Positive experience using ARD 3 across the Internet

I just wanted to briefly share my ARD experience. I successfully am able to control/maintain my parents Macbook from my Mac Pro across the Internet. I have a 5M/512K down/up cable connection (MA Charter Cable), and they a 6M/384K DSL connection (FL Bellsouth). I setup port forwarding for 3283 and 5900 on both my Netgear router and their DSL router. If I use the greyscale color setting, the screen control is very reasonable. I can even go to 2-bit black/white if I need to. Going to color does make almost unbearable, but greyscale is really fine. Also, I love the ability to send UNIX commands, copy files, pull reports, all in background without disturbing them (aka, wrote an AppleScript to make sure iPhoto opens then hides every day so they pull down the latest pics from my Photocast). This is the real value-add for me over plain VNC.
Plus, I can control my Mac mini in the living room of my own house as well.
Anyway, just wanted to post some positive experience with ARD over the Internet, given lots of folks having difficulty with it.

Ah, so this is not a Question at all. Next time please set the option to correctly reflect if you are make a question or not.

  • Can I control a network of Macs across the internet with ARD?

    Hi,
Can I control a network of Macs across the internet with ARD?
I seem to only be able to control one mac at a time. Am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Matt

To be able to connect to a workstation from outside it's network, the ports that ARD uses must be open on both ends of the connection. ARD uses ports 3283 and 5900 so those must be open.
If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop: How to specify a port number for a VNC client
    to connect.
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD administrator on a workstation on the network, and then take control of that system from outside, either via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a virtual private network (VPN) so that when you connect from outside, your admin system is officially part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.

  • How would you configure ports and IPs for FMS 4.5 to allow RTMFP streaming across the Internet?

Basically I've got an AS3 app set up that allows video chats between n number of parties, using RTMFP.  The problem is that when I tried to connect a computer from across the Internet, as opposed to our intranet, suddenly it couldn't connect at all to RTMFP for that app (though it was able to succeed in using an RTMP fallback that was in there).
So after hunting around, I got the network administrator to supposedly open up 1935-1960 UDP for outbound traffic on the external IP for the FMS's server (same server as the AS3 app), and he apparently opened them up for inbound traffic as well.  I also went into Adaptor.xml and changed this element:
    <HostPort>:19350-19360</HostPort>
    to say this:
    <HostPort public="XX.XX.XXX.XXX:19350-19360">:19350-19360</HostPort>
where XX.XX.XXX.XXX is the external IP for that computer.  At this point in time though, even though computers across the Internet are able to connect through RTMFP, the video/audio streams aren't getting through at all across the Internet.  What's more is that even on our intranet, there are one-way versions of that problem now.
Network administration is not my strong suit, in all honesty.  Where would I need to start looking in order to solve this problem?  Thanks!

Found the answer to the problem.  It was something fairly specific to our internal network.  For anyone else who runs into something like this, use cc.rtmfp.net on each client computer and refer to stuff described at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flashmediaserver/configadmin/WSdb9a8c2ed4c02d261d76cb3412a40a4 90be-8000.html#WSec225f632fa008755a148c52131fca3d386-7ffe, especially under "Understanding the RTMFP Connectivity test".

  • Hi , i think i will have a look an te AVI tools, what i am most interested in is looking at sending voice across the internet in real time.

Hi Kyle, what i am looking at is sending voice in real time across the internet using labView functions i dont want to bring in another application and make things more complicated.

I am not sure exactly what you are asking. If you have a previous post which Kyle answered I would suggest just posting back to it.
However if you want to send data across TCP in LabVIEW there are some TCP VIs that are quite easy to use. You open a connection, write and read from that connection, and then close it. However data send over TCP using the TCP VIs is sent as a string, not as "voice" however I am not sure what data type you are currently using.

Hi when i switch on the macc 41 files open at once can not open any files while this is happing can still use AI & PS and the internet any help thanks...

Are you wanting to stop the 41 files from opening at once or is this intentional? At what point do they open when you power on the mac or when you boot Illustrator? What OS version are you using?
If you can  answer the questions above can provide better advice, but you may be running into something similar:

  • I am looking to purchase an Apple G4/500 to submit graphics etc. across the internet for an independent newspaper. Will this tower work for this purpose ?

I am looking to purchase an Apple G4/500 to submit graphics etc. across the internet for an independent newspaper. Will this tower suit my needs to start ?

Thank you for helping me consider all of this. I am a novice at this newspaper project so I am unsure of what all I need to consider. I will find out and go from there. I do not have a lot of revenue to start with so when I found a deal, I thought it may be a consideration to start with.

  • Screen sharing using VNC across the Internet

I have my computer set up with no-ip.Com and I can ping the machine at the hostname. I turned on screen sharing in the control panel with the settings: I'll allow access for all users, computers settings: anyone can request to control the computer checked, and VPN users can connect with a password. I also went to my Apple Airport utility and added the Apple remote desktop service in the port mapping, which opens port 5900, the screen sharing port.
When I try to connect to the host name using the screen sharing client, it attempts to connect, but fails after five seconds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

to see if port 5900 is open use your terminal with the following command (this test should be done from outside your network)
    nc your-no-ip-serveraddress 5900
I would also recommend a much more secure way to do this.
Turn on remote login. then open tcp port 22 from your router to your mac.
Then use the terminal from your remote mac
    ssh -L 5901:localhost:5900 your-no-ip-serveraddress
once the tunnel is established in the screensharing app use a host address of localhost:5901

  • Using AX and sharing the internet?

For a while I've had an Airport Express (AX) across the room from my mini, with my printer and stereo hooked up to it (called "My Network"). I recently got a Powerbook, and set up a network (called "My Mac Mini") with internet sharing on, and was able to use it to surf online, etc. Then I went to print something from my mini and realized that I had two different networks, which I didn't intentionally do, but both of them took a lot of work to get working right. With the "Mac mini" network, I couldn't print and had to switch to "My network" to get the AX connected and thus shut out my Powerbook.
Can I combine them? Is it possible to have my mini networked with my AX and at the same time sharing it's internet connection with other wireless devices? Or do I have to get a router, hook it up to my AX and expand my network? I can't really tell when I should be changing network preferences and when I should be changing sharing options, etc. (new to the Mac world).
    Thanks for all the help!

Pardon me for jumping in. I am sure that Tesserax will respond with more detail.
+could the AX be that router?+
The AX could be that router, but it will only provide an internet connection via wireless. You won't be able to connect an ethernet device to the Express as you could do if you had a wireless router that also provided 3-4 ethernet ports.
If the mini connects well using wireless, then your AX will do the job fine. As long as the AX and mini are in close proximity, you should have a good connection using wireless. But, it won't be as "fast" as an ethernet connection. It's also possible that you may notice no real difference.
I think the bottom line here is (as it is in most networks), you won't really know until you try.

  • Can ARD work over the internet?

I have used ARD over my local network, but would like to use it over the internet ( i.e. off site).
Is there any way this can be achieved?
    Joe

    Joe
    You're welcome.
AFAIK there is nothing 'definitive' that could be defined as a step-by-step guide. Simply too many variables. Not everyone uses the same hardware for example.
Some of the instructions given already should help you configure the firewall/router at the remote site? How you negotiate and configure the firewall depends on what's being used. They all vary. Assuming you're at the remote site enable Remote Management. System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management. Tick all the options.
At this point a sensible precaution would be beefing up the local admin account's password. It's your choice.
Assign the workstation the fixed private IP address you decided on when configuring the Firewall. For example if the remote site's local network is using addresses in the 192.168.x.x range then assign an IP address that seems suitable to you. You can do this in the Network Preferences Pane. To make it easier you could use the "Using DHCP with manual address" option.
The only other piece of information you need is the external IP address at the remote site. If it's a fixed IP you should have no problems. If it's dynamically assigned a phone call (assuming someone's there) to the remote site is all you need do prior to controlling the workstation.
To find out what external IP address is being used launch a browser and in the url key in:
    http://www.myipaddress.com
At your end select Connect to server from the Go Menu and key in:
    vnc://theipaddressoftheremotesite
At the prompt enter an admin account name and password and you should be looking at the remote workstations' desktop.

  • I use Firefox to access the internet-but when I go off the internet but don't shut down, then go back on Firefox it won't open because "it is already running". Task Manager doesn't show that it is operating so I can't shut it off. What to do?

It is in the question but to repeat.
    1. When I go online I use Mozilla Firefox
    2. While I am doing other work, I usually close the internet.
    3. If I go back on the internet and click on Mozilla it won't come up, stating that "it is already running".
    4. Despite that, when I open Task Manager, it doesn't show that it is running so I can't shut it down or open it.
    5. If I log off or shut off the computer, then after I log in or reboot the computer, I can open Mozilla.
    Thanks from a Mozilla fan.

  • I have a new mini ipad and need to install Adobe Flash Player on it in order to use certain items on the internet.  Can Adobe Flash Player be installed an used on my ipad??

I have my first ipad.  It is the mini version.  I'm trying to go to certain sites on the internet that tell me I need to update or install Adobe Flash Player. When I try to down load Adobe Flash Player I get a message saying "this device does not support Adobe Flash Player".   Can I not use Adobe Flash Player on my ipad like I do on my computers and my iphone???

You can't install flash player on your iPad, nor on your iPhone - it's not supported on iOS devices, and as Adobe have stopped development on all mobile versions of it, it probably never will be.
Browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites. Also some websites have their own apps in the App Store.

  • File share with my friends computer across the internet.

    Hello,
so my friend recently got a mac (changed from windows)
and i was wondering can i set up file sharing with him?
I have created an "Online HD" in my sharing folder, so how can he access it?
    thanks
    Aries

Yes, it is possible. To add to what others have said here, if you are connected to the internet via a router that implements NAT (network address translation), you have to configure the router to do "port forwarding", which means that connections that come into it on a certain port (AppleShare uses port 548) should be forwarded to your computer on the LAN (local network). The person on the connecting end supplies the IP address or host name for the router (not your Mac) to connect.
Caveats are, your ISP may change your IP address at will so you have to beware of that. They usually don't change very often. More importantly, though, you should keep in mind that it is a big bad world out there, and every listening port that you enable is a potential avenue for the bad guys to get in. AppleShare is pretty secure, but if you do set this up then I recommend you enable it when necessary. Disable File Sharing, or better yet, disable the NAT port forwarding for 548, when you aren't using it.
Another caveat is that your ISP may not allow setting up a server on some ports, or at all. If they block port 548 you can use a different one. If they block all ports then you're out of luck.

  • Until your recent change, I used Firefox to search the internet. Nows I get a message that says "File not found." I DO NOT want to use google, but that SEEMS to be my only choice. WTF? Tell me how to get back to my Firefox search.

I DO NOT want to use Google for anything on my computer. I do not want to search or browse using google.
After the change Firefox made about a month ago, I can't get my search line browser, whatever the hell it is at the top of my computer screen, to give me anything. The only way I can search the internet is using google. I DO NOT want to use google for anything on my computer.
    Need more info?

if Firefox is now searchingbrowsing through Google, I will quit Firefox and find something else. I do not want anything from Google operating on my computer.
