Possible change from CS3 to CS4?

I'm taking an internet class in Photoshop for scrapbookers at Jessica Sprague's site (very good, by the way, if any scrapbookers are looking at this). She is using CS3 to teach the course and I am using CS4 to take it.
Here's the discrepancy. When she draws a circle on an image by holding down shift/alt with the elliptical marquee tool, she starts the circle from the center of the circle but from the edge of the image. When she lets go of the mouse, her circle remains drawn and suspended out of sight off the image and she's able to move the circle around on the image. When I let go of the mouse in CS4, the selection commits itself to the image and I wind up with a fixed selection in the shape of a polygon with one completely rounded side. When I move the selection, the straight edges move with the curved edges, making it impossible for me to do what the teacher wants me to do. I found a workaround for it by moving the image temporarily onto a much bigger new file, but I--and other students in the class--are really curious about how to make this work as our teacher does. One of the other stumped students just suggested to me that this might be because we're working in CS4. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help; it is often a great comfort to know this forum is here!

Are you sure she isn't holding the Space Bar while she does this? That will do what you want if I am understanding your explanation correctly. The trick is to press and hold the space bar before you let up on the mouse button.

  • Shortcut and other changes from CS3 to CS4

Hi, first of all I think CS4 has some great features and improvements, and the reason Im posting is because I want to use it. Theres a few things im trying to do though that i used to in CS3, and havnt found how. Already went though a few CS4 online training videos and none.
So if you know please HELP, if you know if CS4 doesnt allow it anymore. Please let me know. many thanks!
    1. In curves, I use to toggle from one point in the curve to another with control + tab, how can I do this with CS4?
    2. In CS3 i turned off to have a white default mask with every adjustement layer. With CS4 i followed the same step to do this in the panel opstions, but they still keep appearing. They wont go!!
    3. In CS3 I used a lot to drag the cursor over the image and know where in the curve I will be affecting. In CS4 I cant seem to be able to do that but by turning on that new feature to drag the adjustement curve from the image (which is nice) but if its the only way to do this (not sure of this) how can I leave that new feature on by default? and not have to turn it on with every curve i create.
I will leave it here in the meanwhile.
Many thanks and your responses will be greatly appreciate it!
    cheers

    Hi, Jeff and Mark,
Many thanks for your responses, but so far my question remains unanswered. And that was the purpose of this post, not anything else.
I do use masks a lot. But most of the time, thats 90% of it, I use them in group sets, not the adjustment layer itself. I prefer it this way, and this is the way I worked on CS3.
I recently printed 110 prints for Magnum that is being exhibit in Germany, and Im currently working on the retouching for a Phaidon photo book. So its not like I started Photoshop last week. Although almost every day I learn something new. And Id like to have my adjustment layer masks on the group sets like in CS3. Nothing out of this world.
Is it possible with CS4 like CS3 or not? If it is, how? If not, darn, but I'll survive.
Those are my questions if anyone please.
    cheers

  • Annoying window maximize change from cs3 to cs4/5

When I hit the maximize button on an image window, it goes to full screen and I lose my top menu bar and side tool bar. Why the heck did they do this..who the hell wants this - why change the behaviour of the tab key?!! Its so annoying! Is there a way to get it back how it was? I want it to maximie to the available space inside the PS window, not the entire screen. I dont want a windowed or tabbed view in the available space.
    I've tried:
    CTRL-0
    double clicking the hand tool
    hitting "f" then "Tab"
..and they kind of get me there none of these ways are perfect. I'm a user since Version BETA, and this is hard to get used to. HELP! This is almost as annoying when they changed the key mappings and didnt provide a way to change it back. I sitll cant remembwe what key brush is.

Thanks for the replies. I have used the arrange windows feature. So lets say I was compiling elements from two psd files.. I'd tile them, or likely just have one next to each other. Then when I want to blow one up to maximize the available window space, I would normally just hit the maximize button on the window and start working, but when I do that now, I lose the menu bar and tool bar. I do have two 24" monitors and keep the layers and other sub tools and properties windows off to the right window. But I need the main tool bar on the left side - like its been for the last 14 years. I also need the menu bar.
So this is where it gets annoying. Why isn’t there an option to just maximize the window to the available space like it used to be? I either have to grab the window and drag it up to make it a tab.. or hit maximize button, hit F, then hit Tab, which sort of gets me there, but then I'm in a weird mode I have to back out of later when I want to see that other window in the background. They've added more clicks and user effort for what I can see as little gain. I'm changing between these modes all the time!
It’s cool they use tabs because well, hey Google and Mozilla introduced it so why not, but in the context of web browsing tabs may make sense, but for Photoshop its just annoying. I shouldn’t have to modify my deeply ingrained workflow to suit the needs of a new program feature. I hate when Adobe does this!! !'m considering uninstalling and going back to cs3.

  • Migrate actions from CS3 to CS4

    Hi,
I would like to migrate my actions from CS3 to CS4. The CS4 is a new install on a fresh Windows 7, from the CS3 settings I only have a backup of my disk before the new install. Of this backup I checked the "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Presets\Actions" folder but it is empty. In my CS3 I had many actions, sorted in different folders. The other presets (like for curves or the channel mixer) are there, so I am quite confident that my backup worked correctly.
Am I missing something here and can I find the actions of CS3 somewhere else or are they gone for good?
    Thanks and regards, Robert

Different folders as in different action sets in the Actions panel right? did you actually use the Save Actions command from the Actions panel menu? If you didn't save them then try copying this file: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings\Actions Palette.psp to the same location but with CS4 instead of CS3 in the path

  • How do I transfer plugins/actions from CS3 to CS4?

I am working on a newer computer for my wife. Her current computer is Windows XP Pro with Photoshop CS3, her new computer will be Vista Ultimate with CS4, both with default installation locations. I know she has alot of actions/presets/plugins she uses; my question is...
How do I transfer all of her actions/plugins from CS3 to CS4? Is there a folder I can just copy/paste?
Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

For actions it depends how they are saved.
The best thing is to save them in sets on the old computer in a folder of your choice. They can then be loaded from a copy of that folder on the new computer.
Third party plug-ins should be installed again because not all will work in 64-bit and you may need to get updates.

  • Copy favorites from CS3 to CS4

Is there a way to copy favorites, keywords, other settings from CS3 to CS4?
    Thanks,

    Hi Mogur203,
Sorry, but there is no way to copy your CS3 Favorites over to CS4. However you are able to copy your keywords over if they did not get imported during your first launch.
    1. Launch CS3, Click on the flyout menu in the keyword panel
    2. Select export, Save the text file
    3. Launch CS4, Click on the flyout menu in the keyword panel
    4. Select import, select the text file that you saved from CS3
This should complete the import of all the keywords from CS3 to CS4.
Please let me know what other settings you are referring to and I will let you know if you can copy them over or not. Please let me know if you have any other question

  • Getting error after administrator who upgraded from CS3 to CS4

    Hi,
We have had an administrator who upgraded from CS3 to CS4.
However, any of our other users still using CS3 now get the

“The website is being administered with a newer version
of Contribute. For more information contact this website's
    administrator."
Do you know any way around this issue?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
No they don't have to, at least I think so. If your
administror go to the menubar: Contribute>Administer
Websites> Choose the site you wish to set the settings for. In
'Compatibility' choose 'Transition Mode' and klik OK. This should
allow the other users to keep working in their version of

I say 'should'... Read my entry in the general discussion

  • Exporting site info from CS3 to CS4

How do I export my "remote info" under "manage sites" from CS3 to CS4? I have about 30 sites under "manage sites" and would hate to have to dig up all the passwords after the upgrade. I used the "export" button in CS3, but it didn't bring in the remote info.

    1.  In CS3, open Site Manager
    2.  Select the sites you want to Export
    3.  Click Export and select a KNOWN location into which to write the *.ste files
    4.  Open CS4.
    5.  Open Site Manager
    6.  Click IMPORT, browse to and select the site files you just exported and click OK.
Such fundamental questions as this are always answered in DW's F1 Help.  You'd have been done an hour ago if you had looked there.

  • Custom Metadata Panels from CS3 to CS4.

I have install CS4 on my Vista Ultimate PC. It runs like a dream. However there is now a new format for the custom metadata panels. I have two panels that I created in CS3 that I need to convert to the new format. Is there an easy way to do this?
The CS3 files are txt files that all I had to do was copy to the proper directory and they appeared. Thanks.
    Fred

    Thanks Gunar,
I already had my custom XMP panel for my server product for InDesign. I tried to create a CS4 compatible panel on MacPro (Mac OS X 10.5.5 3GB RAM) using every possible method from the XMP FileInfo SDK pdf - it didn't work. The panel did show up in the dialog, but not the fields. Not only this, all fields also disappeared from some other panels. After I removed my custom panel, everything went back to normal.
    I tried:
-Generic panel method - the fields didn't show up
-The Flex SDK method: when I run
    ant built.xml
I got the "Target "build.xml" does not exist in the project "TestPanel"." error (I checked many times - all the files were where they're supposed to be, and I run it from the correct directory).
-I downloaded Flex Builder, followed all the steps - the fields didn't show up, and fields in other panels disappeared.
The idea of building the panel interface interactively is great - I hope it will ever work.
Any ideas of why it didn't work for me?
While we're on this, I think that the new tabbed interface for the File Info dialog is a huge step back. You already had a great interface, with the list of panel names on the left side - which is easy to use and is standard through many Adobe dialogs.
The multi-tab approach for many items proved to be inefficient long time ago. Right now you created a dialog that works like a dilaog in QuarkXPress 4 - what's the point?
To support the new tabbed interface, you had to introduce TWO new "arrow" controls, none of which is user-friendly, and which make a simple task of choosing a panel extremely confusing.
The new feature of changing panel position by dragging is great, but it could be also achieved through the side list approach.
Bottom line: could you please restore the side list approach. I think it will help advance the XMP technology further and encourage people to actually use it , instead of doing exactly the opposite.

  • Is it time to upgrade from CS3 to CS4?

I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4.  I edit full HD XD CAM EX and Cineform 25p.   The reason I have not yet switched to CS4 is because I am waiting for the bugs to be worked out.  I am now checking in to see how things have moved forward on that end.  Is it worth it to upgrade or should I stick with CS3 for now?

I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4.
What is stopping you from trying it out? CS3 and CS4 can peacefully coexist on the same system. Given your decisiveness shown in the past, only you can decide and you have the means to make a decision. OTOH, I would not be surprised I you only make your decision when CS5 has been on the market for over a year.
Your question has about the same value as someone saying:
    "I have a Beamer 530 from 2004 and a Beamer 530 from 2009. Should I be driving the 2009 version?"

  • Art board changes from CS3 to CC?

We are updating our workflow, and with it, software.  Going from CS3 to the creative cloud. For years we have stuck to CS3 as our downstream customers were slow to update and it was beneficial to provide the product in an older format usable to the broadest user base. Now we are upgrading to CC and I'm experiencing difficulty translating older Illustrator documents to Creative Cloud.
My understanding of the Art board is that it defines the live matter area of the artwork. Along with the Zero Zero point, this would serve as the starting point for image setters. When I preview the translated documents, the art board and the coordinates change. when I distill an eps into a pdf, i get a totally different result than when I save as a PDF within the program. Ive also experinced the zero zero point changing simply by opening the document again. This is making production very difficult as it seems like its not stable.
Anyone experience this in CC and is there a fix for it? See screen grabs below:
This is the way the document appears in Illustrator, notice the zero zero point.
When the document is distilled, the art board shrinks:

    LTU,
how do I fix it so its consistent?
I believethe following ways still work:
    A) Install and run the script in the OP of this thread,http://forums.adobe.com/thread/890507?tstart=30
    or
    B) Manually change the relevant preference settings as follows:
    0) Close down Illy (you can only change the preference file with Illy closed);
    1) Find and open the AIPrefs (Win speak) or Adobe Illustrator Prefs (Mac speak) file withe a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit; the preference file is a (hidden) file in the (hidden) folder Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings
2): Find and change the following two bits of code:
    /isRulerOriginTopLeft 1 >>> /isRulerOriginTopLeft 0 (change 1 to 0)
    /isRulerIn4thQuad 1 >>> /isRulerIn4thQuad 0 (change 1 to 0)
This is a global change so you only have to do it once (just as you can undo it once).
You may find the folder as described in <em><strong><a href="http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Move the folder</span></a></strong></em>.
Also, it doesn't explain the discrepancy between Distiller and saving as a PDF within CC.
I have no clue about that one, I am afraid. I hope someone else has.
    Someone?
