Ports probe shows "Closed"  not "stealth"

Hello. I just installed an Airport Extreme Wireless and when I go to GRC Reports and scan my ports...most are reported as "closed". How do I program the router to hide or "stealth" my ports? All previous routers I've used made my ports "stealth"...I bought the Airport router for the USB hard disk option...but don't want my computer or router responding to pings n probes!

I have the same problem, all ports closed with the exclusion of port 53 open.
You can try port forwarding to stealth your Airport.
Go to GRC MP3 Open Ports for more info: http://media.grc.com/sn/SN-043-lq.mp3 and also NAT Traversal: http://media.grc.com/sn/SN-042-lq.mp3

Hope Apple will fix this problem soon!

  • Ports Showing as closed not stealth

I recently got the Airport Extreme N Router. On my old router, if I went to www.grc.com and ran the "shields up" test. All my ports would show up as "stealth" and I would pass the security test. With my new airport router, I run the test and it fails because they ports show up as closed, not stealth.
My friend also has the Airport Extreme N router. When he runs the test, he gets stealth. I have been through all the settings and can not figure out how to accomplish this added level of security. I also don't know what I have done wrong to make my ports appear this way.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

  • Help! 5 closed ports while the rest are stealthed.

My ISP recently blocked access to specific torrent sites on foot of a court ruling that it must do so.
Up until they did this, ALL of my ports were "stealthed" by my NAT (hardware) firewall (in my ISP's router).
Now, 5 of my ports report as "closed" instead of "stealthed". I would like to have them report as "stealthed" again.
I have no idea how to do this, so would appreciate advice on the issue.
My router/firewall are made by Netgear for my ISP.
Additionally, when I regularly check the security status of my network on the excellent "Shields Up!", I sometimes find that port 443 (HTTPS) is showing as "open" when I check it. This can be resolved by resetting my Windows Firewall
to its default settings, which returns it to stealth mode.
I have no idea why port 443 is opening or which program may be opening it. Obviously, I am concerned about this.
    I hope someone can help!

You would create several pseudo classes on your footer links. First, make sure your footer has an id (or is the actual footer html5 element)...
    <div id="footer">your links</div>
    or
    <footer>your links</footer>
Then in your css, specify that element's link pseudo classes in this order...
    #footer a:link {color:white;}
#footer a:visited {color:white;} /*this needs to be set to avoid the default purple on visited links*/
    #footer a:hover {color:orange;}
    #footer a:active {color:green;} /*this is the color it changes to while clicking*/
    or
    footer a:link {color:white;}
    footer a:visited {color:white;}
    footer a:hover {color:orange;}
    footer a:active {color:green;}

  • Movies playing in iTunes will not show closed captions

I have purchased several movies from the iTunes store. They all have Closed Captioning listed in the store description. I need Closed Captioning because I have hearing loss and even with my hearing aids, I cannot hear all the dialogue in movies.
In my iTunes app, I opened Preferences-->Playback and checked the box for "Show closed captioning when available." Then I play the movie in iTunes. No captions. I click on the Controls menu for Audio & Subtitles. It's grayed out.
I go to the .m4v file in Finder and open the movie with Quicktime to see whether I can get captions that way. No captions. I check the View menu for Show Closed Captioning. It's grayed out.
At this point I'm thinking these movies do not really HAVE captions, despite what the store description said. However, this proves to be wrong because I turn on my TV and start up my Apple TV 3. I select "Movies" and then "Purchased" and find these movies. When I play these movies via the Apple TV, they all show up on the TV screen with the captions working perfectly.
So, what gives? I've spent hours searching the internet for a solution, but all I can find is that the selection I've made in iTunes preferences *should* make the captions show up in iTunes. I'm stumped. I want to play the movies on my computer in iTunes (or in Quicktime) so that I don't have to be at my house in front of my TV in order the enjoy them. Is there any way I can make these movies play in iTunes with the captions showing? Can anyone make any suggestions? I'd be very grateful if someone could help me achieve this goal.

I have same problem with my son's iPod Touch running iOS 5.1.1.  I set "explicit" to off, but then many songs we purchased on iTunes that are labeled as "clean" do not show up on his iPod Touch. If I set "explicit" to on, they do show up.

  • When I open logic express 8 with eyetv open but not active and i close logic express 8 and make eyetv active it won't show closed captioning even though closed captioning is turned on

when I open logic express 8 with eyetv open but not active and i close logic express 8 and make eyetv active eyetv won't show closed captioning even though closed captioning is turned on.  When I totally close eyetv and reopen eyetv and open a live tv window the closed captioning comes back.  I never noticed this with os leopard, Just after i installed os snow leopard.  All software is up to date only I think, thanks to apple they droped support for logic express.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Does toggling CC off & back on bring it back?

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Probe Shows Data, Chart Does Not

    Hello,
    I have a while loop
I am using a USB-6255 to output/input data and it works fine (see part A & B in picture)
When I added code (see part C) to input temperature data from a NI-6213 a strange thing happened.
The graphs stopped showing data where as all indicators and probes show the data just fine!
The code for the temperature works fine alone
Why is this happening and why only graphs/charts are influenced?
Is there a problem using many acquisition devices in the same loop?

    Here is another picture.
The text output is directly connected to the waveform graph
I get data via text but there is nothing displayed on the graph
    Why is this happening?
All the graphs in the vi do not work

  • Ipod classic not connecting (not even showing 'do not disconnect' on Ipod)

Help! I have an ipod classic and, since I upgraded to itunes 9, I have noticed that, all of a sudden, my ipod won't connect at all.
When I connect the USB cable to the ipod, the screen lights up but does not start charging nor does it show 'do not disconnect', and the ipod is obviously not recognised by Itunes. I have tested the same USB port on my printer with no problems, so it doesn't seem to be the port. I have also tried downgrading to itunes 8 with no problems. I have tested the cable and ipod on another computer and it worked fine. I am basically all out of ideas as to how to fix it.
When I restart the computer with the ipod plugged in, the ipod briefly starts charging and shows 'do not disconnect' before disappearing after a few seconds. It is a total mystery to me.
Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever? I am getting desperate!!!

I have the same problem as you describe it. My iPod Classic 160GB freezes up when I plug the apple usb cable into the iPod. I am using Windows 7 64bit, and iTunes v9.0.2.25 64bit for Windows Vista & Windows 7. Firmware 2.0.3 PC. And I do not have this problem with my iPod Classic 80GB.
This is the workaround to the problem: Reset your iPod. You need to hold down the center button and MENU button TOGETHER, and wait for the iPod to start resetting. Then release the buttons. When the Reset completes, it should start synchronizing normally.

  • HyperTerminal sees a COM port but VISA does not

It should not be possible that HyperTerminal sees a COM port but VISA does not. Does anyone know why or have any ideas?
Here's some more info: I wrote a LabView (LV) program and deployed it (via the Application Builder) to some of our production department's PCs (some Windows XP and some Windows 7). We use it to set up products we design and manufacture through our device's USB serial port. The USB port is actually a virtual COM port (VCP) - a USB to Serial converter or "bridge". We have a custom driver for our device and since each device's USB bridge chip is programmed with a different serial number, every time we connect a new device to the PC the installer runs and assigns a new COM port number. This is so our customers can use multiple devices on a PC. Fine. On one of our production PC's we were close to  COM900 ports (HyperTerminal sees only up to COM256) when suddenly Win7 would not allow any more. We were able to uninstall orphaned (non-present) COM ports from DeviceManager ("DM") by starting it from a command console (DOS window) with a special command-line switch, "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" then "start devmgmt.msc" (I have this in a batch file). In DM View menu you can "Show hidden devices" and uninstall them as if they were connected. I've also tried uninstalling them the normal way when the device was actually connected. Either way, sometimes, not always, depending on the COM port number, after reusing that port number by installing a new device which picks up that old, freed-up number, LV VISA doesn't see it. In other words, when "Refresh" is clicked in the COM port VISA list box, any new devices installed should be and normally are seen. (Refresh is not needed if the application is started after the device's driver is installed. It is only need if the LV application is open with the new device is added.) However, HyperTerminal does see it and lists it in the Properties screen, the "Connect using..." list box. And the port works with HyperTerminal. (Of course we've tried rebooting after uninstalling and/or reinstalling the device, with the same results.)
When I've spoken to the NI Applications Engineers in the past about serial port issues (not about this problem) they have confirmed that if HyperTerminal can see the port then NI VISA should also see it. This is crazy. I am posting this in hope that someone can shed some light on this problem.
    Thank you. -Ed

Good catch. Yes, we're using the Silicon Labs CP2102 and have created a "custom driver" installation package. Our new PCBs have a factory-programmed chip, so the PC reuses that COM port (COM3 on that PC). The problem is when we we re-program the CP2102 (setIDs exe) with our PID, and device strings (including the S/N), the PC runs our installer and assigns the next COM port number. I was hoping that maybe it would go up to 64K or something! Anyway, it surpassed COM256 but we ran into this problem when almost up to COM900.)
There is a registry entry for each SN device, which shows the assigned port. If we delete the key with regedit, the COM port database (don't know the file name) still has the port number. That's where Device Manager comes in. It seems to allow us to manually delete the ports, but it would take quite a while to delete 900. (I was trying to make a batch file for DevCon, but couldn't get it to see the HW ID of the devices in need of deletion.) So we tried manually deleting a few. After doing that Device Manager shows that Windows (and HyperTerminal) can reuse the port number when a new device (new SN) is installed, but, as you know from this post, VISA cannot see unless I manually add it in MAX.
I can't see how it has anything to do with the Silicon Labs driver. I might have to delete ALL of MY devices, then uninstall the driver files, reboot, then reinstall, as you suggested with the SiLabs driver. However, I don't see how VISA will now see these changes. VISA must have it's own database. That's what I thought deleting the ports in MAX would clear out, like a fresh install, but apparently not.
I've been through Silicon Labs' tech support on other issues and they've been able to help on some. I could run this by them.
BTW, have you noticed that Silicon Labs' chip and driver, while faster than NI's own "bridge" or serial-USB converter (I returned it because at $100 it's performance was worse than a $20 converter you can buy in Staples), is substantially slower than a real serial port? For example, our device can transmit 250 readings per second (a 12 byte string). A real serial port used with my LabView program can keep up, i.e.., graph & tabulate at that rate, but with a VCP we only get about 70 RPS. Same code. Can't figure this one out. They say the've tested the driver to 900 KB claimed. We're using 115KB here. Anyway, the VCP driver makes it look like a COM port which LV thinks it is. Why is it slower than a real port when the USB should be able to work almost 10 times faster than I'm using it (up to 1024 bytes per mSec per the full-speed USB spec, which SiLabs claims they verified)?
Anyway, I appreciate your help. Thanks! -Ed

  • Firefox is showing "Server not found" when Fedora 14 NetworkManger is detecting ppp connection through wireless broadband modem

    Hi,
I am using Wireless broadband modem. Network manager is detecting the modem and successfully acquring an ip through ppp0. But Firefox is showing "Server not found". I have found that /etc/resolv.conf is updated properly. And ping or nslookup on some url like www.google.com is working from terminal. So it seems either firefox is not able to use DNS or ppp connection. I have also tried by disabling eth or lo. But of no use.

    See this thread: here.
However, please don't use 192.168.0.2 for the router but 192.168.137.2 instead. Home sharing uses 192.168.137.1 on the sharing computer instead of 192.168.0.1 as it was in earlier Windows versions.
To make the change, unplug the WRT from your network. Wire your second computer to a LAN port of the WRT.
Open the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/
On the main setup page, change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.137.2.
On the same page, disable the DHCP server.
    Save settings.
Unplug the computer. Now wire one of the numbered LAN ports of the WRT to your home sharing computer.
    That's it.

  • Port open or closed

I want to write program to check if a particular port is open or closed? how do i go about it. i have no idea!!!

First, I am assuming you're checking to see whether a
port is open on localhost. I actually didn't read the original question that good. I answered the question on how to check if a port is in use or not, but now I see that the OP asked about if a port is open or not. (Does he/she mean in a firewall?).
Second, I must correct myself. Attempt to bind a
ServerSocket to the given port. If it fails, it's
already open.IMHO I'd say that trying to create a server socket on each port is a bad advise. I would throw such application away as fast as possible if I was an administrator.
I don't know about kajbj, but this seems easy to me.Easy yes, but not good. You should instead use the netstat command (and not create a java application at all)
If you're checking something other than localhost,
then you would use Socket. It's still not difficult,
but it can be problematic in that net admins like
thwarting this type of port scanning.Agree. Many security applications will signal port scans as a hacking attempt.

  • Ports are being block (not responding)

Ports are being block (not responding), port forwarding is configured on the router and firewall is turned off on the server (osx 10.8).  Am I missing anything?
Server has a static IP which I forwarded to ports to
I'm setting up VPN server and need ports 500, 1701, 1723, 4500 open
    Thanks
    -Allen

Depending on the exact set-up of the network, L2TP requires UDP ports 500, 1701 and 4500 and the IP-ESP protocol, which is IP protocol 50; ESP.
Other than ESP (which is protocol 50 and not port 50), these are UDP ports, and not TCP.
TCP 1723 is used for PPTP.  Not L2TP.
It is common for L2TP passthrough to fail when more than one connection is active.
As compared with L2TP, PPTP is usually easier to get going around NAT.  Though conversely, L2TP is rather more secure than PPTP.
Check your Mac OS X Server firewall settings, too.  If you have some outboard network device providing a NAT gateway, try dropping the server firewall.
Use of an external firewall-gateway with an embedded VPN server is something I've variously recommended, too.  (I find that VPN NAT passthrough is something best avoided, as VPNs and NAT are operating at crossed purposes.  VPNs seek to keep connection end-points known, while NAT tries to hide those connection end-points.  Doing the VPN processing on the Internet side of the NAT is just... well, easier.)
Also ensure that your ISP is not blocking VPN connections.  While you might be on static IP, confirm the ports are open.  Trust, but verify.  Get yourself a UDP port scanner, and have a look.
If it's permissible within your ISP service tier (and depending on what protocols you're testing), probe the specific target ports using telnet or the openssl s_client command and (particularly for this case) the nc (netcat) tools, and see if the ports allow access.  nc can run port probes on UDP, which is the key piece here given telnet and s_client target TCP and TCP SSL connections.  Probably something like the nc -zu w.x.y.z udp-port command.

  • SCCM 2012 DB servers showing as Not Monitored

    Hi,
    SCCM 2012 MP version 5.0.7804.1000 on SCOM 2012 SP1.
SCCM database servers are showing as not monitored. I can see three entries in Servers and Site System Roles. SCOM has successfully discovered entry for each SQL node and the SQL cluster name, however they are not monitored.
    Checked documentation/online forums/blogs, but couldn't figure out.
All gents are running as Local System
    Proxy enabled on all servers
All rules/monitors/discovery are currently default settings.
Recycled SCOM Agent on these nodes, with no luck.
Do the Run As Account need some permissions? Which one and what permissions?
    Thanks, Harry :-)

The SCCM 2012 Management Pack did not support low privilege accounts, so this means – the SCOM Agent on the SCCM 2012 server
MUST be running as Local System, and
    not with a service account.
    http://msandbu.wordpress.com/2012/04/23/monitoring-sccm-2012-via-scom-2012/
Also check if you have Antivirus that you allow SCOM Application and ports in exception rule. Try to disable antivirus and check if you can monitor using SCOM.

My USB charger is not supporting while i am connecting from PC to iPad for charging (showing as " Not Charging"), Kindly advice me

    Hi Folks,
I have tried most of what have been said here ( thank you for the great Job) but unforunatally it didn't solve the issue.
However, now the "Not Charging" message in the right corner disappeared and my iPad is charging normally from my laptop.
The reason behind that is using the USB3.0 port in my Dell inspiron N5110. Earlier, I was using the USB 2.0  ports and that is why it was showing that message but as sooon as I pluged it in the eSATA USB 3.0 port , the message disapeared and the iPad started charging normally.
So don't waste ur time here and there try to plug it to USB 3.0 port and it will works, Insha ALLAH.
    Cheers
