTER WHAT the trackpad is UNBEARABLE to use as it always detects movement when you have your finger resting on the left button. I DO NOT WANT THIS
The driver has settings that should fix this as you can draw the 'touch/tap' area that should only be detected with movement. BUT THIS DOES NOT WORK. It makes it better, but still gets activated constantly as when you have both hands using the touch pad (finger resting on left click button, and another finger tracking/touching) it has a clunky driver that thinks 'one finger is in the touch area' so allows movement in button area.
The driver needs fixing, whoever programmed it should be shot. I dont know anyone who would want the whol trackpad area including the buttons to detect movement.
PLEASE ISSUE A FIX HP. I am considering taking back my new laptop over this one annoyance. Laptop looks great, but Its reasons like this that people buy Apple products, as they test and reasearch their design so much better.

I am having same issue and it gets accivated again

  • Ghost icons of imported videos are driving me crazy

    Hi all,
I searched and searched but I don't think anyone has my problem.  I imported a bunch of videos from a trip via the Apple Camera Adapter, and the videos were on my iPad and consuming about 20GB.  I tried to clean them, but they don't exactly go away.  They become these ghost icons on my iPad and viewed from iPhoto.  Deleting videos were often crashing iPhoto and the deleted ones were coming back to life, but after many tries I think they are just now ghost icons and are staying dead.
I just want to know how to eliminate them for good.  I am running iOS 7.1.
Here are the screen shots I took.  First I deleted a bunch, notice that iPhoto actually skips files when I tried to delete
Then some of the videos actually came back!  Crazy huh?  (Both screen shots were at the top of scrolling)
I finally got them all.  Now they won't go away.
When I tried to tap one of them, it will give me the following error message.
View from my iPhoto.  Different but equally annoying icons.

  • IMac is driving me CRAZY!

Hi all. So, my iMac was having problems with RAM. That got fixed with a new stick from apple. After that still had problems, after repairing the disk it worked.
NOW, i'm having problems doing anything. iTunes didn't have it's "metallic skin" but worked. somebody suggested reinstalling. i downloaded it off of apple after deleting itunes and it keeps saying "can't install because there is nothing there to install". And when I downlaod it, the download box does not appear and it is instantly on my desktop.
-EDIT- I just figured out how to fix this problem (delte the receipts), but that STILL didn't fix the problem. after reinstalling, iTunes is still an ugly mess. But i figured it was worth noting that even after reinstalling the program, i'm having problems. -End EDIT-
iPhoto can no longer import photos in from a camera, CDR, or anything! And i've been on these independent boards but have had no luck. And i know about iphoto and tampering in the finder folder, i know i didn't do it.
I've gotten to the point where I think a complete reinstall would be the best thing. My question is, would you all recommend or send it to apple? also does the OSX install discs come with iLife on it? cuz i don't want to lose those programs.
I love this computer but all it's given me is headaches for the past 3 weeks. And i'm not exactly in any position to get to an apple store myself.
Please help me. This computer is not even a month old. UGH!

John: I won't even try to guess what's going awry with your new iMac. But have you run your hardware test? Repaired permissions? You also might try turning it off and unplugging it for about one minute, then turn it back on.
Since it appears that your iMac is fairly new, you still have free telephone tech support. I'd write down the most troublesome problems and call apple tech support. Heck, you've paid for it in the purchase price of the computer. I also hear Disk Warrior is excellant at sniffing out problems and fixing them. Might be worth the $80.00 Good luck.

  • Nikon RAW conversions are driving me crazy.

Ever since upgrading to 10.4.8 and Aperture 1.5 all of my RAW files are displaying in a very unpleasent manner. Depending on the camera the effect is different but still way off from my previous tests in June. I do realize that Aperture ignores all of the in camera settings when processing the RAW files but the difference between in camera produced jpgs and RAWs are now crazy. The worst being from my D2Hs. Those RAWs actually look like an Adobe 1998 color space image being displayed in an sRGB context. This is now a big problem.
Apple has been working on it for over a week, does anyone out there have work arounds, presets, whatever that will give me decent default results for Nikon D2H, D2X, and D200 RAW files. D2H being the worst off right now.
    Thanks
    RB

Thinking more about the issue you are experiencing, I
am curious to know how your D2X (or D2H) is
configured, relative to the following settings:
    * Color Space (sRGB or Adobe RGB); defaults to sRGB.
[The D2H may not have a separate setting for
this; instead it may be combined with the Color
    Mode.]
Color Mode (Type I, II or III); defaults to Type I.
Tone Compensation (Auto, Normal or predefined
    curve); defaults to Auto.
    I ask because a photo's resultant colors -- and
perhaps the perceived white balance -- can be
    considerably different depending on the
aforementioned settings. And the defaults are
definitely NOT what I would use, particularly for
    RAW.
In any case, after reading (and re-reading) the D2X
manual, perusing web sites, etc., etc., I have found
the following settings to be optimal for a RAW
    workflow:
    * Color Space: Adobe RGB. (The default -- sRGB --
has a smaller gamut than Adobe RGB.)
    * Color Mode: II. (The default -- type I -- is for
portrait shots. Type III is for landscapes. Type II
-- only available when utilizing Adobe RGB for the
colorspace -- is suited for a RAW workflow. Type I
and III both affect color saturation and/or tone,
while type II does not, AFAIK.)
    * Tone Compensation: Normal. (The default -- "Auto"
-- allows the camera to make changes to the tones in
an image, and said changes can be different from
    shot-to-shot...even for the same scene.)
Bottom line, Nikon's defaults -- color space sRGB,
color mode I and auto tone compensation -- can have a
significant impact on color saturation, tone/hue,
etc. And, while I would certainly like to hear
others' opinions, I definitely do not recommend
    Nikon's defaults.
As for Aperture, it does properly recognize the white
balance setting for a given image. However, I do not
believe that Aperture compensates for -- or even
recognizes -- the "Color Mode" and "Tone
Compensation" settings. This would also explain why
folks sometimes see different results in Aperture vs.
Nikon's Capture NX, for a given image.
    Anyone else?
    MacBook Pro
    17" 2.16; PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7   Mac OS X
    (10.4.8)   Camera: Nikon D2X
I think that I mentioned this before but here goes again:
D2H Color mode 1, Normal contrast, sRGB, preset WB with 5500K lights.
The corrections to get the RAW to where it should be based on known shooting conditions, comparison to the in camera JPG, and comparison to the way Nikon capture processes the RAW file are massive. Not just a little. It litterally is like taking an Adobe RGB color space image, removing the profile info, sticking an sRGB profile tag on it, opening it in PS and then making the corrections to how it should look with known reference points of lighting temp, camera WB, etc.

  • I don't have a 'search' field at all anymore in iTunes 11.  As in, the box does not exist!!  Can anyone tell me how I can get it back?  It's driving me CRAZY!

Help, help, help!!  My 'search' field in iTunes 11 seems to have completely disappeared and I don't know how to get it back.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    You don't see it here?
This is iTunes 11 on 10.6.8 - I tried to make it disappear but couldn't do so, so if you've lost it I can't give you an easy answer. Have you tried rebooting your Mac? If that doesn't help you could try reinstalling iTunes:

I'm using Safari. I close the Safari window and click on the desktop to get the Finder - I'm still in Safari.
I try to access the Finder by clicking on the Finder icon in the dock - no good, still in Safari.
I use Command-Tab to select the Finder - no good, still in Safari.
This happens often with Preview and Mail as well. After rummaging around awhile I can get back to the Finder, but this is a very big annoyance. And it seems to be getting worse.
Is this a known problem / bug in Leopard? Anyone else experiencing it? Any fix?

    Donnie,
Did you attempt to reboot your Mini?
    Did you repair permissions?
Did you try those applications in another account?
Did you try to refresh the finder plist file? If not, you may want to refresh the Finder plist file by dragging the com.apple.finder.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Preferences folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and reset your settings in Finder>Preferences...>General.

  • IPad and MobileMe are driving me crazy! Help!

    Hi there,
I recently bought an iPad and with it, a mobileme subscription. As a former user of the service, I really enjoyed the syncing over the air to my iPhone. Apparently, despite having set it up properly, no one seems willing to tell my iPad that I have mobile me and it should sync.
    Here's the real problem:
I set up mobileme syncing on the iphone and ipad and my macbook pro. I made some changes to my ical on my mac. my iphone synced but my ipad didn't, despite making sure that mobile.com/calendar was updated AND I forced a sync. Any ideas?

Open iCal and look at the upper left corner. If you don't see a calendar identification, go to the View menu and select "Show Calendar List."
There may be other configurations that work but the one that seems to be the best is to use MobileMe as the master. When I fire up my Mac, iCal is blank for a split-second until it gets the info from MobileMe. Similarly, my iPad is configured to always get the info from MobileMe.
Since I don't have an iPhone, I can't explain why your iPhone tracks the Mac.

Yet the sound effects for opening new web pages, clicking on the menu bar, etc keep happening.
They are driving me crazy. How do I make them stop?
    - Terribly Vexed.

There may be two things to try. 1: update Mac OS X to v. 10.5.4. this may help. The second option is to simply mute the volume. Hope it works!
