Positive Impression of 'Focus on  AP' by corey hilz

After reading just the first 15 or so pages, I am really excited. There aren't many books out there dealing Aperture. I have one other, and didn't want to waste money on another that might be at too elemental of a level. I couldn't tell if Hilz was addressing beginners, or could aid somebody like me with 6 months of use.
It seems that Hilz is  a professional photographer. But his writing skils are, frankly, very endearing. And I am a retired writer. Every concept is short, to the point and charming. The book makes you want to dive into the Aperture Program.
And it is funny the way Hilz seemingly begins his discourse on any Aperture function at a fundamental level, and then pops in yellow Post It notes offering advanced tips. I can just flip through the pages, spot a yellow note, and I am well on my way to being a more savvy Aperture user. It feels almost like a multi media presentation the way he layers his instruction.

I think you meant to post this on the Aperture forum?

  • Opinions about book -- Focus on Apertue by Corey Hilz

Has anyone read it? I have the Apple Pro Series book on Aperture and don't like it much.

I would use Corey's book and add to that Mastering Apple Aperture by Thomas Fitzgerald
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/1849693560
I think those two will answer most of your questions and add some advanced techniques.

After some frustration with Firefox, I decided to try Safari for the first time. I'm a PC user because I like to tinker (in fact, am a professional tinkerer), and demand a computer conforms to me rather than the other way around. Consequently, a Mac for me makes too many assumptions about the way one should do things that makes it generally a far too frustrating experience for me. While the Mac may have a hidden complexity that can be tweaked, hiding the details is often not a good thing for a power user like me.
On the other hand, in a WEB BROWSER, basic simple assumptions is pretty much what I want in it-- and the other Windows based browser developers just can't keep from developing it past the sweet spot till it becomes a Frankenstein that makes life a living he11. So far, Safari looks pretty good-- and would seem to be a good idea, to start getting some Mac-look into the PC to perhaps get new customers to be familiar with it. As long as Apple keeps the more Google like attitude of "less is more" in the product it could do pretty well in the Windows environment. I realize it's brand new and is missing some features and has a few kinks, but at least at the moment I'm willing to give it a chance...

Dont bother with the BBB. Most of the complaints that I've issued about companies I had issues with fell on deaf ears via the BBB. I was even talking to the guy who owns a local restraunt (I didnt have any complaints against him, we were just {word filter avoidance}one evening) and he was telling me that most of the local business owners couldnt give a rats {word filter avoidance}about what the BBB said or did.
If you really want to get at DTV (or any "entertainment" company) call the FCC or issue a complaint with the District Atterneys office. That will get their attention. I did that with one of Verizons Competitors {please keep it relevant}and I got a response and the problem was resolved so fast that it made my head spin. Just my 2 cents worth.
The BBB is a waist of time, but if you look, Verizon has fewer complaints then the competitors. I just can't see what is the problem. Is this thread going anywhere, and how does it relate to Verizon? Seems like it should be in a directv forum. Like I said if you read the fine print and looked into the agreement with directv, you probably would have never gone down that road. I know I didn't, and waited for Verizon to get TV service to upgrade. With a cable company you can complain to the public service commission for your state or the local franchise office for cable, but with DTV you would need to go with the FCC. One of the benefits with DTV is no state or local franchise taxes. But who do you go to, the FCC? If the fine print stated the terms, than your in a jamb. Send the box back pay the termination fees and or bite the bullet.

  • How to change focus within JTextPane

    Hi
I have a JTextPane within a JScrollBar. I have a requirement to change the focus to particular line in the JTextPane on the click of a button. i.e. The JTextPane has to scroll down to that location on clicking the button. Do we have any built in APIs for this functionality ? Or how can we accomplish this ?

play with modelToview and viewToModel methods to go where you want to go.
Then you can set the caret position and request focus.

  • Client focus awesome wm

i have the bad habit of using keyboard to navigate among awesome clients and forgetting that the mouse in an inconvenient position (ie conferring focus to the client that it is positioned over rather than the one which i have chosen with mod4+j/k).  i have perused the rc.lua file briefly but im not that familliar with the object model of awesome (at least the way its defined there) so im reluctant to hack away if someone else has a cut and paste solution.  awesome is awesome, but its an acquired taste.
    TIA

that worked, thanks anrxc.  however it would be convenient to be able to toggle soft focus as the need arises.  i tried to edit the rc.lua file to incorporate this functionality but it seems the soft focus is still disabled (like i want it to be 99% of the time) when i try to enable it with "modkey+Shift s"
global variable to tell awesome whether the follow the mouse:
    makesloppy = 1
added global keybinding for toggling makesloppy
    -- Toggle Sloppy focus
    awful.key({ modkey, "Shift" }, "s",
    function ()
    if makesloppy then
    makesloppy = 0
    else
    makesloppy = 1
    end
    end)
in the hooks section which you pointed out earlier, added a conditional to the focus statement
    awful.hooks.mouse_enter.register(function (c)
-- Sloppy focus, but disabled for magnifier layout
    if awful.layout.get(c.screen) ~= awful.layout.suit.magnifier
    and awful.client.focus.filter(c)
    and makesloppy then
    client.focus = c
    end
    end)
my stupid mistake is going to pop right out at you!

  • IPod not recognized by Windows / iTunes

    Hello,
I hope someone here can help. So far my first experience with Apple support has NOT been a positive impression.
I searched for info on this problem, but the other ones I see all seem to be related to freezing or battery issues.
iPod Classic 120GB, I don't sync very often, and just finished doing a bunch of cleanup in iTunes (album artwork, song info, etc.) and want to re-sync the pod.
When I connect to the PC with the USB cable, Windows doesn't seem to recognize the device, and it doesn't show up in iTunes.
It is charging through USB, however. The battery is fully charged.
I tried 3 different USB ports on the PC.
    Tried restarting iTunes.
    Tried restarting the computer.
Went to Apple support website, tried the troubleshooting assistant:
    Reset the pod.
*Had already tried different USB ports.
*Had already trired restarting the PC (Although it mentions checking for the latest software updates - I didn't do this. WHAT software updates should I look for? Device drivers? OS updates? WHAT???)
    Re-installed iTunes. (Was already at v 9.2.1.4)
*Did not try the restore. Reading the instructions, it appears that the iPod has to be connected to do this, and that's the problem -won't connect!
Also read something about disk mode. I set the iPod to disk mode, but it's not recognized that way, either. When connected by USB in this mode, the iPod screen still says "OK to disconnect".
I tried the link "iPhone, iPad, or iPod is not recognized by Windows".
I do not see the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" anywhere in Device Manager. I suppose this is the problem.
However, continuing with the instructions, it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC?????
(These instructions also say to disconnect the device, but nowhere says when to connect it. Why do they put half-baked troubleshooting instructions on their web site???)
Is there anyone from Apple support on this list who can help? I believe the driver needs to be reinstalled somehow, but it didn'thappen when i re-installed iTunes, so how do I do this?
    Thanks
    Keith

    Hello
I have been having nearly the same problem as Crashcup for the past month. Differences being I am operating with Windows Vista and my iPod is a 160GB Classic. I have gone through all the steps in the troubleshooting documents to no result. I attach my iPod and it is not recognized by Windows, iTunes or even in Device Manager. Not even as an "Unknown Device".
I know there is nothing wrong with the USB ports as two different external hard drives and a video game controller work perfectly fine through them. Same goes with the iPod itself; it continues to play and function normally, and is recognized by a charging device completely separate from my laptop. Just when attached to the computer there is no sign of it.
I am very frustrated that there is no further instruction with regard to what to do with an iPod Classic (as referred to by Crashcup: "...it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC????)
Any help would be much appreciated.l=

  • Java.awt.IllegalComponentStateException in JTable

    Hi folks,
I am trying to write a JTable cell validation. Input data in a cell, if failure, prompt message and set focus & editing back to the cell. I've tried InputVerifier() but it doesn't work since I can easily use the mouse click to shift to other cells in the same table.
What I am trying to do now is to define my DefaultCellEditor. I record the row & index position when getting focus. In the lost focus event, do the validation and set the focus & editing back if failure. Seems it works fine. However, when I randomly click different cells in the table quickly. It prompts:
"java.awt.IllegalComponentStateException: component must be showing on the screen to determine its location"

Your use in a JTable isn't too clear to me, but I feel you're overthinking the basic requirement:
I have an extended JComboBox which is meant to display its information only. Thus it
    - does not allow any selection
    - shows the first item of the list in the TextField only and not once more in the listI don't see the need for duplicating the model and using a popup menu listener.

  • Prepping for Aperture 3. What do I do with iPhoto Library?

OK, gang, I’m getting ready for Aperture 3 and could use some friendly advice so that I don’t run off the road and into the ditch as I wend my way down the Aperture highway.
Here’s the background story. In 2007 I bought a 20” iMac and commenced shortly thereafter to use iPhoto for storing and organizing my Nikon digital images. I have never used iPhoto for editing but instead have always used Photoshop Elements as an external editor. (I currently use PSE 6 for Mac and intend to retain it as an external editor with Aperture 3). I acquired iPhoto Library Manager and currently have the many thousands of images in my iPhoto Library broken up into dozens of sub-libraries, each with a number of albums.
I plan to download Aperture 3 from the Apps Store in the near future and have acquired the following in the meantime:
New 27” iMac with Lion, 2 TB HD, and 8 GB RAM
    “Aperture 3” by Dion Scoppettuolo
“Focus on Apple Aperture” by Corey Hilz
Three Aperture Help items: User Manual, Exploring Aperture, and Keyboard Shortcuts.
I have done some skimming of the above written material and expect soon to review it in much greater detail before downloading Aperture 3. If it sounds like I’m a bit apprehensive about Aperture 3 and am going overboard in preparing for it you’re right! I’m hoping to avoid unexpected surprises that might throw me for a loop.
One of my biggest concerns is what to do with my existing iPhoto Library. Should I leave it as is or should I import it into Aperture 3? Will all of those many sub-libraries still be distinct entities that look the same as they did in iPhoto with the same content and format? Most of those sub-libraries are smaller than they need to be, and I would like to combine many of them. Would this be reasonably easy to do if I imported my iPhoto Library into Aperture 3?
Are there any particular issues about Aperture 3 that have given users problems that I need to be aware of? If it's of importance I shot JPEGs only for a long time but recently commenced shooting RAW only, so most of the images in my iPhoto Library are JPEGs. I expect to continue to shoot RAW only after I acquire Aperture 3.
    Bob

    Hello Bob,
to able to advice you better we would to need more about the size of your iPhoto Libraries. The amount of images you need to store will determine, if you should better set up a referenced library or a managed library.
Here is a guide on how to transit from iPhoto to Aperture:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/how.html.
The basic procedure would be to import a complete iPhoto Library into Aperture. This will ensure that you import the edited images as well as the original masters, and in the Aperture library you will find new folders, projects, and albums that will mirror the corresponding items in iPhoto. Also your keywords and captions will be preserved.
You can import all of your iPhoto libraries this way into one single Aperture Library and unite them.
Some common pitfalls you should be aware of:
Aperture and external drives: Since you have a 2TB internal disk you will probably not need to put your Aperture Library onto an external volume, but you should be aware that an Aperture library needs to be on a locally mounted volume, MacOS X formatted.
Aperture is not designed for network access, and it is a single user system. You cannot use it as a shared database.
Experiment with Aperture and explore it, before you build a large database. You need to plan the design in advance. See Kirby Krieger's Advice here:
Kirby Krieger: Start Small and Gain Skill: Re: Importing masters from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and saving as referenced files on external drive
Post back, if you have more questions. I am sure others will chime in.
Welcome to Aperture and Good Luck for the transit!

  • ABC Superbowl Ads are in HD - why not more HD ads?

There seems to be alot of HD editors in this forum, so what better than to discuss my impressions of the flagship HD broadcast of the year.
I've been watching the Superbowl broadcast on ABC in HD via Comcast on a Plasma Display. The game footage looks spectacular although I don't know which flavor HD is being used for the broadcast.
My guess is 1080i 24mbit although it very well could be 720 60P. 42" Plasma displays max out at 720 lines resolution, so I can't see the difference between the two. The cameras are probably Sony Cinealta's or Varicams. Anyone familiar with the workflow behind the Superbowl production? Please chime in here if you know anything. It looks better than most HD programming which I would attribute to a higher than usual data rate.
This is one of the first HD broadcasts I've seen where the ads aren't SD. OK, a few have been SD, but most are full-blown widescreen HD. When a company pays $3M for a single air time, I suppose the production expenses of HD are very minor. My impression is that the SD ads in comparison to the HD ones just make the company not advertising in HD look cheap. Since I make ads for a living, I don't want my clients to look cheap.
This is a very broad topic, but I have several questions that have been nagging me:
When an ad agency traffic's the ads to the station, do they traffic an SD and an HD version simultaneously? Has anyone here produced and actually trafficed an HD commercial to a station? If so, which HD and tape formats are the most supported by stations? What considerations lead the ad agency to justify HD traffic?
If you ask me, it seems that ads that run in HD make a positive impression on the consumer (assuming they can view HD) which improves the product's appeal. Advertisers want this, so I've been surprised there are so few HD commericals. Clearly, the HD adopted consumer will skew to higher income and demographic, which is also a very desirable differentiation that ad agencies should consider. It just makes sense that we should see better adoption of HD commercials than we've seen lately.
I work at an ad agency and we shoot our spots in HD (usually a rented Varicam) but always output to SD Beta when sending ads to the stations. It would be nice to start pushing HD content to the stations but when I ask our station reps, the answer from the station is always "no". This is frustrating since the spots are often scheduled to air during HD programming.
    Any thoughts on this?

My guess is 1080i 24mbit although it very well could
be 720 60P. 42" Plasma displays max out at 720 lines
resolution, so I can't see the difference between the

    Varicams.
varicams or cinealtas may have been used for eng packages but not for the game. this is mobile tv production with at the very least 3 prodution trucks for the abc show but i suspect abc had more, considering the overly-hyped, overly-producted nature of this "show." for the world series, the chicago compound had10 or so trucks for three shows.
the cameras, depending upon the production truck, would have been sony or ikegami or thomson high def triax controlled cameras and i believe abc sports, as well as fox sports, likes their shows in 720p.
Anyone familiar with the workflow behind
the Superbowl production? Please chime in here if
you know anything. It looks better than most HD
programming which I would attribute to a higher than
    usual data rate.
i wouldn't attribute anything to the data rate of the cameras. the high def signal leaves the truck but then is immediately stomped on at transmission and then to create more revenue for your provider, it's stomped on and crushed even more to allow more channels and more ads so what you're seeing at home on your plasma is a small fraction of what i see straight out of the camera ccu.
the quality that your seeing is directly indicative of the senior video operator's skills, the skills of his team and the lighting of the arena. the video guy had days to tweak in his cameras, good video ops behind him that could and would follow his color imagery and perhaps fairly even lighting in the arena.
of course this is conjecture on my part as i didn't watch the broadcast but i've worked enough sporting events that i know the score. just saturday i worked a basketball game with thomson ldk6000 high def cameras, five to be exact. the espn producer beat a bush back to my area to slap my back on how good the imagery was. funny that, the arena is one of the worst i've been in where one end is dark and green and the other end is bright and red and the audience is blue. i don't know a video guy that would paint each camera for each section as there's not enough time.
sometimes the quality of the work your seeing is the result of good operators rather than state of the art equipment and if you've been in production trucks than you know what i mean.

  • Conflict between Flash and CoffeeCup Web Form

    Hi
I can't solve this and I really need some help:
I'm developing a site using CoffeeCup webform together Adobe Flash CS4 and DW CS4 on the same page.
When viewing through FF, Safari, Opera, Chrome both components will work although errors will be reported in error logs.
    see: http://www.realorganizingsolutions.com/ … ation.html
When viewing through IE8 the *web form works fine* BUT the flash will only appear erratically - often not at all. To get the flash to play at all you have to click the link multiple times.
Coffeecup uses flash to build the form hence my belief that there is a conflict in the javascript.  By commenting out the CoffeeCup web form ( starts line 38) the flash works fine which also makes me think it is the javascript in the web form.
I am at a loss as to what to do about this. I've searched high and low. My javascript is weak.
    My Platform:
Coffecup Web form 7.8 set to php
    Flash: CS4
    DW CS4
    Dell XP Pro
    Many Many thanks
    Vincej

I have do that already. At first, I try to set it 1 msec but the form runtime seem like to be frozen, so I set the timer just for 300msec (I set with that value , so my clock tick can follow the system clock in difference about 99ms with the system clock tick, I could tolerance that).
The problem is when I focusing on one text item and type something on it.
Everytime the timer expire, It will trigger the WHEN-TIMER-EXPIRED, while in the trigger itself, I wrote one of this procedure:
    SET_APPLICATION_PROPERTY('my_window',WINDOW_TITLE,vTime);
Everytime this procedure run, My cursor will lost its focus with the last item I entered.
(The problem showed up if you press space-bar on the text item, because everytime you press space-bar, the cursor will return to the left position of the value in that text item. That's what I said problem with "spacing", it wouldn't do any spacing to the value in the text item).
Of course, I have anticipation for that. I set the item property (Keep Cursor position) to true and it works fine. The cursor didn't runaway to the left, but it still wouldn't do any spacing, in other way, the cursor will return to its position of last focused text item, if the last character of the text item is space (from space-bar, I mean)It will be erased. The cursor will pretend like the last character is no space at all.
I think that's the problem, because I can't do any space in that item (especially, if I set the timer with lower value than 300 msec).
what I'm trying to ask is "Are there any tip or trick to make the cursor know if the last character is space and will return to the "real last" of the string in the text item ?
Thank you for your suggestion and also thanks for your opinion, Chandrangadan, but I have already do that (It doesn't work if I set the timer lower than your 1000 ms)...

  • Nokia Lumia not being released in USA

So the Nokia Lumia phones, the saviours of Nokia, the new phones from Nokia featuring the new Windows 7.5 OS are here! And THIS is what Nokia is pushing out to show they are still in the game, to claw back that lost market share! WE ARE BACK!
Oh but we aren't releasing them in the USA.
    What?!?!?
I hate to use internet slang, but I cannot think of a more suitable and succinct term than EPIC FAIL.
Seriously Nokia, am I sitting here watching you commit suicide?
Is Stephen Elop a secret Agent Provocateur from MS sent inside to kill the beast from within, cripple them or make them go bust, so that Microsoft can buy all of Nokia's sweet, sweet patents on the cheap, so they can increase their patent protection racket that brings in most of Microsoft's money these days?
I am completely aghast by all of this. Are Nokia's board of directors in on it? How can they allow this self harm to continue?

Everything I've read says these new phones will be released in the US. But my understanding is they will be released in Europe first.
One theory is that Nokia's brand has taken such a beating in the states that they don't want to risk bugs/product imperfections knocking them down even further. But the European consumer has a more positive impression of Nokia's and are willing to overlook such kinks, and be more patient while Nokia corrects the problems...sort of like beta testers. So by the time the devices roll out to US customers in 2012, the major problems will be corrected, and Nokia will have a better chance of being successful in the US.

  • Opencl acceleration makes premiere crash

I was really excited about premiere pro since I installed the evaluation version a few days ago, but today I'm just disappointed in Adobe and here is why.
This week-end, I switched to mercury openCL accelerated rendering, only to find out that premiere would crash without any error message as soon as some video or picture is to be displayed. After hours of searching websites and forums for a solution, uninstalling and reinstalling my amd graphics driver, I finally tried to contact a adobe premiere expert by chat. The guy answered me right away: no chat or phone support for evaluation versions.
I can understand the decision not to spend work effort on non-paying maybe customers, but the more I think about it, the more it makes me wonder if Adobe really understands what an evaluation software is all about... namely convincing people to buy their stuff:
I, the customer, find a neat piece of software, start evaluating it in order to decide whether or not it is worth my money. Starting to understand how it works, I try to get the most performance out of it, switch a setting and find out that the product actually is quite unstable on my setup (which is far from being exotic). My positive feeling about the product starts to wobble, but since I am quite convinced I don't put it away without searching for a solution. Used to get my hands dirty when computer issues arise, I put a few hours of effort into finding a workaround. Without success. Taking a closer look at Adobes support service, my positive impression is back: I can contact a premiere expert by chat.
And here it comes, counterproductive and just so... let's say it, stupid: Unfortunately, we don't provide chat or phone support to evaluation version users.
Come on, that can't be serious? I'm evaluating this software, and they make me understand: oh, it does not work? well, buy it, and then maybe we will make it work for you!
I love software business... It tries to make people accept the unacceptable. Imagine looking for a sports car. You find a very nice one which has a city mode which limits the engine to 50HP, and a much more exciting sports mode which unleashes all the 450HP it packs. They let you take a ride, you fall in love with the car, think about buying it for real. You want of course to know exactly what you're buying. Unfortunately, when switching from city mode to sports mode, the engine stops. Ok, bad impression... but you like the car and give them a second chance: you ask the dealer to check it out, so that you can try the other mode. How would you react to the dealer answering you: No, if you want to see what it's like, you must buy it first.
What the hell?! Who would not just walk away?
And here, I am supposed to pay for a piece of software that does not run properly on my PC?
    How ... disappointing!

    Hello Vinay,
    Thank you for your answer.
I updated my version of permiere to 7.2.2 (33) today, unfortunately it still crashes as soon as opencl acceleration is activated.
My operating system is windows 8.1
I have 2 amd graphic cards in my rig:
    R9 280x
    HD5870
When I select mercury opencl, premiere crashes as soon as anything has to be displayed. It is independent of the type of material (pictures or videos) I browse in the media explorer and display in the source window. It crashes also as soon as I play the timeline, whether there are effects or not.
The videos and pictures I'm processing are all taken with a gopro hero3 and a galaxy note 3.
    Regards,
    Severin

  • ICal Compatibility with PALM

I am new to Apple- but so far am very positively impressed.
I have a Palm Pilot and have installed the Palm Software on my Mac. It runs fine.
Is there any way to have iCal replace or at least import from Palm my calendar and address book?
Then , can iCal support my handheld palm device ? I t is a Zire?
    Thank you ,
    Allan

Palm pretty much gave up any real support of OS X a couple of years ago. iCal is sync-able to your Palm but not through the Palm Desktop software. You need to get something like Missing Sync for Palm OS. I used it (pre-iPod Touch days) and it sync'd my Treo and Tungsten quite happily. It's not very expensive and can be downloaded at http://www.missingsync.com/.
On the importing from Palm calendar and address book--just be sure to sync your Palm one last time with the Palm Desktop software before you install Missing Sync. On your first sync with the new software, your info will come off the Palm and into Address Book and iCal.
Another side note--If I remember right, you should uninstall the Palm Desktop software prior to installing the Missing Sync software. (Just sync your Palm that one last time before doing that.)
