Possible confliction with external hard drive?

Hi guys, I'm sort of new here, but I could really use some help.
I love my iPod (30 gig Video), I've had it for just over a year, but last week it all of a sudden started screwing up on me. I'm sorry it's such a lengthy explaination, but I haven't been able to find help anywhere else... If you don't feel like reading it, essentially my iPod seems to be conflicting with my external hard drive.
I keep all my music on a 150gb external hard drive since my laptop's 30 gigs barely has any room left over with all the programs and photos I have on it. iTunes has worked fine in the past with playing/syncing music from an external hard drive but all of a sudden it's decided that iPod and Hard Drive don't mix.
When I have my hard drive plugged in by itself, everything is normal, and iTunes can play the music fine. Though once I plug my iPod in, iTunes and the whole computer freezes up. I get the usual "Do Not Disconnect" message on the iPod, and it seems to be doing something, but everything on the computer just stops. I can click the start menu, I can click the close button on iTunes, nothing happens... UNTIL I unplug my iPod. Then everything unfreezes and whatever buttons I clicked while the screen was frozen do their appropriate action. If I had clicked to close iTunes it would then close iTunes... If I closed iTunes while the iPod is plugged in (which does nothing), then unplug the iPod causing iTunes to actually close, I get a message saying that the iPod needs to be reformatted to work with Windows and I should restore the iPod within iTunes to solve that problem.
At the time, I hadn't tried the iPod alone, without the hard drive plugged in (since I keep the hard drive plugged in all the time), so I figured it was a problem with the iPod, rather than a problem with the hard drive.
So I took the "restore" idea, and went to my friend's computer, which is running Vista. He has iTunes, and his computer is fine. I plug my iPod into it, iTunes opens up, things work great. So the problem didn't seem to be with my iPod. I took the opportunity of having my iPod in a working iTunes environment on my friend's computer, and I restored my iPod, clearing all the songs off of it, which is not really a big deal, since all my songs are on my ext. hard drive anyway. I took my iPod back to my computer, and nothing changed, I still had that problem, and I then realised that the problem only existed while my hard drive was plugged in.
It was after I restored it that I realised if I unplug my hard drive, and have my iPod plugged in alone, everything works fine. It opens up iTunes, it's recognised by My Computer, things are normal, except for the fact that I can't do anything, since all my music is on my ext. hard drive, so I get to look at a whole library of songs with little exclaimation marks beside them. Syncing didn't do anything except transfer the handful of songs from my library that AREN'T located on my external hard drive to my iPod, and of course, once I tried plugging my hard drive in... frozen.
I managed to figure out that if I started iTunes with my hard drive plugged in (so iTunes would know that the songs are in the right location), then unplugged the hard drive, plugged the iPod in (so iTunes would recognise it), then plugged the hard drive back in, things would work alright, though when I tried syncing it, it went painfully slow and stopped after about 3 albums, and this process hasn't worked since, it just freezes up again.
I know I could just copy songs slowly to my computer, and sync them to my iPod from the computer rather than the hard drive, but that would take ages, and I'd like to have the problem fixed rather than to have to go through that process any time I wanted to change what's on my iPod.
So that's my problem. I've followed the "5 R's" that the support here seems to swear by, I have tried unistalling and reinstalling iTunes twice, I've uninstalled both iTunes and the iPod updater stuff, and then installed everything clean from the CD that came with the iPod. I've tried renaming the drive letters of my ext. hard drive and my iPod in case there was some sort of confliction there, nothing seems to have worked. I don't think I changed anything with my computer that would cause this change (I ever restored Windows to a date before this problem occurred), and as for the update to iTunes 7.4.1.2, I didn't update it until after this problem started, so it wouldn't have been caused by the update.
I hope that made sense... If anyone can give me some help as to how I can get my iPod back working on my computer I'd be incredibly grateful and thanks in advance!
If anyone knows what's going on, it's probably somebody here

This sounds like more of a Windows specific iPod problem. You may get better responses if you posted it in that specific section of the forums.

  • Issues with External Hard Drives

I hope this is the right forum for this one - please give me a steer if not! I've also posted it in 'Dock and Finder', but this forum seems equally appropriate, if not more so.
I'm getting repeated issues with External Hard Drives, including ones that I have been using successfully for months/years, suddenly failing to mount and then becoming 'unknown device' through the firewire branch of 'About This Mac'.
I've just bought a new hard drive on the grounds that the others had somehow failed, and the same problems are emerging. I decided to Repair Permissions on my iMac's internal drive, and am copying the results below, from repair runs conducted yesterday and today:

Many problems with the 10.5.7 update have been fixed by a Restart.
If that doesn't help, something may have gone wrong with the update. Download and install the "combo" update, from: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If that doesn't help, try running the Apple Hardware Test, on the disc that came with your computer.
    1. Disconnect all external devices (including the Ethernet cable) except the keyboard and mouse.
    2. Insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer.
    3. Restart while holding down the "C" key. When the list of available startup volumes appears, click Apple Hardware Test and the right arrow.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen comes up (after a moment), follow the on screen instructions.
    5. If it detects a problem, an error code will be displayed. Make a note of it.

  • Blue screen on start up with external Hard drive connected

On start up Imac freezes on light blue screen with external hard drive connected via firewire. Starts okay without hard drive connected. I have repaired the drive with no resolution of the problem.

You might try starting the iMac in "verbose mode" by holding down command-V when booting:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
That could show you some messages that might explain the problem.
Another approach is to launch the Console utility and look for messages dated around the time of a hang.

  • Backup problems with external hard drive

I bought a WD passport external hard drive and copied my itunes library onto a file there. I re-set the location of the library on itunes to the drive on the external hard drive. So far I have not deleted anything from my computer hard drive. However, when I am in itunes and click onto a song, nothing comes out of my speakers. Everything looks normal, as if the track is playing, but nothing is happening. I tried buying a new track off of itunes online, downloaded it, and installed it on my ipod; it plays fine, on my ipod, but will not play on the computer. Something is obviously wrong, but I can't figure out what has happened. Any help out there?
    Thanks!

It sounds to me like your iMac is on it's last legs....at least the internal hard drive. If you can't make a new Time Machine backup I would advise you replace your iMac as soon as possible.
Assuming your three-week old backup is sound you should have no problems moving everything over to a new Mac. I would recommend you use the Setup Assistant that appears when you start up the new Mac (and note: It only appears the first time you start the new Mac; you can move everything over later on via Migration Assistant, but you may see issues with accounts if you opt for that route).
I don't think you need the Genius Desk for Setup Assistant. You only have to power up the new iMac, answer a few questions....select "....From Another Disk..." When it asks how you want to move everything over....connect up your Iomega external drive...and wait for it to finish. (Could take several hours depending on the amount of data you're moving).
    A couple of notes:
    1.  If your Iomega is a Firewire drive you'll need a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter to connect it to your new iMac.
    2.  If you need to load CDs or DVDs remember the new iMacs don't contain an optical drive. You would need to get an Apple SuperDrive or third part external burner if you need that functionality.
I'm puzzled by the comment made in Seventy One's post questioning the reliability of the new iMacs. I upgraded from a 24" early 2008 model to a 27" model and everything works flawlessly. I hardly ever see the beachball anymore.

  • Mac air with external hard drive - not being found on Finder, Time Machine, Migration Assistant

I have been using an external drive (Imation Apollo) to access only, old files from previous computer (PC) on a new Mac Air.  I had not transferred them across to new computer (didn't want to do that)  just accessing them from the HD.  It had been working fine until recently.  Each time the external drive had been connected Time Machine would come up and ask if i wanted to use this drive for back ups, and I always chose 'Decide later'.  So, as yetI hadn't as yet configured Time Machine to do back ups.
Recently I noticed that the extrnal HD was no longer showing up on Finder.  Slight panic as i have 5 or 6 yrs of work saved on that HD
Further investigations - it's also not showing up either on on Disk Utility, or on Migration Assistant.
    I've done the following:
Tried HD in each of different USB ports  - made no difference, HD still not showing up
Tested different Hubs in each port with HD attached - no difference HD not showing up
Tried USB flash drives in the USB ports - These are working fine and show up on finder
Tried the HD on other comptuters (a PC though, don't have access to another mac to do this test)- working fine, the HD is showing up and is accessable
Interrogated the Console logs to try to see if the act of attaching the HD creates a log entry - couldn't find anything
Rebooted computer via shut down, power disconnect - no difference
Reset PRAM - no difference still not showing up
Reset SMC - no differnce still not showing up
So I think I have established that all the USB ports are functioning correctly and able to access other external drive devices, using hubs with external powersource is not the issue, identified that the external hard drive is working OK, and it appears that the Mac itself is functioning normally.
What would be the reason the Mac now does not allow this specific external HD to be identified and accessed.  The only possible things I can think of are
if I had in fact pressed 'Do not use' when Time Machine asked 'do you want to use this drive for back ups'.  Would that mean that the Mac now totally rejects this HD from being a source of accessible files - I hope not!
I also think that my husband may have disconnected the hard drive from my computer to access some stuff and he just yanked it out rather than use the safe eject method.  Could this create an issue?  The Hard drive works fine on his PC.
Why is my Mac Air now rejecting this HD and what can I do to access my historical files now.
Any assistance anyone can provide would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Anna

I can't answer why it isn't accessing it, but I have a slightly related issue w my back up drive starting to get noisy.
Realizing that redundancy is safety for critical data.  I talked to my brother about my situation the other day & he said he has 3 small Western Digital portable HDs that he rotates for backup. He even keeps 1 in the safe deposit box.
I have read for some time that we should have multiple back ups & also have our critical stuff backed up off site. Amazon HD reviews had a woman telling about how she was very backed up on multiple computers & hard drives, but they were robbed or burgeled & all of them were stolen including her thesis that was on the computers.
Hard drives aren't that expensive. I just bought a new Western Digital 1 TB drive for $89.99. I plan to use it to back up the Seagate that is getting noisy & then maybe alternate them.
Also, when I came back to Mac, I moved practially all of my documents to Mac. I think I just dragged & dropped or something. Photos, Office, & pdfs do fine that way. & then you could back them up to a couple of different external drives & remove from your MacBookAir.
Unfortunately I think most of us do not back up until crisis & then it may be too late.
Also use Time Machine. For the 1st time in my computer life, my computer is well backed up--although now realizing the need for redundancy so will start backing up to at least 2 different HDs alternatly.
So, not sure why it isn't working & hopefully you have come up w a solution by now.
I think what I would do in a situation like this, since you can access it on the Windows machine would be to transfer the data to the Windows machine & then transfer it back to a different back up.
I'm looking into backing up what I still have in Windows using a thumb flash drive. I think it should all fit ok now that they have the larger drives & I don't have very much left in Windows format.

  • Target disk mode with external hard drive?

    Hi all,
I have a very annoying problem. I've just bought a new Mac Mini, previously I had an iBook G4 600 (about 6 years old). My Mac mini works perfectly, but...
    1) I don't want to copy everything over from the iBook with Migration Assistant, I'd rather pick and choose what to copy. Is buying a firewire cable and using Target Disk mode the only quick way to do this?
    2) I was intending to transfer files using my external HD. But the Mini doesn't recognise my poor old external drive. However, all my iTunes music is on the external HD. It seems by far the fastest way to get the music off (as long as I can't get the mini to recognise the HD)would be to boot the iBook in Target Disk mode then somehow be able to read from the external HD as well. Is this possible? If not, what on earth can I do??
    Thanks in advance,
    Suz

Okay after testing, I am ready to conceded that you are correct that you can daisy chain an external drive and a TDM Mac together and have them mount both drives.
However. unless Suz proves me wrong (Which is always a possibility), I do not think that it will fix her initial problem. Since all's TDM does is allow the computer to act as a Firewire device, so it and the external hard drive, are simply 2 FW devices on a serial bus. If the new Mac Can't mount the external drive from the old computer, I doubt it would mount it with the old computer connected to it. (Unless there is just some funky thing going on that having another firewire device on the bus corrects?)
Let's see if it shows up in System profiler, and if it shows up there how does Disk Utility see it?
Have you also tried resetting the NVRAM?
Also just to be on the safe side, do you have another Firewire device that you can connect, to let us know that the port on the new mac is actually working?

  • Issues with external hard drive

hello, i recently purchased a seagate external hard drive 2TB. i am trying to copy videos onto the external hard drive from my macbook( mac osx version 10.6.3 but the files wont copy. i checked the details of the external hard drive, formatted for windows nt file system (NTFS). also, when i click info on the external hard drive and click on sharing and permissions it says "You can only read". What do i need to do to use the external hard drive with my mac. I should note that i want to interchange the external hard drive both with my mac and windows if possible. can anyone point me in the right direction... thanks

Macs can't write to NTFS, only read. Here's a post with some background information on your problem if you really need to use this with Windows: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11547287 As you can see there's a few potential solutions. How big are these files? If under 4GB you could use FAT32. Note that sometimes file copying to and from FAT, especially large files, seems to be an issue I see not infrequently on these fora.
If you don't need to use it with Windows, or can install software on the PC to allow it to read Mac drives, then format the drive to Mac Extended.

  • Time capsule with external hard drive

My wife and I just recently became an all Mac family and I am looking into backing up our files.  We have approximatly 1 TB of Photos and 1 TB of Music/Movies.  We are photographers (well, my wife is, I just take blurry photos) and so we expect the size of our Photos to grow.
We both have Macbook Pros and a mac mini (1 TB of storage).  Connected to our mini is a an 8 TB external hard drive currently set up as a Raid 10, so I have effectivly 4 TB storage with 4 TB of back up.  My plan was to buy an Air Port Extreme to replace our 4 year old wireless router, and I see some of the Air Port Extreme's have time capsul storage built in.
My question is, our photos, music and movies will be kept on my EHD, which is mirrored and will make its own back up.  Is it worth buying an Air Port Extreme with time capsule to back up everything?  We will primarly be keeping programs word documents and home school stuff on the Mini and everything on our Macbook Pros will be files we take from the EHD.
Also, should I plug the EHD into the Air Port Extreme or the Mini?
I formated the EHD on the mini, so it is set up as journaled, not FAT32.

I would quibble with you on the use of the word backup.. Mirror yes.. you have a mirror.. but that does not represent a backup. But you also suggest later that you have a separate backup as well .. if so you have not listed what exactly this is.
The issue is if you delete a file.. it is deleted from the array.. if you manage to corrupt a file.. it is corrupted in the array.. worse yet.. if you corrupt a library.. very real possibility with the way apple stores files.. and I do hope your are storing original RAW versions.. so the library will then be corrupted in both sections of the array.
How is this connected to the mini? I hope it is a recent mini and using thunderbolt??
The best backup imho is a 4TB drive plugged into the array by usb or whatever is the fastest port it has.. esata would be great.. expensive but thunderbolt even better. Does the software with the array have some inbuilt backup?? They are usually the best way to do it. I would even consider a second cheap USB stored offsite.. friends house. Thieves love those big disk arrays.. they are worth a lot of money.. and they collect your TC/AE along with the rest.
Now all this might be already part of what you are doing so please take it simply that you didn't list it.

You can use Time Machine in the notebooks to do a backup of the current configuration of them. Without needing to do the backup of the EHD which is really too big to do effectively. TM is very good at keeping incremental backups.
A Time Capsule is good value considering the price of the hard disk now.. so you can buy an Extreme and run it with USB drive.. but the TC with inbuilt drive is a better option in that the drive speed of the internal far superior to the usb2 drive.
The new AC models are still somewhat buggy.. I think I would wait a bit for Apple to get their act together.. a few months probably. Of course I only see the people with issues here.. but the firmware is still immature.
I read a review recently by a guy I respect on our local forum.
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2125865
Compared to the Asus N66U model.. the AE wasn't even in the same class. And that is not AC but just 900mbps (so called) N wireless. That the AE was totally outclassed is somewhat of a surprise.. they are basically identical.. the chipset both use is standard broadcom. That means Apple has tried to do funny stuff instead of sticking with the broadcom OEM linux firmware.. they have to rewrite it in NetBSD.. and this is going to take some time to debug.
For now you can use TM to network drive,, just as easily as to a TC.
    See http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/
This is plainly opinionated.. and others might be in better position to post.. so go ahead and tear me to shreds.. but I would take great care.. before leaping at new edge technology.. unless you like the bleeding edge.

  • Using iPod with external Hard Drive connected to laptop

Is there a way to use the iPod video and an external hard drive connected to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop at the same time? I can use one or the other but not both. When both are connected using the usb ports on the back of the laptop, the iPod is not recognized, the message pops up saying unknown device. I do have the laptop connected to the power outlet. I have no problem using both when I am connected to the usb ports on the docking station at work, only when I have the stand alone laptop at home. I am using a 250GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive.
I found an article on CNet that suggested updating the bios and laptop software. I did this and still have the same issue.

You might have a drive letter conflict.
Both USB devices might be trying to use the same drive letter, and they're sort of "fighting" with eachother over who gets the letter assigned.
Try changing the drive letter of one of your devices.
You can use this article as a reference for changing the drive letter.

  • New Apple User - Trouble with External Hard Drive

I am not very good with computers so hopefully this is a simple task. I just purchased my first mac, a MacBook for college. I bought a Seagate FreeAgent 160 GB drive with the intent of using it for time machine back ups and also for storing my music. I am wondering how or if this is possible.
    So far I have:
    - Transferred all my music from my PC to the hard drive no problem.
    - I tried to set up Time Machine it said I had to delete everything from the Seagate drive in order to use it.
    - I then copied all my files off of the hard drive to my Macbook's HD.
    - Found out I also need to reformat my Seagate drive to Mac format.
Now I am wondering how to go about all of this and find out if its possible to store my music files on my hard drive as well as use it to for TM. I was thinking I can just move all my music back to the Seagate after TM erases it...would that work or is TM back-ups the only thing you can have on a drive?
    Thank you!

    Larko,
Generally speaking, you'll need an external hard drive with a capacity that is at least twice the size of the space being used on your internal hard drive. So, if you only have around 30 GBs of data on your new Macbook, you'll need at least 60 GBs for Time Machine. I'm going to state, though, that you'll probably end up using something more like 50 GBs on your Macbook's hard drive, so plan on using around 100 GBs for Time Machine.
Now, what you'll need to do first is format the external drive using Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility). In Disk Utility's "source list" at the left side of the window, select your external drive (not the named "volume" that will appear indented below it), then switch to the "Erase" tab. Erasing the entire hard drive will re-write the partition map, using the Apple "GUID" partition scheme (required for use with Time Machine).
If you want to store additional files on the external, that's OK. However, it is recommended that instead of storing both your Time Machine backup and your "personal" files on the same volume, that you partition the drive with 2 partitions. This will allow you to store the Time Machine backup in isolation on its own volume, and your "personal" files on the second. Disk Utility will handle this, too. Instead of erasing, switch to the "Partition" tab, use the pull-down menu to select 2 partitions, adjust the sizes according to your needs, then click "Partition."
I recommend that you size the first partition (for use with Time Machine) at 100 GBs, and the second with the remainder (which will end up being about 40 GBs).
You can certainly store that 10 GBs of music separately, but wouldn't it be best to import it into iTunes? If you do import it, or if it is kept on your Macbook in some other place, it will be backed up by Time Machine.
    Scott

  • Trouble with external hard drive and disk repair

So I save my music and photos to an external hard drive. The drive is partitioned to also be the back up for my Time Machine. I live in an old house with the electricity for my MacBook Pro and the external hard drive coming from a wall plug which drapes scrape over when opening and closing, occasionally moving the plugs to the point of cutting off the electricity. Sometimes when that happens, the MacBook Pro won't read the external hard drive and I have to restart the computer for it to read the HD.
Well, this seems to have happened again, only this time it wasn't reading the HD when restarted. I Opened the Disk Utility and did a verify disk, and was told that I couldn't save anything to the drive, but to access the files that were on there. So I attempted to do a disk repair. What happens at that point is instead of getting the solid blue line indicating the repair is happening, I get the barber pole blue line indicating it's trying to access the HD to begin repair. This goes on for hours at a time without the repair taking place.
Can anyone out there give me a "for Dummies" overview of how to get the Disk Utility to repair things?
    Thanks.

What I was trying to tell you is that all the music and photos that are on the same drive as your Time Machine backup must also be backed up elsewhere. Unlike all the stuff on your primary (internal) hard drive, those photos and music are not backed up at all unless you have copies of them on a different drive. If your Time Machine hard drive should fail before you do that, they'll all be lost. So copy all the music and photos to your second external hard drive as soon as you are able to do so.
I generally consider the nuisance of backing up extra hard drives to other extra hard drives burdensome and annoying enough so that I always upgrade my primary (internal) hard drive whenever I begin to run short of space on the one I'm using. Now that it's possible to get 750GB and 1TB internal drives for MBPs, I'll get one of those as soon as my present 250GB drive fills up to about 80% of its capacity. I don't want to lug around an external drive in order to have all my stuff with me when I'm away from my home or office — I want it all on my internal drive, and I want to be able to back all of it up at once to an external drive of the same or a larger size. At least until I outgrow a 1TB drive, and I think that will be a while.

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
important files that we are unable to access now.
I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
"If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
the external drive back in to your new computer. "
Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".

  • Error code 36 (problems with external hard drive)

I have just upgraded to Yosemite and am now having major problem with my external western digital hard drive.  I cannot create new folders and when I hit command N I get error code 36.  I also cannot move files from one folder to the next.  When I try to move them I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because a file of that name already exists" and that simply isn't true.  None of the files' names exist in the other folder.

Ok, It appears to be the fault of Western Digital.  I ejected the hard drive and then plugged it back in and it said that the drive was broken but I could still read the files and it told me to save the files on another disk and reformat.  So it was just a coincidence that I upgraded to Yosemite at the same time that my external hard drive broke.

  • IS it possible to share external hard drive Mac To Mac, over a PC network,

I would like to explain this situation in it's own post so it's clear. I am at my brother's house (PC user) and both my wife and I are Mac users who are on the network. I have an external hard drive which is plugged directly into my wife's Macbook. I am trying to access it from my Macbook pro. This is my first time sharing and this is what I have done:
I went into "sharing" on her Macbook and turned file sharing on.
I added the mounted drive as a 'shared folder' and made everyone able to read and write.
Under 'options' I checked all of the boxes, including AFT, SMB and FTP (was I suppose to do this?)
Now, when I am on my Macbook Pro I look at the network and I see the PC network server, and her Macbook there (along with another weird network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", which I'll get to in a minute)
When I click on her computer and connect, I see the folders there which I've previously been able to share.
However, there is no external drive to be seen, even though it is mounted on her desktop of her Macbook downstairs.
When I go back and connect to this strange network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", however, I see again all the folders that I see when I click on my wife's Macbook folder AND the external hard drive..which is great...BUT, why can't I see this when I click on her Macbook folder? I did notice too that the icon is a PC icon for "Mac001ff3cdf6ff" when I click on 'more info, says "PC server".
Does this mean that the only way for me to access the external hard drive is through a PC server and this is the 'long way around' to get into the external drive? And why can't I connect directly from my wife's Macbook icon in the network folder?
Help please! Thank you. I hope this is more clear.

Is there anyone out there who has had success with sharing an external hard drive over a network from Mac to Mac? I just can't figure this out! It's so weird. When I look in the network places I see the icon for my wife's computer, and the PC ones of my brother in law's drives connected to the network. And ONE of those PC icons (you know, the one with the blue screen of death on them?) is labeled with "mac934ffsg" or something similar. I've been experimenting and when I add the hard drive in "shared", or if I add another folder in 'shared' on her computer it is THIS icon in the network that is updated.
Does anybody come close to my situation? Is there anyone sharing a couple different Macs over a network set up with PC's?
    This is driving me batty...
