Possible bugs in intel osx? (macbook pro)

I recently got a macbook pro with 10.4.6 installed. Today i've been trying to set up the desktop image as an album in iphoto. This was perfectly simple to do on my powerbook g4 running under 10.4.6, but seems to be increasingly difficult on the new machine. I ended up having to create a new folder on my harddrive with the images in that album and selecting that folder in the Desktop & Screen Savers dialogue because there was no way to select multiple images using the album. On my old machine I could select the album in itunes and make that the desktop image, and an iphoto selection folder would appear in the Desktop utility.
Also, I've noticed that many times (though not all the time) when i have images in iPhoto selected, I am unable to drag them around (for instance, if i want to put them in an album, or if i want to make a copy of them on my desktop)
Anybody else experiencing these problems?

I created a new album in iPhoto called Screensaver and then I just drag my favorite pictures into that album that I want to appear when the screensaver kicks in. Then I just have the Screensaver album selected in the screensaver prefs and it displays those pics.
I haven't noticed any problems dragging images around in iPhoto.

  • Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?

Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?
    What I currently have:
    Late-2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 (OSX Mavericks 10.9.5)
    2.5ghz Intel i7 quad-core
    16gb RAM, 1024gb SSD raid-0 (internal)
    Connecting to the internet through:
Apple Time Capsule 2TB (via ethernet)
    +
Time Warner Cable "Ultimate 100" (top speed)
I would basically like to be able to have my MacBook Pro on *at home* and connected to the internet via ethernet to the Apple Time Capsule.. and then be able to somehow connect and log in to my MacBook Pro, either through another computer or preferably, my iPhone 5s..
Mostly just interested in having accessibility to be able to make downloads, such as magnet links, while away from the computer.. and basically be able to come home to mostly finished or complete downloads.. Basically like how you can DVR/TiVo things from your iPhone and have it sync with your DVR/TiVo while away from home..
    Is this possible? Thank you!!

    Yes you can do this.
I would suggest you start with TeamViewer.com (free for personal use).
You will need to install TeamViewer on your Mac AND your iPhone.
The Mac version will need to be configured for unattended remote access.  You should practice before you leave the home.
There are other iPhone apps that can remotely access a Mac.  A lot depends on whether they can get past the home NAT router.  Be careful of apps that provide VNC access, but do not provide a way to get past the home router.  If you try one of these, make sure you test it away from your home WiFi network.

  • HT4736 Taking too long (2 minutes) to locate and download photos into Photo '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I checked and repaired HD permissions. Any ideas?

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

  • TS3297 Is it possible for itunes on my MacBook Pro to play songs off my networked WD external hard drive and sync to my iPhone? I prefer to not keep all my music on my laptop and I don't want to pay $25 a year to access my songs if I don't have to.

Is it possible for itunes on my MacBook Pro to play songs off my networked Western Drive external hard drive so I can sync to my Mac to my iPhone? I do not want to keep any music on my laptop and I don't want to pay $25 to itunes match a year to access my songs if I don't have to.

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • Booting from external hard drive on intel-based MacBook Pro

Good day everyone. I know similar questions were raised in this community, but I still have some questions.
I have MacBook Pro(late 2011) with OS X 10.7.5 and external hard drive with Ubuntu 13.04, from wich i can boot succefully on my PC. But MacBook Pro will not boot from my external drive, no matter which key/combination i use during restart.
After googling I found some answers to my initial question, how to boot from external hard drive
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1852633?start=0&tstart=0
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-boot-from-exte rnal-firewire-or-usb-drive.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1948
As I understand I need to format my external hard drive into GUID partition type and this will be enough to be able to boot from it on my mac?
With this new partition type, will I be able to install ubuntu again on my external drive?
Does GUID partition type supports NTFS, ext4 and FAT32, linux swap?(I use ntfs for big files, ext4 as partition for ubuntu and fat32, because i use windows, linux and osx)
Will I be able to boot from my pc from my external drive with this new partition type?
What are downsides, if any, to GPT?
here is info on my e-drive

    LowLuster wrote:
The only OS that will boot from an external drive is Mac OS X or maybe Linux. For OS X to be installed on any drive it need to be formatted Mac OS Extended and have GUID partition table.
As for Linux I'm not that familiar with it but again for a Mac to boot it need an EFI partition on the drive and I don't think that is possible with NTFS or FAT32 let alone the native Linux format.
Went to wiki to learn more on efi but found artice on uefi.
Operating system loaders are a class of the UEFI applications. As such, they are stored as files on a file system that can be accessed by the firmware, called EFI System partition (ESP). Supported file systems include FAT32, FAT16 and FAT12, and supported partition table scheme is GPT only. UEFI does not rely on a boot sector, although ESP provides space for it as part of the backwards compatibility.[26]
Here is FAQ on official uefi website.
Can UEFI Secure Boot be adopted and implemented by a variety of operating systems?
UEFI specifications are platform-independent, supporting multiple platforms and architectures. In addition, UEFI specifications are designed to promote cross-functionality, as well as to support broad adoption across multiple operating systems, including Windows as well as Linux-based operating systems. The specifications are robust and can potentially complement—or even advance—other distributions, such as Linux-based distributions.
And here is wiki article on GPT expaining OS support.
It is obvious both uefi and GPT are ok with Linux and file systems such as FAT32, ext4 and NTFS.
I guess there is no much difference(or is that the same thing?) between uefi and efi used in Macs.
In your answer to Stark Industries you said that mac can boot linux from external hard drive, well this is not the info i got of official website and it is still my question, because your answer is very inconclusive and your info is partially incorrect

  • Bug using iPhoto on Macbook Pro Retina

    Hi Guys,
    First post.
I have the new Macbook Pro Retina 13"
Whenever I use iPhoto, as soon as I go to another program and come back it takes me to "Last import" folder regardless of where I was.
Is there a fix for this bug? It's really annoying

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the new library doesn't work properly try this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
In either case your current library will be untouched for further testing if necessary.

  • AE is not possible to run on a macbook pro

I'm having problems with the trial version of After Effects CC on my macbook pro.
After installation I encounter this error:
The settings on my macbook are:
    Mac OS X 10.9.3
    Intel Core i5

    Intel HD Graphics 4000
Inform anyone know the solution to this problem?

As Rick says, you need to make sure CUDA isn't installed. People with this error popped up on these forums all the time when they would accidentally install a CUDA driver (migrating systems/upgrading, etc.)

  • Soundtracl Pro on 2 Ghz Intel Duocore MacBook Pro

Just got the update for the universal Versions of my Final Cut Studio package. Installed everything on my brandnew 2Ghz MacBook Pro, everything except Soundtrack Pro runs as it should. When I start Soundtrack I get a window that says "Machine not certified to run Soundtrack Pro" or something like that - I run Mac OS in german, so I have translated the message freely.
Anyone expierienced this? Do all the Pro Apps take extremely long to start up on your Intels as well?
    Thanks
    Florian

Are you sure you installed the Universal versions of the apps? In the Finder you could Get Info on Soundtrack and Final Cut, and make sure that you see "Kind: Application (Universal)" under General. I don't know if you could install the PPC versions of the applications, but I am sure they would seem very slow if they were running in Rosetta!
Also, you could post the full German error message. There might be another German speaker around that could help you.

  • Bug Yosemite avec un MacBook Pro Rétina 13" (Fin 2013)

    Bonjour,

    A bientot

  • My screen has marks made by the keyboard when closed. Possible design flaw (mid 2012 macbook pro retina)

My screen has marks made by the keyboard when closed. I think is because possible desing flaw. Is a macbook pro retina mid 2012. Maybe the secreen is very close to the keyboard when close. It is a soft mark, but I´m sure it´s because the keyborad because is the same shape.
    Thank you

Whether they replace just the screen, a subassembly, the whole top half of the computer, or the entire computer is entirely up to them, as is whether they replace with new or refurbished parts.
I would make sure I had at least one full backup of everything on my computer before taking it in. Two would be even better. Even if they don't replace the entire computer, something could happen during installation and testing of new parts.
Back when people really cared about the manufacturer of their screen (in the beginning of the Retina models, when one manufacturer had a bad run of screens), instructions for using Terminal commands to determine which you had circulated. I didn't bother to keep a copy of the one I used. A web search for "retina screen manufacturer" (without the quotes) should reveal as top hits several sites with very similar instructions.

  • FileVault Bug – set up my MacBook Pro 2010

Hey, I just wanted to set up my MacBook Pro (generation 2010) from scratch. I am currently running Mavericks without any major bugs. The thing is, I always had problems with my FileVault account. When I installed Mavericks there was the panel "former FileVault" and FileVault" in the theme "Security". I disconnected the old one, agreed to the new one, because first I always hat to enter my password twice for the old one and the new system. Now I wanted to boot from the DVD I got when I bought it. Odly, I've got two. 10.5.6 for "MacBook" and 10.5.7 for "13-inch MacBook Pro". I tried both. It wouldn't boot. Does anybody have an idea how?

    Elisabeth158,
if you have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, then its original grey Mac OS X Install DVD has either 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 on it. The grey installation DVDs are model-specific; neither your 10.5.6 MacBook DVD nor your 10.5.7 13-inch MacBook Pro DVD will work with a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Your 10.5.6 MacBook DVD will go with one of an Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook, an Early 2009 MacBook, or a Mid 2009 MacBook. Your 10.5.7 13-inch MacBook Pro DVD goes with a 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
