Positive experiences upgrading to (Sandforce) SSD?

I plan on upgrading my Macbook 5.1 (mid-2009 Core 2 Duo 2.13 with 2GB of RAM) with some extra RAM and an SSD. One of the drives I'm looking at is the 180GB Intel 330. However, after googling the drive it seems like everyone is experiencing sudden freezes (the dreaded beach ball of death). At first I thought that this problem was related to Sandforce-based drives only, but after doing some more reading it looks like drives based on other controllers (Samsung, Crucial) are experiencing the same problems.
I realise that user experiences published on forums tend to be rather negative in stead of positive. So I guess that that's why I'm starting this thread to find out if there are users out there with a similar setup that can reduce my hesitancy to upgrade by sharing their experiences.
Anyone?

Visit OWC for SSDs. If they sell them, then they work in Macs.
I have used a mix of OWC branded SSDs and OCZ Vertex 3 models in several Macs without any problems.

  • My experience upgrading to SL

Let me share my experience upgrading to LEO
    Before installing :
    - I run Time Machine to backup all
    - I read some posts, and also compatibility list (www.snowleopard.wikidot.com)
(It seems that there is a lot of posts about HP products)
    - I upgraded my apps to last versions availables, through Apple update (System, iApps), I even upgraded my 10.5.6 to 10.5.8
    - I did a cleaning with Onyx (repair permissions, etc,...)
    - At install : Option Rosetta on
    After update to Leo
    - I was forced to re-install my Epson C86 driver (through Apple prefs : easy)
    - Aperçu was not able to drive my Canon scanner (1240U : 10 years old...)
But the Canon soft runs OK (Canoscan Toolbox)
    - VERY Annoying for me : my PowerMate (Griffin Techs) doesn't run anymore, and there's no update..
    About softwares :
    - iApps and Finder : perfect (iMovie HD6 : crashed at 1st launch, but never after...). Are really faster, specially Mail : retrieves mails instantly,
    - all OK : Office 2004, Photoshop CS, Filemaker 8.5, VLC (for MKV codecs), even old apps, are OK
    - QTX don't run MKV files (but VLC does)
    - Crash : aMSN only (so I will use MSN or Mercury)
    - Parallels 4 runing XP : REAAAALLY FAAASTER, it's amazing !!!
    - Boot Camp runing XP : SAME : the Mac is still the best PC !!!!
    - Virtualbox runing XP : (yes I have 3 boot WinXP partitions, don't blame on me :)) : runs slower, and even really slower. but I'm not on the last version (2.0.6)
    - Gimp under X11 : 1st launch : VEEEEERY SLOW (I Thought it was freezed !)
but after : launch speed is OK and even fast !!!
    - an advise : don't launch Cocktail : Crashs are reported on some posts
My conclusion is very positive : very smooth update. No big issues.

Yes, was a good news, but my old 1240U is not recognized by Preview.
Preview is supposed to drive a lot of scans directly, including Canon lide series.
    But anyway, Canoscan runs, so...

  • Any *positive* experiences with iOS 8 on iPad 2?

    Two related questions:
    1. I'm trying to decide whether or not to install iOS 8 on my iPad 2. I've read quite a few posts explaining negative experiences. But has anyone had a positive experience? No challenges with the upgrade? Few to no problems with apps?
    2. I am on my third iPad 2 due to hardware issues. My most-recent iPad 2 is only one month old. Will this make any difference whatsoever as to how it will respond to the upgrade? Or is it just a case of the iPad 2 being out of date hardware-wise? Not up to the task?

I still haven't upgraded from 7.0. However, last night I must not have been thinking properly, and I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I'm worried that my iPad and Mac will stop talking. So far, so good, but how long will they continue to support iCloud? (I didn't switch to iCloud Drive because iPad still on 7.0.)
With the 8.1 upgrade, did you note any improvements? Any problems?

  • Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
    I thought about RAM:

    Check this out:

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.

  • How do I upgrade (via Apple) SSD (to 500 GB or 1 TB) on Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch, Late 2012

How do I upgrade (via Apple) SSD (to 500 GB or 1 TB) on Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch, Late 2012.
I want to know how much Apple will charge for this (if they even do this since I don't see it on their website).

Apple does not upgrade parts of a machine - they'll have it repaired under warranty, but no upgrades. You can, however, take it to an authorized service provider; no idea how much they would charge.
You can also do this yourself - here is an installation video:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_retinadisplay_late12_unibo dy_ssd/
I bought one of their SSDs and installed it in my 2012 MBP (not retina) - very easy to do. If you want to go this way, post back for instructions on how to clone your current drive which will make things super easy.

  • What has been your experience upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6.0 to 10.7 or 10.8?  I read real horror stories about Maverick.

What has been your experience upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6.8 ti 10.7 or 10.8?

my story was indeed a horror story
Mavericks is not an upgrade of previous OSes, but rather a port of iOS
If you want your computer to function like an iPad, go for it.
Snow Leopard on the other hand is a full-featured and stable OS - the best of them in my opinion.
Mavericks makes it easier to port Pages and Numbers documents back and forth between your computer and your iPad - but this portability comes at the price of many, many lost features in both programs.  Over 100 lost features in Pages.  Don't know how many for Numbers, but because of lost functionality you risk losing data (if you used Footers and Headers, Page View, etc.).
It is possible to use the older version of iWork under Mavericks, but it is a real pain as Mavericks keeps trying to default you to the newer versions.  Even accidentally opening with the newer version and not saving changes can cause the file identifier to be altered making it no longer open under the older version (I did find a way to force open)  Deleting the newer versions from your system results in Mavericks nagging you on a daily basis to reinstall them.  There is no option to say No, only the option to postpone for one day.
the OS itself is much less customizable, I found it much harder to use with older eyesight because I couldn't highlight my scroll bars, or change the colour of certain files in a list, etc.  Anywhere I went to Preferences I was struck by how few of them there were - less than half as many as Snow Leopard, in some cases less than 25%.  Again, I had used those missing Preferences.
Mavericks also takes away many of the abilities of iTunes to sync with your iPad or iPhone and forces you to use iCloud to do much of the synching.  If you don't want to use iCloud, or if you have confidentiality issues that prevent you from using it - you are out of luck.
In the end I found Mavericks unusable.  The process of reverting back to Snow Leopard required 5 hours with 2 different geniuses at the Apple Store, 2 deep wipes of my computer and fresh install of Snow Leopard.    And some loss of settings and data.
If you choose to go for it, then make a bootable backup first.  Some sources suggest making 2 backups.
There are people who are happy with Mavericks, but I am not one of them.
Since I had my misadventure they have made some improvements to Mavericks, but not nearly enough of them to tempt me back.  For example, you cannot set your old Pages and Numbers documents to 'always open' with the older version of the software ... or rather you can set them to, but Mavericks will immediately revert it back to the new version.

  • Positive experience using ARD 3 across the Internet

I just wanted to briefly share my ARD experience. I successfully am able to control/maintain my parents Macbook from my Mac Pro across the Internet. I have a 5M/512K down/up cable connection (MA Charter Cable), and they a 6M/384K DSL connection (FL Bellsouth). I setup port forwarding for 3283 and 5900 on both my Netgear router and their DSL router. If I use the greyscale color setting, the screen control is very reasonable. I can even go to 2-bit black/white if I need to. Going to color does make almost unbearable, but greyscale is really fine. Also, I love the ability to send UNIX commands, copy files, pull reports, all in background without disturbing them (aka, wrote an AppleScript to make sure iPhoto opens then hides every day so they pull down the latest pics from my Photocast). This is the real value-add for me over plain VNC.
Plus, I can control my Mac mini in the living room of my own house as well.
Anyway, just wanted to post some positive experience with ARD over the Internet, given lots of folks having difficulty with it.

  • TS3899 1st apple purchase (5c), not a positive experience. Email set up, counter shows 128 emails. Actually have 2. Counter will increase but never goes below 128. What gives?

1st apple purchase ... iphone 5c. So far not a positive experience with anything apple. My email is set up but the numbering starts at 128. If more are downloaded the counter will go up but when things get deleted the counter stays at 128. I actually have 2 emails right now and my phone says 130. What is the deal? How do I fix?

    Samsunng evo 840
    Crucial MX100
i am guessing both will be compatible with my laptop but the main problem is ram and it's frequency i can't seems to find a way.
    Please help.

    Hi,
Your machine currently has 4Gb of RAM:
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03325481
It supports 8Gb max. CPU-Z (SPD tab) should show you RAM information including brand. You can work out what do you need using that information. My suggestion: use information on the SPD tab INCLUDING brand.
    Regards.

I killed a load process on Unix and got the error A write to file [data/essbase/app/PPU_FK/Ppu_Fk/ess00001.pag], from address [0x403bf4a8] with handle [19] to offset [1130184704] for [16384] bytes, failed with error [1130614] and system error [nnnnnnnnn] after [27] bytes.I tried to save something and issued the command validate in ESSCMD.Did you make any positive experiences with it? Does repair anything? Does it take long?Regards, Alexandru Draghici

The VALIDATE command does not repair any damage or corruption that may have happened in your database - it is a way to perform an integrity check as part of your load/build process. The length of time it takes will depend on the size of your database.Regards,Jade-------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • Macbook air13  128GB can upgrade to 256GB ssd.

Now i using Macbook air 13 128GB to small so i wan to upgrade to 256GB ssd?

The SSD is replaceable, and OWC sells SSDs for the MacBook Air, but note that if your MacBook Air is in warranty it will be voided. If your Mac is in warranty, I recommend you to buy an external disk, which is cheaper and safer
