Possible consolidation incompatability between Vista and OSX ?

I want to use the same library with my iTunes sessions in Vista and OSX.
The library is located on an external HD.
iTunes is configured on both platforms to keep music organized. I used the consolidate feature to initially move the music from the OSX partition to the external HD. No problem there.
But then when I pointed my Vista session of iTunes to the new library, it wanted to organize the music again. Assuming it would not do much since I had just consolidated from the OSX side, I allowed it to proceed. Now most of the music on the OSX session has exclamation points, indicating that the music had been moved and the pointers are lost.
Is there an incompatibility between consolidation methodologies between OSX and Vista versions of iTunes? Is it not possible for me to have iTunes from differences operating systems manage the same library?
I appreciate any help with this...

So if I turn off "keep organized", how do I in fact keep things organized as I rip CD's from both platforms?
When you rip a CD, iTunes will put the tracks in proper "organized" (Artist/Album) location. However, the second iTunes will not know it is there. You can either (a) add the new files manually to the second iTunes, via File > Add Folder to Library, or (b) run a 3rd party folder-watching program such as iTunes Folder Watch that will add them automatically as they appear. Disclaimer: I have not personally used that program, so read up and make sure you are happy with it.

  • Powerpoint format problems between Vista and OSX using Parallels

I've intalled Parallels and it mostly works great. The exception is Powerpoint and trying to go back and forth between working on a doc in Windows and working on the same doc in the OSX version.
Formatting between the two versions is not compatable. For instance, one user changing the doc in Apple creates a formatting mess when the doc is then opened in Windows.
Are there any patches that solve this problem?

Since PowerPoint is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33607053> rather than an Apple forum.

  • HT5887 Why doesn't AirDrop work between iOS and OSX?

Apple has almost always never fail to seamlessly integrate its devices, until now? I understand that there is iCloud for content sharing between devices. However, AirDrop was introduced as a simpler way for users to not only share contents between their own devices but as well as other users. I understand that the logic behind AirDrop was practiced by windows users since the creation of modem, though it requires many complex steps and compatibility checks to achieve a simple logic. (and Windows never really bothered with perfecting it over all these years, its improved, still buggy)
My question is, why can't we share contents between iOS and OSX? Everytime I need to transfer some files/content, the quickest way I could think of is to send an email to myself. Just the other day I tried to have my colleague AirDrop a file from his 5S to my MBP. I told him with great confidence that this tech existed long ago, and finally Apple decide to kick some DOS *** and launch a super simple version. And that it should by right work with any device with BT and/or WiFi, but knowing Apple, it would only be for their own products. Not in my wildest dreams it didn't work cross OS.
Forget the embarassment, I want to be pampered by this seamless technology. I want the type of exclusiveness with my fellow family and friends of which majority are Apple lovers. I want to regain the confidence that whenever I step out of my room, whichever device I carry/left out, I can do/resume/engage everything as long as I carry an Apple device.
Music, Videos, E-mails, Docs, Images, iMessages, are all checked. So why not Content Sharing?

    Hi all,
Would you know whether there is an incompatibility between iPad2 and outlook 2010 calendar? I can sync outlook appointmens down to the device but not up to the computer calendar. The same occurs with my iPhone 4, can sync appointments down to the device, but not back up to the computer. Any help appreciated!

Most computer's USB ports do not have enough power to charge iPads while they are active.  An iPad will charge while in sleep mode, but very slowly.

i'm trying to create a network between a Vista desktop and my Macbook Pro for files and printer sharing.
after lots work with setting on Vista, I now can enter in MacbookPro folders from Vista. the problem is by Mac side: i can't find the printer connect on Vista (and shared), and the icon of PC don't appear on Finder, so i can't enter on Vista's folders. the problem with file sharing is strange, cause only one time, today, icon of PC was appeared on Finder (come back to Stop of Mac)..... i've traied with the same method another times, without success...

I have limited knowledge but will try to help you as I have battled through this myself recently...You will lose nothing if you give it a try!
In System Preferences open the Sharing folder. Check the boxes to enable 'File' & 'Printer' Sharing. In the same open window select 'Options'.. Here I have Share files and folders using AFB and (importantly) also Share files and folders using SMB. - 'on' should be checked and 'Account' should i believe be the name assigned to your Macbook. - select 'Done' and then also close the 'sharing' window in sys preferences to take you back to the desktop.
In 'Finder' select the 'Go' option in the toolbar. Select connect to server from the drop down menu. You now need to enter the server address which will be the name of your Vista Pc - enter as follows: smb://(your vista name).. you may have to also enter the password for the Vista machine if it is configured in this way. ( It has been a while since I completed this so a little rusty here!)
If you have entered the correct information when you hit 'Connect', your Macbook should find your Vista desktop that has previously not been appearing in your Macbook 'Sharing' section - this was the issue that I was originally experiencing. You should now see the Vista machine in the Sharing section of your Macbook.
If this has been successful to here... This will enable access to try to solve the printer sharing problem? I think this one is beyond me as there are so many different configurations/installation options dependent upon the type of printer and network configurations.
It is possible to configure your Macbook to automatically find your Vista machine at startup if it is not found as a matter of course, which I perceive to be the case here... Try this to automate connection at startup..
Go to Sys Preferences and sect 'Accounts' you may have to enter your password to initiate changes. Making the assumption that you are connected now to your Vista machine and it is showing in the 'Shared' section of 'Finder'- select the 'Login Items' option and then select the '+' under where it states 'To hide an application when you log in etc etc.
From the window that opens you will now select your Vista machine from the left hand folders menu. when done click 'Add' and close windows to return to your desktop. Re-start the Macbook to check whether the Vista machine will now load to the Mac automatically at startup.
I hope this works for you as it has for me - The non discovery of the vista machine by the Mac was driving me round the bend

  • Is in PI7.1 possible asynchronous communication between SOAP and ABAPProxy?

    Hi,
when method execute_asynchronous has disapeared since XI/PI 7.1, is
there still way how to use ABAP proxy in asynchronous way?
We need to build asynchronous connection SOAP->PI->ABAP_Proxy.
In PI, both interfaces are defined as asynchronous (outbound for SOAP and
    inbound for ABAP Proxy).
Despite of this fact, when message is sent, it is processed
    synchronous way.
I have set breakpoint in my implementation of method for ABAP Proxy
message processing. When message is sent and breakpoint is reached,
whole connection stays open (between SOAP and PI and between PI and
ABAP Proxy) and waits for processing method (the breakpointed one) to
return. Only when processing method returns, is connection finelly
    closed.
If i understand it correctly, this is synchronous behavior. In
asynchronous behavior, as i understand it, should be connection
between PI and ABAP Proxy of application server closed immediately
after message has been delivered. This mean before my processing
    method is even called.
The same could be said about SOAP and PI communication. Connection
should be closed immediately after PI has received message. From
definition of asynchronous communication of PI is obvious, that PI
should receive message correctly and close connection to sender system
even when receiver is unreachable. It should deliver message later
when, receiver system is back on line. So why it keeps connection to
sender system open while it waits for receiver?
Why is this happening, when both interfaces are defined as
asynchronous? Could be the reason for this, if APPLICATION
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT is set on by default? If so, how can i change it
to SYSTEM ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, or disable it at all?
Or is this kind of asynchronous communication even possible since
    XI/PI 7.1 ?
Processing of message we are sending can take some time, so we dont
want connection pending open while waiting for finish of
processing. Thats the reason why we have chose asynchronous model to
    use.

Quote from How to Use the J2EE SOAP Adapter:
"If you select Best Effort, the Web service client will receive a response
message in the SOAP body. Otherwise, the Web service client will not receive a
response message if no error occurs."
"if no error occurs" - that is the problem. In either case he still
waits if some error occure or not. I dont want it. Once PI has
received message, I want the connection with sender to be closed. If
there will be error in communication between PI and reciever, I want
to see it only in PI log. That mean no notification to sender to be
    send about that error.
    Is that possible?

  • Synching Sent (GMail) emails between iPhone  and OSX Mail app

    Hi all,
I have been using Gmail sync'd between my laptop and my iPhone for months with no problems - I've never been too bothered about synching Sent emails. But now my wife has an iPhone she'd like to see copies of her emails sent from her iPhone using her GMail account to appear in her Sent Box in Mail.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Obviously one workaround is for her to bcc herself in on every email sent from her iPhone but she'd rather not do that
    Cheers

Hi, I'm surprised you have not had an answer to this.
I "think" you need to use the IMAP protocol for your mail and not POP, assuming I've got this right then you'll need an expert here to guide you further.
I'm in the UK and my new ISP (Sky.com) recommends the use of the IMAP protocol for email (their email client is GMail). So I'm still learning how to use it properly.
Hopefully someone else will jump in here and confirm my "thoughts"

  • External raid, Formatted for VISTA and OSX?

I need an external raid for both platforms. Nothing fancy, do not need to boot from it, just a work horse.
So, #1 I need help buying a raid or advice on increasing through put.
2)I have decided it would be best for an external raid so I can share it with other artist for diff projects.
    3)I have a macpro dual quad 2.8. 6gig sdram 2008 10.5.6…Bootcamp, Vista 64
4)I need faster through put for working with large file sizes, dpx, exr file sequences, playing back 1080p quicktimes in FCP. Compositing in after effects, nuke, some photoshop with 4k image sequences. As of now pulling this media off a local drive can be slow. I do not have specific data through put specs?
5)I do not need any back up. All this local media has already been backed up on a triple redundancy server over a network. I want speed not back up. I want to work local on a fast external raid, than wipe it clean.
6)I need a fast raid that I can format and work a job using Vista working in the PC world for a project. Than after that project I will format it to do a job on the mac. I need a raid that will allow me to use it for either platform. Very important to be able to use both platform.
What hardware do you recommend for my simple needs. I am overwhelmed with options. scsi, esata, JOBD, fiber optic, Raid 0, 5, 10. ahh
My projects have not exceeded 1 terabyte. That’s seems a sufficient size.
OK, I hope that covers the basics and my reasons are reasonable. I am saavy enough to build it myself to save cost. Something simple, efficient, cost effective and smart for my needs. My hang up is will it work with the PC than with the mac
Thanks so much. Advice is appreciated. You guys are the best!

    Hi,
I would suggest the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM and the HighPoint RR 2314. This will allow you to install the PC driver on the PC and the Mac driver in OS X.
You could use different disks for PC or Mac and swap the disks in and out as needed. Or you could reformat as you suggested in your post. You could also erase the hard disks using the DOS format in Mac OS X Disk Utility and share the volume between the two OS types. The options are virtually unlimited with this external configuration.

If 130MB/sec. performance is fast enough and you do not need RAID 5 you may want to consider the less expensive SeriTek/2SE2-E controller. This can be setup on the Macintosh or the PC and the card is less expensive.

  • Shared files between Vista and Windows 8.1

I have a laptop with windows 8.1 on it and a desktop with Vista.  The desktop can access the files on the laptop, but the laptop cannot access the desktop files.  The network shows the desktop, but says it is cannot access it.  Is
there a setting in windows 8.1 that I am missing?

    Hi,
Please make sure that you have permission to access Windows Vista computer, and the share from Windows Vista is for public.
    Then, please check following settings:
Whether these two computers are in the same workgroup.
Try to turn off the firewall of Windows Vista to check the results.
Check whether the network discovery of both computers is turned on.
Check following ports are allowed in Firewall: UDP 3702, TCP 5357, TCP 5358
If the key restrictanonymoussam under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa was set to 1 or 2, please change it to 0.

  • Incompatibility between iPAD and MAC OS X 10.4.11?

    Hi,
Just bought an iPAD yesterday. I was very excited about getting started with it, but when I plugged it into my iMac... the system tells me MAC OSX 10.4.11 does not support iPAD and that I need at least MAC OSX Leopard to be able to connect my iPAD!!! I am sure there would not be such an issue with a PC so I am really frustrated. Any suggestion here from someone?
Can I upgrade from Mac OSX 10.4 to 10.5 or even 10.6?
    Thanks for your usual support,
    G

So, I have just spent £700.00 on an iPad, I have an iPhone 3Gs and a =n iMac PPC G5 running the latest Tiger operating system - I even upgraded to iTunes 9.2 to ensure that I had the latest software to enable compatibility with my iPad ready for activation!
Plug my iPad in - you can't use your iPad with this version of the OS! WHAT! this has to be a joke, No - but it runs fine on a PC with running XP an operating system launced in October 2001! I bought my mac in March 2006! and have no need to upgrade yet, yes I hear you shout XP service pack 3 - OK SP3 out in 2006 but THIS IS A FREE UPGRADE!
I have many mac products and have slated windows and PC's for many a year - but this infuriates me I don't understand why an operating system limits this product when the latest interface software 'iTunes' runs fine on that older said OS! What the F** surely it's not to make extra money as I can't purchase the OS X 10.5 from Apple and my Hardware won't run the latest Apple OS. I will have to wait till I get home to activate my iPad with my laptop running XP!
One not very happy Apple customer. - I think apple should make available OS X 10.5 a FREE download just like service pack 3 for windows XP!

  • Keynote compatibility issues between iOS and OSX versions

Please help! I have been using iOS version of Keynote for creating and presenting on my iPad for the last 12 months and it has worked really well. I recently purchased a Mac and installed Keynote and opened some of my recent presentations on it using iCloud. I was able to use the better functionality on the OSX version then save it and open on the iPad to present. Yesterday, however I opened my main presentation on the iPad and I got a screen saying "this presentation may look different on your iOS device than on your Mac. To preserve the original, tap open copy". I opened the copy version and the entire presentation was greyed out with all the images gone. I opened it on the Mac and it was also greyed out so I am unable to open it on any device now. The original is still there (thank God!) but I cannot find a way to open it at all. Thanking you in advance for any assistance!

    Hi Siamless,
Tom Gewecke is correct, "...It's not available on your Mac except via downloading with a browser...".
If you have an iCloud account log into your iCloud account choose iWork icon on the far right.
On your computer choose which files to upload. Choose which file type you want to upload then choose the appropriate tab, Keynote, Numbers, Pages. Upload your files to the appropriate tab.
There is a gear in the upper right click it choose Upload Document.
From iCloud you will not be able to work on the file, however if you have the iOS device with Keynote, Numbers, Pages, installed you will be able to work on them with your iOS device.
If you are running Lion then changes made to that file from your computer, or iOS device will be synced to iCloud, your iOS device, and your computer. That keeps your iWork documents synced.
    Hope that helps you.
    Cordially,
    RicD

  • Transferring large files between win and osx

I have a file larger than 5 gigs, and I am trying to just move it from OSX to Windows XP(bootcamp). Since I had my bootcamp partition formatted at FAT32, I couldn't drag and drop it in to the bootcamp drive since my file too big!
I have an external drive (Western digital 500g), and I tried using that but (I think) since the drive is formatted for Mac OSX, Windows can't see it. I also tried formatting the external as FAT32, but that didn't work since (again) my file is too big.
Is there any way to do this!?!? Compressing?? I have no idea!!
If you could be so kind to help
    thank you

Hi wasaki and welcome to Discussions,
that is quite aproblem you have to face.
Even if you could successfully transfer this file to any FAT32 partition (internal BootCamp or external harddisk) you won't be able to do anything with it, since even when you run Windows the single file size limitation of 4GB on FAT32 partitions would prevent it.
When it is just for storage, you might be able to compress the file (making a ZIP-archive) and, depending on what this file is, may be getting a file size of less than 4GB.
If you have to work with this file in Windows, you can try to split this file into smaller pieces.
Best solution I can think of is to first convert your BootCamp Windows from FAT32 to NTFS file system, which doesn't have this file size limitation.
    Here's how-to: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307881&x=16&y=9
Before doing this you should consider making a backup of your BootCamp Windows with WinClone http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ just in case.
After that you can use either NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ or better get Paragons NTFS for OSX http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ for write access to NTFS from OSX (since OSX itself can only read from NTFS).
I know these are major changes to do, but for a prolonged use of files with these sizes, it's the best I know of.
    Good Luck
    Stefan

  • What's the difference between Vista and Safari 3.0.4?

Nobody who "upgrades" to Vista has a problem downgrading back to XP...
OK, seriously, is there a way to uninstall this disaster of an upgrade (3.0.4) without reinstalling and archiving the old system, then a ton of updates, etc...

Post in the full text of a Crash Report from Safari and maybe someone on here will give you some appropriate advice on what is causing your specific crashes.
To be clear it is not crashing for most people, but for those it is crashing for - where by far the most common culprit seems to be 3rd party "enhancer" software or InputManagers - it is crashing all the time and those of us trying to help out in here can well understand it would be really frustrating.

  • Using Firewire between XP and OSX

I am interested is connecting my Mac and XP machine using a firewire cable. Now I have read the article about using the target disk method but I was wondering if there was a way to do it with both computers being turned on. I read an article on WinSCP3 to transfer files but I really do not see a speed increase from a normal network connection. I want to take advantage of the 400Mbps transfer speed, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, I'm disappointed after trying IP over FW on two eMacs. I have to admit that eMacs have slow 5400RPM HDs, and that both were running dnetc full blast, (but FW isn't CPU intensive like USB), but here's my results, though I swear that I did this at work between a QS/DP1.467GHz and an MDD/1.42GHz with much better results...
