Possibility of getting playlists back?

Hello -
I recently lost an external drive where my music was stored and iTunes library lived but fortunately I was able to move the files to my hard drive when it started acting hinky. I set it up on a new external and successfully re-established the library and all my music is there. Strangely, however, about 1/3 of my playlists are missing. not the music, just the playlist?
Is there a way to pull that back from a iPhone backup or a music backup (I was backing up the iTunes folder to the second external I have so it was fairly up to date). I don't need the whole library - just looking for those playlists b/c it took a bunch of time to do them.
Thanks for any help you can provide -
Alexa
p.s. while I've got you, any thoughts on music being stored locally vs on an external? I had only some client work (also backed up - whew!) and my iTunes on this external but I play music all the time, including from my iPhone with the Remote app. Is it just as fine to keep accessing it off the external or should I keep it on my internal iMac hard drive? I have the room. Thanks!

Hi Alexa,
There are ways to restore playlists with library backups, but the process can be complex and you also run the risk of losing your current playlists (If they do not exist in the backed up library)
To my knowledge you can't restore playlists from an iPhone/iPod as those devices are set so that music may only be added, not removed (includes playlists to my knowledge.)
With regard to storing music locally as opposed to and external hard drive, if possible I recommend local storage (mainly due to bad experiences with music on external HDs when they fail.) - As a rule of thumb I always recommend local storage of files as opposed to external storage (unless of course you've got a well established backup system.)
Regards,
Peter.

after sorting my pictures into albums, I deleted them from the camera roll, includings the ones filed in the albums. Would it e possible to get them back ?

A photo in the Camera Roll cannot be in an album unless the photo remains in the Camera Roll. Photos in an album or not duplicated. A photo in an album includes a pointer to the original photo stored in the Camera Roll. The Camera Roll is for temporary storage. Photos/videos can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
The Camera Roll is included with your iPhone's backup. If your iPhone's backup has been updated to include all photos that were in the Camera Roll and has not been updated since the photos were deleted, you can try restoring your iPhone from your iPhone's backup. Do not update your iPhone's backup before doing so and decline the prompt to update your iPhone's backup as the first step after selecting Restore.

  • Can I get playlists back if I've changed laptops and iTunes?

II've just got a new laptop. The py transferred my music from one laptop to the other but I had to re download iTunes. Is there any way of getting my playlists back I made on my old laptop on iTunes or do I need to make them all again?

If you copied over the whole iTunes folder then the playlists will be stored in the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder. Normally you would copy the entire folder into user's music on the new computer and it would be as if nothing had changed. If you added the media into a new library you wouldn't have got your playlists. If the library file is there, or can be retrieved from the old laptop the playlists can be recover from it. If you have any iPod or iOS devices that have your playlists there are ways to copy the data from them. If neither are possible then yes, you will have to start over.

  • Security deposit issue: customer service saying it is never possible to get it back

To anyone who might be able to straighten things out here,
first of all, I am not asking for a security deposit back right away. I was just asking for a possibility of getting my security deposit back and on which condition I can get it back. However, when I called up (800)-922-0204 and spoke with counselor after waiting half-an-hour, she told me I am unable to get security deposit back at all since it is non-refundable to anyone. I questioned her why is it called a deposit in such case, and she kept on insisting that security deposit is something I pay in the beginning to open up an account and it cannot be returned at all. I was puzzled since the guy at the retailer shop and he told me I can probably get the deposit back at some time later and check the estimated date to get the deposit back if I called the number specified above and talked to a counselor.
So I checked up the answers posted up in this forum and figured out that indeed security deposit is returned after certain criteria is met. I was really irritated and upset, but that's something I have to deal with, so I'll pass on that. Following are my conditions on Verizon account and I hope someone can tell me when I can possibly get the deposit back and/or where I can get such info.:
I first opened up my account in Verizon 4 years ago with $400 deposit (Aug. 2014). Then, as a Korean male, I had to go back to my country to serve      in military service that I had my account suspended for about 3 consecutive years. (Thanks to the Verizon retailer who helped me out at Oakdale Mall.)      The first condition to get the security deposit back was "to have 12 consecutive monthly bills paid without delay (No suspensions while doing so)" and I      know it was not done since I suspended my account at around 10th month (June 5th, 2011). I re-activated my account with a different phone and a plan      on Aug. 30th, 2014 and the guy at the Verizon service center in Vestal, NY told me to check when I can possibly get my security deposit back.
Sorry to leave such a long message here but I guess I am not good at summarizing things here. Please take the pain and help this poor kid out.
Thanks to y'all who reads it & leaves a possible answer to my question.

First of all, I assume you have a misprint and you opened your account ~4 years ago in August of 2010, not 2014(1 month ago).
Next, it appears you had your account suspended for 3 years after completing only 10 months of service and have recently re-activated the account.
If the above information is correct in your case, I would assume you will get your deposit back 12 months after reactivating your account without any further suspensions and/or late payments. So I would guess you will be eligible to get your deposit back in August, 2015.

  • Archive and Install - Getting Playlists Back

I was forced into re-installing Tiger due to the freezing issues with Leopard. The only option I had was "Archive and Install". I could not preserve user settings (it was greyed out). What is the best way to get my stuff back. In particular Playlists. I can easily find my songs and put them back in iTunes, but where did my playlists go? How can I get those back.

I'm afraid yes... I went to Disk Utility - File - New - Disk Image from folder. And then chose the folder with my user name. It goes ahead and creates the image file - which is 56kb btw.
The weird thing is that the Previous System file is 30gb. So, there is no way that my stuff is deleted. Just don't know how to get to it.
    Any ideas?

  • Getting Playlists back on Mac - music library was restored

I had to rebuild my G5 a while back. I restored all the music in my iTunes library but not the Playlists. The Playlists are on the iPod. Is there any way without using third party utilities I can get the Playlists back on the Mac. This does not involve copying music from the iPod to the Mac, because the music is already back on the Mac. I just need the Playlist definitions.
If I do need other software, any recommendations?
    Thanks.

    Hi Francisco,
Thanks for the reply. When searching on the software you recommended, I saw you provided the same reply a couple of weeks ago. I did not notice that reply when doing the original search on "Playlists", but thanks for replying without chastising me for an incomplete search.
It looks as though iGadget is a very complete package, which I will likely purchase in the future. I did try Senuti. I had two Playlists I wanted to copy from the iPod. Senuti handled the first one fine, and I was planning on purchasing it, but it stumbled on the second one. It kept saying it could not copy because an iTunes dialog was open, which was not the case. So I ended up not purchasing Senuti. For the second Playlist, I just manually created it and manually entered songs.
Thanks again, and GeorgeUK, hope the Francisco's reply was also helpful to you.

  • Computer formatted - want to rebuild iTunes library & get playlists back!

I had to get my computer formatted a while ago. My files were saved, including the iTunes folder in My Documents. I have downloaded iTunes and added my music to the library, but I have no idea how to get my playlists back. I've worked really hard to put them together. My iPod isn't synced yet, mostly because I don't want to lose my playlists and play counts, but I'm getting new albums and I will need to sync sometime. How can I rebuild my iTunes library, or at least get the playlists back? Please help, I beg you.

    Hi
This came off these forums and was posted by MacMuse (I think)
" The manual way around this problem is to use the iPod in its alter ego - that of portable computer disk drive. Successfully tested under iTunes for Windows 4.2 & 4.5; Windows XP. And follow these directions LINE BY LINE or iTunes will erase everything on the iPod.
    - Start with the iPod disconnected from the computer - DON'T CONNECT IPOD YET
    - open iTunes
    - open iTunes Preferences - this blocks iTunes from seeing an iPod connection; leave the preferences window up and running
    - connect the iPod to the computer, wait about 15 seconds before continuing
    - open 'My Computer'
    - Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab, enable 'show hidden files /folders'
    - open iPod icon in My Computer
    - open iPod_Control folder
    - you should see a folder named Music
    - drag this folder to somewhere on your computer hard drive
    - after the copy completes, right-click the new Music folder on your hard drive and select 'Properties'
    - clear the checkmark next to 'Hidden'
    - Close that explorer window
    - eject iPod from System tray "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.
This icon looks like a small gray rectangle with a green arrow floating above it. It's only there when a removable device (like the iPod in this case) is attached to the computer. Right-click & select 'Safely remove..', then click 'Stop' in the next window, OK in the next window, and then Close to complete the ejection.
    - disconnect the iPod from the computer
    - go back to iTunes, cancel the preferences window
    - File menu \ Add folder to Library \ find that Music folder copied over from the iPod
Your iTunes library should be back in action!"
This worked for me when I had to repartition and reformat my hard drive.

  • I have lost my Itunes account.. My guess is when i downloaded the new 10.O version that is when it messed my itunes completely up. I have done everything possible to get Itunes back on my computer and it's not working. I have spent 1000$ of dollars and ca

I have had itunes for a couple of years and now all of the sudden I don't. I have submitted several attempts to try and get it back on my Windows XP and no luck. I have purchased a dang Pc 3212 help that just cost me 35$ and that didn't work and I've rebooted, system restore and none of it is working. I'm to mad right now and i just want the darn thing fixed and I am getting so frustrated, this is one thing that I look forward to getting new music and now I have a 25$ Itunes card that I can't even use and why I don't know what else to do. Please fix this Laura

If your library was working on your computer and then popped up empty all of a sudden then this might be what you need...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • TS4108 Hello, all my Contacts from iPhone 5s and also from iCloud disappeared yesterday. Is it possible to get them back? Please Help. Thank you.

    Hello,
All my Contacts from iPhone 5s and also from iCloud disappeared yesterday. Can I get them back?
    Please Help.

If you begin syncing contacts with iCloud you will be given the option to merge your contacts with the accout.  If you do, your contacts will be uploaded to the account and will appear on both your phone and hers (if she is sharing the same account/ID).  Be aware that if you do this, if she then deletes your contacts from her device, they will also be deleted from yours and they will be lost.  For this reason, it's usually recommended that different users maintain separate iCloud accounts with separate IDs, which makes it easier for users to restore contacts from iCloud.

  • Is it possible to get music back off my iPhone?

I had someone work on my computer and he deleted all the music from it. Is there any way I can get my music off of my iPhone 3G? Also I have about 20gb of music on my ipod classic, can I get the music back to my computer?

iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, and iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
You can do the same with your iPod and if you have disk mode enabled with your iPod and you are manually managing music, you can manually transfer the music from your iPod to your iTunes library.

  • I have deleted tv shows i purchased from my ipad to have more space is it possible to get them back on my desktop?

i have deleted tv shows and books that i purchased from my ipad, i did not sync the old tv shows/ books on the desktop, but is it possible to re-download them?

For TV shows if you are in the US then yes, otherwise you'll have to re-buy them if you want them back. For ibooks yes (and not just in the US) as long as they are still in the store and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy/download them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • TS4147 Is there anyway possible to get contacts back that were not backed up on the iCloud?

When I updated my phone I had to erase my phone completely. It did not bring back all my contacts, therefore I'm guessing I didn't have the backed up on iCloud. It might be stretch but is there anyway I can get my old contacts from before the restore back?

Apple States that you should be able to restore from the most recent 3 back ups. if your contacts aren't in these, there isn't much you can do.

  • If a project is moved from the fcp events folder into the trash and emptied, is it possible to get it back?, If a project is moved from the fcp events folder into the trash and emptied, is it possible to get it back?

I had a fcp events folder on an external drive and moved it to the trash.  I then emptied the trash but I now need that project back.  Is this possibe at all!

As far as you are concerned the answer is most likely "NO".
Theoretically it is possible to retrieve trashed items assuming you have the technical expertise and equipment of the FBI or if you purchase expensive retrieval software.
Unless the project is of immense financial value it is probably best just to redo it.

  • After resetting my iphone I lost all my contacts. Is it possible to get them back?

The screen on my iphone3 stopped rotating some time ago. I broke my ankle so I have alot of time to figure out the problem. I hooked the phone to my computer for the  first time and downloaded the updates. I also reset my phone to the original settings which resulted in losing my pictures and contacts. Is there a way to retrieve my lost information? I did get the screen to start rotating.          Thanks for any help

have you not been using your phone as intended?  You should have been synching your contacts with iCloud, Outlook, or Address Book.
Synch your contacts back from one of those applications.
