Ports unusable

I am using 2950 switches which is connected to Core 6500. When my switch trunk fails this port becomes unusable. When my trunks fails, It happens everyday for atleast 3-4 times in one hour. This happens in all the 2900 switches.

Hello there,
could you give us more information on this issue?
what kind of errors are you getting? how is the connection between these switches set?

  • Mac Pro Late 2010 Windows 7 - no rear usb ports

    I recently purchased a new Mac Pro 12 core and put 12GB of RAM in it. I have been having nothing but trouble with Windows 7 from day 1. I have used Boot Camp in the past and have successfully installed XP on my MacBook Pro, my quad core 1st gen Mac Pro, and the first gen intel Mac Mini. I have had no issues whatsoever.
    I avoided Vista altogether because of the horror stories I kept hearing about but W7 was highly recommended to me by people who have it installed on their Macs. I have had zero productivity in Windows since the purchase of this new machine and it has been a huge regret. I have done 3 successive re-installs and keep coming up with the same problems. To give you some more info of what I have tried: Each time I install, I use the boot camp assistant app (in the Utilities folder) on the mac side, install my purchased copy of windows 7 64-bit, then once it's installed I put the Mac OS installer disc back in and let it install all the boot camp drivers (3.1). Finally, I go straight to the apple site and download boot camp 3.2. Everything seems cool except...
    The 3 USB ports on the back of the machine as well as the top USB port on the front of the machine are completely disabled. Whether I have something plugged into the back or not, the ports do not work, however, I need to plug things in for the problem to show itself in the Device Manager in W7. (USB Root Hub (2 ports) - - Unused Port - - *UNKNOWN DEVICE*
    Not only is this a total hit to not be able to use those ports, but this 'malfunctioning device' is causing the blue screen of death each time I try to shut down Windows. (the USB device... the hub itself?? nothing plugged into it)
    I have also been trying to download a very large piece of software in Windows 7 and the main download is almost 2 hours. Since I've never actually sat down and watched the bar go by for that long, I never see when it happens... but I'll come walking back into the room and the computer is sitting there as a Mac!! What the ****?! Without warning!
    I'm fried from this. Been eluding me since I got this computer. I'm about to just install the 32 bit XP... take the speed hit and be done with it! Unless somebody out there can help me with this problem.
    Any additional information I can give you about what I've seen and what I've done is here. All of these problems exist only in Windows. The Mac side of this computer works perfectly in all areas.
    I've seen the error message: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems(code 43)
    Windows did not shut down properly (Get this error every time at startup)
    I tried deleting registry files (really bad... had to completely repair W7... then did my 3rd re-install)
    Does anybody have any idea of what is going on here?

    Thanks Hatter. I have thought about a lot of this stuff in my trials and I'm still at a roadblock. A few things to note:
    I agree that W7 Pro is needed for this machine. You had mentioned something about an electric ISO but I purchased the actual discs from Best Buy and have gone through the entire installation process a few times now. I forgot to mention in my original post that there is nothing 'cracked' in terms of software anywhere on this machine. Every single thing is legit and in most cases, coming from original discs.
    I was hoping to avoid having to put Windows on a separate HD because then it would mean one less internal storage bay for my video storage drives (on the Mac side). Plus there's no guarantee that putting W7 on a separate drive will not produce the same results with the hardware (although I AM going to try this method... just to see if it clears up the hardware problem.) Rolling with this configuration long-term will be an absolute last resort thing but certainly not off the table. (I'll let you know if it works or not.)
    For now, Windows 7 runs through boot camp on my new Mac pro. I have only 1 active usb port on the front (the lower one) which I use exclusively for keyboard and mouse... no choice. All other usb ports dead. All firewire ports seem to work fine. The machine also crashes on every shut down (sometimes with a blue screen... sometimes not) and reminds me about it on every successive startup. It also reminds me that windows has disabled a usb device on every startup. This hardware problem seems to periodically cause the machine to shut down and restart as a mac if left unattended for more than a few minutes. Basically, W7 is totally useless to me through boot camp on a boot camp created partition on my Mac boot drive. I will let you know I have success creating a separate hard drive as a Windows partition.
    Any additional help is greatly appreciated! This one is really puzzling to me!

  • Meeting Place 8- Ports default behavior

    Hi,
    In MP8 when I schedule a meeting with 5 audio ports, how can I restrict this meeting to use only 5 ports and not more than that, considering some ports are not reserved in any meeting.
    I also wish to know the default behavior of ports in MP8. Is it available on docwiki ?
    Thanks
    spvaidya

    Hello
    The MP8 system uses Audio Floater ports and Overbook ports to allocate extra/unexpected users in meetings.
    If you set these values to 0, you will configure the system to not allow extra users in the meeting once you have reached the max. number of ports allocated for that meeting.
    Audio floater ports
    Applies to scheduled meeting resource allocation  only. Number of voice ports that  are reserved as floater ports. You use floater ports for any scheduled  meeting to  accommodate unanticipated additional participants. Configuring voice  floater  ports reduces the number of ports that are available for scheduling  meetings. Voice floater ports are also used by meeting recordings. See Audio  and Video  Recording Resources and Port Usage. Restrictions:
    This number cannot  exceed the value of the Audio  licensed ports field. Changing the  licenses might affect the upper and lower limits for this  parameter.
    For recommendations for determining the number of floater ports, see the   Planning Guide for Cisco Unified MeetingPlace at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/
    products/sw/ps5664/ps5669/products_implementation_design_guides_list.html. Default: 2
    Audio overbook ports
    Applies to scheduled meeting resource allocation  only. Number of voice ports to  allow for scheduled meetings that exceed the number of available voice  ports on  the system. Configuring voice overbook ports increases the risk of users  being  unable to attend scheduled meetings. If you use this feature, you assume that users who are scheduled to  attend meetings  do not always attend, leaving their reserved voice ports unused. Once  all voice  ports are in use, other users who try to attend a voice meeting will not  be able to  get through. Restrictions:
    This number cannot  exceed twice the value of the Audio  licensed ports field. Changing the  licenses might affect the upper and lower limits for this  parameter.
    For recommendations for determining the number of overbook ports, see  the  Planning Guide for Cisco Unified MeetingPlace at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/
    products/sw/ps5664/ps5669/products_implementation_design_guides_list.html. Default: 0

  • Problem fetching policy-file-request

    According to
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/fplayer9_security_print.html
    quote:
    * A SWF file may no longer make a socket connection to its
    own domain without a socket policy file. Prior to version
    9,0,115,0, a SWF file was permitted to make socket connections to
    ports 1024 or greater in its own domain without a policy file.
    * HTTP policy files may no longer be used to authorize
    socket connections. Prior to version 9,0,115,0, an HTTP policy
    file, served from the master location of /crossdomain.xml on port
    80, could be used to authorize a socket connection to any port 1024
    or greater on the same host.
    So with the tighter security measures, a policy file has to
    be fetched on port 843 or on the same port on which a connection is
    desired. That leads to another problem. The policy file request
    made by the player has a simple format: clear text
    <policy-file-request/> is sent as raw data bytes on
    the ports.
    As most firewalls block such raw data traffic (of unknown
    protocols) on all the ports, this means that the policy file fetch
    will fail almost always if the user is behind any firewall.
    This will render all SWFs, that do not use well known ports,
    unusable. Does anyone know what is the solution to this
    problem? Or am I missing something here?

    Common guys, someone has to know what to do here.
    I have read all that I can read and tried all that I could
    and the flash app is not accepting my policy file.

  • Libretto - USB Device Not Recognised error message

    Hi there
    I have a workaround for this problem which ocassionally happens. It is just to reconnect the USB hub(as recommended by Windows). I was just wondering if someone knows why this happens and how to fix it. The error is :--
    "USB device not recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it.
    USB Roob Hub (2 ports) - Unused Port, Unknown Device.
    Recommendation: try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device. "
    I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Kind regards
    Julia.

    Hello Julia
    It is always advantageous to mention which model you have exactly. Obviously the external device is not recognized correctly. Check if there is some driver that must be installed before you can use it properly.

  • RAID Logs

    Hi,
    We have a late 2009 Intel Xserve with hardware RAID configured with 3 disks in RAID 5 configuration.
    Our disk 1 (bay 1) failed. Initially when we noticed this the disk was detected in the RAID utility but before we could do anything else the rest of the RAID seemed to fail.
    We booted the server from the CD and the RAID utility then showed no Bay 1 but did show Bays 2 and 3 but they were in a roaming state.
    We replaced Bay 1 and RAID util saw the new drive but the only thing it would let us do was create a new RAID set so we have invariably lost the RAID. We have now restored the server and are up and running again, but I was wondering if there are any hardware logs that are independent of the OS that I can look at to check what happened. In the restored OS RAID util logs I have the following:

    We are currently running a RAID verify after the RedundancyScrub failure which happened during the restore process.
    I can see that the drive has been reported as being removed and reinserted, however this would have been physically impossible as I am assured there was no-one on site at these times.
    I am assuming that the disk itself failed as I tried this in an external closure and it didn't work, just clicked.
    I am really trying to see if I can get logs to determine why the rest of the RAID failed, as I think this can be done on Dell servers as the hardware has it's own logs. Is this true of the Xserve?

    Initially it was. However I was not on site and my junior engineer has only a little Mac experience so I didn't want him to do anything until I arrived. By the time I did the server had just restarted and was showing the Broken Folder Icon. I booted from the CD and in the RAID utility it did not detect the drive in Bay 1 and Bay 2 and 3 were showing as roaming.
    Like I said, I am all up and running again with a spare disk and a complete reinstall, but I have been asked why this happened and wanted to produce some logs to try and explain why the RAID failed and also to see if there is anything that I can implement in order to prevent a recurrence in the future.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Mac Pro (2006) SSD Hard Drive Upgrade

    I have a Mac Pro from 2006, but it is running a but slow on the hard drive front.  Plus, the drives are now seven years old and I do not want to chance the data failure possiblity.  What is the format I need in order to get two or three new SSD drives which are compatible with my Mac Pro?  Also, do I need to purchase any adapters or converters for the SSD drives to work within the machine?  Finally, how do I copy my current primary drive to the new SSD drive so it could take the place of the current main SATA hard drive in the unit?

    You don't need more than one SSD.
    You can buy WD 10K VelocityRaptors. $100 250GB / $125 500GB / 1TB ?
    Or WD Black 1-2TB for data.
    Memory is important

    Yes you should replace and upgrade disk drives more like every two years. Yours (and mine) are 6 .5 yrs old now. And huge changes in capacity and performance.
    To use an SSD it depends where you put it. There are 2 SATA ports unused on the logicboard you can access. An IcyDock for older Mac Pro only if you use the drive bays. I run the 2 ports out the back.
    An ATI 5770 is a great upgrade for Lion.

  • FOR GURUS: Over Current Notice - USB device drawing too much power

    Hi,
    When I plug a USB extender cable to any USB port on any Mac tested so far, I get the warning:
    "USB Over Current Notice. The USB device is currently drawing too much power. The port it is attached to will be deactivated".
    In fact, that freezes the Mac mouse and keyboard until the USB extender cable is unplugged, and renders the used USB port unusable until the next restart.
    What is going on? Such extender cable worked fine until Virtual PC was open with Windows XP XP2 in safe mode on an iMac G5 (20-inch) with Mac OS X 10.4.3. A 1GB flash pen was inserted, and its files were seen via "My computer". Then the flash pen was taken out (without properly ejecting it via Windows) and someone inserted a 2.2 GB USB hard disk, which froze the Mac and caused the reported problem from that moment.
    So it seems that the USB cable is now somehow defective, but I wonder if it could be fixed, since it does not seem to have any internal circuit but just the USB connectors and cables. So I wonder what is going on...
    Thanks.

    ¡Hola, Gabriel!
    USB Overcurrent Protection issues arise when one or more of the USB devices draw too much power or, by adding a device to a USB hub, one exceeds the current budget for the entire chain. A detailed explanation can be found in this article, where it states:"Should the cumulative current drawn by a group of downstream ports exceed a preset value, the overcurrent protector removes power from all downstream ports. Overcurrent circuits are used to protect against catastrophic device failures, software errors that lead to devices turning on when the current budget has been exceeded, and user-caused events such as the shorting out of connector pins."See also "USB: Hub Description" for important information on self-powered vs. bus-powered UBS hubs.
    Your Apple Pro keyboard is a bus-powered USB hub. Some displays continaing USB ports may act as either bus-powered or self-powered hubs: one has to consult the display's documentation for details.
    • If USB Overcurrent problems arise using a bus-powered, third-party USB hub, try a self-powered hub or connect the USB device directly to one of the built-in USB ports on the computer itself.
    • If USB Overcurrent Protection issues arise when a device is connected directly to one of the built-in USB ports on the computer itself, then the peripheral device or its cable is either damaged or defective.
    Note that you can not put two bus-powered hubs in series. In addition to the article "USB: Hub Description", see also "Apple Pro Keyboard: Devices Connected to Hub May Not Work."
    Good luck!

  • Vpn cannot coonect: vpn type = Cisco IPsec

    Howdy,
    I cannot connect to my vpn server at work receiving this error message "The VPN server did not respond. Verify the server address and try reconnecting."
    I have verified, using the packet sniffer wireshark, that the first isakmp packet goes out to my work server and a correctly formatted isakmp reply (with a single selected proposal/transform SA payload) returns in reply. Then my racoon retransmits as if it never heard the reply.
    I tried turning off the osx appliacation firewall, but get the same result... a correct isakmp reply does return from the server, but my racoon seems to never hear it and it just retransmits message-1.
    What are the possible cluprits that could throw out my isakmp reply packet before racoon hears it?
    The /var/log/system.log file holds these relevant entries:
    Aug 19 09:44:28 narwal racoon[467]: Connecting.
    Aug 19 09:44:28 narwal racoon[467]: IKE Packet: transmit success. (Initiator, Aggressive-Mode message 1).
    Aug 19 09:44:38 narwal configd[15]: SCNCController: Disconnecting. (Connection tried to negotiate for, 0 seconds).
    Aug 19 09:44:38 narwal racoon[467]: Disconnecting. (Connection tried to negotiate for, 9.966375 seconds).
    I also manually configured and started racoon turning up the debug level very high and find no new info that way. racoon simply does not get the reply packet that I can see in wireshark.
    Any help appreciated.

    Additional info:
    While attempting to connect, I run a `netstat` command and see that even the OS seems to not hear the reply from the server:
    udp4 0 0 localhost.ipsec-msft .
    udp4 0 0 localhost.isakmp .
    udp4 0 0 192.168.2.105.ipsec-ms .
    udp4 0 0 192.168.2.105.isakmp .
    Sooooo... reiterating the question:
    What potential culprits on the packet path might be throwing out this reply packet even before the OS udp layer? I think I have eliminated the snow-leapord application firewall as the culprit by turning it off and getting the same result.
    And just to prove that wireshark really is seeing the return packet, I am posting the (trimmed) tshark -V output here too:

  • Why do i get a RMI ConnectException ?

    i have a simple client server application where the server class is implemented by
    a class called AgentA, as shown below. Agent A will provide a form to the client when the getForm() method is invoked by the client. the program runs fine on my PC at home which runs on windows xp, but it doenst run on linux.
    /**SERVER CLASS*/
    import java.rmi.server.UnicastRemoteObject;
    import java.rmi.Naming;
    import java.rmi.RMISecurityManager;
    import java.rmi.RemoteException;
    import java.net.MalformedURLException;
    import java.rmi.*;
    public class AgentA extends UnicastRemoteObject implements HasDataInterface {
         /** exports object, to allow it to receive incoming client requests*/
         public AgentA()throws RemoteException{
              super();
              System.out.println("Creating server Object");
    /** returns an input form to the client when invoked */
         public void getForm() throws RemoteException{
              System.out.println(" get form");
    /** instantiates the input form, where the form is a simple
    gui type form
              Form f = new Form();
    public static void main(String args[]){
         try{
              AgentA ag= new AgentA();
    /**this line doesnt work properly i think*/
              Naming.rebind("rmi://138.37.94.101:5577/Server",ag);
                   System.out.println("Server Ready");
              catch(Exception e){
                   System.out.println("error : " + e.getMessage());
              System.out.println("finish");
    The Server program (Agent A) prints 'finish' but never terminates.
    Ive tried to use the folowing replacements:
    Naming.rebind("rmi://:5577/Server",ag);
    Naming.rebind("rmi://ip address:5577/Server",ag);
    i have also tried using the bind() method instead but this doesnt make any differnce.
    Naming.rebind("rmi://ip address:5577/Server",ag);
    i get this error when i compile my client class
    Connection refused to host: 138.37.94.101; nested exception is:
    java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused
    I would very much appreciate if some one could put me out of my misery!!!
    cheers
    Kaleem

    Sorry for not mentioning it before, but at the moment for simplicity reasons i am running the client and server program on the same PC. So the form at the moment will be displayed to me, as the server and client programs are on the same machine. Obviously i need to change this in the future. I randomly chose port 5577, as this was a port unused on my linux machine which is running over a network. The default port 1099 was already in use, so i chose 5577. I am still baffled why the Naming call isnt working on linux. I thought that the Naming call's format was as follows :
    Naming.rebind("protocol//host:port/objectname", object);
    where objectname is a simple String name to uniquely identify each object in the registry .
    I hope this will help provide enough information for someone to help me in my moment of crisis!

  • Found an Epson printer: Question about adapter

    Hi,
    I found an Epson 740 printer on the street. I actually once owned the Epson 750 Photo, so I know this will work with my old, old iMac. It has a SCSI port, a USB port, and some other port (sort of trapezoidal). How can I find out what kind of adapter to buy for it?
    If you have a link or something, I'd love to hear about it. I do know it doesn't work with my camera's USB adapter. Just thought I'd ask.
    Thanks,
    Allan(o)

    Hi, Allano. The 740's USB port can be connected directly to your iMac's USB port using a standard USB A-B cable, leaving the printer's other ports unused. No adapter of any kind is needed.

  • Problems with my LinkSys wireless routers since getting AT&T u-verse

    I recently installed AT&T u-verse. Every since it's hit or miss on whether I can connect to my two linksys wireless routers. Sometimes it connects fine but other times I can try for hours and never obtain an IP address. I never have a problem connecting to the 2wire wireless router which was installed when u-verse was installed but it doesn't have coverage for my whole house.
    The AT@T tech says the 2Wire has problems with routers being configured behind their router??? He said that I need to set my Linksys wireless routers up as access points???
    Anyone have any suggestions on what to try? Anyone else have issues like this after u-verse was installed?
    Thanks

    I've had AT&T U-verse since March, and I wish it wasn't the best option in my area. I have been through 3 of those 2-Wire Gateways and as best I can track down it's that DHCP Server. I have a BEFSR41v3 (and yes, I am NOT using the WAN port, just the switch at IP 192.168.1.10) and a WAP54G (IP 192.168.1.11) using WPA2-PSK and have been using for years now. AT&T tried telling me it was my wireless devices, which strangely enough worked PERFECTLY fine on my Linksys hardware with the same SSID/Key when I was with TWC. My wireless devices would work fine for a while, then gradually start having problems until by 2 weeks they are completely unable to negotiate an IP from the DHCP. Called AT&T, they reset the gateway, and everything works for 2 more weeks. Most my computers (wired or WiFi) are manually IP configured. Only my laptop (also used on a college WiFi) and visitors use the DHCP server (and the AT&T Boxes).  THUS far I've been reasonably successful by limiting the AT&T Gateway to 3 addresses for my Boxes, letting it issue them to the TV's, then adding my linksys router (ignoring the WAN port and using DHCP on with an allocation of 15 addresses) and setting the Linksys WAP to the #4 port. This weird setup now gets short lasting fits in the form of "Limited Connectivity" for my WiFi devices using Dyamic IP.  It can still access the LAN perfect, only that device has no Internet Access, and Windows says i'm being blocked by a Firewall. It self resolves in a few minutes without me doing anything and it MIGHT come once or so a month, or until they run another update which seems to ALWAYS reset that gateway (I've given up changing the password and now keep a txt on every system since it seems to reset at least monthly). A few days ago it's started giving me IP conflicts that disappeared within 1-2 minutes, which is odd since it is my manual IP's getting the conflicts... It did that for 2 days then hasn't since.
    Currently I'm wired as...
    AT&T Gateway 192.1681.254 w/ 3 DHCP range 1.160-163, WiFi disabled, and 3 LAN ports to 2 TV's and my BEFSR41
    BEFSR41 192.168.1.10 w/ 15 DHCP range 1.60-74, WAN port unused, 4 LAN ports to 1 Desktop, 2 unmanaged Netgear 1000 switches, and 1 to the WAP
    WAP54G 192.168.1.11 with it's gateway set to 192.168.1.10
    1 Netgear switch provides wired access for the entertainment center (PS3, DVD player, DVR, etc) and open ports for visitors
    Other Netgear switch is upstairs and runs to 2 additional desktops and one more cable box...
    All my wired NICs are set to a 1.2x address and all configured WiFi devices (Wii and a pair of Android phones) i have on a 1.3x.
    Manual IP with a 255.255.255.0 mask and gateway 192.168.1.254, manually entering the DNS from the gateway's Broadband Details page
    As far as I've been able to test and observe, that gateway is tempermental (and intermittent so tech support can't EVER find a problem conveniently) with anything using the DHCP other than the cable boxes. My manual set devices have had no problems other than that strange IP conflict that popped up on 3 computers, bugged me 2 days, then just never came back (also ironically the monday i was going to call a tech support about it)
    I've attempted to disable the DHCP entirely from the gateway and only use my Linksys DHCP. That seemed to work for a few hours untill, i'm guessing, the leases expired. Then all 3 TV's stopped. Everything getting it's IP manually or from the Linksys continued just fine, internet and all. The cable boxes only returned when i re-activated the 2-Wire's DHCP Server.
    I would like to try using the Linksys router to isolate my LAN (and everything else i can) from that 2-Wire with a cascade, just link across on a single static IP to dodge that DHCP, but i havn't been able to get the cablebox upstairs to work off the Linksys DHCP. Even then, I'm not sure how i can get a network split to work. If i only isolated the DHCP over my WiFi, they would still at least loose file-sharing with the my File/Media/Backup PC downstairs. Move that to the other side, then the PC's upstairs loose access. As is it's MOSTLY stable though, i just have to pull apart the gateway and cut down it's DHCP range so my devices will actually get an IP from my linksys. If i don't take away the 2-wires, i still get a high IP fail rate. It would be great if i'm overlooking some way to force all DHCP IP requests -OTHER- than the cable boxes to get their IP from the Linksys and not the 2-Wire
    Far as jdaley, I havn't tried to set a cascade since I'm having problems figuring out a means to isolate the boxes (and 2-wire) away from the LAN since one box is upstairs sharing a single cable with the computers there. Someone else seemed to report a success that way. If not that, then only other thing I can think of might be to just manually set all your WiFi IP addresses by hand
    Thanks for any other ideas on dodging this 2-Wire's DHCP I'd really appreciate it. I'm really hoping i'm just overlooking something SIMPLE.
