POSIX Error / Will Not Boot

I have a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB HD in my Macbook Pro, and it will not boot. It gets to the loading screen with the apple and the spinning circle, but it just hangs there.
I tried booting from the Snow Leopard installation disk and formatting with Disk Utility, but it gives me that infamously mysterious "POSIX: Cannot allocate memory." error.
I tried taking the hard drive out and connecting it with a SATA to USB adapter, and Disk Utility could easily format and re-install OS X SL on it, and the computer would boot from it as an external hard drive. I tried installing the HD back into the laptop and it wouldn't boot again, which lead me to believe that it was an issue with my laptop, not the hard drive.
I then took it out and connected it to a Windows computer with the SATA to USB, and it worked like normal; I could browse the filesystem (I had the BootCamp HFS+ drivers installed).
I just took my old external hard drive out and took it apart. I put that hard drive into my laptop and am booting it from the SL install disk and was going to try to format that. For some reason, that hard drive just doesn't show up in Disk Utility, so I'm assuming that that hard drive is just broken by itself, although it worked with the SATA to USB adapter. But that's a completely different issue that I don't really care about anyway right now.
I just want my normal hard drive to work. The laptop is out of warranty, and I don't really want to buy a $250 or howevermuch Apple Care warranty just to get this one thing fixed, because this is obviously Apple's issue (I come to this conclusion from reading many other threads that contain less detail, but end up with the same issue as me).
I did try resetting the NVRAM and booting into single user mode and typing "fsck -fy" or something along those lines... I don't feel like looking up the place I found it. But yeah, I've tried those both.
Any suggestions? Thanks a ton; I need this computer for school...

Lol yes, it is my issue in that sense. What I meant though is that it's an issue caused by a defect that Apple should solve. I say this because I've seen other people with the same problem. But yes, it is my own issue that I need to solve.
I thought of the ribbon cable, too. To be honest, I'm not really comfortable bringing it into the Apple Store. Do you think it'd be a good bet to just try the ribbon cable first, and then if that doesn't work to bring it into the store?
I found the cable on iFixit for $39.95. Do you think that's a reasonable price?

    Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
    WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
    What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
    Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

    If you want to solve your problems, unjailbreak. And don't do it again, because jailbreaking causes problems as you read about in that article. You can try Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

    If you cannot acces to the boot menu by pressing F8 you can try to recover the the master boot record from Windows Xp professional installation Cd, to do this:
    Attention: don't run these commands if you have more than one operating systems running in your laptop.
    Boot from Windows Xp installation cd
    Choose repair installation from console by pressing "C" key.
    A console will open asking you for administrator password, insert the password and press enter.
    Run de command: FIXMBR (It will write a new boot record)
    Run de command: FIXBOOT (It will write a new boot file)
    Restart the laptop and now windows should start without problems.

    My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

    A few questions first:
    Which model of Mac mini is it, a G4 or Intel? Has it ever booted correctly after the 10.5 upgrade? How did you perform the 10.5 upgrade, was it an upgrade install or a clean install? Does it boot into Safe mode (holding the shift key down while booting)? Will it boot to the Leopard installer (holding the C key down during booting with the install disk inserted? Have you got a good backup of your data?

  • Battery Error 601 and Notebook will not boot

    My notebook will not bootup anymore.  It was running fine then I just closed the screen and went to class.  Usually this just puts it to sleep.  When I opened it back up, it would not start...  It was totally dead.  When I plug it into the charger, I see a "Pimrary Battery Error" 601 displayed for a few seconds and then it starts to bootup.  It never fully boots-up, it shuts off totally before I get past the little HP splash.
    When I plug the charger into the notebook, I see the charging orange LED for a little while, but then it switches to white and then back to orange and then totally off.   I have tried multiple chargers and it always does the same thing.
    Since the notebook will not boot even when plugged in, I am suspecting something in the charging system/main board more than the battery.  Is there anyway to tell which components are bad?
    This is an almost 2 year old Envy 4-1215dx, Product ID: D1A99UA#ABA 
    It's been a great notebook upto now...  Any ideas on what to check and how?

    You can also try a Hard Reset in order to get you PC to boot long enough to run a diagnostics.
    Hard Reset
    You may also try with the battery removed and just the AC Adapter.
    If nothing seems to work you can always try a new main battery since they usually are fairly inexpensive. Just Google the Part# shown on your battery.

    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

  • CRIO startup directory was typed STARTUP and now will not boot. How do I recover from this error or how do I rename the directory when my proxy server is read only due no startup files?

    I loaded files on the cRIO but used upper case letters for the startup directory.  Now I cannot access the RIO since it didn't boot. The proxy server comes up read-only so I can't reload the files or change the directory.  I tried the RS232 port but I can't get it to respond to commands even though I can see the processor boot.

  • 2009 Mac Pro will not boot up under Windows

    I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it.
    However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
    My question to the community is, does anybody know why this is happening and is there a known fix for this? Quite frankly, having to disconnect a monitor just to restart is very tedious and frustrating. 
    I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads.
    If anyone knows of a fix or what to do in this situation, or if you are also having this issue, I would love to hear your input!

    For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same.
    The system passes all ASD testing.
    The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
    2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
    2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
    16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
    Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
    4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
    Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

    In Windows I am using the latest (12.4) Catalyst Software Suite, 64 bit of course, downloaded directly from AMD's site after installing the drivers from Boot Camp.
    As for installing Windows I used an original (not burned) installation media (Disk is in a pristine condition). And yes, Windows is fine, the problem just seems to be getting the system to boot up Windows with that second monitor. However if the "problem monitor" is disconnected the system boots fine 100% of the time and connecting it later after booting the system will still operate properly.
    For the sake of arguement I swapped monitor cables and connected the "second" monitor to the mini displayport adapter to verify that it wasn't a cabling issue and I'm still yielding the same issues.
    As for GPU testing, I've played games (Crysis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 3, etc.) and I've had no issues with the card or stability.
    You would think that Apple would try to find a fix for this, especially considering the caliber of this machine.

  • OSX 10.6.8 server will Not Boot

    Hi my 10.6.8 server will not boot.  System is a 2009 Mac pro.  I have run disk utility from the original server software install disk, ran repair disk, and repair disk permissions.  Get some acl found errors have read that they most often are erroneous, Still got the same errors after permission repairs.  While booting in verbose mode get the following messages before it stops:
    kern.maxprocoeruip: 266 -> 2400
    launchctl: Couldn't stat("/library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.asterisk.plist"): Nosuch File or directory (note: removed asterisk from this system months ago)
    launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mach_init.d/chum.plist
    launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mac_ini/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
    launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mach_init.d/pilotfish.plist
    Unexpected error triggering kextd volume watching.
    /: Couldn't get description from Disk Arbitration..
    I did read on another post here to try to reinstall the os, however when I try to install over the operating system it says I am trying to install an older os and it will not let me install in the same volume....  Although I am confident I have all the data on backups as well have timemachine backups, I would rather not have to erase and install this machine. 
    Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated. 

    I found that I had a bad harddrive, or at least that is what I think happened..  I did have a time machine backup as well, although in hindsight, I should have made some manual backups of my open directory and the databases hosted on the server.  In any case I ended up purchasing "server grade" harddrives and reinstalling the OS on to the new blank hard drives, I was then able to recover from my time machine backup, however, I did have the issue of the restore going over 100%, I tried this several times and the same result with no end after hours and hours.   After reading through various forums I found that clicking the mouse button for about 10 minutes straight once it hit 100% finally worked, I was lucky that the Time machine backup had good data on it since I have read several posts saying that Time machine doesn;t backup directoies or any "open files" very well, however I had no problems after recovering from the backup.  I do however now backup or archive my directory everyday, and I rely on Filemaker to backup its own databases, however I still use time machine as well...

    Problem:
    After being shut off for more than 2 hours my computer will not boot up on the 1st try. It goes to a message that says"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I shut it down using the power button, wait for the hard drives to stop spinning, and then hit the power again and it starts up just fine. It will restart just fine also as many time as I want to restart it, after it has been running in windows. Once it is running, it runs terrific, no problems at all.
    If you go right into the bios after sitting for a while you see this in the boot sequence, notice there is no hard drives(Nvidia Stripe)in the boot sequence.
    After shutting it down and starting right back up this is what you see in the boot sequence. This pic is from a different time, thats why the boot sequence is different.
    Here is a short youtube video (2:10 sec) made to help show the problem. (I called it a Cold boot Storage problem for another thread) just ignore that.
    Things I have done to try to solve the problem:
    1. Update the bios
    2.I have moved the boot sequence around, Foppy1st, or CD 1st, ect. and even disabled the [USB:HP Photosm] in the boot sequence, Hard Drives are 1st now.
    3.Replaced the Mobo Battery thinking that it was not remembering the boot sequence
    4.Checked that the Hard Drives are connected to the correct plugs (6-7) on the motherboard, and that the raid connector JP1 was shorted out for Raid 0 and the blue indicator light was flashing.
    * Just a note in this area. I did set up the Raid 0 with a tech from MSI because I was having an issue with the initial set up, and I did use the Nvidia raid drivers that came with the motherboard.                Pchas01 in another thread thought that this could be part of the issue because it is not necessary to load the drivers when you set up the Motherboard in the Raid mode.
    F10 and look in the Raid Array
    5. Pulled the jumper off of JP1 and it just went to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" screen much faster, but would never boot up after 5 tries. Put the jumper back in and started up on the 2nd try like the normal problem.
    6.Went into the On-Chip ATA devices in the bios and Changed the Raid Mode to an IDE, I cannot F10 and get into the Raid Array now, but I guess that is normal.
       Now this is what my boot sequence currently looks like.
    That is the point that I am right now. It runs great, games are awesome on it. Its just does not want to start up on the 1st attempt.

    I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

    Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.

    I am still working on getting the seagate diagnostics to work, I am getting an error message before I can even test them.
     I do have another question. Why is my HP Printer showing up in the Hard drive test, and also why is it showing up in my boot sequence, is this normal?
    And speaking of boot sequences I got in there again just now and saw 2 [USB:HP Photosm]

    My iPod touch 2G will not boot.
    Heres the specs of the problem:
    It turns on with an Apple logo with a spinning wheel under it.
    I have tried editing the hosts file with the Apple server codes.
    I have tried restoring 16 times. (I log what I do on it)
    The iPod has never been jailbroken.
    It is an MC model.
    It is 8GB.
    Its formated for Windows. (Windows 7)
    iTunes 10.4
    I have tried "The Tiny Umbrella TSS Server with SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1"
    I tried "RecBoot" no luck.
    My Mom will kill me if I can't fix this.  I am going on a 9 hour vacation ride with 7 year old brothers that get really cranky.  I leave August 6th, 2011.  So I need to have it fixed before then. So i really, really, really need help!

    Try uninstalling iTunes and installing the 10.4 iTunes that came out a few days ago.  Click start, run and paste "%Userprofile%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates" without quotes.  Find iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and delete it.  Try restoring again and Tiny Umbrella is only for iPhones.  Do not use it on iPod Touch or various errors appear.  iPod Touches can downgrade at any time (idk about iOS 5).  If it doesn't work, reply.  :)

    It boots all the way through to the last step - "Login Window Startup". It will not boot in Safe Mode, PRAM reset, etc. No Joy. It has sat and spun the colored wheel of death for hours.

    Boot from the Install CD by holding down the C key at startup. Do not install or even choose a language. Choose Disk Utility from the Installer Menu. Select your Hard drive and click "Repair". If anything is fixed, rerun again until it has no errors. Then run "Repair Permissions" once. Its many messages can generally be ignored.
    If it will not chime a second or third or fourth time in response to the
    Command Option p r
    keys held down at startup, anecdote says that the PRAM battery is likely to be dead.

    Is the hard disk recognized in the BIOS and are you able to perform hard disk diagnostics.  Perhaps you should speak to wherever you purchased the computer.  Were you supplied with recovery disks?
