Positional Audio in BF2 - X-Fi Xtreme mu

Not sure if I will be able to protray this right or not so forgive me ahead of time.
IN BF2 while in vehicles my center channel seems to be off to the right. for example while driving a jeep if I turn my head so that I am looking straight ahead, sound seems to be "low". BUT If I turn my head to the right (I am talking about in-game head, not MY head) then there is this "awakening" of sound. The jeep has a very "full" sound. If I pan my "in-game head" left to right, there seems to be this small area off to the right that should be in the center. In other words the position seems to be off. Gun shots come from the center and seem fine; it only seems to be in vehicles. Panning the tank turret also gives me this effect. It makes me want to dri've my vehicle off to the right because it seems that's where the front of the vehicle is.
Does this make sense to anyone else? Does this happen to anyone else?

I posted this in another thread, but it is relevant to using the THX diagnostic "TAB":
After loading the driver set from Sept. 9, 06, I went in to my system and made sure everything was working. From the THX control panel I ran the channle test, and the girl came through on each channel correctly (left, center, right, R right, R left). When I set the control panel to the diagnostic tab, AND use the white noise diagnostic, my white noise STARTs out of the center speaker instead of the left. SO it goes - Left out of center; center out of right; nothing out of rear right, rear right out of rear left.
When I go back to the tab that shows the colorred connections and use the channel test, The girl starts out on the center speaker and again it's Left from center, center from right, nothing from Rear right, and Rear right from Rear left.
My fix was to uninstal; reinstall from cd, and NOT use the diagnostic tab. As long as I stay away from the white noise in diagnostic it works fine.
I only have an issue in BF2 with the positional audio coming from the center speaker but that is whole nother topic.

• Connecting front panel audio(case) to x-fi xtreme mu

Hi,
Im trying to connect the front panel mic and headphone jacks on my antec sonata 2 case to my x-fi xtreme music s card, here is what i have/havent found out:?.after 2 hours of trying ,then 35 seconds of looking here,i tried to stick the mics jack into the wired remote mic jack of my t7900 speakers thinking it would work, can someone pls clarify that input on wired remote is ONLY for mp3 players etc,and not for microphones?2.there appears to be a way of connecting the single pins coming from my front audio panel on case(there is also a 0 pin block ,but that doesent fit,i think it for intel something or other) to the long 0 strip pin thing on the x-fi card,i have see various diagrams on the net etc,but some different, most labelled -0 but i dont know which one is and one is 0 etc....again,if any? one can explain how i could do this pls?3.is it just easier to buy the x-fi 5.25inch front panel jobbie,if the above is not possible?,and if so i have problems sourcing that too anywhere in uk?srry for asking so many questions, but im a bit peeved to have all this gear,go out to buy a headset and mic for playing games, and find out its harder than the krypton factor to set up... many thanks in advance?sc_

Lazy to search? It's been here (and there) 'bout thousand times already so it shouldn't be hard to find...
?....actually no,i thought my post clearly stated that i had seen conflicting posts and diagrams with regards to which was the right way to conenct the headers to the pins, and i was just looking for clarification. I apologise if i wasent clear in enough in this. Anyway, thankyou for taking yor time to respond and i will look into the link you gave me and see if its a good solution. Incidenatlly, another thought occured to me this morning. As i have the t7900 wired remote sat on my desk its entirely possible to run a?3.5mm male/female jack extension from the mic input of my x-fi card and place it next to my wired remote, having the mic jack of headset in this extension, and the headphones jack in the wired remote input.....is this a viable solution, and would this not compromise quality?again ty for your time. sc_

• Help, should I get xtreme audio or xtreme music?

I want to get a sound card for my PC. Currently I am using an in built Realtek sound card. I need the sound card for the purposes of recording vocal performances using karaoke backing tracks connecting a karaoke player to a mixer (connected to a studio condenser mic) which is connected to the line in input of the PC. I also need it to record vocal and acoustic guitar performances (guitar connected to the Behringer 202FX mixer). I don't know which sounblaster sound card is suitable for my need. At the moment my eyes are on xtreme music and xtreme audio but I don't know the difference. I know xtreme music has the audio creation feature (as well as the entertainment and gaming features) but I don't know if xtreme audio also has this audio creation feature. Does xtreme audio has a Graphical Interface Unit (GUI) which has an audio creation settings like in this Youtube video tutorial?

Can anyone give me any advise as to which one is the one that works for what I want to do?

None. Stay away from creative as if have win7 you are burned. The cards will give you great problems as they do not have proper drivers. Most possibly you won't hear anything from your speakers.

• Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (PCI-Expre

Hi folks,?Purchased a from Overclockers.co.uk, its an OEM card, but unlike most other OEM equipment I have, for the life of me I cannot find any drivers for it, at present I am using it under Vista 32bit, and Vista 64bit, both are using very poor Windows Update drivers which have crippled the optical output to 2 channel only
I can see me sending this card back to Overclockers.co.uk if I can't get drivers for it ?Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can find drivers for this card, or equivalents to it. Cheers, Vaughn.

I miss the old days of eax where it was like wall hack i would know the exact position where my opponent is standing! It was fun with you Creative from DOS gaming days with hardware 3d-midi and hardware mp3 decoding on win95,eax 1 on Quake 2 etc. Hope you survive!

As far as i know. only BF2 and then Prey support EAX5. Doom 3 supported EAX 4 and had the best quality and proper positional audio. Later everything is dead. Some game supported OpenAl which used hardware decoding but didn't make use of any extenstion such as reverb or eax's.Later it became a trend that users had to force hardware audio via configs eg:Batman:Arkham Asylam,Gears of War and Bioshock 2(all 3 unreal engine games). Now forcing hardware audio on Unreal engine 3 is completely disabled i.e we can turn on but game won't have sound yet the config still has the functions to enable and disable and to select the no.of hardware voices. I played Condemed:Criminal Origin's yesterday it was so scary with EAX 2.0 itself at the same time Dead Space 2 which uses software audio and surround is not even remotely close to the experience.
I really miss EAX and hardware decoding which has major benifits. I don't know what is Creative interesed in now :/
Bioshock was so good with EAX and Reverb. Every new game is pathetic sound except Rage. i don't know what they did in Rage but it has proper positional software audio and effects also seem to be very good with proper reverb effect and echo's depending on room size. In Rage console i saw some pxaudio which i think is using xaudio2 which supports many hardware techs. So i think here on its software and no need to purchase a sound card. Realtek and C-media has won thanks to Microsoft.

• Halo 2 - No Positional Sound (Headphon

I have a XTreme Gamer Fatalty Pro card and have a (great) pair of headphones. Since i thought the new games will have better positional audio without needing EAX in Vista, i just got my hands on Halo 2. Played it in Entertainment mode and well the game worked. No positional sound. Then i switched the card to Game mode, enabled 3D cmss and started the game again. And you know what, there was heavy stuttering in the sound, game kept pausing every few seconds. I understand that cmss 3d isnt supported under vista. I?disabled it and just ran it in game mode, Fps were improved a lot, sound quality was better, and well the sound was positional for like 2 speaker system, no 3D audio. Also, EAX effects werent working, some work, like stepping on different surfaces, but the rest didnt, like when i was in the open, all sounds were muffled, maybe because i had headphones. So naturaly, my question would be,?.) Will smss 3D ever come back for vista?2.) Will EAX effects work in vista?3.) Should i return my sound card and wait for a better one by creative?4.) Do i need to return my sound card before creative launches another one and my pricey soundcard is all but worth pennies?5.) Can someone check if they get positional audio with 7. or so because under halo 2 options i can only see headphones and all the way up to 5..6.) Should i ditch my headphones and buy speakers (speakers, not so great on music, loud on my housemates, and another pricey decision)?

• Creative Gaming Audio & the EAX2 R

Partially as a response to this thread about "Onboard sound versus X-Fi review/shootout?"...?http://forums.creative.com/creativel...message.id=430?... this post further expands the subject of on-board sound on to gaming & continues deeper into the needs/wants of a "gameaudiophile".
[color="#ff6600">- GG's!?Even though the link below points to an old article / review from 2005 03 07, it might give people here some guidance in finding their temporary way back to the still not so old HDA on-board sound until Creative's driver technologies see a brighter day. Intel High Definition Audio Aricle on the C-Media CMI-9880 & Realtek AL C880
http://www.behardware.com/articles/5...ition-dio.html?-------------------------------------------------------------- - Now I'm a pretty frequent gamer who have come to rely heavily on Creatives post EAX2 systems in regards to great positonal audio, doppler effects etc. As we all know, EAX on the higher notes is TBA & ETA unknown for the time being. This gives us time to fool around with eventual on-board stuff. So I did & let me tell you that the Sensaura 3DPA, which is implemented on the CMI-9880 (on my ASUS P5AD2 Premium MOBO) does not come close to a love affair. Setups for up to 7.CH is at your disposal, virtual modes as well. 6 Ds3D voices , EAX-2 & Jack Sensing... It's all working as in runnig but just doesn't reach any particular high.
[color="#ff6600">Gaming Audio & the EAX2 Roof? Some of you might wonder what my nit-picking about EAX is about. You might not be a gamer. The regular mp3-cowboy regards EAX to be merely a bug. You simply have to hear it in a game, preferably an online-shooter where picking up enemy footsteps & sounds etc are the difference between knowing where to turn your sights or getting it in the back. It's about anticipation as well as immersion. The EAX3+ modes make a huge difference in those regards. For many gamers, the importance of audio quality & positioning might not be clear when first starting out with a game. But as they grow into it, get accustomed with their surroundings, they start to notice & realize how important audio really is. Many of my friends who I have lured into gaming over the years have often been astonished by the difference between on-board audio solutions & the Creative addon cards. Then amazed about what miracles a good headphone setup can do. The real jaw-droppers were the higer EAX modes. EAX became their "eyes on their back". To put it bluntly: Gamers are a new but different breed of audiophiles. We are not content with movie-style directional audio alone, we also demand depth, distance, elevational sound possibilities. True 3D audio. EAX has been the best answer so far as to keep us somewhat happy. No EAX, no satisfaction. Part of the problem is that we have always been trusting Creative to keep deli'vering, and they probably will. But what if, just if, we would like to step out & try something different for a change. Just to know that some other company might do it just as good for us? Well, the options aren't many & they're limited.

ps.
Anyone running the AuzenTech X-Meridian 7. card for instance? I understand the X-Mer being very high quality as far as everything besides gaming is concerned. Reading a lot of reviews, primary concern would be the "higher than X-Fi" FPS hit - what is your real-world experience outside of the constructed RightMark 3D tests? Audio positioning / doppler? How does the Dolby Headphone, Dolby? Pro Logic IIX, Dolby? Digital Li've, DTS? Interacti've & DTS? Connect technologies hold up against their Creative counterpart EAX3-5, CMSS/CMSS2 etc? IMHO, EAX2 alone is not good enough & does not cut it when it comes to fast FPS-games. Maybe some of you have had first-hand experience with the Razer Barracuda AC- card instead? The reviews tell me a story about "nice first try" for Razer, considering it's their first shot at serious gaming audio. Positional is mentioned to be somewhat over optimistic etc. As I understand it, their "EAX3-and-up-killers" are called Razer Fidelity?, Razer Enhanced Sonic Perception? (ESP) architecture and Razer?s 3D (720?) Positional Gaming Audio Engine?. Any hardcore gamers tried it's?Of course, both the X-Mer & AC- utilize EAX2, but as I mentioned.., that's an obstacle to get around for the companies serious about getting gamers to migrate from Creative. It's simply not enough for some of us The substitute technologies must at least come very close of making up for the lack of EAX3-5. Many reviewers barely touch the gaming audio aspects of the tested card, simply stating that "it's adequate enough" (?!!). Well.., that might not hold true for those of us who expect to invest several more hours on virtual battlegrounds than playing mp3's or mixing etc.Happy hunting!

Danke Cat.., but it's pretty much just a pure love letter to honey EAX, who happens to be sorely missed by my big rig if you manage to take notice? - Not dangerous at all really since Creative will hopefully outperform the competition anyhow in the end, right? I'm counting on it anyway. In general, these OS-shift problems currently stirring up are most likely a passing thing; taking audio & audio technology more into the spotlight than anything else. - Which is a good thing for Creative as well (handled nicely), promise, & so is acknowledging / discussing differences between soundcards.
If you are referring to the reviews as inhibiting some sort of advertisement character then yes, advertisement leaning towards Creative since none of the other products have been able to outperform any of the Creative cards when it comes to the topic of gaming ^^ as of yet. Many also use Creative cards as reference in tests, link to & publish Creative specifications etc. Does not necessarily have to be a one way street. Or do you perhaps mean that it's not ok to namedrop? Or hyperlink? Ahwell.., I should have read the manual I guess.
As marshall_lai also kindly pointed out, there is also a huge business opportunity helping lesser incorporated to implement EAX+ & technologies in a proper manner!
Anyway.., Parental Advisory & brainpower recommended in any reply & Enjoy!

• Audio 5.1 probl

Hello everybody,
I have a problem with Vista and my audigy.
My vista's version is the rtm 32bit bult6000 so the last.
I downloaded the latest version of beta driver for my audigy the 2. but my problem is with the positional 5.audio.
I se in audio consolle and in vista mixer the option of speaker on 5.setting but i only have a stereo audio without the sound of my subwoofer.
In xp to have a good sound i must set my sorrund mixer to redirect the bass and the crossover frequence to the max and the resoult is very good!
But in Vista i don't know how i can fix this problem. My audio is only stereo without bass and so is terrible for playing music and games.
Eax is not supported now but i wont to resolve the problem of positional audio and when eax will became supported i will enjoy this but now help me to fix the 5. problem!
Thaks a lot to all.
Bye bye
Mattia

Same problem here. But welcome to the world of computers. Rarely will there ever be a bug free software or fully compatible software released. Its not practical to ensure every single little tiny issue is to be resolved. But Hopefully enough people with vista complain about the problem to fix this error soon.

• The old Creative Audigy 2 audio conso

Just reformatted, downloaded the Audigy 2 ZS drivers from creative's website, but the audio console it installed is different from the old one I used to have... Before I used to have creative's volume icon in my system tray which would let me test the positional audio, test the hardware, access the equalizer, EAX console, etc... in that graphical menu that looked like this: [url"]http://www.ixbt.com/multimedia/creative/audigy2-zs/eax5.png?Now i only have the default WIndows volume icon in my SYstem tray, and when I go to Start -> Creative -> Audio Console, it brings up a menu like this: [url"]http://www.tomshardware.fr/images/av/20050406/Console_0.gif?No equalizer, no thing to test the positional sound of my speakers, harware tests, and a worse interface. What happened?

xagent,
If you require those graphical software, you need to install them from the installation CD. What you downloaded is only the driver and it doesn't include those software.

• X-FI 3D positional sound through headphones with CMSS

<FONT color=#ff0000 size=4>UPDATE: To Creative employees
<FONT color=#ff0000 size=4>Please respond to this thread and try to sort this issue. Is bad sound from "headphones"+CMSS On due to a limitation of the hardware (is the sound quality degradation compared to "2/2. speakers"+CMSS On due to a much more complex algorithm of 3D positional sound mixing)?
<FONT color=#ff0000 size=4>Is there a way to adjust the speaker angles in Calibration tab of THX Console to more than 60 degrees (I would definitely consider a hexediting hack as a viable solution, whatever works)?
I have this problem with X-FI Fatalty. Maybe someone knows what to do about it... I'm trying to get 3D positional sound to work through regular stereo headphones using CMSS 3D. The way I have it set up is as follows:the win xp Control Panel is set to 5., X-FI audio console is set to "headphones" or "2/2. speakers", and CMSS 3D is enabled at default settings. It does work - the 5. sounds from, say, a game is downmixed to stereo with 3D positional effects mixed in (sounds coming from behind are of a different tone, and actually sound like they come from behind). There are problems however. With "headphones" setting, the sound quality is atrocious - the sound is muddy and boomy. The 3D positional audio effects work great - I can pinpoint every direction from which the sound is coming fairly accurately. Note that without CMSS 3D, the "headphone" setting sounds great. With "2/2. speakers" setting, the sound quality is normal (sounds great on my HD555 headphones), but the 3D positional audio effects are not good - audio control panel in X-FI software allows only a maximum of 20 degrees setting for the angle between the speakers, whereas 80 degrees would be required to simulate 3D effects through headphones (X-FI software has two settings for that actually, (+/-)60 degrees maximum for each speaker, with the reference angle of zero degrees being directly in front of the listener - directly in between the two speakers). So my questions is this. Has anyone figured out how to either improve the quality of the sound with "headphones" setting, or increase the angles of the speakers to (+/-)90 degrees (80 total) with "2/2. speakers" setting?<!-- / message --><!-- sig --><SPAN>

The only possibility that I can think of is that 2/2. mode is NOT as simple as headphone mode with crosstalk cancelation. Perhaps the HRTF only kicks in for sound sources outside of the arc directly in front of the listener. If that were the case, you wouldn't percei've any distortion for sound sources in front of you.
Also, you are wrong regarding DirectSound3D. Keep in mind that Direct3D and DirectSound3D are not the same. The whole point of OpenAL and DirectSound3D is that they present an API to the programmer through which there is NO specification of the number of speakers. When using OpenAL or DirectSound3D, the only thing a programmer can do is specify the location of a mono sound source in 3D space relati've to the listener. The speaker settings for your DirectSound3D or OpenAL device will then determine how this sound is "rendered" by the soundcard. It is not under control of the game. For example, if you have 5. speakers and the 3D position is behind you, the SOUND CARD will make the decision to use the rear speakers. If you use headphones, the SOUND CARD will decide to apply an HRTF to create the illusion of a rear sound source. The point is that the game does not have control over how many speakers you will get sound from.
However, to further complicate the situation, there are SOME games (HL2 is an example) where DirectSound3D is used, BUT the sound output of the game itself IS a function of the Windows speaker settings. This is not how programmers are SUPPOSED to use DirectSound3D. I've written about this countless times. There is a good post on [H]ard|Forum about this. Do an "advanced" search with my username (thomase) looking for the terms "hl2" and "cmss".

• Audio fragment will only start at start of frame.

Hi there,
I am trying to set an audio fragment to start on a fade-out, and NOT at the start of the fragment. It seems I can only position the audio fragment at the start or ending of a video fragment.
I'd like the imported music to start at the middle of my fade out of the previous video fragment.
Can you help me find out how I can do this?
Thanks

Hi Marianne,
I just tested this and it seems to work fine for me - I can position the audio to start at any point in the "fade to black" transition (and in other transitions).
To position audio it's handy to use the Precision Editor. Click on the small gear icon on the transition and select Precision Editor. At the top of the editor, activate the first icon "Show or hide extras" and ideally the second icon "Show or hide audio tracks". Any added audio (voiceovers, soundtracks etc) will appear below the video. You can clearly see where the transition begins and ends (angled shaded areas). Drag the soundtrack to the required position, so that it starts part way through the transition.
If this doesn't work you may need to delete iMovie's preference file. Please post back if you need help with this.

• [iPhone] programmatically converting between audio formats

Hello,
I am trying to use the Audio Unit Framework to convert the audio format of a sound file at a certain point in my app. I am looking at the documentation on audio units and plug-ins but it is very obscure on how to actually carry out the process.
All I want to do is convert from my starting format (IMA4 / ADPCM in this case, but it should work for any playback format I believe...) to the canonical iPhone format (standard linear PCM) and save the result to a temporary file. This is all I've managed to put together:
AudioUnit wavConverter;
AudioUnitInitialize(wavConverter);
Does anyone have any working samples of code that do anything similar, or even utilize the Audio Unit framework at all? I haven't been able to find anything around these forums of people using this framework on the iPhone, so anything remotely related would be useful. Thanks!

I have an app that has looping background music and short sound effects. I used AudioQueue for the background music and AudioServices for the short sounds. Works great. Sound files are CAFF/LEI16 (IMA4 should work too).
I've heard that SoundEngine from CrashLanding is buggy, plus you don't need to use OpenAL unless you want positional audio. So, I would recommend AudioQueue, which I believe can also handle AAC.
You can copy and paste most of the code you need from here:

• [ PROBLEM ] Audio Control app wont recognise card properly

Hi
I have a X-Fi ExtremeGamer card in my Win 7 home premium setup and am struggling to set it up properly.
Long story short , I pulled out the X-Fi card and tried the onboard audio as I was getting an issue with the audio playing around using the creative drivers ( volume changes mid song, positional audio in games was often unusal ).
The Realtek stuff wasnt too bad but I wanted to try my X-Fi card again, it is suppose to be better after all.
Anyways...
I disabled the onboard audio , safe mode and cleaned all the realtek drivers out and any lingering creative drivers with Driver Sweeper, used CCleaner to clean up the reg and rebooted.
Installed the BETA drivers from creative and the audio works fine, but when I try use the crystaliser or other SB features the app complains
" The audio device supported by this application is not detected. The application will exit. "
I installed Daniel_K's drivers from a CD ISO he put out a while back, and the applications worked fine but the audio dropped in and out, so I downloaded the official creative drivers for my card and OS, and the application worked fine again but as with Daniels drivers the audio dropped in and out so I reverted to the beta drivers... and the audio dropped in and out as well.
I worked it out to being the volume controls on the creative 5. speakers , which every set of speakers I have bought from creative have had the same issue, the volume slider on the cable... after some use it messes up the audio and it becomes safer just to adjust the volume in the software.
After deciding the issue was with the volume slider on the cable, I wanted to re-install Daniel_K's driver pack so I could access the other features, now it suddenly doesnt recognise the device anymore, nore does the official none beta drivers from creative, nor does the latest PAX drivers ... all report the same issue:
" The audio device supported by this application is not detected. The application will exit. "?
I am starting to tear my hair out here, the audio works and the card is recognised in the Device Manager as 'Creative SB X-Fi' , I have clean the drivers , the registery , used the patch that fixes a bug where the update wouldnt recognise cards properly , re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re installed the drivers.... carefully EACH time.
I triple checked I was downloading the Win 7 64bit OS ver of the X-Fi ExtremeGamer drivers.
What now ?
ALSO Who thought it was a bright idea to put up the volume to 87% when you install drivers ? It also unmutes the volume if you mute it before restart, and it puts the volume back up to 87% if you dare to lower the volume before rebooting the PC to complete the install.
( NOTE: It only does this after the initial reboot to complete the install, subsequent re-boots leaves the volume alone )

I give up...
I sent a form to the tech guys , detailing the problem and outlining the steps I took to fix the issue...and they direct me to http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowA...aspx?sid=55438?, oh I can use Device Manager to uninstall , oh and Control Panel - Programs to unistall the Creative stuff ( note: I am being very sarcastic here ).
This is the information I sent the tech:
Detailed Problem Description:
Creative audio application does not recognise SB X-Fi card , card audio functions just cant control the feature set. Error msg : " The audio device supported by this application is not detected. The application will exit. " Suspect nVidia installing of HD audio drivers causing 4 (four) additional High Definition Audio Devices to appear in the device manager screen. Unable to uninstall these devices as Win7 auto re-reinstalls with generic MS drivers, can only disable. Creative SB X-Fi card listed in audio devices as 2 - SB X-Fi. Suspect the audio control application looks in the first slot and doesnt recognise the device and fails, doesnt look at the 2 ( second slot ? ) Tried a full uninstall including going to safe mode and removing drivers with Driver Sweeper, CCLeaner to clear out registry entries and removed the card, booted to windows without the card , re-seated the card and re-installed the drivers. Thank you
and this is the advice I got ...
Thank you for contacting Creative Labs.
To avoid installing the incorrect driver on your soundcard, we suggest that you do a full uninstallation using the guidelines, steps provided in our website. Shutdown your PC then take out the card and make sure to place it on another slot. Second, disable your onboard audio and if your graphic card comes with any audio support as well, disable this feature.
