Position Sub VI front panel

Is there an easy way of positioning the Front panel of a sub VI on a coordinate point of the calling VI?

I just found the SnapToPanel utility on the community.
Description
The SnapToPanel VI enables you to position a Target VI window relative to a Reference VI window.
Use the SnapToPanel VI in your application to control the position of sub-panels relative to the main application panel.

  • Sub vi front panel opens when main vi opens

When I open my main vi I have one of my sub vi front panels that opens.  I looked in the properties for the sub vi and Show front panel when loaded is NOT checked. Is there something else I need to look at?

    please clarify;
    Q1)
    The sub-VI FP opens when
You open the top VI but BEFORE you run it
    OR
The sub-VI FP opens after you start the top level VI
    Q2)
If the above Q was after you run....
Is the sub-VI running or paused when it opens?
If it is puased you may have a breakpoint set in it.

i created boolean references in my main vi block diagram and copied them to my sub vi front panel. when wire my reference in my main vi to one the input node of the sub vi the wire is broken. the error says its a class conflict why?

    Expanding and clarifying what BJD said;
After you create the temporary sub-VI that BJD mentioned, open its front panel and copy the reference control that LV created when it created the sub-VI.
This reference control will be correct class etc that you need. Use the control to replace the original control that you were attempting to wire up.
The technique of "create sub-VI...copy" always works for me.
There is one more thing that you should watch out for.
The mechanical action of the boolean can not be set for latch action when attempting to read the value using a value property node.

  • LV 8.5 opens all sub-VI front panels

    Hello,
Recently I again saw a strange occurrance that has happened to me about 10-12 times over the past year. Here specifically I am using LV 8.5 with the cRIO and FPGA module. When I was running a new RT VI from the developer environment, (deploying to the cRIO) the result looked something like this:
All the sub-VI front panels are opened, and shown in their reserved or running state.
None of these VIs are set to show front panel when called or opened, but all are sub-VIs of the top level VI within the project. It seems to have replicated a "Find all VIs in memory, within the project" and then "Show front panel" Invoke. The troubling thing is that this is not really repeatable, when I have closed all the VIs and run the VI again, it is fine. I have seen the same behavior in LV 8.2, 8.21 as well as when deploying to cFP-2120 or when on a Host computer.
Has anyone else seen this or are there any ideas of what is going on?
    Thanks,
    Mello

Well now that I have seen to image, I recall having seen this myself.
Like you, it was when I was deploying to an RT target and I was not able to recreate this behaviour.
It was either an 8.0 or a 8.2 app.
So all I can do is confirm that you are not alone, but can not offer a solution.

  • Open sub VI front panel in a tab-- Possible?

Well, the question is basically in the subject: Is it possible to call sub VI's and display their front panel in a tab. I do NOT wish to have the front panel in a new window when called.

The answer is also basically in the picture:
You can find SubPanel element in the same palette as the Tab Control container. Place a SubPanel on the Tab Control and wire a reference of the VI whose front panel you want to display.

Or have you thought about using a tab control? You can organize controls in pages and have those controls call sub-VIs with or without displaying the front panel of the sub-VI. See the Tab Control Properties.vi example that ships with LabVIEW.
From any LabVIEW window, select Help from the window menubar, then Find Examples >> Search, then enter "tab control" (without the quotes) in the box labeled Type a keyword to find:

  • Have a program in which a sub vi front panel pops up when the main vi is loaded

    I have a strange problem.
This problem only occures after building an application using LV 8.6 Professional version Application Builder, and I have installed it onto the target computer. It doesn't happen when running the development system.
When I load the program on the target computer, one of the subvi's front panels used in the application appears on top of the main vi's front panel.
This subvi should never appear on the front panel at any time during the program exicution.
It happens to be the Write to Spreadsheet.vi that is part of the standard vi library.
I have checked all calls to this subvi to verify that it has not be modified to make it load or appear when the main vi is loaded.
It is called at 4 different times during the program exicution but in no instance is it set to show the front panel.
Has anyone seen this and if so what was the fix?
    Solved!

Does the exe file run on your development computer without the popup?
Can you post a VI that demonstrates this behavior?
You've probably already checked, but there are two places that need setting, the SubVI Node Setup, and the File Proeprties Execution tab. See attached jpegs.

  • Opening multiple sub VIs (front panels) in an application

    Hi,
I am working on a small process control application. The main VI represents a layout of various equipment (pumps, valves, heat exchangers). Each TYPE of equipment
can be turned on/off through a particular subVI. The subVI is displayed when the operator clicks on the component.  At the moment only one subVI front panel can be loaded. I would like to have multiple panels open at the same time; this to include multiple instances of a same VI and different subVIs.
I have tried to set properties in the WindowsApperance dialog box but cannot acheive the desired operation.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Trust my personal experience: You do NOT want multiple dialog windows open.  The users will hate you and curse your name if you do.  You really want to use subpanels and limit what the user can do.  Subpanels are a way of inserting a VI's front panel into another VI's front panel.  So you want to have a section of your main front panel that the user can load whatever control subVI they need.

  • How adjust front panel placement of a sub VI in the subpanel

Ok so I've learnt how to use tabs and how to place Sub VI's in the tabs. Last, I would like to change the position of the front panel of some of these sub VI's
because they're not positioned to my liking
    Whats the way to go?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

by default, a VI loaded into a subpanel will show up with the same FP position as when you last saved it.  That's not often what you want, and it's easy to move the FP around inside the window and forget you're changing it.  But this should be good enough to get going.
one trick that I use is to load the subvi into the subpanel with the same origin in each.  So both the front panel and the pane that it is in have their own coordinates.  For the pane (which is normally the window boundary, and here is the subpanel boundary) the origin is 0,0 at the upper left corner.  On the front panel, look for a little dot with the grid visible.  That's (0,0) on the FP.
So what we can do programmatically is to use property nodes to set the pane origin to the front panel origin:
     (LV2009f2)
ok so the snippet ate my constant but there should be two 0's (I32) in that cluster.  Just create a constant on the Origin property and it'll make it.

  • Open front panel of sub vi when called - how?

    Hello,
I have a VI with several sub VIs.
I want some of the sub VI front panels to be opened, if they are not yet opened and if they are called but I want them to stay in the background.
There are two SubVI Node setups: "Open Front Panel when loaded" and "show front panel when called"
Both are not what I want. If I select "show front panel when called", then the front panels are opened but flickering because they are called often and alternately.

@smercurio_fc: With your example I can see if a subVI is opened or not, but how can I open the subVI during run time if it is not opened
Just call the method with it set to "write" (right-click and select "Change to Write"). I don't recall if LV 7.0 has a Front Panelpen method. Check the LabVIEW manual.

  • How to bring a VI front panel to the front (of all open windows) when the parent VI calls a sub-VI in Test Stand.

In Test Stand when I call a sub-VI front panel, the pop-up window goes behind all the windows and the user just waits for the screen. I want the pop-up to come to the front so that the user can know what to do. I couldn't find any property that I can set which would make the called VI go to the front.

What version of TestStand are you using? Here are the TestStand palettes in LabVIEW for TestStand 2.0 and 3.1. You can also set a VI to be modal in  VI Properties>Window Appearance. Select Dialog or go to Cutomize and change the Window Behavior.

  • Can not open front panel sub VI when running an application VI.

When I create an application of my program a problem occurs. When I select options (press a button or so) from the main front panel that should result in a popup menu (sub VI cal) LabVIEW indicates that something is happening but the front panel does not open. The mouse indicator changes to the time glass so LabVIEW is doing something but the window of the sub VI does not open.
The problem has the same characteristics on several places. There are some sub VI front panels that opens but I ca not find the reason for why these open and not other.

    Hi
there are three ways trhough which you can force a subVI to show its front panel
    1. open the perticular SUB VI
click File->VI properties select window appearence catagory.
click customize button and select "Show Front Panel when called" and "close afterwads if originally closed" check boxes
    save the VI
whenever you use this Sub VI every time it will pop up front panel
    2. dont perform the changes suggested in option 1. place the instance of subVI in your main application and if you want that instance to popup a front panel then right click on subVI and Select "SubVI Node Setup" again select "Show Front Panel when called" and "close afterwads if originally closed" check boxes
with this option only certain instances of SUB VI will cause pop up to occur
    3. this is the most flexible option. use invoke node to show front panel. in invoke node select show front panel method to popup the VI and use close front panel method to close the pop up window.

  • Button Function Problem When Showing Front Panel of Sub VI

    Good Afternoon,
I have a created a simplified version of a much more complicated vi to illustrate the problem I am having. Attached is a main vi and a sub vi. The main vi has a boolean which says to open or close the front panel of the sub-vi. This works great. However, the other push button ( " My Button Function" ) on the main vi does not work properly when the sub-vi front panel is being displayed. It is supposed to be a  "switch until released" button. However, if you try to click and hold it down while the sub-vi panel is displayed it acts as if I am clicking the button rather than being able to hold it down? I was wondering why showing the sub-vi front panel makes this happen? And also, if anyone has any recommendations to fixing this problem?
    Attachments:
    main.vi ‏12 KB
    sub.vi ‏5 KB

What is happening is the loop is running very fast.  It is constantly reading the open SubVI button and opening the subVI if true, even if the subVI front panel is already open.  If you are trying to hold down the other button, the opening of the subVI front panel is taking away the focus from the main VI and thus acting like you let up on the button.
Maintain the status of the subVI in a shift register and only open or close it if the status changes.  See attached Main VI.

  • How to control the size/position of LabVIEW DLL front panel in MFC application?

I would like to make a MFC application which loads a DLL generated by LabVIEW application builder. How can I control the size and position of the front panel in my MFC application? Thanks.

Did you build the DLL from Labview yourself? If so, you just add another VI to the list. This VI accepts the Title of a front panel and top, left, right, bottom value of the front panel (VI property WindowBond). I'm not familiar with building DLLs using Labview so I really could not help you on how to build the DLL, but I believe it can be done (multiple VIs as multiple functions in a single DLL).
To get the windows bonds for a vi, you need to use VI server property. Check out the examples under labview directory. There are plenty of them to demostrate how to use this feature.
