  • Possessed iMac 27: Brightness control turns itself down while I'm using computer, fights me when I try to turn it back up

This computer is possessed! It literally seems like a ghost is pressing the brightness key on the keyboard while I'm working. It happens sporadically and seemingly without reason. The brightness icon pops up on the screen as the screen quickly dims. When I try to turn the brightness back up, it is like playing tug of war with the ghost. I turn it up, it instantly goes back down. After 20 seconds or so of this foolishness, it stops and I can resume working. Until it happens again. AARRGGHH!!!
    Thoughts?

Try doing both a SMC and PRAM reset, do each at least 2x. Then retest and repost, if you don't know how to do these you will find info in:

I bought a scanner Fujitsu (model sv600) in which is delivered a CD of installation of Acrobat 11 for Windows. The problem is that I possess an iMac. How can it be done?

This page ScanSnap SV600 : Fujitsu Global shows that Acrobat is for Windows, not for Mac. There is no trade-up option so far as I know. Indeed, Acrobat Standard does not exist for Mac at all, only Acrobat Pro. Which you could buy.
Or, you can invest in Parallels Desktop which will allow you to run Windows apps on your Mac.

  • 27 inch iMac is Possessed?

Recently my late 2009 iMac i7 has started making a rapid beeping noise and the mouse goes crazy. When you pass the mouse pointer over the top menu the menu items look like they are being rapidly selection from left to right. If you press the mouse (Magic Mouse) the noise and rapid selections will stop until you let go of the mouse. If you can manage to reboot the computer, this activity may or may not stop. Turning off the mouse and/or keyboard (both wireless) does not seem to stop the problem.
I have nothing to indicate whether this is related or not but this has started happening since Vmware Fusion just pushed out an update a few days ago. Once could almost describe the behavior as if the Tab or some other key on the keyboard is stuck. However, it's not. Or, at least it does not appear to be. I am using one of the older White Apple Bluetooth keyboards.
Any clues would be most appreciated.

I seem to recall my G3 doing something like this. I don't remember what got it to stop, but I'd try doing a PRAM Reset. Hold down CMD-Option-P-R together at startup, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let it finish booting.
Do you have another keyboard to try?
Also, sometimes, weirdness of various kinds can be fixed with a simple restart or a boot into Safe Boot. To Safe Boot, hold the Shift key down at startup. The bootup will take much longer than an ordinary one as it's doing some checking and repairing, so let it finish. Leave it in Safe Mode for a few minutes, then restart as usual. Then give it a minute or two before doing anything.

  • Font weirdness! Is my iMac possessed?

I added some fonts from work, and coincidentally added another user account.
Now when I use Firefox in either account, all the fonts are bizarre; one is a ding of some sort, another is some kind of foreign font.
And when I use Safari in the new account, I can't get the "normal" fonts. They're not as bizarre as Firefox (they're readable), but they're not normal.
I've tried finding the fonts and turning them off in Font Book, I've tried changing the fonts in the browser prefs, but no luck.
I also used Pacifist, in order to install the original fonts from my install disc without a complete archive and install; it did it, but gave me some error messages:
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/HelveLTMM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/Helvetica LT MM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/Times LT MM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/TimesLTMM._
I'd appreciate it if someone with more brains than me could help me figure out how to fix these fontgoblins...

The fonts giving you an error message are hidden in Panther and Tiger. These Multiple Master fonts are used by Preview in particular to mimic the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Not being able to write the resource fork data could be an indication that the hard drive's file directory is damaged. If you have it, boot to your Disk Warrior CD and repair the hard drive.
Along with removing the two bad boy fonts Klaus1 indicated, download and run Font Finagler to clear the system's font cache files.

  • Having continuous issues with my iMac, all I want to do is perform a clean install... at my wit's end. Help please. :(

I apologize in advice if this story is discombobulated or more information is needed to provide me with an answer. I will do my best to provide as much details as possible, but this is a problem that has been occuring for the past few weeks and some things I've forgotten the specifics of.
I will start by explaining that my iMac specs are:
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Version 10.6.8
I've owned this iMac since about April of 2010. I've never had any problems with it until recently. At one point in time, I had a Boot Camp partition made in order to install Windows, as I wanted to run some games that weren't available to Mac users. After awhile, I eventually bought a Windows Laptop for my gaming needs. When this happened, I decided to erase previously stated Boot Camp partition in order to free up more space on my hard drive.
After a few months, had major issues involving a trojan virus on my laptop, it destroyed my hard drive, and I wasn't able to buy a new one at that time. Recently decided to try and create a new Boot Camp partition to reinstall Windows. When I attempted that, (I apologize, I don't remember the specific error) it wouldn't allow me, and from what I remember after doing some google research, it sounded like somehow my hard drive had become disorganized, and needed to somehow be reorganized.
At some point in my google research I found that using the Repair function in Disk Utilities would possibly help. When I tried that, (the only reason I know this is because I tried just now to get the error to pop up) I'm given a message "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
So here I'm thinking, "okay! No big deal! I have the disk still, I will just back up my hard drive to an external hard drive". So I buy an external HDD, back up everything I need. I then put the disk in, and my optical drive spends some time thinking, then spits it back out. It does this repeatedly. I do some more google research, find that optical drives crapping out on mac users isn't all that uncommon. I try to clean it with a trick someone suggested. I then tilted my iMac to one side, it accepts a cd! I try it again, and I'm no longer able to trick my iMac into reading disks. Sad face.
Instead of hefting large sums of cash at Apple to replace my optical drive, I buy a far more affordable external cd/dvd drive that is working perfectly fine. So after waiting for that to be delivered, 3 days later, I'm excited to finally get a clean install with my OS X drive. At this point, I care little about repairing, and have decided to just completely clean install. I restart my iMac, boot from disk, and I get the spinny thing for about 20 minutes. I think, "hmm... should it take this long?" So I reboot and try again. Same thing. I then let it run overnight, and wake up to spinny thing. When my Mac is on, it reads the dvd just fine. It just won't boot from it and let me start the clean install.
So then I get the idea maybe I can do a remote install of the disk from my friend's macbook. No such luck, won't seem to recognize anything. Then I see that I can make a copy of the disk image to my computer, and burn that image to a partition made on my external HDD, so that I can boot from that. Well, the only info I could find was a gentleman burning a downloaded version of OSX Lion, but I figured, "hey, its the same thing, right?" I guess not. I tried copying the image using the restore function in Disk Utilities, and it does indeed show up when I hold Option at start up, but booting from it does not start up properly. It starts up like any normal time I restart. I'm thinking its cause the way I copied it didn't involve a .dmg file.
So I try to copy the image to a file on my computer, but when I do that, I get some sort of input/output error.
What can I do at this point? I thought I originally set up Time Machine but when I checked recently, no such luck. All I want is a fresh reboot of my Mac. I'm guessing somehow my hard drive became corrupted in some way. I mean, it truly doesn't seem to be affecting anything, except somehow even after deleting all known movie, music, game, etc. files, I still am using up 270 gb of space. Maybe I never un-did the Boot Camp partition properly and kinda screwed myself on this one.
I've tried just about everything. I never invested in Apple Care, but even had I done so, I think it would have exceeded the warranty, as I had thought it was 2 years. I could be wrong, either way, its water under the bridge now. I need to fix this myself. I'd still like to use my iMac for general use, and to utilize the 1 TB of storage it possesses.
Any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for the wall of text, its been a complicated few weeks. Thanks!

Whew... never buy an iMac or Laptop from Apple without the 3 year extended AppleCare... well 2 years extended... & I think they should be called on this, they should come with a 5 year Warranty, with more available if you want.
I think, "hmm... should it take this long?"
No way, Houston, we haave a problem, not sure what... RAM, Logic Board, etcd.
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • Trying to put 10.5 on G5 imac

    Hello:
I just came into possession of a G5 imac that I'm trying to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard.
    It's a:
    1.8Ghz G5
    1.5 GB ram
    80Gig HD
Unfortunately, when I pop in the 10.5 install dvd & select install......reboot.....during the reboot process, the system spits the dvd back out. The dvd has been used before, so I don't think *it is the issue. I **thought the system requirements had been met for upgrade to 10.5, but maybe not.
    Suggestions??
    TM

Try inserting a different disc and see if it stays in. If it does, then the install disc is damaged, if the other disc doesn't stay in, then there's something wrong with your system.

    Try it this way:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If there's still a problem then usually it means a problem with the DVD or your optical drive. For the former I suggest a lint-free cloth and plain rubbing alcohol. Moisten the cloth and clean the DVD starting from the spindle and working outward in concentric circles. Check for scratches, dirt, fingerprints, etc. as all of these could cause the problem. Look closely at the tracks closest to the spindle core which is the area where the disc's boot block is written.

  • Why can't I download iTunes onto my iMac g4 , says I need Internet connectionbut it's on. It finds iTunes online but says I need a connection to download??

HHi all, I have to to possession of a apple imac G4, I'm connected to net as safari finds things but when I click on site nothing happens, when I click on iTunes on desk top it asks for a Internet connection but it's there as safari wouldn't find sites?? I have a little arrow thing on top right like this <...> saying connected but stil I can't download a new version of iTunes or anything else. Am I doing some thing wrong as I know nothing about macs.many thanks in advance joe

iTunes has to contact Apple to send your agreement to the new conditions, but your security software has to allow this contact. If blocked, you'll get a time out message. Follow the instructions here to check your security software settings: iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues

  • IMac windows constantly moving and changing by themselves

My iMac is possessed.  Windows are constantly opening and closing and changing size by them selves.  Brightness goes up and down by itself. iTunes opens by itself.  I can't select individual files in finder on the rare moments everything does stop moving.  I updated software, plugged the computer, router, disconnected peripherals.  I disabled the iPad from automatically connecting with the iMac.  I changed to a wired mouse and turned off the key pad, still does it.  Our iPad was doing it too, a few months ago and would play random music at odd times, really loud. Disconnecting everything worked at that time, but not now.  Help!!

To be clear, when I say 'save', I mean select the 'Move To' Message menu pick. Further, the issue in question is the appearance (or not ) of an additional pick on the Message menu, to wit, Move to {folder name} Again ... And in all cases, in all tests, the folder named in the Move To process was the same one.
There is only one other user - my wife, who is afraid to even empty the trash. I did the test in that account as well, and it functioned the same as on my own account. On to the suggested Safe mode test.
Prior to shutting down, I had sent myself a test message, retrieved the mail, selected that message in the Inbox, pulled down the Message menu, and noted that the 'again' message pick was not there. I left that message in the Inbox and restarted in Safe mode. Then I selected the leftover message, pulled down the Message menu, and the 'again' pick was not there. I left the message in the Inbox.
Then I restarted normally, did the same sequence, and the 'again' pick was still missing. Hmmm. I sent myself a second test message, went through the process again, saving first the leftover message (no 'again' pick showed), and then the new second message (the 'again' pick had returned). So one thing I discovered was that the 'again' pick does not survive a restart, for whatever that's worth.
Then, realizing that there was another case, I started all over again. In Safe mode I created, sent, retrieved, and saved two messages in that one session. The behavior was as I have described - no 'again' pick while saving the first, 'again' reappeared for the second save.

  • I bought this iMac about two weeks ago...

replacing an old G5 PowerMac running Tiger. It came preloaded with Lion. I'm very unhappy with Lion's performance and, short of trying to get a refund for this iMac, I'd like to reload a "stable" version of OSX. Is this possible? I have no install discs. This is interesting to me because the G5 came with one: this one came with only a tiny keyboard and a tempermental mouse, where only a few of the functions it's touted to possess actually work.
This iMac has 12 Gigs of RAM (three times the RAM on the G5) and 512 Megs of video memory (again, more than the old one) still the performance is markedly less than the PowerPC. My old Tiger runs circles around this so-called "Lion". I don't know what's going on with Apple but after dropping $1,600. on this iMac, I want better performance. This computer is used for very basic web surfing, email and photo manipulation. No Autocad or anything that would bog it down.
    2.7 Gig Core i5, Radeon HD 6770M 512 Megs. OSX Lion 10.7.2
Any help is appreciated. Be well.

Take it back. asap. It should be running flawlessly from the store. If you don't like Lion, it will be difficult to change back to SL on a brand new iMac, but good luck.

  • Can't Wipe Hard Drive of iMac G4 Running OS 10.2 Upgrade

    Hi,
I've been a Mac user for 7-8 years now, currently with a first generation MacBook (Black) from 2006 (2 GHz Core Duo).
My question, however, deals with an older Mac I have. I originally began using Macs on one of the earlier generations of domed, white iMacs in 2002. The specs are as follows for it:
    iMac (version 2.1)
    700 MHz G4 processor
    512 GB memory
    Running Mac OSX 10.2 Upgrade
My question deals with wiping the hard drive clean. I want to resell my iMac, to try and get something (though I know not much) for it, and so before I do it I want to not simply erase the hard drive but also write over it/completely wipe it so as to make sure sensitive information is fully deleted.
I found out that you can do this (i.e., writing over the hard drive multiple times) by using the startup disk beginning with OSX 10.2, but my problem stems from the fact that my startup/install disk for 10.2/Leopard is an upgrade, and not a full disk. When I bought the iMac in 2002, I did so right before Leopard came out, and so I bought the upgrade rather than the full package, and for some reason when I use the startup/install disk for it, I can't access the ability to wipe the hard drive clean (i.e., the "options" part, wherein I could choose to write over the hard drive and not just do a simple erase, doesn't appear when Disk Utility is brought up when restarting with the startup/install disk for 10.2 in the computer).
So my question is, how can I thus do a full wipe/write over of the hard drive, to securely, completely erase it, since the 10.2 upgrade disk isn't giving me that capability? Is there any possible way to do this, or do I have to somehow possess a full copy of 10.2 or later OS? (Also, FYI: I forgot to mention, I have no full copy of 10.4, since the startup/install disk for it included with my MacBook wasn't the full version on the black-colored disk, but the not-for-resale version on the gray-colored disk.)
I know this is my first time posting, so if I haven't been clear, please let me know. I'll be quick to answer back. Thanks, in advance.

the fact that my startup/install disk for 10.2/Leopard is an upgrade, and not a full disk.
10.2 is Jaguar or do you mean Leopard?
When I bought the iMac in 2002, I did so right before Leopard came out
That had to be Jaguar then, right? Did you have the PUMA install disk or OS9? >and so I bought the upgrade rather than the full package, and for some reason when I use the startup/install disk for it, I can't access the ability to wipe the hard drive clean
I remember that being the case with upgrade disks. Those options are not available if I remember right.
Is there any possible way to do this, or do I have to somehow possess a full copy of 10.2 or later OS?
Not if you have an earlier OS disk for that Mac.
You should be able to erase it, any way you want, using Target Disk Mode.
Then use Disk Utilty on your MacBook to do the erase on the iMac.
(Also, FYI: I forgot to mention, I have no full copy of 10.4, since the startup/install disk for it included with my MacBook wasn't the full version on the black-colored disk, but the not-for-resale version on the gray-colored disk.)
No, you can't use that disk...iMac is PPC based and MacBook is Intel plus it's a machine specific disk.
I know this is my first time posting, so if I haven't been clear, please let me know.
You are fine, except for the Jaguar/Leopard issue.
